Well it's been a long haul, and still have a lot to do. I'm about ready to put it on the rotisserie so I can get to the roof and the lower half of the window plug. But what will be in the spring. Winter is coming and it's time to build me another nose cone (not happy with what I've built so fare) maybe this time next year if the gods willing it will be in paint!!!! WINGMAN (JR) has had a big hand in this build as well as a inspiration!!!!!!

Wow.  I'm not going to call anyone's metalwork flawed because its a skill I don't have but I do think I see differences in what various people can do and that nosecone looks to me to be one finely crafted piece.

I didn't like the first nose cone that I made, so that one is gone (I cut it up). If I don't like it I will not pass it on, I'm funny that way. The second one I made I'm not all that happy with either so that one is hanging on the wall. I'm going to make another and see how this one turns out. I'm making for myself right now, I don't know if I'll make any to sale, to early to tell.

So, here is where we stand as of today. The nose cone fits well, The next step is to put it on the spit, so I can work on the roof and the window plug. O' the joys of taking it a part again.  :rotz:

Well I have some updates of what I have done to date. Little things, but that much less to do.

The first thing was blasting the dash frame and getting it painted, along with redoing the instrument cluster. Second was the brake assembly, and wiper transmission. And last was the heater box assembly.

Good afternoon folks,

Well, I though I was going to have a easy morning just installing the rear bumper. But No. That would be to much to ask for with reproduction parts. The biggest problem was the bumperettes, as you can see in the first picture. Picture two was the fix, and the last. I managed to get things worked out.

Good morning all,
I ended up having some shink back issues on the roof that wouldn't sand out, so I striped down the roof (vinyl top car) and didn't like what I seen. So I replaced the roof skin  (I should have done this in the first place) :brickwall:
Oh' well live and learn. I did find some more rust hiding under the roof, got that fixed, and used POR-15 and now all is good. I'll post some pics later.

Well that kind of blows Curt, but hey shit happens, fortunately your car is black, so a repaint of the roof should match well, FWIW I would avoid trying to blend a paint line at the C pillar, instead I would backtape along the top of the rear qtr's top edge, and hard tape the stripe edge, and tape off the front black painted portion of the decklid in front of the stripe, then reshoot the roof/plug/dutchman area along with the tops of the qtrs, then the only "line blending" would be the soft backtaped edge on the qtrs top line, actually you could blend it by hand polishing, just a thought...

I would repaint the area inside the pink line

Mike

Post by: DAY CLONA on November 11, 2017, 11:17:42 AM
Then you'd only have to blend in this backtaped soft edge on the qtrs hard edge body line, much easier than achieving a blend at the C pillars

That is the plan at this time, But I will extend it to the base of the A-pillars as I removed all the seam sealer and I'll also be removing the quarter stripes as one is not centered(not by my hand) this way I can go down the hole top edge the quarter as you stated.

Thanks for the insight  :2thumbs:

Good day folks,

After getting the roof skin installed, I though that I'd better check to make sure the rear glass still fits, and accurse not. The window was to tight, so I decided to cut out the upper half and start over. This time I fitted all the pieces and now everything fits, with the exception of the trim which is a little tight, but I have a fix in the works... Thanks to moparchris!!

Thank you sir,
I used the AMD trim set, It was a little tight at the along the lower corners so I made a relief cut and tapped them out a bit.

Curt, you are making great progress considering that you had to redo the roof and part of the window plug after the car was painted!  I'm sure that it was a tough decision to dig back into it,but the longevity you will gain by doing this will definitely pay off. I  bought this Daytona stock car clone that I  am building, and I have been undoing the hack job that was done to the body, by someone who was trying to turn it into a Fast and Furious Daytona wannabe. They butchered the hood, doors, fenders and the rear window plug.  The plug was a very nice piece made by Mike at Dayclona, but a previous owner hacked it trying to make the glass flush.  They distorted it badly, and it will have to be replaced.  At least the car was not painted yet. I have a friend that is going to make a new window plug for it. The shop that built my car did amazing work, but one of the owners hacked the body badly.  I am sure that it was a tough decision to redo the roof of your car,but it looks great, and you will always be glad that you did what had to be done.

Seems like these old cars require the 'two steps forward...one step backward' philosophy in order to get them done correctly with the parts available today. Great job on the repair!  :2thumbs:

....nice.....but I think I would want the drums and wing to match or be very different colours to each other ....especially where they are red and orange. To the unknowing onlooker they are going to think it just a paint mismatch!! Im just too anal I guess!!

It wasn't to hard of a decision, just had to make it right. My car was a vinyl top car and if I had a half a brain I should have replaced the roof skin then. But as they say hindsight is 20/20.

Good day all,

Here is some pics after the final buffing was done. I'm getting ready to install the headliner. I have a question about this topic, on a Daytona/500 do you use the two short bows? On my C500 the two short bows are not in use, the headliner has been replaced some time in its life. Any guidance on this matter would be great. Thanks

And,

I've got the headliner laying out on the roof of the C500, it's from Legendary. It does not have the lasting pockets for the two short bows. I used this 3M strip-calk as a water barrier on the speed nuts for the charger scrip install. And lastly the cardboard inserts.

Good day Mike,

I did a comparison this morning, my C500 has it's original package tray. What I came up with, the measurements are pretty much spot on. The ECS tray measured across (front 55 1/4",center 44 3/4", and rear 44").  It fits really well in my car. Hope that helps.

Good day folks,

I have the AMD rear window and AMD outer window trim installed, and it fits well. Unfortunately I did get a couple of small paint chips :brickwall:. It should be a easy fix. The one thing that I have issues with is the rear inside window trim fitment. I ordered a set from classic industries, the new set where it slides over the headliner and the teeth, the gap is further apart than the original trim. So it's a very loose fit and is a 1/16" taller as well. I do have a older set from year one and the gap is spot on as is the height.

  And the saga continues.....

Just a couple of updates nothing major. I've have the lock cylinders and keys refurbished as a complete set now, I have all the door latches and stickers and rods installed with the new door seals. Doors open quiet well. Also started installing some of the factory labeling, the under dash harness, and the tail light harness. The picture is of what is left yet to install. I do still need to order a few others that I've missed.

Not a lot done, but I have the quarter stripes installed. The wing is centered with a 3/16" gap.

Sorry Pal, that's just not acceptable...perfection isn't allowed on wingcars :nana: :icon_smile_big:

Good score on the wing Curt. I paid a grand for the original wing I bought back in the early nineties.  The engine builder has had my Hemi since Christmas, and hasn't started on it yet.

I've still have a long way to go yet before in can post some full car pictures. I like the color comb is well, the only thing that would really make it pop is having red interior. I went black because I had most of the pieces already, so I managed to save a little pit of coin.

Good morning,
I'll measure it against the regular track. I also was concerned about that very question after refurbishing the seats. You difinitly set higher up with new seat foam.

After doing some checking, the 6-way at it's lowest point is the same height as the regular seat track.
The measurements I came up with (just using the door side track) the front is 4-3/4" and the rear 3-3/4".
Hope this helps. I don't know what the difference's between a 69' 6-way seat track versus a 70' 6-way seat track is besides the way in mounts up.

Good day folks,

Here are a few more pictures from today.
Working on the front suspension today and have that mostly competed, with the exception on the shocks.
I bought these quite a while back, so this is my own fault. Was not smart enough to check the shocks when I received them, who though that you needed to right?
So I was going to install them today and much to my surprise they are not the same...  The part number's was on the packaging...
Look at the last picture and you'll see the difference, the one on the right is the correct one, the other who knows.

Good day folks,

Here is a small update, with the engine installed and fluids topped off I proceeded to light it off.
And much to my surprise I had power in the run position and nothing on the start position of the switch. After a bit of winding my a$$ and scratching my watch, I found the problem.
This was a new ignition switch and it was broken on the inside (aftermarket) so I got and old switch from (wingman) and made what I needed. And in the last picture the tach is working!!!

With great excitement I have read your updates for a 1/2 dozen years. Your patience is beyond belief and exceeded by your desire for perfection. If Creative Industries had done this level of work they would have never made enough Daytona's to meet the NASCAR requirements and the restoration market would have nothing to sell to us! You sir are to be commended and honored. Thank you for the ride. When you are ready to take it out on the road I would love to come to Kansas to ride along (but behind) to see it in action. I think the Kansas mafia owes you in particular and us all a car show at a weekend in say mid-October for you to debut the car to the national, dare I say, world-wide acclaim. Congratulations for a job above and beyond and thanks for the pictures and progress as you near the end of the journey!

So are you thinking what will be next? A Turbine car clone would be nice  ;)

Bob,
All I can say is thank you very much for the kind words, and it would be my honor to meet you and do a ride along with you and the Kansas mafia sometime in the future. I still have a long way to go yet. I've been reworking my hood. I don't like the way it turned out from the body shop among some other things.

Good day folks,

Here's another small update,
After getting the ignition switch straighten out and the car running, I noticed that the temp, and fuel gauge wasn't working. It has all new OER gauges, circuit board, and voltage limiter.
So, I made a tester (C-3826) that the service manual calls to test all the gauges while still in the vehicle. It's crud, but hey it works. I found out that all my sending units were bad, and all my gauges are good!!! Was not looking forward to pulling the cluster out. You can see the fuel gauge being tested.

Good day folks,

It's been a while, Been busy doing other things
In the last picture you'll see a set screw for the cross shaft, this allows you to adjust your omhs alone with the tabs. I had the set screw to tight to where it would not let the float arm travel freely.
That's all I have for now.

Good day folks

Well I finally have my other task completed (my wife's harley) now I can get back on the Daytona  :2thumbs:
I made a adapter for my motorcycle lift so I can assemble and install the nose cone by myself.
Enjoy

Good day folks,

Well I assembled the nose to check for fit, and things are looking pretty good. Just need to give it a bath and then get it ready for a repaint. Not happy with the finish...

Good day folks,

It's been a while, but this is the latest...

I painted the underside of the hood and noticed something wasn't right about the shade of black. The paint chip is body color, and the picture tells the rest. So round two I had the chip matched and it's a lot better now!

last two pictures look good  :2thumbs:

seen something like that before with the milky grayish shade of black, looks  kind of similar to using a black tinter ( depending on what paint manufacturer  ) straight off the mixing scheme , & using that !  with out actually mixing the correct paint formula black. side note people think black is black but there hundreds if not thousands of black automotive paint formulas ,  do 4 spary outs  from 4 different  car manufactures black paint codes ,  line them up together one might look   a bluish black  one an orangy / brownish black   nother a grayish black , &  one might look really black  a  black black color :P  ,  but separate all the sprayouts  they all look black black  ;) more often than not straight solid black will have three or 4  more different color tinters in the mix as well as the black tinter .

I was amazed at the many shades of black that's out there. The color that matched the chip has 3 tints in it if I remember correctly.

Wow that 2nd pic is interesting. You painted half of the hood then snapped the pic? It looks like it was buffed. Are you using single stage paint?

What color is it?

Good day sir,
I painted the top side of the hood in base clear. I took that  picture when it was halfway done with the buffing

What color is it?

It's black

Good day folks,

I managed to get a little more done.

I had to order a set of buckets and rings to to finish up the headlight doors. This is the set that classic offers, I'm not impressed with this set and rings (made in China)
You can see in the second picture it's missing the hole for the spring. I drilled a 1/8" hole.

I'm really bummed the wheels I was looking to get are no longer being built.
I should have ordered them months ago.

I'm glad to see your driving your Daytona.
One must enjoy their car!

My uncle has some really unique vehicles. He was always afraid of driving them because "something might happen to them".
His friend, he has known for over 70 years, Frank Currie, who started Currie Enterprises, told me "Your uncle is nuts! Cars are meant to be driven. If something happens to it... fix it!"
Frank enjoyed his vehicles. He passed away a few years ago. My uncle is 93 and doesn't drive anymore.

I plan on driving this car every chance I get, and I really have enjoyed it so far. I've noticed it has turned a lot of heads. I'm working out the bugs right now, I have a couple of leaks that needs looking into, and I want to be able to drive it to next year's HPAC meet in October if God is willing.

Just my opinion: I believe cars are meant to be driven

I wanted to go with A4 silver originally, but there was one that color somewhat local to me. There isn't any black Daytona's that are local so that was the color of choice.
As far as the nose cone, it's on the car, and the jack is not for sale. I may need it again.

Good day folks,

I have a little more accomplished. The regular bumper jack you see is from Tony's mopar parts. It's a very nice piece. The standard jack handle I bought somewhere else.

The scissor jack, handle, and plate I bought quite a few years ago from a board member.

It was also fun installing the spare tire   :-\ not...

Also, does anyone know where I can find this sticker? In the last picture

Thank you very much Mike, it's been a long journey thus far and still have a ways to go yet.

Good day folks,

Just ran across this the other day, I was going through my owner's manual and noticed " This card supersedes the charts on page 25 of your owner's manual"

The first picture is of the insert card, and of an original owner's manual.

And in the second picture is of a reproduction of this manual, and it shows the updates.

Bit of some advice, I did the hood pin cables just like you, they are factory, but  after a couple of runs down the highway they do scratch the the paint, I shorten mine so no "flabbing" on the hood. P.S. your car looks awesome by the way.

Good day folk's

Here's another little update.

I now have the head lights adjusted. I used this Hopkin's (Hoppy) headlamp service center.
In the third picture is calculating the floor slop.
The fifth and seventh pictures are showing the vertical adjustment (the green level)
And the sixth and eighth pictures are of the horizontal adjustment (inside the little widows) lining up the lines

Thank you Mike,

Yes, it's been a long road filled with pot holes and some days it felt like it would never get done. With patience and perseverance and folks like you and Brian (Charger-Bodie) and a host of others on this website, one may accomplish anything!!

Curt

P.S. The only way it will leave is if someone offers stupid money, really stupid money. In that case I'll buy you a beer!!!

To this day I still kick myself for not buying Larrys X9 Charger R/T converted to a Daytona clone.
I was $5k short so I bought his '71 'cuda.  Ive had a lot of cars over the years but I really miss that 'cuda and not borrowing money for the Daytona.
Larrys the type you can buy from sight unseen.

Your rig looks absolutely fabulous man!  Wanna trade, lol?

Yes we had like 3 weeks notice to throw a show together , not a lot of time .  I hoped for more cars ( especially local cars)  but with such little time it was decent .

My Mom was here staying with me for a month otherwise I would have made the trek June 4th.

Tell you what.  I don't remember this heat, lol.  Two weeks of 100 plus forecasted, smh.
I can deal with it, it's my service partner Golden Retriever I worry about.
Most shows are on Saturdays Ive noticed too.  Up in the nw, it was Sundays mostly & Saturdays.  I can't do both days like I used to.

What Im noticing is shows are up to around first of June and mostly after July.
Opposite of up there too, lol.  Up there the rain doesn't stop until July 5th, like clockwork.

Theres one up in Nebraska I was thinking about heading to this Saturday.  I just need to get my foot back in the door to learn which shows are worth the hassle, lol.

Thanks buddy!

Sorry Mr. Pan for straying your thread.
I was always a Shovel dude like keepat until I got hurt and got outta putts.  My first year '77 AMF 3900 original mile FXLR (mom bought it for dad) went to a Japan dealer and pretty sure was lost during tsunami.

Anyhoots.  Just sealed envelope for pre registering the HPAC show October 1st show in kc.

I drove close to 500 miles round trip to shows up on the Canadian border when I lived in the nw with various rides.
Just not in 100° weather, lol.

If you right side Kansas folks know of someone coming from the left side please let me know.  I always feel more confident traveling in a group.

Anxious to meet Stu and the rest of you!

If I can find someone to ride shotgun, I'll do the Nebraska to kc cruise.

Ive put less than 1k miles on everything being new with the purple car.  I should be ok?...famous last words, ha!

Bo.  The pleasure was all mine.
You're BY FAR the best metal man I've come across.
My Pontiac buddy even mentioned how much he learned from you!!!

We talked about you mostly on our trek back west but he was carrying on how he (as well as I) wished he/we could do work like u & mark, 70 rr vert.

Had to be one of my favorite in about 36 years of shows.  Good times.  Thanks buddy, we'll be in touch.
