Title: Now a wing car owner
Post by: 41husk on January 14, 2010, 12:39:30 PM
I recieved my title and bill of sale yesterday and went to the DMV today to register her.  I am now officially a wing car owner  :2thumbs:  I know that a clone is not a big deal to many XX car owners, but it has always been a dream of mine.  I hope to have it completed and in my garage by late February ist of March :icon_smile_big:

Congrats on the purchase. Clone or real it will still turn heads when you go cruising up and down the road in it.

I'm one of the odd balls in this thread as I don't own a wing car. One of these days though, one of these days I will.

I have owned many Chargers and other mopars, but this is my first wing car.  I have been in the aero section since they put it up.  Often just lurking but I would post despite not having ever owned one.  I guess I am saying if you need to own a wing car before comming on this section to keep from being sn odd ball, I guess I am sn odd bsll as well  But those who know me already knew that :coolgleamA:

Okay, my new home office has been completed and the computer is back up and running.  I should be back to work on Allen's Daytona this week for sure. Other than driving up to pick up my freshly rechromed bumper for my superbird, I have the schedule wide open for the first time in a while. First thing on the agenda is to prep and paint the front end for the car and start the final assembly before taking it to the trim shop to finish up the interior.
It's supposed to be in the high 60's here all week so that should work out perfect for painting.
Here's a couple of pics of the car taken a couple of days ago. I had to move it into the storage building while the guys finished installing the new compressor and air lines in the body shop. It's in good company with the wingrunner and the Black Ice bird.  ;D

One of my guys blocked the fenders, hood and nose on the clone today. I'll prime them one more time and they should be ready for final sand and paint. I can't wait to get this one finished...so I can start on getting my bird re-painted.  :icon_smile_big:
Actually, I plan to work on the bird some while the clone is at the trim shop.

My priorities keep changing on a daily basis. This car should have been finished a year ago. They could make a movie about all of the crap that's happened to me in the last couple of years.  ;D

Even with all of the negative stuff happening around me, I will have to admit that finally being able to buy a Superbird has made me feel a little better about life in general.
I plan to install the new clutch in the bird this weekend, bolt on the rear bumper and wing and go out for a cruise if the weather stays nice. I've only driven it around here close to the shop and have been dying to get it out on the road.

Hey Allen, we re-primed the daytona clone parts today and should have them painted before the weekend. Pics will follow.   :coolgleamA:

Thanks, I look foreward to the pics.  Rain here all week, even if I had the Daytona couldn't cruize, but the weather will turn soon , so don't be out to long in Black Ice.  All play and no work makes Allen a sad boy :'(

as far as times being tuff, thankfully health is not an issue but trying to do a rightious/worthy restoration of a sorta low mile all matching superbird while unemployed is not easy. i would call 43,000 miles low but some may not. :shruggy:

Transfered insurance from the 68 to the 69 but they would only insure it for the same amount as the 68 until I can provide the car for them to take pictures of or provide an independant 3rd party appraisal.  I thought agreed value was agreed value :shruggy: I guess that means they don't agree ?
Title: Re: Now a wing car owner

Hagerty quoted me $421 a year on the Daytona clone.  I have State Farm now with agreed value.  They are right at 1/2 of that cost a year and will only Insure it for $25k until they can see the car or have a 3rd party appraisal.  What do others do for insurance?  How do you list it?  My qoute from Hagerty was as a 69 RT/SE Modified.
Title: Re: Now a wing car owner

$421. is a lot . it's because they put it down as modified . that makes it more expensive . my 39 cuope is listed as modified and it cost  twice as much as any of my cars to insure  .

The headlamp assemblies are in and I've hooked the vacuum up to them. They go up and down without a problem.

I've been mocking up the z-braces today. I'll have to make a spacer to go between the z-braces and the mounts inside the nose. I'll permanently attach the steel spacer to the z-braces for strength.

We're supposed to have warmer temps so I should be able to re-paint the body later this week. I just wasn't happy with the depth of the clear. If it wasn't for having to re-paint, the car would be finished already.

I need to get this one finished so that I can get over on my Superbird and get it ready for the June wing car show.  ;D

Thanks ! for the update  :2thumbs:  I feel like I did as a kid on Christmas eve.  Got that nervous anxious feeling in my gut.  I drove the 73 for a bit Saturday and couldn't help wondering how much different the wing car driving experience would be.  Does it drive and ride different than the 68 or 73?  Can you tell you are in a wing car from the driver seat.  I feel like a wing car owner.  I even have hotel reservations for the wing car gathering in Branson in June.

I had planned to do that today but a guy came over and bought my Z28. That took longer than I expected.
The trim shop lady called this morning and they're ready to recover the seats so I spent some time rounding up the parts.
It's coming together.

Too late...I sold them.. Just kidding.

I spent about two hours trying to find the headrest parts that go inside the seat back. I have to look through three shops and the basement of our home that is full of mopar parts. I finally found them in the basement in a box with another set of headrests. I was sweating that one. Those kits are $125 at BEA.

I'm getting ready to drop some coin at the trim shop having those seat covers installed. I love the smell of leather. I was planning to buy the leather covers for the bird but chickened out.

It's looking like I won't be able to paint the car tomorrow. We had a job with a large company that took longer than expected so I'm getting shoved to Saturday. On Saturday, I was supposed to go with my son to Tulsa to have the new racecar chassis certified. Way too much happening around here.

I'll take some pics once the car is in the booth.

Thanks looking foreward to the pictures, and the smell of leather.  I was out moving a friends Neon on my trailor yesterday and his front valance drug a bit driving up.  Will that be a problem with the nose cone?  These kinda things keep running through my mind :slap:

Looks even better with the clearcoat. I plan to shoot the deck lid and wing early in the week and then I can start with final assembly. Not only do I have to hustle to get Allen's car completed, I have to get the bird completed as well. I'm anxious to drive the Black Ice bird now that the weather is warming up. That keeps me highly motivated on Allen's winger.  ;D

Looks like there will be at least three.

We're going to work all day tomorrow getting the nose on. We fitted the valance today and drilled it. We also attached the nose seals to the fender that Dayclona made. Fits great. We have our work cut out for us tomorrow.
Oh, and the leather seats are in. Looks good.

Allen came by today to check on the progress. I think he's a happy camper.
As of this evening, the nose is on. We still have to test everything before installing the valance. Then we can detail it and he can head to Illinois. Allen is going to wait until Saturday to leave to avoid the severe thunderstorms forecast for Friday evening.

He's trailering it back home. I'm glad he didn't plan to drive it home. This car hasn't been on the road in several years so he will basically be testing everything. I didn't do a full resto on this project since the car was a pretty decent driver before we tore it down. At least he doesn't have to worry about the brakes. They're new from front to rear. I've driven the car around the shop but haven't been out on the road in over five years.
Since it's his car, I'm scared to get it out in traffic. Heck, I'm scared to get my bird out in traffic. I think Allen and I are both worried about damaging the noses on these cars.

I'll take a few pics after we get it detailed.

I couldn't be happier with the entire deal, Larry and his son worked there butts off to get us on the road Saturday.  I got in town about 5:30 Saturday evening.  I had called several local car guys, including the guy who has painted all of my other cars.  He does good work and always likes to point out flaws in other peoples work.  He looked the car up and down and he is familiar with the lines since he painted the 68.  All he said was "that's straight"  I have a few bugs to work out Larry was very up front and pointed out all the concerns he had, but I want to get them taken care of before I take her out for any real time.  I have been around the neighborhood and two the gas station.  I thought it would be a amazing feeling to drive a wing car, I was right :2thumbs:  Thanks to the Roper family

I'm jealous as well. I've owned the car for many years and have never driven it other than up the street and back a few times and around the shop of course. I think the car will make a great driver. Allen's going to have to get used to that long nose that you can't even see. There were a couple of small mechanical problems with the car but we made every attempt to make the car as nice as possible. Maybe Allen will let me drive it some time.  ;D

Was hard to let this one go since it made for a nice set of winged cars.

I don't know if you guys remember or not, but this car was basically a barn find 1969 R/T SE triple black car. I started on the Daytona transformation before really getting the car all mechanically sound. I did go completely through the brakes and installed new brake hoses. The motor always started well and ran pretty good. The previous owner had just gone through the engine before parking it in the barn just a couple of years before I bought it. He said that the transmission was in good shape and shifted good so I hope that it works well for Allen.
About five years ago, one of the guys that worked for me at the dealership started the resto on the car before having to quit due to heart problems. The car then sat in storage for another couple of years before I decided to start the transformation. The power steering always had a leak and I assumed that it was the hose. I bought a new hose for it and we installed it Friday. However, the leak was still there and we had run out of time to repair it. So, Allen is going to check it out and see where the problem is. Hopefully, it's the pump housing which would be the easiest thing to repair. We really hated that he couldn't just jump in the car and take off down the highway when he got home. My son and I were really disappointed that the car wasn't fully prepared for him.
I'm going to have to go through the mechanicals on the bird as well. It's a never ending battle with these 40 year old cars.

I hope you like the leather interior. It just seemed right to go back with leather since the car is an SE. I also installed new seat buns. Every time that I've reused the old seat buns in the past, they started breaking down almost immediately even though they looked good. I hate seeing little bits of foam all over the carpet.

It is in my friends barn in Dupo IL.  We had spring break last week I left Illinois Friday the 3/26.  We went to my sisster in laws in Prospect Ky and spent the night.  We left Saturday Morning for Portsmouth VA. to visit my brother for a couple of days.  Headed for Charlotte Monday morning and loaded the mini van on the hauler and headed back for home.  Spent the night outside of Johnson City TN, and got home Tuesday afternoon.  I had wrestling practice at the high school Wednesday night and left at 6am Thursday to pick up the Daytona.  We arived at my cousins house in Oklahoma Thursday night.  We spent two nights with him but drove the 1/2 hour to Arkansas to see the Daytona every day. (Larry would probably have been done faster if we had not kept dropping by to see it) :icon_smile_big: Saturday morning we picked the car up at Larry's and headed home. 10 states in a week Illinois,Indiana,Kentucky, West Virginia, Virginia, North Carolina, Tennessee, Missouri, Arkansas, and Oklahoma.  I am glad to back at work so I can rest :shruggy:  We decided to use the pick up and trailor to get the Daytona and saved about $200 in gas.  I plan on taking the hauler to Branson in June.

It really ran great.  I have a few issues the speedometer and odometer do not work. Luckily I have a GPS that I used as a speedometer, but I doubt the original miles advertised of 52,000 is correct :slap: There were a couple scary times in the mountains going up hill, my speed dropped below 45 mph and I was wondering when I was going to start rolling down hill :shruggy: The Mechanicall fuel pump went out just outside of Illinois.  Fortunately it is equipped with an electric pump on both tanks.  I used over $300 in gas getting it home, and it is much bigger than I thought.

If you do any reading about Neil, he could be a very tough guy on the race track.   I don't think he was afraid to back away from anyone in the old days.     But he is as nice a guy as your could ever want to meet.   He has been there and done that.   Pick up a copy of "Dirt Tracks to Glory" on Amazon which has a whole chapter devoted to him where he talks about the old days.

Allen. We checked the switch on the brake pedal and it worked fine. We traced it to the turn signal switch in the column. I've never seen a problem like that before. It's usually the turn signals that mess up when the switch goes bad. If we had one, we would have switched it out to see if that was the problem but I used the last one I had on the 69 runner last year.
Good luck. Glad you're driving it.
How did the transmission shift? I don't think I've ever had out of low the entire time I've had it. I just drove it around the shop here and at the dealership where I worked.
We need pics.... ;D

Brake light problems?  9 times out of 10 it's the turn signal switch.

I replaced both of them in my purple car & the Challenger last couple years.

Whatever you do don't spend more than about $50 for a new one.  There's several that specify e body or b body only so they can bend you over.  They're all pretty much universal.

Neil, (Chryco) got me my last one.  $45.  Standard TW7.

Now I have brake lights but if I use my turn signal both left and right flash like I turned on the flashers.  I also need a nuetral start switch but it is comming along and turns heads every were.  I drove around for about 3 hours yesterday.  I plan to wash and wax her and cruize some more.  The tranny seems to shift a bit hard but maybe thats just compared to my other cars??  All I know is I'm lovin it!

Only way to get the good ones is NOS I'm afraid.

The new switches are a repop of the '72 C body switch with cornering lights, the extra connector is for the cornering lights and are not used on A, B and E body's, you can let it hang or just cut it off

Originally 70-74 all had different part numbers.  When they had them repo'd they picked the late '72 C & B body switches as they were the superseded numbers for 70-72 models.  The flasher switch black button needs to be trimmed to fit the column.

I was looking at a couple old ones as well as the reproduction wondering if there would be a market for the original black button switch?

The 69's don't have the hazard in the switch. In fact, the 69's are totally different. I have a few of the later versions but they don't work in the older, smaller columns as far as I know.

I had to wake up at 8 am this morning for Korynn's soccer game.  I don't get up that early any more so my brain's been slow all day.  It's not like I need an excuse but that's the best I can come up with.  ;)

Allen, that kickdown linkage may be causing that hard shifting. It needs to be adjusted correctly or you could damage the tranny. Wehn I put the new carb on ther, it seems like the linkage wasn't right. Be sure and check it out. I have so many cars to maintain that I truly can't remember what I've done to what car.

I will look at that Larry, that may be the problem.  It was very nice today I drove the challenger up the river road with the top down.  I just took the Daytona up to Advance to see if the switch and power steering pump was in.  The pump will work but the switch was only the plastic piece with two red wires to splice with the harness to the left and right turn signals.  When I replaced the Challengers it came with the entire harness because I remember what a pain it was feeding it through the colum.  I guess I should start checking on line.  It shined up real good but I had the headlights on tonight and it seems they scratch the nose cone when they are up and moving down the road :brickwall: not a big deal.  I will try some clay bar touch it up and see about adjusting them.  I just love driving this thing :2thumbs:  A lady pulled up next to me and informed me she used to own a super bird, and wanted to know why I had not put the wing and nose on a plymouth Charger rather than a Dodge :shruggy: when I said it was a Dodge Daytona that also came with a wing and nose but was a year before the bird.  She smiled and said I did not know what I was talking about, and even though it is avery nice car, every body will know it's not a SuperBird :smilielol:   A picture of Larry, Sandra, there son and grandson oh and me.

I got the new steering box on order but that has not stopped me.  Took the belt of the pump. Manual steering aint that bad.  They used my car for a video commercial at school for the upcomming car show.  Basicly a kid with a regular late model car pulls into a bay at the auto shop and closes the door.  He acts like he is working on a tranny sanding a fender and even hits one of his tires with a sledge hammer :shruggy: next they show the shop door open and he backs out in my Daytona and says " now I am ready for the GCHS car show" and pulls off.  I will see if they can send me a copy.  Here are some pics of her at her new home.
