I like this line
I think we found the original watermelon wing
Really cool item.
I've seen this wing in person and I have posted some pics of it on here before....so whatcha think...is it off the Watermelon Daytona?
Dave
Topped out just over 2K without meeting reserve.
Is that a typical value for one? :shruggy:
I do think it is a really cool item.
I love the part in the description about the "Kings Ransom".
I am sure he is fishing for a big fish here.
For the average Joe, this would probably be worth in the neighborhood of $ 1000 over the cost of another real factory wing.
With his description, the average Joe did not even need to put the effort in to have an underbid.
would be awesome , if it was really off the watermelon Daytona , but ! whos to say someone has not painted the wing in that color combo years back ,for some reason or another then gone over with black :shruggy: :shruggy: :popcrn:
Ad has ended with a new one just posted :) with a little higher price ( think this is where the Kings ransom part comes in )

...but the original wing color has no yellow on it... :shruggy:
like I said in the Winged Warriors facebook group, I'm not holding a lot of truth to that wing on eBay being off the original watermelon car.....look how many times that was painted.....could have come off any car back then...especially in the 70's when painting a car wild colors was the norm......

are there original color pictures of the "watermelon" Daytona? Could the car have been "top banana" before conversion & added "green"?
he needs to remove some black paint & see if the graphics line up :Twocents:

Yes, a color poster sized photo exists. I own the original.
Looks like it's a green car with lighter golden green stripes added.
Agree - the wing should be CAREFULLY striped.
And the fact is that the vintage color pic stripes and wing are not yellow. I'm looking at it right now!
Maybe the car was yellow to start with and then was repainted  :popcrn:

I'd buy that. But the wing would have been primer... Added to the car then sprayed green, then striped off a lighter golden green.
Bottom line: wing needs to be carefully striped down, layer by layer, including the horizontal stabilizer. (for signs of yellow)
could the whole car have been painted yellow first ? as an under coat to lighten up the green layer to come ?

Yes. That's why the entire wing needs to be gently sanded down in areas to get to the aluminum, IMO.
It was talked about here in 2005

Looked at the poster-photo in natural light today. In person, the stripes are avocado green color and flat with no gloss at all. The camera shows the colors a little different than the eye.
The ding on the nose has either primer underneath, or it's bare metal. No other colors are present, for what it's worth.
still for sale...
