Title: Sent my ‘69 Charger 1300+ miles for body/paint work! (Updated!)
Post by: rikubot on October 02, 2020, 10:53:32 PM
A couple years ago I sent my car off for new quarters, roof skin, trunk drop downs, valance and a few other things. I paid up front and got the car back with a lot to be desired. I was told the metal work was finished, but you didn't have to look closely to see that it wasn't done right. Fast forward to now: my car is currently at Harrington Classic Car Restorations in Asheboro, NC (1300 miles away, I live in Colorado). I've been watching their page on Instagram for over a year now and I am blown away at the level of detail in his work. So far I am very happy with my experience with the shop and Kevin, the body/paint Wizard. He posts updates almost everyday of the work he is doing. Definitely a workaholic.

The first photo is the state of the car as my dad bought it. It's had a few changes since then but nothing major to the body. The picture of the valance corners are from after I got it back from the first body shop. Notice anything wrong? Lol. The next one is the car getting loaded for the trip to Asheboro and a few from Kevin's Instagram going over the car trying to decide how he's going to fix what the other shop did wrong.

I've got quite a few pictures to share from Kevin at the shop. A lot of progress has been made on the car.

- He has fixed the areas where the trim didn't fit well (both windshield and rear window)

- Filler the seam between the quarters and rocker panels with patches

- He got the doors gapped and perfect

- The passenger side door got a piece grafted in from another door because of a rust issue

- He filled in the sail panel seam with a strip of metal and welded it in

- The unibody has been sanded, epoxied, body worked and primed

- The deck lid has been body worked and primed (it was in poor shape)

I also want to note that the body was in really rough shape both from the previous work and 50 years of a hard life. We are still looking for a rear bumper for it before he can finish fitting the new tail light panel and fixing the valence corners. Super exciting stuff!  :popcrn:

Yep, another one. I can tell you which shop in Littleton, CO to avoid. Sadly I'm not looking to pursue any recourse. I figured it would be more trouble than it's worth. I'm very happy to have found a good shop, even if it was halfway across the country 😜

I could never do what this guy does. And he's faster and more affordable than I expected! I'm pretty certain that he will be finished before I have my engine ready and I've got a lot of little things left to do that are going to add up in cost which will slow me down even more.

I don't think I did. I'm pretty sure I'm going with the B5 blue, but I haven't ruled out others if you have suggestions or pics. There's a nice turquoise that was really rare for '69 that I really like too 🤔

Awesome progress and really nice work. HCC is only about 1hr20min from me so it's great to see such a good shop that's close if/when I farm out the bodywork on my car.

Not that you know me at all but if you ever need/want another set of Charger owner eyes to check on the car let me know I'd be happy to take a ride.

I have not heard anything about them. I have the AMD bumpers on my 68 and they are nice from a distance but the chrome is far from perfect.

The grille was in the car when I bought it. I had to do some plastic repair, sanding, and painting. It's still not perfect but it will do for me. The chrome is brand new from AMD.

Here are some photos I've found online that represent the look I'm going for.

I want to have the tail light panel blacked out with the R/T emblem, the sail panels gotta have the Charger emblem, hard top, Magnum 500s - 15x8s on rear and 15x7s on front, although those bigger wheels on the car in the first picture sure do look good too. So far I'm leaning toward a black bumblebee stripe.

If you have any comments or recommendations I'd be glad to hear them!

6 days or 48 hours to sand & rub 2 Quarter Panels, So they probably got 200 hours sanding & rubbing the whole Car which would probably cost about $10,000.00. Now I know why the Guy that Bought my Old Charger decided not to get it Restored there, He did say they were to expensive for him so He's going to a more low Budget place unfortunately :scratchchin: :shruggy: LEON.

Yes.
I found a place local here in the desert. I've seen his work and I've talked to him numerous times. He seems to be on it and he really wants to do a "Daytona". Since he's never done one before.
We've already talked colors and what needs to be done. My son mostly... with my help... needs to wrap up the heavy metal work.
Now that it's getting hot...  ::) we'll hit it hard...

I've started to over here... http://www.dodgecharger.com/forum/index.php/topic,139275.0.html
Click on that Ramcharger Central link there for a more complete story.
I'm trying to figure out the clunky way to post pictures here at DodgeCharger. I think I've figured it out... stupid resizing issues.  ::)
So I'll try to post pictures directly from now on.
We had a few things get in the way this last couple of months... the project came to a standstill.  My son and I will start to hit it hard hopefully by this weekend.

Spring time is just about perfect for working on cars. Keep us posted on the progress. You've got quite the build going on!

The image upload on here is definitely clunky. I've found that if I screen cap and crop on my iPhone 6s it seems to let them load up.

Well, we have two season here in the desert. Spring and summer.
And spring can get quite toasty too.
We do have a big swamp cooler in my son's shop. And we have some decent fans too.
It can get quite ugly though.

I was fairly certain that I wanted to paint my car B5 blue but lately I've been seen some red ones and a few others that have been making me doubt myself. If you have another idea or car that you really like, please feel free to post pictures of them here.

All great colors on Chargers.

What kinda yellow are you thinking? I'm preferring to stay with a color from the '69 year.

I agree. Unique indeed. I'd like a touch of uniqueness with mine as well but maintain the overall integrity of the vintage nature of the car.

I'm jealous.
My project has been sitting for almost 2 months. Too many things getting in the way. Hopefully this week/ weekend things will start rolling again.
I need to order the Daytona kit from Janek because they have a lead time going.
Dang.
I want this done by next year sometime. My 50th high school class reunion is happening then. I would love to pull up in my clone.  ;)
This is probably just a dream though. I'm pushing for a goal though.

They really are doing some noble work by re-making these panels. Think of all the cars that have been saved only because they make the parts that are so badly needed. We must all be grateful for AMD!

Are you just using a normal heater box instead of the a/c heater box ?

Not sure if the heater core water pipes are in the same spot from one to the other
Was just wondering why some of the holes were left not filled in

Yes Sublime I am switching from AC to just heater. There's one more hole to the left of that one that he needs to drill back out. I think there will be a few stragglers down low that I'll need to plug but for the most part all the AC holes hot patched.
