Title: Black Ice Superbird...Next Chapter Now with pics !!!
Post by: hotrod98 on November 27, 2009, 12:00:30 PM
Well, the Superbird was delivered this morning from Alaska. I absolutely love this car.
Tom kept preparing me for the car not being perfect. Well, he's wrong...in my eyes it is perfect. It has just enough roughness around the edges to make it a true driver in my eyes. I had been thinking all along that I would take up where Tom left off and continue the disassembly and then restore the car back to perfection. That's not gonna happen.
My new plan is to block it, seal it, throw some fresh black paint on it and drive it...a lot.
I drove it home from the drop off point this morning and it drives great. Much better than I had expected.
The only resto work for me other than the paint will be to recover the seats, put new carpet on the console, move the battery from the trunk to the engine bay and a few other odds and ends. There is just no way that I'm going to tear this car down. I want to be driving it and showing it as soon as possible.
As soon as the Daytona clone is together, this car is going into the booth.  ;D

Tom jacked the torsion bars up in the front and the air shocks in the back so that it would clear everything while being loaded. Looks kind of cool that way. The car has to be lowered back where it belongs even though the car is in Arkansas. We have paved roads now.  ;D

It's trip started in Ketchikan, shipped to Seattle and then transported here to western Arkansas. I was relieved that there was no damage done to the car. Tom removed the wing, wrapped it up nicely and placed it inside the car. Even with the wing removed, the truck driver said that the car drew a crowd everywhere he stopped.

Here's a pic of the car in the container in Alaska and then a couple of pics of the car sitting in front of my shop.

The story starts when Tom had just started the process of restoring the car to sell. I stepped in and asked for a deal on the car "as is" with no further work. After the deal was made, Tom then on his own decided to go ahead and finish up some of the work that he had started so that the car wouldn't have bare metal showing while in transit. Tom also located the original bucket seats and Dana 60 and reunited them with the car before shipping it to me. There aren't many people in this world like Tom Ferry.
I have never intended to buy a bird that was not in need of at least some resto. I don't like driving cars that someone else has painted. It's a painter thing. This car is in much, much better shape than many of the resto projects that I've looked at over the last couple of years that were priced in the same area as this car. And, this one is running and driving.
It's an original 440 car but has a six pack on it now. The custom air grabber hood is just the kind of thing that I would have done to the car.
Now if someone gives me grief, I can just say that I bought it this way.  ;D
Tom also sent me the stock hood that he had made for the car. There was a thread on here about him making the hood. I'll keep it in case I ever decide to drive it in it's stock appearance form. I already have a set of rallyes so I might do that at some point just for fun.
It's sunny and warm here today so the wife and I have been out tinkering with the car. Can't wait to start driving it to the cruise nights.

Awesome Larry! I remember the last time I had a charger shipped up here from Seattle. Funny part was when I asked where is my car, they said, most likely where those 10 to 15 people are standing, ha-ha. Couldn't see the car at all, and yep, there it was.
What a great feeling that was seeing a car for the first time ever.
Enjoy your new ride.  :2thumbs:

I hope that Mark and Allen are as happy with the cars that they're buying from me as I am with the Superbird. Mark's Cuda is leaving here tomorrow, headed to the northwest and Allen's car will be ready for him in a few weeks. It was difficult giving up two of my favorite cars to get the bird, but it was worth it.

Oops. I meant Mike.  :icon_smile_big: Forgive, me. I'm a little excited right now.
The transport guys postponed picking your car up until Saturday. They said that they had problems with people not being home on Thanksgiving day and not being able to pick cars up. I wonder why? I guess we have to go by their rules, which seem to change each day.  Sounds like a few women that I know.
The other 71 cuda is safe and sound on the top level of the four post lift...for now. Since I've decided not to do a total resto on the bird, I might accidentally find time to restore the other 71 next year.

As a fellow Arkansan and card carrying Redneck I resemble that remark, them paved roads is why these kids cant drive anymore.  Nothing teaches driving skill like bombing down a dirt road at triple digit speeds in a 68 R/T with a jacked up a$$ end, wore out suspension and little or no brakes, not that I ever did that in the mid 80's

Sweet ride, glad you got it.  Next time I'm in your neck of the woods I'd like a tour of your shop if you have time.  BTW, kept the 'Bird, me an my brother pulled interior apart and found part of the buildsheet, along with fragments of someone else's fendertag, can't read the whole number but its obviously off a charger.  Gonna keep taking her apart.

Unfortunately, I haven't been able to even touch the car in the last two days. My mother-in-law is back in the hospital which has meant three hour round trips each day to visit her. I want to go ahead and install the new clutch so that I can drive it around some before it gets real cold. May not happen any time soon.

I just opened a package from Larry last night and was just in shock at what he sent me!. He sent me a beautiful pair of superbird daytona trunk wing supports that he made. And He sent me two brand new Sata paint guns  . 1 was a satajet 3000 digital.  Wow .  I want to say that the deal with Larry was smooth and honest all the way through. He got what he wanted and so did I , We are two mutually happy people with the superbird deal.
Anyone who deals with Larry can be assured that this is an honest man,  a man who dosen't call back when a deal is struck to try to chizel you down. A man who does exactly what he says he is going to do. I have dealt with some of the richest people in this country with painting their cars and jets when I lived in Los Angeles . IT seemed the more money they had the chintzier they were and the bigger jerks they were.I only once besides getting this surprise from Larry got a tip from someone ,and that was 900 dollars for painting a t-28 trojan for a great gentleman Captain Tom Neil. He appreciated the extra effort I put into his restoration.
Thanks again Larry I am going to use the guns tomorrow!

Thanks for the kind words.
Tom deserved the gifts. He went to a lot of trouble to make the car an even better deal for me even after the deal was struck.
I'll elaborate more later.
This has been a bad week for Sandra and me. My mother-in-law lost her battle with COPD on Monday of this week. The great joy of finally getting a Superbird has been tempered by this tragic loss. My mother-in-law was a very special person and would be one of the first people to say that life goes on. It will, but it won't be the same without her. Just last week, I told her that I had bought the Superbird so that Sandra and I could enjoy traveling in it together and even though she was always quite frugal, she somehow sensed the importance I placed in buying what she would normally consider an un-needed extravagance. She said that she totally understood and that we should enjoy every day to the fullest. We always do.

I promised myself that I wouldn't buy any more cars after buying my Superbird, but I couldn't resist.
I've been trying to buy this car for years. It's a very solid, real sassy grass green 71 Barracuda 318, column shift. A friend of mine was slowly transforming it into a bracket car. I'll complete the transformation and take it to the track occasionally. It now has a very stout 360 with aluminum heads, TTI exhaust system, beefed up 8 3/4, super stock springs and disc brakes all around.
Should be fun to drive. My wife said that I have to finish the Daytona clone and finish freshening the Superbird up before I can do anything to the Barracuda.

Sandra's overseeing the entire project to make sure we load it correctly. She claims all cars that I buy. Works for me. I still get to drive them...occasionally.
At least it wasn't snowing here on Saturday when we picked it up. Was a little chilly though.
I already had a six pack hood that I plan to put on it as well as a few other nice barracuda parts lying around.

Time for a little update since the weather's getting a little nicer. The builders have started on my new shop addition so I can't get Allen's Daytona into the booth for a few more days. So, I decided to start sanding on the Black Ice Superbird. For the most part the car is pretty straight. I need to rework one small area on the right quarter.
I'm thinking that the fog machine that the band used to carry around in the trunk might have slid over and bumped the right quarter from the inside a little. Just a guess...  :D
I plan to re-prime the right quarter and then block the entire car one more time. I'll use NCS black PPG sealer, three coats of black PPG DBC and then three coats of 2021 clear. I have a guy that's been working for me that is great at wet sanding and buffing so he gets the job.
I received the new interior pieces from Dante's last week so as soon as the trim shop gets an opening I'll drop the seats off. I ordered black vinyl covers with silver welting (piping?). I also located a non-console pistol grip shifter handle so I'll remove the console and console style shifter, replace the carpet with new black carpet from ACC and install the non-console shifter handle. This is what the buildsheet shows that the car should have had and I like the non console look. I ordered a new package tray, seat divider and trunk mat. The door panels look pretty decent and I'll re-install them for now. Might replace them later.
I had the rear bumper rechromed and my son has already replaced the clutch. I've driven the car some around here close to home and so far it runs and drives great. I love the sound of the exhaust but it's a little tired and needs to be replaced. I'll try to get that done later. In fact, I'm thinking about going with a full TTI exhaust. I love the 3" TTI exhaust system on my 71 Barracuda.
I'm very glad that I bought this car. No regrets. It is obvious that it's a west Texas/southern California car. While Tom had it in Alaska he kept it stored inside most of the time and drove it in the snow very little and it shows.

I won't paint it until after Allens Daytona clone is painted. According to my builders, I'll be able to get back into the shop in a few days. We'll see. Updates to follow. I have to get these two wing cars completed...soon.

Looking good Larry.  I hope to start on the red car tomorrow.  For me, just getting it turned around will be a job.

I don't remember, are you keeping those wheels staying with the Black Ice theme?
Title: Re: Black Ice Superbird...Next Chapter
Post by: hotrod98 on March 14, 2010, 01:25:39 AM
Yes, the wheels are staying. I don't want to change the look of the car. I'll stick to updating a few worn items and leave it at that. Maybe after I've owned it for a while, I'll start making some changes. Maybe not. Next year, I may run the car with rallyes and the flat hood just for grins. I do plan to convert the 4-speed to an o/d 3-speed with the Passon cluster kit. They've been out of them all winter long for some reason.
I have no plans to ever restore the car back to original.
I'll leave that to the next owner/caretaker.

Tom, I was just thinking about that outie in the right quarter. There were a lot of parts stored in the trunk when it was on the ship. It's a definite possiblilty that it could have happened on the trip from Ketchikan to Seattle.
No biggie. I blocked it out and I'll just re-prime and block again. I truly appreciate all of the hard work that you put into it before you shipped it. Saved me a lot of time and trouble.

yeah  hey its not perfect but I just wanted you to be happy and not have to do hours of bodywork .  it really is a nice bird as far as rust. I have seen em with the whole plug and rear drip rails  rusted out  this one is solid as a rock,  wait till you take out the carpet  the floor is perfect  probably not a speck of rust. also the headlight buckets just had surface rust where lots of them the bottoms have heavy pitting or are rotted out completely. Did you unpack the flat hood yet?  I want your opinion on the job I did on it.

Boy  I can hardly wait to see it done and you guys taking it to your first cruise in. It definetly went to the right people ,  did you get the bucket seat buttons I sent?  I will keep looking for anything I might have forgot. I think I found a local guy who might buy the purple runner, he bought a 69 ss 396 chevelle in eastern washington that turned out to be a el-fako and wants a true muscle car. I am glad to see your adding onto the shop. I hope to visit someday and check it out

when or if you ever change the valve covers I really want to know  what kind of adjustable rockers were put on the engine, I lost the build up paperwork. but know  that supposedly all the  parts were top notch , the heads were supposedly ported and polished all internal bolts are the best quality and motor was balanced. I truly have always believed that it needs headders and a good flowing exhaust to reallly unkork the power. It just wants to go faster and faster. The motor was built at bills speed shop on aurora avenue in Lynwood Wa just north of seattle. Now  this was done about 1992 as the Original build I messed up when I foolishly thought I was a mechanic and installed a purple cam without changing the lifters and the lifters were slowly chewed up, I know  it was boared .030 over and theirs trw pistons, Take care and keep the pics coming!

As for the engine, all I know is it starts easy and runs great. I'll let you know when I pull the valve covers. I almost hate to since this is one of the only mopars that I own that has no leaks whatsoever.
I'll take some pics of the floor when I pull the carpet.
I put the car up on a lift when I first got it. I couldn't find any rust anywhere. I'm surprised that this car has the heavy undercoating on it since it started out as a west Texas car. I thought that the heavy undercoating was for the rust belt areas. The undercoating all looks factory applied to me. Of course, it looks kind of nasty and dirty but I'll take that over rust any day of the week.
Gotta get back out and start sanding on the bird.

Just one more letter and Ill leave you alone to block sand.  Ill bet the build sheet might show  factory undercoating. It is factory for sure and probably helped a great deal through the years.  all you have to do to plus it up is steam clean it with a soapy wash with some degreaser too and I really like the duplicolor black bedliner coating. they sell it in gallons with a application gun I put it on the paint shaker and add about 7% real lacquer thinner. it then sprays on very nice and dries real good. I use it all the time at the shop. it will make the bottom look brand new.  Hey  don't pull the valve covers on my account.

The mopar polished aluminum valve covers on it now  I accidently messed  up when I used that super clean stuff on it. I had no idea how strong it was and it totally etched the aluminum   ,but with a small polisher setup on a drill those covers will polish up real nice.  have a great day!

Okay...Allen's Daytona has left the building and it's time to get back on the Black Ice Superbird. I had the seats recovered last week and they turned out great. I removed the console and console shifter and installed the correct shifter handle. I ordered the correct shifter boot from Brewer's and I also bought a new carpet set from ACC. I'm going to re-use the original door trim panels since they don't look too bad.
I will be block sanding the car this week and hope to paint the car by the middle of next week. I would paint it this coming weekend but my son and I are taking both of our racecars out to the dragstrip for a little test and tune.

I drove up to Tulsa this last weekend and bought Howie's 1980 Dodge crew cab dually. It was a one owner, 75,000 mile truck that he bought last year. I only mentioned to Howie that I wanted it every other phone call. I didn't want to bug him too much about it. This truck will be a nice hauler for my cuda drag car. Reminds me of the crew cab dually that I used to haul my ex-top fueler around with back in the early 80's. I might even use it to haul the Superbird around on those rare occasions that I don't drive it.

It still has the original 360 four barrel, but the original owner installed an aluminum intake, holley carb and headers.
I have a complete 440 drivetrain that I plan to install in it. I kind of hate to remove the original 360 but Howie wants it back to go in a 74 Dodge Charger that I sold him a couple of years ago. We tend to trade and sell a lot of stuff back and forth.

I have every piece of paperwork for this truck from the day that it was bought new. I even have the build sheet, owner's manual, and the original factory brochure.

I've thought about doing something like that but the truck is a rare color combo as it is and I only need to do a little touch up to make it nice. I may paint the new cuda drag car white to kind of match the truck.

I have several engines sitting around in storage. I might have a nice 318. The Charger had a 318 in it to begin with.
It would be a shame to remove the original engine and not hold onto it.

I've moved the bird into the back shop to get started on it. We removed the hood and deck lid. I've already removed all of the other trim so I'm ready to get down to business. I'm welding up the holes where the six pack emblems were on the hood. One of the emblems is broken and I really don't care for having a Dodge nameplate on a Plymouth anyway. I also plan to remove the original spoiler that was damaged several years ago and install the spoiler that Mike Goyette built for my Superbird clone. I'll place the original spoiler in storage. The only other thing that I've done body-wise is to have the rear bumper re-plated. It wasn't terrible but the new chrome really does stand out.

I should have the car ready to shoot in the next few days. I have a show here locally that I want to enter the car in so I have to have it completed by the 24th. That shouldn't be a problem. I hope to have the body panels and trim painted and assembled by the 16th and then I can start re-installing the interior. The interior usually takes less than two days. We may be able to do it in one day since I won't be re-installing the console which makes installing the carpet much easier and I'm re-using the original door trims. Less prep time there.

I can always put off doing the engine stuff until after the show. The engine runs great just the way that it is but I need to replace the hoses, belts, plug wires, etc. and do a general clean up under the hood. At some point, I would love to order a new TTI exhaust. The exhaust that's on it sounds great but it's showing some age.

Sandra and I are getting very excited about getting the bird back on the road.

glad your getting her done .

This car didn't have that harness. Tom made one up using parts and pieces back when he put the console in. I'm going to alter it and make some underdash courtesy lights.
I may have the short harness with the console lights around here somewhere. I would have to look. You could make up the long harness from scratch since no one sees it anyway.

Can't help with a b-body. I have a couple of e-body console harnesses, but they're entirely different.

Been priming some spots on the bird today and stripping the wing braces. Other than a washer welded to the top of two legs, you can't tell the difference btween these factory wing braces and the ones that I build. Now I can tell the guys with the birds that they are correct for their cars as well. All they have to do is modify the bracket that they weld to the floor. The Daytonas bolt down and have the extra flap. Easy alteration.
I "will" have the car painted next week. Getting more excited by the day.

There are four of us working at the shop now and we still can't catch up. I've been letting them do most of the work with me supervising. I'm officially retired from building cars for customers. I said that the Daytona clone would be the last and I plan to stick to that plan. We're starting to do a lot more collision work. It pays a whole lot better and the cars are in and out in days...not months.
I just want to work on my own cars for a couple of years.  I have to start on my new 70 Barracuda drag car next. Then I plan to turn my 71 sassy grass Barracuda into a cuda clone and take it to an auction, hopefully making enough money to pay for these other builds.
At this rate, I may never get my tor-red 71 Cuda finished.  ;D

Yes. There are a few more vids of the car on there as well including the snow incident. It looked like he had ran the car into the snow bank but he didn't. There was no damage. I have pics taken after they pulled it back onto the highway. After I bought it, I kidded Tom about me bringing the car down from Alaska to warmer weather and then we had the worst winter we've had in many years here in the sunny south. I'll keep my mouth shut from now on.

Update. I have the hood and deck lid ready and now all I have left to do is to block the fenders, the cowl and the tail panel. It should be in the booth by Tuesday.
We should have it buffed by Thursday and start re-assembly Friday or Sunday. That's the plan anyway.  :yesnod:

Title: Re: Black Ice Superbird...Next Chapter

Jim Radke purchased this car in 1983 or later. I have the police paperwork showing that it was impounded and then sold at auction in '83. Jim then bought it from the person that bought it at the sale.
Has to be a different car.

The car is sanded and will be going into the booth in the morning. Didn't get it painted on Tuesday as planned.
We spent the week clearing out a 20x24 wood garage building and then moving it about 100 yards. We needed the space for the new building addition and the builders are anxious to get started. Priorities.
We plan to buff the car on Tuesday. I'll paint the hood and deck lid on Monday and then buff them on Wednesday. Should have plenty of time to get it ready for the show on Saturday here in Greenwood.
Looks like I won't be drag racing this weekend.

After several days spent moving a building and a mountain of dirt to make room for the shop expansion, I finally found the time to get the bird into the booth. I shot the body today and plan to shoot the hood and deck lid in the morning. Should be driving the car by Friday if all goes well.
Everyone's trying to talk me into putting the rallyes off of my runner onto the bird for the car show this weekend. I can't believe no one likes my Centerlines. I was planning to steal the Boyds off of the cuda but I think one of my kids is driving it to the show so no go on that idea.
I'll probably just put the Centerlines back on and surprise everyone.

There's at least a half dozen of them up here.  You better stay with the Black Ice themed wheels to keep from being a belly button ride.

The guy that bought my paint stores from me back in the 90's now has a new paint store here. He lets me buy everything at cost and he just happens to carry the white Carbo paper. I've never had any bleed through from the urethanes with the Carbo paper so I've never seen the need to switch.

I think you guys are right about the rallyes. I really want the car to retain the Black Ice theme. Tom's been trying to get the old Enkei's back for me so that I can keep them as part of the history of the car. I'm only making a couple of changes. I'm removing the console and going back to the correct non console shifter and I removed the extra spoiler that Tom built since it drags the edge of the concrete badly every time I pull it into the garage. I'm afraid I'll damage the nose if I leave it on. I will keep the spoiler of course in case I decide to put it back on at some point.

looks great  Im still trying to get the enkeis off the hick.  I will tell you what  I tried to do at the  time was get the most futuristic rims I could find  , if I get you the enkeis  I think you will actually like them as they were never popular and they still look way cool.  I would also keep with the centerlines  just polish em up real good.   its the center caps  that really go with the mean look I was going for.  take and post a pic of the center caps  looks like from the waffen SS.  >  Id definetly put back on the white reflective  wing decals.  oh thats right i think it was good enough shape not to paint it.   Im excited.   you probably can't get any sleep dreaming of  cruising  that dethmobile.

Since  it did have Black Ice Painted on the quarters at one time  , several other band guys nicknamed it.  heres the list.. the Icer--the Ice Bucket--the bucket--the death--the beatings machine--the mobile whorehouse--detherizer.  thats about all I could think of hearing it being called . except when a little kid saw it , and said  look mommy its batman!

The Centerlines are back on the car and the car is out of the booth waiting to be buffed in the morning.

We're getting him used to sitting in a junior dragster since he's only a few years away from joining us in the staging lanes. He loved it. I think he managed to turn every knob and flip every switch. He's 14 months old.

He's going to join us when we take our first ride in the Superbird this weekend. I wanted him to be a part of it so that he can grow up knowing that he was able to share that moment with his grandparents.

I've always enjoyed running different rims and tires on my cars from time to time. We have a cruise-in in a nearby town that we like to attend. I would love to show up with a different set of rims at each show.
I have the Centerlines of course, a set of rallyes, a set of Boyds, a set of steelies and a set of Torq Thrust D's.
I had a new set of Magnum 500's but Allen got them with his Daytona-clona.
I'll definitely have the Centerlines on the car at the wingcar gathering in Branson in June.
As for the first car show, they've increased the chance of rain on Saturday to 50%. That's not a good sign.

As for the first car show, they've increased the chance of rain on Saturday to 50%. That's not a good sign.

This car's been in a snowbank, and you're worried about some rain?  :shruggy:

Getting the car out in the rain doesn't bother me. It's the whole being the only car there at the car show that kind of gets to me.

The rain stopped about noon today so we strapped the car seat in the back and loaded up my grandson and drove downtown. They allowed us to park right in the middle of the street on the local square. A lot of people were there just to see the bird. One of my friends said that everyone thought they had the baddest ride in town until we showed up.
The strange part is that even though finally getting to drive the Superbird was wonderful, the very fact that I was able to make that first trip with my wife and my grandson was the best part of all. I'll never forget it.
We know that our families are more important than our toys but sometimes it just hits you real hard right between the eyes.
My son has many pics on his camera. I chose not to spoil my experience by looking through a camera today.
I'll post a few pics tomorrow.

Thanks Allen.
I absolutely love my Superbird. It is definitely the best car that I've ever owned. I can't count your car since it wasn't finished until after it was officially yours.  ;D
All day long at the show, all I could think of is how nice it would have been to have had your car sitting there with mine. Can't wait for Branson.

Pics should be up tonight.

I look foreward to parking next to Black Ice, I won't be in Branson until Thursday morning.  I have not been able to drive the Daytona as much as I would like but I heve driven it more than any of my cars.  I know the square I think we stopped at a little antique mall one of the days we came down to see the car ( get in you and your sons way)  I simply love the car !!!!  Thank You!

I have a few things more to do to the bird to make it truly roadworthy. I need to change the headlamp switch. The taillights and side markers don't work. Tom included one with the car so that made it a little easier for me. I plan to rebuild the front end, but it really drives pretty nice. I'll do a few mechanical things before really getting it out away from home.
I'm really surprised at how this car has stayed in such great shape considering it's 40 years old. The underside of the car is all original and still has it's undercoating intact. The exhaust system has seen better days but is still together and actually sounds great.
We still had my grandson's car seat in the car so we buckled him in and took him to McDonalds this morning.  It's going to be difficult to go anywhere without telling the life story of the Black Ice Superbird. I've even got people following me around hoping I'll stop somewhere.
This is going to be worse than the Cudas or the wingrunner.   :icon_smile_big:

Okay. Here's a few pics of the car at it's unveiling.

Here's a rundown on what I've done to the car other than paint.

I removed the damaged front spoiler and installed one that Mike Goyette at Dayclona made for me.
I also installed the correct turn signals that I bought from Doug and the new repro lenses that Mike Ross at BEA is selling. I also removed the shaded covers from the turn signal openings. They were both cracked.
I removed the six pack emblems from the hood and replaced the hood pins with newer ones.

As for the interior, I replaced the seat covers and carpet and removed the console and console shifter and replaced it with the correct non-console shifter. I also replaced the package tray. I reinstalled the original door trim panels. They still look pretty nice as did the dash pad and the rest of the interior. The headliner is very nice as well.
I need to get a few pics of the interior. Maybe tomorrow.

On the rear of the car I had the bumper rechromed. It didn't look too bad but it was showing it's age. In the trunk, I bead blasted the wing braces and repainted them and installed a new trunk lid gasket.

I will need to repaint the right front fender. It has a few fisheyes which I think was caused by trash blowing out of the headlamp right headlamp bucket due to my poor taping. The body is very straight. There are very few flaws. I didn't paint the wing since it was pretty nice and I didn't want to go through the hassle of installing the wing decals. I had enough trouble applying the ones to the 69 runner last year.

Anyway, the show was down on attendance due to the bad weather earlier in the day. We took home a top 25 trophy despite my not opening the hood or the trunk which they usually require. I didn 't have time to freshen up under the hood and I think that the car makes a better display with the hood and deck lid down. Certainly makes for better photos. I wonder how many pics were taken yesterday.

I want to thank Tom Ferry for helping me live mine and my wife's dream. He worked his tail off getting this car ready to ship to me. That's an entire other story right there. He will always be an important part of the history of this car.

I also want to thank my son, Brent, and my friend, Adam, for helping get this thing together at the last minute.  I couldn't have done it without them. They are true professionals and I'm lucky to have them working here with me.

More pics to come.

We didn't have time to paint the front spoiler. I think it'll look much better black. I'm also thinking about putting flat black Plymouth decals on the quarters and possibly put the flat black Superbird stripes on the back edge of the deck lid.
I have an NOS right hand mirror and would like to find either an NOS left mirror or a really nice original. I also need to locate an original antenna.
I'm going to attempt to use as many oem parts on the car as possible and try to stay away from repro items.

I want to personalize the car some but keep the Black Ice look as much as possible.

Mike,
I bought the correct nos passenger side so I guess I'll try to find the driver's side. I appreciate the offer. That spoiler that you made lined right up with the original holes and bolted up with no problems. How do you do that?  :yesnod:

Tom,
As for the adrenaline rush, I know exactly what you mean. I always planned to keep the fog lamps. They look great and they may come in handy some dark night. I can't get over how clean the inside of the nose is. There is no rust or buildup whatsoever. This car just keeps throwing out surprises. I had a guy ask me if I had restored the car. I said, no it didn't need to be restored. I just freshened up the paint a little. I never, ever intended for this car to be some perfect trailer queen, but it's actually ended up being nicer than I had planned.

Those flat black decals will look bad ass!   :2thumbs:  One thing about the decals, you can change them out next year just because.  I put the black matte call outs on my hood against the gloss black out & love the hell out of the look.  If I would have won your Daytona sweepstakes I would have wanted the flat black DAYTONA stripe.

One thing's for sure.  There's not another one like yours out there.  Whatever you do will be a first.  Lookin' good my friend.

Mike, you do realize that you were a big part in making this happen for us. I appreciate you and Allen placing your trust in me is the whole process of buying a car that's half way across the world. Well, Allen's only seven hours from here, but you get the point. It wasn't easy putting together a deal where all three of us could send funds, etc., but I think we all ended up with some pretty nice cars. I had to put a ton of faith in Tom. I was sending money to a guy that I didn't know and knew nothing about. He came through for me with flying colors...and then some.
It was hard trying to work around here today and not want to go over and play with the bird. There are so many little things that I want to do to it.

They're forecasting rain again for Friday, Saturday and Sunday. Crap!!! That makes about four weekends in a row.
At least my son was able to drag race last weekend but the track was kind of slick due to all of the rain. I was too tired from thrashing on the bird to even load my racecar up.
Maybe in a week or so.
The plan has been to go to a car show and then come home, drop off the bird and jump into the truck with the racecar already loaded. We'll see.

You got that right... ;D

I bought a gear vendors overdrive from a friend of mine and today I ordered the conversion kit to bolt it to my 4-speed. That should make the car much nicer to drive on the highway with those 3:54 gears. That will make the final ratio 2:76. I also ordered a new set of seat belts from Mike Ross at BE&A. The orginals look pretty good but I just don't trust 40 year old seat belts. I'll box the originals up with some of the other Superbird stuff.

Mike mentioned that he only has a few sets of the Superbird turn signal lenses left. After these are gone there won't be another run. I ordered a set back when he first started selling them and they look and fit great. I'll order another set for spares in a few weeks. I've been spending way too much money lately.

Well...I hit a little speed bump. Saturday, I was firing the car up to go for a drive after the rain moved out and smoke started pouring out from under the dash and from under the hood. Seems that the horn relay decided to come apart and short out against the dash. It fried that harness all of the way through. That thing is toast. I hate it because of the low mileage on the car, it was a nice harness.  I don't understand why they run the horn relay off of the main power wire the way that they do. It seems like the fusible link would have protected everything. All it did was light up and smoke while the rest of the harness fried right along with it.

I ordered a new dash harness and an engine harness as well as a new horn relay and a new style ammeter. Hopefully, I can have the car back on the road by this weekend. I'll have to use the time that I had allowed to install the GVO to install the harnesses. No overdrive for me this weekend. It took a couple of hours to remove the harness from the dash and will take two or three to get it back in.
I did get my new seat belts from BE&A today so I can go ahead and get those installed while I'm waiting on the harnesses.
I guess some people would be totally bummed out but it's just another thing that life throws at you sometimes. I don't waste my time worrying about things like this...I just jump into correcting the situation and moving on.

I still love this car.  :yesnod:

I may have the fender support rods or at least one side.  That new Year One dash harness was a joke. Some of the terminals won't slide over the spades on the washer pump switch. And the starter relay wire doesn't have power all of the way through the harness. Just to be able to make the show in Hot Springs, Brent had to wire up a start button. It's a sad day when you pay $400 for a harness and it doesn't even work. The last time I bought a Year One harness we had to go in and remove a couple of terminals and remove the plastic sheathing from the wire. They just crimped the terminal ends right onto the wires without stripping the ends. At first we suspected that this was the case here but not that lucky. The strange thing is that the relay wire is a straight uninterrupted wire all of the way through the harness. Well, it's supposed to be.
I was so worried about the overall quality of the harness that I decided to trailer the car. It was a pain just getting it onto and off of the trailer without ripping the front spoiler off.  I need longer ramps. Once we got to Hot Springs we took it off of the trailer and after the show was over, we drove around the city some. Everything worked just fine.
I already have the Moog parts to rebuild the front suspension so I'll try to get that done in a week or so.

Oh, and the car cover came in last week so the car has a little more protection now.

The way I see it is M&H has the market cornered so they let the customer do the final testing. I don't think they have a quality control department. The last two harnesses have proved that to me. Now I have to decide whether to have YO send me another harness and spend four or five hours changing it out or just spend an hour or less and repair this one. If I repair it myself, it seems like they've won. They meaning YO and M&H.

We got the Black Bird out yesterday and drove about 100 miles. It was 95 out and it tried to run a little warm.
When I installed the new dash harness, I didn't get the auxiliary electric fan hooked back up. I guess I better get on that before Branson.

The day before we left for the Branson wingcar gathering, we attended a Mopar show at the drag strip where my son and I race. The Black Ice bird was chosen as Best of Show. After our picture was taken, I made a pass down the strip. Man that car moves when you kick in the other two carbs. We also received a big trophy last Thursday at the local cruise night. We're going to run out of room quick at this rate.
I put the rallyes on the car for the cruise night to see how they looked on the car. I'll take a few pics later and post them. I'll trade back and forth on the wheel combination from time to time.
We leave to go back to Branson this Friday. More heat, more traffic and more fun.

She's always been a speed freak. I set the 71 Barracuda up with Simpson harnesses on the passenger side as well and Brent gave her his old Simpson helmet. This track will let you carry a passenger on test and tune night in the radial classes. She can't wait.

We took the Superbird back to Branson this weekend for the Route 66 Mopar show at area 57. About noon a thunderstorm rolled in and almost blew a canopy onto the bird. Fortunately, some people that were standing behind my car managed to grab the canopy just as it swung by the wing. I grabbed the side and managed to help them keep it from flying up again. Very close call. The guy that owned the canopy didn't pin it down and he was off somewhere eating lunch when the storm hit. At least the rain cooled things off for a while.
Here's a couple of pics of the car at the show. It looks different with the rallyes on it. I'll trade them back and forth with the Centerlines from time to time just to be different.

Note the destroyed canopy in the background of the second pic.

Next week is race weekend so the bird gets a break from doing the car show thing. Time to play with the Barracuda.

The latest chapter on the Black Ice Bird.

About 3 weeks ago I bought the Black Ice true Superbird from Larry Roper. He had several people showing interest and 1 very serious guy. I told him I did not want to snatch it from under anyone and to please call the 1 guy back and tell him that the money was available from another buyer who said this 1st guy had dibs. When the 1st guy could not follow through I then bought the car.

It is the history of the car that really grabbed my interest. First-that it was bought from a police impound lot in 1982 for $300 after being abandoned on the street in LA. Then Tom Ferry buying the car, painting it black and using it in marketing for his band, plus the cool fresh air  hood. Finally, the fact that Larry Roper had owned it for so many years, resprayed it and kept it unchanged. I know Larry from my yellow Daytona I bought many years ago, and he is as up-front and honest a Mopar lover as can be found.

The car is incredible. We cut and buffed the paint over the weekend, and I tuned it tonight. There are several minor things to do, but what a great car, and the black color really gets set off in the sun. The tires are old, some little things need to be fixed or changed to my liking, but it is a 4-speed with a 6 barrel, fresh air and 6-coat deep black gloss paint job that is absolutely gorgeous, even from 1 foot away. I even got the "BlkkIce" personalized  plate that was on it when Tom Ferry had it. I would love to get a set of those 1985 Enkei  rims he had on it too.

Look for  it at World of Wheels in Louisville in January, and thanks to Larry Roper for his honesty and care of the car.

We are getting Black Ice ready for the World of Wheels Show in Louisville on the 22nd/23rd. Have put on new tires, complete tune up, redid all dash wiring to factory gauges and fixed a number of issues (tach, reversed dash light indicator, radio, speaker, rear package tray, antifreeze, trans and diff lube, repaired wiper motor, back up lights and other small things.)

I will be replacing the exhaust next weekend and started on a "judges book" which I put in the front seat of all the cars.

An interesting piece of paperwork is the "abandoned vehicle" title, tow receipt and purchase for $125 in 1983. Last titled in Texas in 1981, it had apparently been abandoned on the street on Los Angeles area at that time. Sadly, the lady that bought it was murdered by her husband a few years later.

After months of minor repairs such as tires, exhaust, rebuilt the 6 bbl carbs, wiring updates, etc, I drove the black ice Bird to Mobile Alabama for yesterday and today's Moparfest at the Battleships. Great people, great cars, great weather and once again the only wing car there. Incredible attention to the car, but the best story was when a band member of a heavy metal band walked up and said he knew the Band (Black Ice), played in a heavy metal band, and collected 1980's heavy metal albums. Tom if you read this, you would love him! His picture even fits the car and I got his permission today to post it.

The car looks fantastic !  I love that car and its history! I sent an email to Tom. I used to keep in contact with him but haven't herd from him in some time. He is the best! That man helped me out so much over the years. I don't think my S. bird would exist with out his help and all the templates he sent me. Hopefully he will see that his car is in good hands and still out there !

Has anyone herd from Tom? I tried to message him here and sent email to both his accounts and never herd anything. Just wishing him the best and that things are ok. I know he had retired so maybe just busy.
