Title: 2007 Monster Mopar Weekend - Aero Car Gathering Details
Post by: hemigeno on August 01, 2007, 05:57:05 PM
Hey everyone,

The annual Wing Car "gathering" at the Monster Mopar Weekend (MMW) show is coming up soon.  For those who are wondering what the dates are, the show is normally held on the weekend after Labor Day – which this year will be September 7-9.

Rich Bolzenius has lined up Harry Lee Hyde, Jr. to be on hand for questions & autographs the entire weekend.  Mr. Hyde was a crew member on the #71 K&K Insurance Dodge driven by Bobby Isaac to the 1970 NASCAR Grand National championship.

As is normally the case, a bunch of Aero/Wing Car people are meeting at Rich's house in Union, MO on that Friday (September 7th).  That is our chance to quiz Mr. Hyde in a more informal setting, without all the distractions of the car show to worry about.  We will also try to do a videotaped interview again, although that may be subject to whether either of the Liebrandt's can attend (Danny:  hint, hint!).  Most years there are also a few former St. Louis Assembly Plant workers who stop by Rich's shop for a visit, to regale us with stories that make me wonder how any of these cars ever left the factory in one piece!  As much fun as the MMW show is, I will readily admit that Rich's event-before-the-event is often my favorite part of the whole weekend.

The car show portion itself will be about the same as last year.  We have arranged with the promoter of the MMW to reserve 20 show spaces specifically for the Aero cars, and I plan to stake them out in the same area we've had recently - just past the Registration Tent.  If possible, we would like to have all of the Wing Cars parked in a row in this area.  It's not required that everyone park together, but it sure looks great to have all the Daytonas and Superbirds lined up!

The Registration and entry process for the Wing Cars will be a little different than in years past.  As it stands right now, we won't be doing any group entry through the side gates.  For those who want to avoid having to stop at the Registration tent on Saturday, by far the best way to do that will be to Register on Friday night.  Just to be clear, Registering a car is different than Pre-registering.  Pre-registration is basically just Pre-paying for the event.  It is still worthwhile to Pre-register (prepay) for the event, since that keeps you from having to shell out cash at the show, and it also gives you an extra ticket for entry to the Show.  Registering (whether prepaid or not) needs to be done only ONCE the whole weekend, so if you do that on Friday night when there are usually no lines, there is no need to do it again on Saturday morning -- when most people go through Registration.  If there was a large enough group of people who officially Registered at the tent on Friday, we could still arrange for entry through the side gate.  However, there is really not much of a need for that since the "already Registered" line flows right through the tunnel and allows people to drive directly to their parking space without stopping at the Tent.  That's why we're ending the festivities at Rich's by 4pm, which should allow plenty of time to get to Gateway prior to the Registration Tent's closing time of 6pm.

I have also confirmed with the Gateway's Management Staff that we will be able to get the Aero cars out on the oval track to do laps.  There are a few changes to the format over last year:
>>   Like last year, only Aero cars will be doing the laps.  In our estimation, that means 1969 Charger 500s, '69 Daytonas and '70 Superbirds.  Clones of these cars are allowed.  (Since I can't push my engine-less Daytona very fast, I won't be doing any laps myself this year.)
>>   Second, the laps will be "Parade Laps" by order of Gateway International's parent company.  They got a little excited after last year's laps when one car encountered a mechanical problem that could have proven disastrous.  As a result, they are limiting us to Parade Lap speeds (although no one defined what speed that would be).  Last year, the Parade Lap speed was between 45 and 50 mph but I have not been able to confirm what speed we will be able to go.  This is still a treat to be able to get the Aero cars out on the track.
>>   Third, (like last year) the MMW promoter has stipulated that the track laps be open to any MonsterMoparWeekend participant with an Aero car.  There is no club membership requirement in order to participate.
>>   Fourth, with the change to "Parade Laps", both the track and the Monster Mopar Show Car Staff are allowing us to get on the track both Saturday AND Sunday.  Saturday's laps will start at 3:30pm (line-up 15 minutes prior), and Sunday's laps will start at 11:00am (again, line-up 15 minutes prior).
>>   Finally... Like last year, there will be a mandatory driver's meeting shortly before the cars go out on the track.  I will try and make it around to all the Aero car owners on Saturday with some printed instructions about the track's procedures.  We will line all the participating cars on the track's inner road course, near the oval track's Turn One (this is near the entrance to the Swap Meet).

Hopefully those who can make it will come.  This is probably the largest annual event for Aero cars, and is normally eclipsed in numbers only by the Talladega Reunion hosted every 5 years by Tim Wellborn & DSAC.  There is no need to register with me or Rich ahead of time, we just hope that everyone comes and has a good time.  It's one of the highlights of the year for me to meet with this many Aero car owners & aficionados at the same place.

If you have any questions about the Aero-related events we have planned, please do not hesitate to contact me.  My email address is genlewis@fidnet.com, or you can call me at my office (636) 583-8811.  Hope to see you there!!

Count me in for the show. I'm driving the 500 over once again, and my neighbor has already said that he is going to cruise over with me this year in his 67 Baracuda, or as my 3 year old says "Bacaruda". At least he knows what a 500 and a Daytona and a Superbird are though. So he has the main ones down to a T already.

As far as being there for Friday, well of course you can count on that. As long as I feel sick on that Friday, as I've used all my vacation time already, but still have 5 sick days. I think I feel a cough coming on that will set in really good come that weekend.

I too have guard that weekend but I had called them and said I would be out of state and will have to make it up.  I have gotten with Dane and he has shipped me one of his extruded wings that I will be bringing to the show. My car is not finished either so I am on foot for the weekend.

What your interested in a Superbird or a daytona? Not I.

A Daytona or nothing. That is my opinion, not worth much but its mine. I'd rather keep my C500 than have a Bird. call me crazy but thats me.

Well, that's why I'm looking to trade off the '68 for a winged car.. I would NEVER get rid of Dana for a Superbird.. Only a Daytona.  We definitely are on the same page.....

In reference to the hotel question, the Collinsville Holiday Inn has a MMW price of $88 or so, including breakfast.  There was a decent gathering of guys there in 2005.  The normal price is about $144.  There will be some non-aero car guys there (like me until my project is done), so there might be too many Chargers in the lot to suit some folks.
About the extruded wing...I hope to see that for future reference.  See ya there.

Just booked a room at the Best Western across the interstate from the Holiday Inn. We'll leave the hotrods home and drive the Daytona. As in... Daytona Truck. This way we can get into the infield as a non-judged participant and be close to the swap meet. Kind of nice to have our own food and drink as well as seating and shelter.  Don't have to carry those swap meet purchases as far either.
Can't wait to see the wing cars again. I really thought that we would have a cloner ready for this years show. Should be ready by this time next year though. May even have Howie's car ready as well.
See ya there.

Thanks, Troy.  At least it's cool weather, can't say much about it being dry though  :'(

I had the opportunity to meet Harry Lee Hyde, Jr. yesterday, as he was already telling stories at Rich's house last night.  DC.com member xs29j8Bullitt (Allen) and I went to Gateway to stake out the parking spaces, and afterwards we stopped by Rich's place.  I wish I could have stayed a lot longer since they were just getting ready to eat some BBQ fresh off the grille when I left.  Got home to a cold bowl of instant oatmeal   :brickwall:  Wonder if my wife was trying to tell me something?  At least Allen got to enjoy the stories and the food!

It should be a great weekend, no matter what the weather does.  Hopefully I'll see some of you guys around this weekend.

For those who couldn't make it to the event, it turned out nice enough despite the threat of rain throughout Saturday.  We did get the track laps in both days, with 10 cars participating on Saturday and 13 on Sunday.  I know I have a penchant for Aero cars to begin with, but it is just downright cool to see these cars out on the track and "in their element".  Thank you to those folks who were able to participate, whether or not you had an Aero car - as usual I met a bunch of folks from various forums and came home wishing I'd have had more time to spend chatting with everyone.

There was a fella that recently retired from Chrysler that was taking professional-quality pictures of the cars out on the track - some of which are going to be used in an upcoming newsletter/magazine article (not sure where).  I spoke with him on Sunday after the show was over, and he promised to mail me a DVD of the 100+/- pictures he took both Saturday and Sunday of the cars while they were out on the Track.  Saturday he was in the pace car, but on Sunday he took pictures from Pit Road as the cars came down the frontstretch.  More than a few of the pictures turned out awesome, according to the photographer.  He said we could use the pictures however we wanted to for free, but I was figuring it'd be better to pay him at least a little something for burning a bunch of discs for us.  There were shots of most (if not all) cars individually, plus many shots of the cars on the banking and "in formation".

Anyone else interested in getting a copy of these pictures besides me?   :scratchchin:

Your welcome for the ride there Allen. Heck I offered to let ya drive, so that I could hang out the window and take some photo's. Maybe next time.

You'll have to excuse me but I really don't recall the fellow's name who was in the back seat on Sunday. And I'm not talking about Troy, I know him.

Gene, it was an absolutely excellent weekend for me... well worth the long drive and the pesky rain we endured!  Many thanks to YOU,Troy, Rich, Danny, Brent, and the other Charger & Aero Car folks who I met and thoroughly enjoyed talking to!!!  It was also great to meet Harry Lee Hyde & Jim C. and see Scott S. & Dave H. again after all those years... amazingly, we had not aged at all!  :icon_smile_wink:

NO... I am not waiting another 25 years to attend another St Louis car show!  I am not sure about next year at this point due to the on-going conflict with a family reunion, but no more than two years... even if I get dis-owned by the family!

BTW, during the 12 hour drive back to Fort Worth... I did a lot of thinking about one of my aero cars... talked to a Paint & Body shop today... stay tuned... :icon_smile_tongue:

Your welcome for the ride there Allen. Heck I offered to let ya drive, so that I could hang out the window and take some photo's. Maybe next time.

You'll have to excuse me but I really don't recall the fellow's name who was in the back seat on Sunday. And I'm not talking about Troy, I know him.

Yes, you certainly did offer me the chance to drive your C500... but I was too concerned something could happen to it.  Like I said when you offered, I usually don't drive friend's cars or borrow equipment like trailers... Probably should have accepted your offer this time.  :scratchchin:

I think Scott L.'s friend was Chris ????  :shruggy:

You will probably be flooded now with offers to drive your car... who knows, maybe we will both have cars on the track in the next year (or two)...

The other Troy.... (The one not there) :'(

...more exactly, there's no talking sense into me... :P     my record is clear, I can never finish a project on time...  :brickwall:    time will tell if I go ahead and decide to give it a go in the next few weeks.

Start planning for next year now...  Dana deserves to be taken on the track!  :yesnod:

Maybe my family will dis-own me next year...

Hmmmmm,

So Allen which car are you thinking of doing first? By the looks of all the photo's you showed me the Bird looks like a pretty easy go of things, other than the front end. Was it missing the radiator core support? Or was that the other car?

I plan to have the Paint & Body shop look over the Superbird & C500... The Daytona will be a LOT more bigger project than I care to tackle at the moment, so it will be done later.  Mainly thinking abort doing the C500. :shruggy:

Get it done, so I can see it.  ;)

It will be a very nice looking ride once completed. But from the look of things you'd have to move a weeks worth of stuff just to get the car out.

Hey speaking of that car, did you find out which cars broadcast sheet it is that you have? I know it didn't go to Jerry's car that was there last weekend, but I'd check to see if it's another T5 car. Not too many of those around, and even less that are HEMI's.

Okay so I'll admit that I'd also love a peek at it for personal enjoyment as well, the car and the broadcast sheet that is. :)

Always up for learing more.

I emailed a photo that I already had on the computer of the T5 Hemi C500 Broadcast Sheet.  There is a bit of glare from the sheet protector, but it is mostly readable.  I will retake the picture without the protector and send it to you when I get a chance...

Troy, you'd be right under any other set of circumstances, but this had everything to do with the driver and nothing to do with the capabilities of the car.  It was sortof a location joke - you had to be there...

still very surprised that Dan even got the car out on the track and you will get a kick out of this.....

After being on the track he told us.....

about getting talked to about leaving to much space and how we were not driving legal out there by what the pace guy wanted. because.... you are suppose to leave one car length between each car for each 10 mph speed.  Like we were suppose to be driving law legal on a racetrack(sorry could not find a emoticon for roflmao)

Now,,,,You guy's should'nt be so critical of { OLD YELLOWER }  He did win the class in the car show, as he does year after year. Yellow gas tank and all. That yellow tank hanging out back, reminds me of a boar hog with his b!!!!!1 hanging out. And Ole Yellor scored 97 points on  score card,,that's 3 points from perfect.   Hey , Geno, maybe we should stop spending on resteration, and just copy thing's at home.  Hey Danny, How about a picture of that crumy old 2nt place car , that could only muster 90 points.

Cough cough cough.....

Jim that is why we have not bothered going in the judge classes at MM for years. learned a long time ago that they do not know and or judge cars for correctness there.  I started realizing this a long time ago when a group of judges approached our 69 Charger and One was telling the others that it was not a factory color, it is R4 and you could not have asked to get the color closer to the original because of the original paint showing under the windshield gasket when we replaced it.

Comment: MM is a lot of fun, I just think that their judging is lacking.  And it is much more fun to just go and visit and have a good time, being judged just takes a lot of the fun out of stuff, and I probably feel this way for doing this stuff for 15-20yrs.

Dan thinks his car is soooooo correct with the yellow gas tank etc......Just remember what his wing with all of the pits looked like.

I would so like for Dan to go to a really well judge mopar car show and find things out.

And he would like to know why he never would get best mopar at the car show we used to do.  It was because there were better cars there by the way.

Ok I really must get down off of my soap box about Dan's car and the judging at MM.

And just a note.... I am not this catty about everyones cars Dan just brings it out in me and if you know him you know why.

Hey, I like the car (it's better than my Daytona) and don't know the owner at all. I'd still rather see cars at a show than know about cars that are tucked away out of site. I'm even more impressed when the owner knows how to use the gas pedal. ;)

I seriously doubt any of my cars will ever be judged. I appreciate the effort that goes into a concourse car but I drive entirely too much and I have an aversion to cleaning my car every five minutes. :P I've put just over 2,400 miles on my Barracuda since Labor Day weekend. :drive:

Title: Re: 2007 Monster Mopar Weekend - Aero Car Gathering Details
Post by: Mopurr on September 18, 2007, 12:30:59 PM
Well....

The car was done at the same shop as Robert's and I think you know about how they screwed the inside of his nose up...Brent has tried to help get it back to normal but is impossible.

Robert went with some modifications for his car and has done more since then, Robert wanted the rough texture but body color underside of his car like a friend had on his RR because he was going to be driving it some and he also wanted the gas tank painted blue so Dan had the same thing done to his but the catch is Dan wants to play and thinks his car is VERY correct.

Robert started out with a very pitted wing saying that is how they came from Creative and Dan agreed with this and had his this way also Robert changed his after being at Talledega in 99 and after some 2000 car shows because he was given a hard time over it.  Dan had his this way and was spouting about correctness of it for quite some time.

So without going on & on about the Correct (incorrect) stuff on the yellow car.

The Yellow Daytona is a very pretty car, but the problem is  the owner and what he wants to protray the car to be.

This car was done at a body shop not a restoration shop, I am not slamming the shop but only commenting on what the owner implys about the car

I know Jim had a conversation with Dan about things he needed to correct at MM a few years ago and then watched Dan's car take 1st place.

If someone comments about something that is incorrect on our car if not known different we will research & verify with an open mind, but Dan is always right or will never admit otherwise

We won't go into stories about how Dan reacts when he does not win his class etc.

Yeah Jim I took quite a few photo's of that BEAUTIFUL 2nd place Winged car. I think it was a R4 red, 4 speed car, with black interior, and a black tail stripe. The only things I noticed on the 2nd place car that weren't right was the winshield washer bottle, and that the owner had the front hood bumpers on the car. Other than that it was gorgeous.  ;)

The Yellow car also had a painted black hood latch, to go along with his Yellow gas tank. He did however have the right windshield washer bottle though. Although there were about 15 other things under the hood that were overlooked obviously in the judging. Still I must admit its a much nicer car than the one I have.

Side note photo's shouldn't be 9.58mb to start with should they?

Gene, that last photo was for you. As you asked for a shot of the car with the wind sock in the back ground. I do have some of the full car with it as well, but I didn't notice as the time that Delma had the trunk open. Oops.

Actually I have never seen anyone come to a car show with Dan....he is always a loner.  Sometimes he comes over and stays around (if parked close by....never gets far from the car).   He has even been mad at us when we were at a local show parked 3 or 4 cars down...he was mad because everyone(several friends) was staying over at our tent visting instead of coming down to visit with him like it was so far away for him to walk over to the tent..... ::) Actually we were holding them prisoner  :icon_smile_wink: NOT! So the friend must have been someone that saw him hit the sign and was looking at the nose with him.....

I like joe and have never had a problem with him.    He's different,  but not a jerk like this yellow daytona guy sounds like .
Not sure if you had a bad experience with joe ?

HEY GENE, guess that answers the question of who ran over the sign, and how it got all bent up.

So did it do anything to his car? I will admit this about his Y2 car, its is a nice car. Nice in that I'd drive the heck out of it. Its good looking, and its a Daytona, its not perfect so therefore it should be driven like any car should. :)
