Title: Some day it will be a green F6 Daytona clone
Post by: 70 sublime on February 10, 2016, 08:04:11 PM
Well it has officially started
My next project
This thread will be more of a diary than a how to with just stuff I come across along the way
The car is now in the shop to start working on (you can still see the snow on the tires )
Pictures of where I am starting from and where I would like to end up(at least it is going to be green)

In the end that pointy nose is going to cost me some big $$ because as soon as I add it to the front of the car it will no longer fit in my garage
When I had my 70 Charger in the garage I only had about 6" in front and 6" behind to shut the garage door
When that time comes I will either build a new parking spot on the end of the house or a new garage out behind the house

So my first goal will be to just get it road certified as a plain 69 Charger with no wing and no nose without doing anything more than I have to to the body
Just do what is needed new brakes, tires , exhaust, seats .....
Lots to do with no real dead line
One thing I have learned working on cars is it never goes faster than you hope and usually costs you more than you thought by the time you are done

I got this car last summer
It was driven from the west coast to Ohio where it was parked in a shed for about 25 years

The car was born with a 383 but now has a 400 in it when driven cross country

I tinkered with the car a bit after it arrived
The motor was not stuck but I could not get it to turn all the way over by hand
Ended up pulling one head off and found a valve had broken off the stem and just sitting on top of the piston
I had some spare parts around and just put another valve back in the head and bolted things back together to see if it would run

Just jumping some wires under the hood I got it to fire and keep running and that was as far as I had gotten

So now the real fun begins  :2thumbs:

I know how you feel I have to push mine by hand so I don't hit the wall in the back and I only have less then 12 inches between the door and the front of the car :eek2:

...I once owned an F6 / wh-int / blk wing Daytona...440 4-spd, 10 k original mile car...all my friends called it "Monkey Puke Green"...I didn't like it then, like it better now...anxious to see it finished

Nice, but this seems like step backwards, you just sold a green 70, which all you needed was a wing, a nose and a window plug, now you need a 70 front end, and a restoration  still cool though  :popcrn:

I am sharing shop space with dad (he will be 75 years old this summer)
His project toy  ;)
30 Chrysler rumble seat 6 wheeler coupe
It was someones 1/2 built project when dad got it
At one time there was a 426 hemi in it but the guy needed cash so sold the motor out of it
The car also had a Volarie front suspension in it but it did not work very well to get the rad and front corners of the fenders to clear all the parts
So that got pulled out and a rod shop Mustang II set up is in it now
We have had this 366 GMC truck motor around for years  (all balanced and blue printed) looking for a home so he put it in the coupe
Auto 4 spd with over drive
Car still has a brand new Dana in it with 411 gears (car is stupid fast around the yard)

The car has a vinyl top that I was told the dealership added
The seams are wider apart than a regular Charger roof and come down the back corners where the roof starts to curve and not where it is straight across the back window
The chrome J trim does not look like the factory stuff
Car is nice in the bottom glass corners

Only rust I can find under the vinyl is seen in the picture right along the very back edge along

Did a little work on the car today
Finally got all 4 wheels off the car and matched set of 4 that hold air on the car
Turns out 3 of the wheels have right hand threads and only one (drivers back) is left hand thread
Back wheels came off fine but had to use the blow torch to warm things up to get the front apart

So for my next project I want to get the car running off the key

Does anyone have a good wiring schematic for the 69 that I could print off and take to the shop with me as I will have some sorting out to do of the wires

As for the Daytona master plan

Car will first drive around like a 69 Charger (on the road legal)

Then will come the wing that I have but I still need the stuff for in the trunk
Then the rear window and trunk lid mod
Then the nose

Stuff I have
Wing
Trunk lid to cut down (I have been saving one for years that looks like it was on a car left open and rotted out on the edge closest to car back window)
73 Charger filler panel (trunk lid to back window)
70 Charger hood

I also have a complete 68 Coronet grill that I am thinking about putting on the car (like the 500) till I take the last leap and change the nose when I have indoor garage space sorted out

Stuff I need

Wing washers
Inside trunk braces (home made if I can find some good pictures and dimensions)
Daytona trunk lid hinges
Trunk lid cap
Vega hatch (I have a local guy looking for one for me)
70 Charger fenders
Fender scoops
All the stuff for the nose

Feel free to point out anything I may have missed

Make sure you check inside, under those panels from the interior trunk side.. That's where a large majority of the rust starts since it was never coated in a primer since the dipping process didn't get that high...

Time seems to be one of my biggest problems and finding enough of it to do what I want on this car

Well I got the 400 to run off the key from the driver seat
The car has a manual choke set up (had to replace the old one as the cable was all seized up)
Motor is not very happy from its long sleep as it is doing a lot of back firing up through the carb
I think the valves are sticking
So now there is more stuff to come apart

My car is a 383 car and I have a 383 that is all torn apart (apart when I got it so who knows where all the bolts are)
I priced out a rebuild kit cough cough cough
The Canada US exchange rate has not been kind to us up here looking for new parts
Well maybe rebuilding the 383 at this time is not a good plan either

So snooping through the local classifieds on line (kijiji) I found a solution for the time being

I bought this car for less than the 383 rebuild kit was going to cost me

1971 Newport with the original 383 still in it
I looked at this car in the fall in the back parking lot at a Dodge dealership as all car guys do when you see something  :2thumbs:
It was one of the mechanics cars as he had no room at home
So when I saw it listed I knew I had seen it before and knew where it was sitting

Went to see it and hear it run
Ran like a top
So we came to a deal and he drove it 50 km to my house yesterday

Hope to have the 400 out of the Charger by the weekend then pull the 383 out put new frost plugs and maybe timing chain then back in the Charger

Well got the old tired motor out and the Newport 383 in the car
Just a couple more things to hook up to get it running and moving around on its own power again

That stupid wing on the back of the car
I think I have lost count how many times getting something out of the trunk and then standing up under the wing  :brickwall:
You thought hitting your head on the hood latch was no fun now I get it at both ends of the car
Title: Re: Some day it will be a green F6 Daytona clone
Post by: 70 sublime on April 21, 2016, 07:14:12 PM
Made the first trip around the yard on its own power  :2thumbs:

Car is just running off a gallon can of gas under the hood
Need to flush out the old gas tank before I hook it up (sounds 1/2 full of 25 year old gas and smells stale)

Now that it has some go it will be nice if it had some stop so will be working on the brakes and all the rubber bits in the front end next

Well a few updates since my last post
Moving along very slowly unfortunately but still moving along
Have been using photo bucket makes pictures easier to post now  :2thumbs:
Stupid photo bucket now I am slowly going back and re doing my missing pictures

Some stuff on how I located the holes for my wing
Think it says 7/8 under the pen ( 5/8 + 1/4 ) was not trying to hide anything just where the pen was sitting when I took picture  ;)

So 3" from back edge of quarter panel + or - 1/4" and 2 1/8" from inside edge trunk hole opening
Title: Re: Some day it will be a green F6 Daytona clone
Post by: 70 sublime on March 03, 2017, 09:46:21 AM
I put down some tape 3" up from the back of the quarter panel (not the end cap) and 2 1/8 from the side to start with
I made a template for both sides of the base of the wing
I set the wing on the car with all 3 sections bolted together with no studs installed in the bottom
Then I used a marker to trace the shape onto the car with the wing just touching the tape
Lifted the wing off and placed the templates on the car to see where to drill holes

Think the main space to check is to see how close the trunk lid comes to top of wing when opening it  :2thumbs:

Trunk floor had a couple soft spots in it so was just going to patch them
Got to thinking if I ever get the back window changed it will make it ten times harder to put a new floor in so I am changing the floor for a new one now that I have some room to work

So this is pretty much where I am at right now
The center floor is all out from behind the rear end hump
Left the trunk extensions as they are good
Have to weld in a small piece on each side of the car on the inner fender right at floor level
Clean up all the frame rails and set new 2 piece pan in and mark where I have to drill some holes to mig weld through

Since marking the holes for the wing I have recently rounded up a pair of fiberglass wing washers and a fiberglass trunk lid end cap ( never knew it had that much of a curve to it )

Making a little head way
Had to weld a small piece on the bottom edge of the inner fender just right at trunk floor level
Box is full of the old trunk floor  ;)

Got another piece of the puzzle rounded up this weekend with the help of Baldwinvette77
He wanted a trunk lid I had and I wanted a hatch so I told him help me find a hatch and a week later I have one  :2thumbs:
He also said he will now give me grief for having GM parts on my car ( I have now seen his car and he already has GM parts on his so I think I am safe)

A couple weeks ago I also rounded up a set of fiberglass wing washers and a trunk lid cap

Q5 has been in the back of my mind just because that is what this car started out with for colour
It might look sweet but I fear I would more happy with it if it was F6  :2thumbs:
Right now I am 25% Q5 and 75% F6

I like the F6 green a lot.
But, if it were mine
Q5 would win that argument every time . the fact its originally that color only adds to it

The OP can't go wrong with either choice, the Q5 is a sweet color though if one was leaning towards a "blue"
Title: Re: Some day it will be a green F6 Daytona clone

Yes Q5 is a tempting colour
So say I did build it Q5 I think I would still have a feeling something for me was missing
So then I would find another car and start again just to build it F6
So what happens if my starting car is a factory red car or factory black car ?
I would be right back not getting my green car built again  :brickwall:

Think I am going to stick with F6
If someday I come across a more interesting Charger and let this one go the new owner can make the choice to go Q5 if they want  :2thumbs:

Well got bogged down a little on this project

Driver front wheel has ( had) a bit of a lean to it so I have been changing all the bushings in the front suspension hoping to fix it
Nope
Saving the best ( or worst) till last I was ready to change the bushing in the lower control arm
Got everything apart to get the arm out and something did not look right
It seems the crush sleeve that is welded into the K frame that the lower control arm pivots on is no longer welded in  :brickwall:

Was not really an option to try and weld it back together while still in the car as the K frame was full of oil and grease and a mouse nest
Maybe a car fire would have solved my problem .......
Maybe not

So now everything needs to come out
Title: Re: Some day it will be a green F6 Daytona clone
Post by: 70 sublime on September 15, 2017, 09:36:03 PM
I came up with a plan of trying to drop just the K frame and leave to motor where it was

So found some 6X6 blocks and set them on the inner fenders with a plank and a 2x2 metal tubing above the motor to hold a chain

Got a chain around under the crank at the front and tightened it up by wedging another board under the 2x2 tube and taping it over to the center with a hammer
Pulled the 2 motor mount bolts out and motor was free
Title: Re: Some day it will be a green F6 Daytona clone
Post by: 70 sublime on September 15, 2017, 09:43:15 PM
Looking at the steering I decided to just take the three bolts out of the steering box and just leave it in the car
So I did not have to get that stupid roll pin out to pull steering column ;)

I just tied the steering box up to the engine support brace also with some baling string ( we got lots of that stuff here on the farm )

After getting the K frame out and looking at the good frame I could see how big the hole really was

And looking at passenger side it looks like someone had already done some fixing on that side as it seems there is a very thick washer welded on the outside
Glad i did not try to fix it in the car after all

It took me about a week of spare time here and there to get it apart but I figure about 4 hours of steady work
Should go back together in less time now that the recipe is all figured out on what to do

That is after I change the bushing in the passenger side control arm since it is already out and sitting on the floor

Seems every time I am almost ready to do something on the car something else needs the shop space for a period of time
There has been 2 swap on the winter snow tires
One brake job
And the last one we had to rebuild a set of planetary gears in the front axle of our 4 wd farm loader tractor ( just drove it out of the shop today )

Last month I changed my house furnace from oil to propane so we are putting my old oil furnace in the shop right now
Got a bunch of junk to move out to make some room while the car is still out

Think I have started and moved my car around ( which is a good thing ) more in the last month than in the last year
Getting closer to working on it again but with Christmas coming I can not see much happening on it before January then I should be back at it full time in my spare time

Getting stuff done in Canada just sucks some years.. I hope to get on my car by Christmas, but it's not looking good living here on the edge of Georgian Bay!

Cripes that looks BAD!

One inch of snow here and I stay in bed watching the Ashes (that's cricket).
Quite a sensible pastime until the ball hits you on the head at 90mph and you die...oops...

F6 thats YUMMEE!

Maybe a white stripe for me though? :2thumbs:

It has been a while since I have had time or really wanted to tinker on the car
Warmer weather is helping get the bug back
Finishing up a few things in the trunk area and then get an even coat of primer on everything so I can get some colour on it
Think it will be easier to paint some colour on the places farther up in the trunk before I change the back window plug and make the trunk opening even smaller

Going to get the bottom side ready for some colour also before I get the gas tank mounted

Anyone know the best way to get the crude out of the filler pipe ?
When I took the tank off the car it still had gas in it and the pipe has crude just in the bottom 6 inches

Oh yes I also spent some money on the pointy front parts for my car  :2thumbs:

I spoke with Don on the phone today

http://www.dodgecharger.com/forum/index.php/topic,131821.0.html

I am getting a nose cone , head light doors and buckets , Z braces and the two metal C channels that mount on the car frame rail bumper bolts

Couple weeks to finish up the parts and another week for shipping

My list is getting shorter
Still need grill and frame
Lower valance
Make a plate to tie C channels and Z braces and lower valance to lower cone together
Latch tray
Direction signal lights
Assorted gasket air seals
Something to make head lights open and shut

Before I get any more parts I need to stock up on my fun money cause there is not much left right now  :icon_smile_tongue:

Happy with the parts
I have never had much to do with fiberglass before but this is a lot stiffer than I was expecting it to be

So my list of bits I need is getting shorter

Still need the buckets to go around head lights in the nose cone
Need the hinge part the doors pivot on
Need lower valance
Need latch tray
Not 100 % sure about using the fender seal gasket set up or might try to move the nose cone closer to the fenders and live with out them

I got the Z brackets just not pictured

I don't see the 2 ribs in the lower part of the nose cone for the Z-brackets to attach to.....

or am I thinking of something else??

i think mike had recently mentioned that only he and janak were adding them, to the best of his knowledge.

it was the first thing i looked for, too

The last picture I posted has some metal parts nailed to the inside of my crate

Don made the mounting ribs but did not get them attached yet to the nose cone
I also got a set of the brackets with the proper step in them that go on the car's frame bumper mounts that the lower edge of the Z brackets mount to

Well I have made a little progress

I made some rubber gaskets from a sheet of rubber for a pond liner for between the wing and 1/4 panel

Taped my cardboard pattern down where the 4 holes for each brace to go
I had already made one hole on each side to test fit the wing

Said o well and drilled holes in the top of my 1/4

Finally mounted the wing back on my car

I have wing washers ( fiberglass) but still have to make up the trunk braces

It was funny as after each hole I drilled all I could see is a green glow from the green paint inside the trunk  :2thumbs:
