Hey guys,
Looking for opinions to what you think gives the best sound for a 440 60 over 488 cam. Been battling engine heat issues and thinking my Fair Muffler turbo style mufflers from 1993 should be replaced for a better breathing muffler. A friend suggested the 40 series Flowmaster. What do you guys recommend?
Thanks,
Chris
I have the dynomax welded ultra flows on mine and like them.
Different people will have different preferences. I found it useful (though not perfect because recordings can have bias) to listen to clips and also to hear what people said about them from both inside and outside the car.
maybe they will post clips or links to clips for different combinations.
I am probably on the extreme for some and run mufflers and resonators to keep the sound quiet My neighboers still say they can hear me drive up from several blocks away, but that is because the cars are distinctive in sound and even with resonators (bullet mufflers) some sound still shows. up. The advantage I have is I can speak with people in the car when it idles and when it is on the road.
Here are the dynomax on my 505ci...... https://youtu.be/R2F_d9_NoZY
Youtube is your friend here. What mufflers are best is like asking should i buy coke pepsi or rc cola? Its what sounds best to you. What i like may sound like dog crap to you.
Fwiw, your engine heat issues will not be solved by a muffler swap.
But- in a chambered muffler i prefer 3 chambers. 2 chambers of any brand will be more raspy and tin sounding; think sterotypical mustang sound.
In a straight through design, i like the dynomax ultraflows. The case is large enough to not overpower you, but still has a nice aggressive sound. Any smaller case then those and you enter wood pulp truck territory.

Old school Cherry Bomb glass pack. Sounds great and when you get on it they scare Harley riders.

Cant stand them. Sounds like a 1970s wood pulp truck to me. Lol.

Those sound good. The magnaflos are similar construction to the dynomax ultraflos. If memory serves, the mags are a more oval shaped case? Correct me if im wrong

Correct Joe.
I love Magnaflow. I like that all cars sound the same. Camaro Cuda Mustang All with the same sound. Awesome.
Will have to climb under the nova to check, but 90% sure its got magnaflows on it.

Thanks guys for all of your input, leaning towards the 40 series or Super 44's, I dont want to sound like all the others with Magnaflows. I would have gotten a Camaro if I wanted to be like everybody else.

Chris
LMAO.. yeah my car sounds like a camaro
Lol, 40 series to me is the "fox body mustang" sound. Dont get me wrong, love me some 40 series, but if you have 2.5 or bigger pipes and plan on street driving, you may want to reconsider. And this is coming from the guy running open header on a 700hp street car... just sayin....
so i am guessing that the 40 series are very loud? i currently have a fair muffler turbo style from the early 90's that are loud in the cab that I would get a headache until rhe H pipe was installed, running 2.5" pipes,
If you have a super turbo and think that is loud, the 40 series will be deafening. I love the sound though. Deep and aggressive tone. With the right cam, its mean. But it will drone you to death.
WHAT ??

WHAT ??
 clearly i have missed something. Traditional turbo mufflers have nothing on a 2 chamber 40 series. So i missed something. Lol.

He's just deaf from the 40-series mufflers... :icon_smile_big:
I am deaf, but its notnfrom the 40 series. Ditched them for a new sound.
Its all subject to what you like. Personally I run the 14" Dynomax mufflers and I LOVE the sound. Not too glasspak but not too flowmaster. Also had an H pipe and went to an X. It is a little quieter now but at WOT it sounds much much better.
Which dynomax mufflers?
Whoops.
The Ultra Flos
 they do sound awesome
I always find it interesting to see which mufflers people associate with which cars...seems to be pretty common regional themes.
Around here, Flowmaster 40 Series (2 Chamber Flows as we called them) were literally on every thing. Most people were driving single cab chevys, some had fox bodies, and a few were on gm f-bodies. Granted this was the mid 90s-early 00s.
I was in an old Charger and ran Dynomax...Still do actually :icon_smile_cool:
As mentioned though, what sounds best will be entirely subjective to you and your friend. Just keep in mind on YouTube that the camera's mic and location (outdoors, in a shop, reverb off a wall) will impact sound...age of the video will play a part too, primarily due to the mic pickup generally getting better. Always check multiple videos of a system you like the sound of to corroborate it. If possible, then find someone with that muffler/exhaust locally to hear in person as it is always slightly different. Lots of factors contribute to the overall tone.
Since I'm stuck in the office, here are some 10 year old vids, lol. The camera was way too close to the car and hence the sound on the light revs isn't accurate:

I should re-do a lot of the Charger vids with my newer cameras.
