Said it's car # 47 built if that helps. His show is great. This one was more of an extra after hours episode. Sound was pretty bad on this one.

If one is luckily enough to have their fender tag or BCsheet, then there's a somewhat barometer of telling where you stand in terms of the C500 production run.. All Charger 500's have 925 starting their VON, the last three digits usually corresponds to the placement of the vehicle related to others... Not bullet proof for I'm sure there were orders that were cancelled.....

Guys, this is XX29L9B144173, I had a long chat with the owner, Gene, and he told me he had contacted Daniel in the past. He says he is pretty sure the fender tag is somewhere in his files, and that he never looked for a broadcast sheet... so one might turn up as it is disassembled I looked quickly, none on the glovebox or under front seats...
I am good friends with Nick, and asked if I could assist in making sure that all the special 500 stuff would be redone right, even if the car will not be concours restored!
I'll keep this forum informed of the progress of the resto as much as I can,

Yeah I spent about 1-2 hours on the phone with Gene the owner over the past day. Very nice guy. I am helping him get a few missing pieces for the car, and he is still looking for the broadcast sheet he pulled out of the car early on in its life.

Danny.. Is it a very early C500... Like Richard's 610 car, I notice the body plug in the firewall by the windshield wiper motor..............

Haha, yes, I've asked Nick to tag everything to i.d. location, etc... noticed they seem to be all different!
Right now, Nick and owner are still debating what kind of work he wants done, and after discussing with Dan, he might want to go more ''correct'', but I am sure none of the deviations from stock would be irreversible. I've noticed that often, long-time owners who want to get their old car restored are not as much into 100% correctness, and would rather have the car as they actually drove it, with period mods...

Interior teardown starting, and one nice surprise in a plastic bag under the passenger seat!
Original windshield was carefully taken out, should be re-used, to get access to the dash bolts.
The wiring did not suffer too much, with no aftermarket gauges or radio added early in life, like many of those cars... Again, original will be cleaned, repaired as needed and re-used.
Lots of the original Y2 Yellow peeking out (It will go back to Y2)
More here as it progresses, and on Nick's Garage on YouTube!

Those two little clips hold the end corners of the bottom windshield stainless trim

Disassembly continues, this car is sooooo clean! floors are perfect, in fact the only damage is on the passenger side, and it was done when they took it out of storage earlier this year...
There is only some scaling on the trunk floor... Let's see how it looks after it comes back from the dipper!

Body and parts are back from chemical stripping, and it's even better than expected!
It's at the body shop now, https://showtimemusclecars.com/welcome/
Here are some pics, I took more than 150, almost every square inch!
I was surprised to see that it started out as a stripe delete car, as it has holes for the R/T emblem on the quarters, which you could not see under the ''500'' stripe...
Should be in paint in 8-12 weeks at the most, as Nick has promised the owner to try and finish it within one year (Which is about how long it would have taken for another well-known shop to simply look at it...).

FYI all 500's left the assembly line as V88 stripe delete cars. There is probably some forgotten box somewhere with about 1000 69 Charger "R/T" quarter panel emblems in it.

QuoteSo they all have holes on the quarter panels that had to be filled by Creative? Also in lead?

It seems that the holes were done with plastic body filler as seen on some cars with the filler swiped in the inside of the quarter to fill the holes. I can't tell on mine because it was repainted.

Thanks for those close up shots of the rear window plug and lead melted away. I had not seen that in detail before.

Check out the two front lower metal splash shields where creative industries cut so they could pull the front bumper off with the brackets all connected. I don't see the extra pieces in the pics with all the parts, so they should still be attached to the car. Just another detail that has to be duplicated using the exact same pieces when reassembled.

Related info - Back many decades ago, there was a guy selling Creative take off parts at a swap meet in Michigan.
He had the front bumpers, bumper brackets and the valance, all in one big assemply, for sale.

Said they were take off parts from Daytona conversions.   :Twocents:

Does anyone know if some of the 500 / Daytona take off parts went back into Chrysler's spare parts inventory? Reason I ask is, I ordered a new '69 rear deck lid from a Michigan dealership back in about 1980. The deck lid that came in was already painted F6 green and had the jacking instruction decal on it. it also had the parts depot tag affixed to it. It had obviously been on a car when built but showed no wear other than minimal handling. I believe Creative modified the deck lids they took off, but could some of them have been returned?

That's my theory so far. Oddly enough it is not on all 500's. Early cars Yes. Later cars it disappears. Still working on exact cut off dates.

Update on the 500 at the beginning of the video, had to replace the center part of the trunk floor, too many little holes.
Roger managed to keep the factory spot welds...

I skipped straight passed it doh...(dork me)

Great idea to spray inside with the trunk floor removed!
My trunk floor was already replaced in the USofA so didn't have that option.
Its real tricky getting in the trunk and spray painting! :paintingpink: :paintingpink: :paintingpink:

That underfloor paint looks a little 'light' to me?
We spent many an hour with Galen, getting the colour right and it was much (much) darker and more GREY!

It tends to change over the years to the lighter grey/green but factory 'dip primer' is deffo dark grey... :2thumbs:

Probably was Ben!

He is the Paint Guru for Mopars...

But when we did some hemi-Daytona's back in the 'Naughties' (2000's) Galen Govier re-researched the 'primer-dip' color tone again.
Folks were painting their cars 'too light' underneath, it should be dark Gray not battleship Gray...
I would call it 'LIGHT-BLACK' not Dark GRAY myself?

So after all that underbody prep, the painter repainted the rear 'wheel-houses' in BODY COLOR??? :scratchchin:
There should be some light dusting of body color on the frame rails as the cars were painted in a Booth 'on the floor'...(probably with wheels on too).

Overpainting comes to mind here, but 'what do I know' lol... :2thumbs:  :slap:

Paint 'was and still' is expensive and the Bean-counters would not allow for this much paint... :Twocents: :Twocents: :Twocents: (ask Henry Ford)...

A very strong 440 indeed!

The link has stopped working, but I did view it before.

I seem to remember the stocker '1970 GTX' 440ci engine being built with similar a 'bottom end', 9th November 2020. (Kowalski build)

But the 'ported' iron heads and stock intake only made 390bhp, whereas.

This 'trickflow' headed beastie is over 140 bhp more with an AVS carb...(and 69 aircleaner)

Surely the heads can't be that much better with just an ali dual plane? :scratchchin: :scratchchin: :scratchchin:

I think we are back to the FACT, that the stock 440ci intake and iron exhaust manifolds are POO!

This has been demonstrated MANY times by 'Nick' and others... :2thumbs: :2thumbs: :2thumbs:

thats one of the things i do / did not like with the  aftermarket alumimum heads ,  visual shape !!   440 source got it right with the  stealth heads !
i was weighing up getting a pair of aftermarket heads long before the stealth heads came out , & was thinking about  taking a die grinder & a da with 40 / 80 grit & smoothing out the sharp edges do a bit of exterior reshaping before painting! as they look to space age ! ok for a race car but .....  :shruggy:

Post by: Fisher on October 07, 2021, 03:32:55 PM
I Know Eugene, and have been helping him with this build to some degree. Eugene has a vision of what he wants his car to be and what his HP goals are. Yes He wants to keep the car as close to original as possible. He also told me a term i have not heard in years, this is a "Day Two Car" Day one you buy it, day Two you take it apart and modify it. Like every other hotrodder in the 60's, the idea was to have a fast daily driver that you could tolerate on a daily basis.

As for the carb, Nick used the thumper carb which is an extremely refined carb with adjustable air bleeds and polished venturies. They are close to $900.00 here in Canada. Eugene bought that 780 vacuum secondary carb new in 1971, and has had it ever since. It is an era correct carb for this application. It will work fine for what he needs, and will deliver more than enough CFM according to what the motor used for cfm on the dyno. The 780 can be used at the track, then swapped with the factory AVS carb for car shows and freeway driving?

A few simple bolt ons are not that big a deal for this car. Eugene has all the factory parts to make the car the way he bought it new in Sept 1968.

At the end of the day this is my friends car, and i will respect all his decisions in this build. He knows what he has and will not destroy the car in anyway. I am as excited as he is to see it finished.

Well said Fisher!

I always thought that the Carter AVS was 'just an OK carb'... :hah:

But the dyno has shown it to be as good if not better than the 'old Holley'... :pity:

''DAY TWO'' is a great expression, but I would say ''YEAR TWO'' myself.

After a 4 year build of my 71 Duster, i was very careful when i drove it as well. I would go out early mornings or after 10 pm when all the idiots were off the streets. Lots of "New Canadians" here who were used to driving in foreign countries, that should not have a licence. I have an empty garage right now, so just waiting for the right B Body to come along?

I do know a guy who bought a 70 Hemi Cuda, and raced it the same weekend he bought it 'NEW'.

I never bought a 'new car' myself, never had the money, but I just love 'old stuff' better.
'30 to 40% devaluation' just driving it off the forecourt always got me feeling a little sick... :puke:

Plenty of folks have (had) got cars they have raced and wrecked, bet they is feeling sorry now... :slap:

That is why I would never drive my Charger 500 'on the street' or a 'drag strip', too many idiots out there for my liking... :patriot: :drive: :bump:

Why on earth have a 500 if your not ever going to drive it on the street? I gladly hoped in my HEMI 500 here in Indiana and drove all night down to Atlanta Georgia, and then over to Talladega for the reunion. Round trip was 1,610 miles on the road. If something happens to it, something happens to it, but I for one will always drive my cars. No reason to have them if I wasn't going to drive it.

The blue 500 in your last post is still owned by the original owner.

I know that your car isn't restored or running yet, I was making a rhetorical comment about why have these old cars if you don't intend to drive them. I will admit I LOVE looking at them. But they  are way more fun to drive than to just look at.

There was a famous UK 69 Charger called 'LFN 7', F8 green with SE leather interior!

It won lots of street races and even won a street car 'shoot-out' called 'GARY'S PICNIC'  at Santa Pod raceway.

Think she used to run 11 seconds in the Quarter which was very fast back in the 80's.
It was a New York State car and suffered from 'rust issues' and was kept on the street in the UK.

Anyways, she was restored in the late 80's by a friend of mine and then by me in the early 90's.
I drove her for a few years, but the rust 'came back' with a vengence!

So she went back to the restorer for another 'repaint' in 1994 and then back to New York State lol...

Non Aero 500 with a 70 rear trim... :slap:

Great car, but it cost me a small fortune to maintain and run... :pity:
Sadly don't have any pictures so I found this as a replacement (makes me laugh)

The Dirty Mary Charger is nowhere near the colour of Eugenes car. Eugenes car is Y2 yellow. Under different types of lighting, Eugenes car seems to transform the colour. I cant wait to see the car in person out in the sun.

Thanks John.  Happy New Year to you and your family also.
I was in contact with him for a few years trying to buy the car.  He did say that he put it inside a building.  This would have been in the late 1980s.

The car is Y2 yellow Period. The lites in the shop make it look green at times. As for disc brakes this car didn't come with them so why add them. Eugene has upgraded the shoes, and will be using DOT 5 fluid. The car will stop just fine. HP has nothing to do with stopping distance. 60 mph is 60 mph regardless of hp . Yes a disc brake car will have a short stopping distance over a drum brake car, but who really cares.

Yes i am 60 years old, i grew up with drum brake cars. I just sold my 71 Duster, was a 4 wheel drum brake car. If you know how to drive, drum brakes are not an issue. Just because these manufacturers who sell all this upgrade shit say drums are no good doesn't make it true.

I had the standard HD drums brakes all the way around on my 1st C500 and they worked just fine.. They would lock the wheels up no problem.

Thats what i am saying Troy. All these car show's on TV who are all sponsored by parts places, are prostituting parts for those companies. Then people get it in their heads that they need that stuff and anything else is sub par. I grew up in a small town out in the country, lots of rich farm kids we were not them lol. Kevin Burns had a 68 Hemi Charger 4 wheel drums, he rolled the car one night, not sure where it went? Brian Neighbrandt had a 68 440 charger drum brakes, Nelson Matechuk had a 69 440 super bee drum brakes. Everything we had on the farm was drum brakes, i started driving when i was 12-13 years old. Been building cars and working on cars for the last 44 years. Unless you are going road course racing every weekend, save your money, leave the car Stock.

My 70 coronet has drums all around.(stock) will block the wheels with now worry. 100+ to 0 can be don at least 2 times without boiling.
and with no power it is much better than stock discĀ“s. (driver vise) but of course you will get it to boil if you drive it hard.

Yea, I was just reading that Formula 1 will be incorporating drum brakes in their cars this year due to the performance gains over carbon fiber disk brake rotors.  I'll have to see if Brembo is making any drums that I can swap into my Charger.    :slap:

C'mon guys, I get the purist thing, I really do but in real world driving situations such as a panic stop on the highway you are going to tell me that drums perform better than disks? The brakes lock up easily with no problem and that is supposed to be a good thing?  Car shows sponsored by parts places? Didn't Chrysler add disk brakes from the factory on their cars? Who sponsored them?

Are you going to tell me next that bias ply tubed tires are better than radials? This is great.  :popcrn:

Its all about originality over drivability I guess?

Some cars drive better than others and Cuda's are one car that does!
I have worked on a friends 70 sixpack Cuda one owner and low miles, it drove badly!

We completely overhauled the suspension and did a 'shade tree' alignment...

It drove real nice and we told the owner to get it digitally done for 'peace of mind'!
He said it was better than ever but he would get it done on the correct settings...

Yep after it was done it drove like CRAP again, oh well...

I've had several Chargers of all years and sizes, some of the R/T cars were terrible and dangerous at speed.

But when it came to driving and stopping, my 1970 383ci 4-speed Cuda was easily the BEST, by far (disc brakes) lol...

Hi Folks,                 03 February 2022

Going to jump in here just for the heck of it. We have had four MOPAR cars, 68 Hemi RR, 69 440-6 SB, 69 Hemi Daytona (Now Bob's) and a 70 Hemi Cuda 4-Spd, the only one of the four with discs. The only two with Power Brakes are the Daytona and the Cuda.

Of the four, the Daytona was the car we drove the most. We had it up to 140 on I-75 North in the UP of Michigan in 1974. The drum brakes were massive and did just fine, as they did for the other two.

The Cuda was driven very little the three years we had it. We didn't much care for that car as we felt it was the sorriest car we ever had. Rode like a western movie buck-board and was very uncomfortable on trips of more than a few blocks. Noise was another factor, too much and too loud. Seats uncomfortable, too low to the ground causing bad visibility in traffic. In other words that car sucked big time. The only thing I found easy to do with it was a "Bootlegger's Turn," a 180 for those who don't know.

About a year after we sold it, it was rolled up in a ball sitting in a junkyard. Do we wish we still had it? YES, it would be worth a bundle.

The Daytona was a dream to drive and never had an issue with the brakes.

The RR and SB have so few miles on them and were hardly driven. They are wearing big fat drums, which will remain on the SB as we want it bone stock as we plan to sell it.

The RR will get disks on all fours, just for looks. She is going to be our local drive-in, car show, street racer queen. We are getting ready to order a crate Hemi for her and have her original engine rebuilt back to stock specs. Since we have two Hemi K members we plan to have two fully functional engines and transmissions for her; plug and play if you will.

In our opinion, Disc Brakes are nicer looking, if you have the wheels to show them off.

We could  tell you that; if you believe it, do so at your own peril.

That's our 2 cents worth, which is probably more than it's worth.

Best Always

Ticking headers are nothing new in the performance world. A nice thick Header gasket solves that problem. As for the 4 spd, why do that, the car is numbers correct with the automatic. Plus rowing a 4 spd gets old after awhile. Eugenes car is perfect, and the way he wanted it. Just got off the phone with him, he is excited to get his car.

Not trying to pry or be a big snoop but does anyone in the know know how much Nick would have charged to do this restoration ?

Just curious after working on my 70 Charger and having to pay a few different people to do some stuff for me ( engine rebuild , bodywork )

Can pm me if that is best

Thanks

A fellow Canadian

A top resto, ten years ago was $100,000... :popcrn:

Maybe $150K?

If the Charger 500 prices go to where they should be, then a profit is in order methinks... :2thumbs:
