Hi Aero Folks.
Whilst stripping gazzillions of red/black layers of paint off my 69 500, I got to thinking of Don's 500.
A Floridian 440 4-speed 500 with red/black paint scheme.(a strange coincidence)
I wonder if someone back in the day did a Don replica?
Where is Don's 500 now???
My car is the last 440 500 made and there is one Hemi 500 after it.
When did Don get his 500?
Cheers 500Jon
This car your refering to.MCG did a small mentioning on it where it is .Guess its unknown to http://www.dodgecharger.com/forum/index.php/topic,64642.msg724173/topicseen.html#msg724173
Hi XX29,
Thanx for the reply.
Whats the link you have sent?
Has the Garlits 500 been found???
If not is there any info on it at all?
Cheers 500Jon

Jon,
Can you share some pics of the paint striping process? Any hints of the specific paint layout of the Garlits car? That would be pretty cool.
Hi Aero Folks,
Classic example of 'bad timing'!
My deepest sympathies go out to Don and his family in this saddest of times for him. :pity:
I will return to this 500 story another time methinks
Sincere condolences from England
500Jon
ps NascarXX29, I've been trying to pm you but your 'inbox' is full.
Jon,
As far as I know there are 2 other 500's that are 440 powered that are a higher VIN than yours, however I can not say which one is truly the "last" 500. Because I have not seen a shipment list for the 500's. Just becuase it has a higher VIN does not mean it was the later one produced, IE see the shipment list of Daytona's versus the list of just VIN's. Lowest VIN car is last on shipment list, and the next lowest VIN 355101 for Daytona's is in the middle of the road when it comes to shipment list.
There is another C500 with a higher VON than yours that is a 440 powered car as well, but has a lower VIN.
Hi 69-500,
Many thanx for the update!
Info is changing all the time on 500's.
Thats part of the mystery of owning one! :popcrn:
I'm hoping that the '25 built' 400 stick cars against '26' 426H stick cars stays the same.
Once some time has passed I will contact Don Garlits to see if he has recollections of his 500?
Sometime in the past the 'green-paint' was totally covered in black paint.
Then the red was added over the top.
Maybe someone copied his 'Crower-Cam- Car' or maybe his car was involverd in a accident,
whilst fairly new and the decision was made to repaint the whole car??? :shruggy:
Either way I think the paint scheme is COOLIO!!!
ANYWAYS,I WILL COPY IT FOR NOW AND SEE THE REACTION HERE IN THE UK?
There's nothing better than causing a stir! :smilielol:
500Jon
It'd be cool if you were able to copy it and then somehow get it over here to go to Big Daddy's annual Mopar show.
I was thinking the Garlits car was more of a T5 color and black for some reason. I can not find a good color picture of it right now though.
Hi Aero's,
The Ertl model is probably a guesstimate example.
The July 1969 'HOT ROD' advert shows different lettering.
The red on my 500 is quite dark, like the Mopar 'Crimson' red?
Was it in fact a red-car with added black panels?
Was it a Hemi car and they just glossed over that fact in the advert??? :smilielol:
Either way it was a strane thing to do with a new 500!!!
