Title: '69 318 - Transmission Leak at Dipstick?
Post by: Skull-1 on December 20, 2021, 11:46:18 AM
Driving home the other day I started blowing white smoke.   Pulled over, shut down, checked under hood, and found transmission fluid everywhere.    Started up and looked.   Appears to be from the dipstick.

Is this something that can be tightened or am I looking at some drawn out process to drain and repair?

Any advice is appreciated.

Coming out the top of the dipstick tube or where the tube enters the case?

If it's blowing out the top, look for a clogged vent. If it's at the case, there's a rubber O-ring. In some rare cases, the tube can crack at the groove where the O-ring sits.

I would hope it is just the O ring but I have seen them cracked at the bottom before

It's coming out of the base and spraying on the firewall.   Nice white cloud of smoke in the mirror tipped me off.  Lol

"Spraying", that'd be a new one.

Well that's what it's doing.

First, be sure that is the source.

The one time we started leaving a smoke and transmission fluid mist behind us while driving was because a transmission fluid line had a hole wear into it where it rubbed against the K frame. Once the wall of the tube wore through, it was spraying fluid right on to the header.

I had a dip stick leak, after a garage bent the base of the tube out of round. It stopped sealing. I didn't get a smokey mist from that. Just drops of fluid where I would park.

It was shooting out of the dipstick.   Wound up doing a full rebuild.   It was shot.

It is running like it is supposed to now and what a difference.   Best $1200 I've spent on this car I have to say.

Thanks, man.   I may get this car finished yet!
