Title: What's this part called, and what's it do?

The car is a 1969 with a 318 and a 904. I started hearing something rattling under the car yesterday while I was going over a bumpy road, and it turned out to be that part. It appears to be attached to the bottom of the back of the transmission with just one bolt, and the bolt is loose. I could tighten the bolt, which will probably loosen up again over time, but if it isn't a necessary part, I'd rather just remove it.

Transmission tail shasft counterweight or counter balance. It saves from harmonic vibrations. It should get 2 bolts

Thanks. I'll leave it on there then. I just crawled under the car as much as I could without jacking it up, and it should have 3 bolts securing it to the transmission. 2 of them are missing and 1 was loose. I tightened the one bolt and will replace the 2 missing ones. Additionally, it has a couple of bolts that secure the weight itself to the mounting plate, and those seem to be loose too. I assume those are supposed to be tight.

Only two bolts on the damper, it should bolt directly to the tail housing..

Mine looks different than yours. There are 3 bolts holding mine to the tail housing, plus 2 bolts holding the weight to its mounting bracket. They are arranged like this (as seen when looking straight up at the bottom of it from underneath the car):

I tightened up the 1 mounting bolt that was still in it, which was enough to keep it from rattling while I drove to my friend's garage, then I put in the 2 missing bolts. It doesn't move now.

Yeap, you got the bigger one which is NORMALLY for 727s. I was searching one pic or diagram of those because the pic you posted didn't seem to be the one is more common which is the one John posted.

Its a vibration damper used to tone down drviveline harmonics

1st appeared in the early 70s , was quite common but late 70s thru the 80s cars

NOT oem on anything 1970 or older

My 72 had the one attached to the floor. It had rubber isolators that were worn out. It was causing some vibration I assume from the worn out isolators. I just removed it.
