I remembering hearing rumors that they actually did it. No idea if there was any basis to that theory.  :shruggy:

Funny you should say that....................the thought crossed my mind too. :-\ Although I can't figure what they would from unless they were insured against such a thing.

This goes back quite awhile but I think the theory was they were not going to be competitive with their setup and this was a way out. Probably was some type of insurance involved.

Wasn't there a story on tech's finding a radio controlled nitrous bottle hidden in the scoop too?  :ahum:

Don't remember anything about hidden nitrous.........hmmmm. I thought at the time the dodge boys were doing very well at the track, but I'm trusting my memory on that!

I also remember there was a t-shirt that came out after the break-in that had a picture of a sledge hammer and the words 'The only way to beat a Dodge!'

I forget all the details too. They were very competitive up to that point and maybe the nitrous story was a excuse from the competition.

not for one minute suggesting they done it them selves ,  wasn't there a big disagreement between the two main guys at Wayne county , and one of them wanted to pull out for personal reasons can't be sure though :scratchchin:, i remember seeing one of the motors , one of the rear corners had been smashed clean off , so the gear box could not be bolted up :rotz: . strange though who ever done this only wreaked the motors .

I think the popular rumor was that they got caught with nitrous and that their punishment was to destroy all their stuff and make it look like a break in.  It seems odd to me, but the other part of the rumor is that MOPAR didn't want one of their teams to get caught cheating so they allegedly worked with NHRA to cover this incident up.   Sounds too fishy to me, but who knows...

I always will suspect Warren Johnson having something to do with it.   He had NO sponsor early that year as the Mopar guys were cleaning up.     After this deal happened,  there wasn't much competition again and he cleaned up and got a sponsor again.

You're right. They were not going to be competitive with their setup (without the nitrous); and it was going to look quite obvious when they quit using it.
Billy Glidden spilled the beans to the NHRA that he was running nitrous and showed them how he was doing it and what to look for.

Fact: Many racers were using nitrous in the same time period, some got caught some didn't.

Fact: Mopar was (is) a major sponsor of the NHRA races.

If NHRA found out that the Dodge boys were using laughing gas and suspended them from competition it would be a major publicity fiasco. To avoid same they staged the breakin.

Quite believable to me.

I agree.  I don't know exactly what went on or why, but the whole thing smelled a lot more like a staged incident than a true break-in.

I do remember it and the contraversy that surrounded it for a few months. And looking back it does seem like everyone just wanted it to quietly fade away and be forgotten. That was the impression I got from it. And the rumors and innuendos that followed did sort of point to a staged event to "remove" a team and go quietly into the night.
