Well - Months after I bought it, my Bird is finally home. 12,000 miles, original paint, buckets/console auto. And to those dying to know - all 4 headlamps in this car are Westinghouse ;)
Here are some pics ...
Sharp 'Bird!! :drool5: :drool5: :drool5:
Here are some engine pics. Note the exhaust manifold heat stove and the original hoses and battery cables. I have all 4 original tires (not on) in good shape as well.
nice :coolgleamA:
:drool5:
BEAUTIFUL!!!!!! :2thumbs:
Nice..was that John McBride's old car?
John
You nailed it Big John
Having seen it some time ago, that car possibly the best original Bird out there. Certainly it's "right up at the top".
Thanks all. Doug, Frank Badalson told me he has wanted this car for twenty years and still dreams about it :icon_smile_big:
That car is ABSOLUTELY BEAUTIFUL!!!! Looks almost like the car I am restoring. I would love to see MANY more reference pictures. Thanks for posting

I am sure Frank has wet dreams over that car, LOL. You see survivor cars that are really nice, but I don't recall seeing one another Bird like this. When we bought ours in '72 with 8000 miles, it was not this nice.
Finally a nice car !!!! How many pistons ???? :icon_smile_big:
It seems by everyones comments that the car is a very nice original car. I hope to see it one day! :icon_smile_wink:
I always thought the manifold stoves were 4bbl only items? I don't have any info on this just that Ive never seen one on a 6BBL car. Is that because they were removed early on? much like the spark plug boot shields.
Maxwellwedge,
I'm very new to the site and don't know the history of your story. How long have you waited to get the car home? How did you have the opportunity to acquire this rare beauty?
SCHWING !!!!!!! :2thumbs:
absolutly beautiful :drool5: :drool5: :drool5: :drool5: :drool5: :drool5: :drool5: just awesome
Glad you got it congrats :2thumbs:.On owning the former owned John Mcbride car.I was certain it had the westinghouse lamps
Wow, that 'Bird looks great! :drool5: It looks just like the magazine picture I used to have on my bedroom wall when I was a kid over twenty years ago...I wonder if it's the same car? :scratchchin:
I was also wondering about the manifold heat stove...any more info you can share on that?

Manifold Heat Stove - While not needed and not installed on
most 440-6 engines, a bunch have them anyway.
I have known about this car for many years and it came on the market the end of last year. I bought it (it was in California). The car had been in a bubble (I'm not kidding) by that owner for 8 years. It was never driven or started during that time. The fellow was selling a couple of other cars that were in the same suspended animation and another person bought those. That person decided to have his cars shipped to Gibson's shop to change fluids, check the carbs etc. so I said - heck send mine there as well for the "shave and haircut". While it was there I was waiting for some other stuff for Roger to finish for me - hence the 5 month lag between purchase and gettingt it up here.

Sure looks like a beauty eh :2thumbs:
Seems to fit real well with the other cars that you have. Good luck with it. Let me know if you need any help getting all the cars properly exercised this summer, I am willing to helpout :yesnod:

Hey maxwellwedge, I was wondering if you could tell me about the rivets that hold the fiberglass headlight door to the frame. Were these rivets installed before or after everything was painted black? If you have any pictures, that would be great! I'm just trying to figure if the rivets on the car I am restoring needs to be painted or left natural. Thanks!

Hi Justin - I checked. Absolutely everything is black - painted with what I think is Organasol. The buckets, rivets, the adjusters, the inner "box" and the headlight stainless rings - on the tabs and screws. Don't forget, the nose gets a shot of Organasol around the H/Light bucket opening so when the decals go on there is no body color showing.
Anything else just ask.
Heyman! Thanks! I read exactly what you said somewhere before but I just wanted to make sure. There's nothing like a good unrestored car to go by. Thanks again

In that pic the car looks more like Tor-Red than Vit C. ;D
A member pm'd me about some details so I thought I might as well post them here as well.
"I also included brake drum pics. Mopars with Rallye's or Magnums had the drums painted red with a brush. The wheels were put on while the drums were still wet! The backs of original wheels had red drips from the drum paint on them! The exact paint is available from Roger Gibson/Frank Badalson.
Regards"

I have that engineering procedure page somewhere - I'll find it and post.
Notice the studs - The procedure said to keep the paint away from that area.
Somewhere is Hemigeno drooling over the drum retainers on the studs.

It was good meeting you too Jim. Your Bird is truely spectacular!!!!! I can't wait to see Doc and Disco. We got so busy talking that I didn't get any pics of either Bird. LOL!!!! The only pic I took all day was of the black and grey '09 Viper ACR that was up near the front where we came in.
I managed to take a few pics of the Superbirds, I will post a couple tonight.
Good talking to both of you

Great detail item on the red paint inside the wheel - probably means the wheel guys (or a station right before them) were responsible for slathering on that red paint based on what wheels were being installed.

If he doesn't have it, it would be because he some how lost it. Because I am positive we saw it before.
Man seems everyone is making trips to visit Jim. I need to free up a weekend, and update my passport now to visit. Shouldn't have let it expire last year.

Haha - actually Danny - We are talking about the show at the Chrysler (Fiat?) Brampton plant yesterday - that's where we saw each other.
An hour and a half drive isn't a trip Danny. :icon_smile_big: LOL!!!!!

I'm a hoarder when it comes to paperwork, so there's not much chance it got lost 'round here anyway... :P
Here is the 1970 version of the engineering graphic that John Kunkel posted in this thread about red drums: (http://www.dodgecharger.com/forum/index.php/topic,15981.0.html)
I'm sure the predecessor of that drawing is around here somewhere, as I already posted in the thread linked above that the graphic is dated in February of 1968. Just don't have time to go fishing for it at the moment.
That's the one - Note 6 in the triangle to the bottom left.
cool head-on pics but how much paint got on the sides of the drums? could you post a profile pic?

No Problem...
whats the history of the car with the painted drums?
The underside of the rear componets seemed to be all the same black and not as aged as the outside of the drum.
The springs should be natural finish, no?
These springs were black - some are black and some are natural on B-Bodies. Most E-Body leafs I have seen are natural.

Im not questiong the car just wondering about the componet finish. :2thumbs:
I was under the impression that all springs were natural from research Ive been doing so I could get my car as close to accurate as possible.
I hope it was not taken in a negative way? :icon_smile_blackeye:
There really are a lot of '69-70 B-bodies with painted springs. My Daytona is being restored this way, although that doesn't mean too much. '68s almost all (if not all) had natural springs, but '69+, especially late '69+, seemed to have a whole lot more painted spring examples. Why that is the case would be anyone's guess... :shruggy:

Nope - No offence taken - just short, hurried answers as I was out the door.
It's hard to tell in the pictures but the paint appear to be more on the shade of Hemi Orange. Does the camera flash just make it appear that way? Here is a picture of the drum that I removed from the car I am working on. I matched it dead-on and repainted the entire drum. I feel like the sides of the drums were also painted originally. When you drive the car the pads heat up this area and burns the paint. This is only speculation though.

Well I can honestly say I have never seen them completely painted - And I have seen a lot of them.......But not all of 'em! ;D
When I took my 69 charger apart, the drums were completely painted.
Looked like red primer.Might not be relevent as it's a high mileage car.Who knows if they have been changed or it might be something a previous owner did.
