Title: Please help me figure out the correct seatbelts for my car
Post by: bull on January 02, 2006, 06:06:28 AM
I'm trying to figure out the correct seat belts my car is supposed to have. I'm told that some of the early '68 B-body Mopars (like mine) came with the chrome buckles like the '67s had rather than the colored, textured buckles you normally see in the 2nd gens. Can anyone verify or dispel this "fact" for me? I'm hoping a parts book will shed a little light on the subject or maybe someone with some experience in this area could help. Thanks.

I sold long time ago to dodgecharger_fan ( Dave ) 4 original Mopars parts dealers catalogs, from 67 to 70...in fact he was the first guy I dealed up there since I become on member of the old board. Maybe he could help you

Is the part number on the white tags? My Charger only has the two front belts and they don't look right. I'm wondering since mine is a Jan. '68 car if it had '67 belts like these:

Is a January '68 car considered an early car? I would have guessed with cars starting in August 1967 and ending in July 1968 that yours would be a mid year car. With the 3rd quarter date codes on those belts I wonder if they would have been installed that late.

My April built car has the textured type and I could check the dates on the belts to give you an idea for time frames but, that does do you much good. Sorry.

I don't know what date is considered early but my car has the early features such as the sliding ash tray and the Inland 4spd shifter instead of a Hurst so I'm thinking this is a good indication. Problem is, no one really knows which got what during 1968 because apparently there was no specific date that everything was changed over. They probably were just getting rid of stock as they went so it's all mixed up. In a way that's good because I can go either way and still have a correct car. ;)

My car has the sliding ashtray also....I assume you mean the one the goes up and down vs the flip out type. Or is there another I have not seen?

Your car must have been very near the end of the Inland shifter production.

Bull,

I checked the front belts in my car and the part numbers are as follows.

Front lap belt (L and R) 2945177

Driver side recoil belt 2945199

I could not get to the others as I need to move some stuff. Let me know if you need them and I will do more digging.

The belts are all dated the 1968-1 so that is 1st quarter of 1968 belts in a April 27th build date car. So I could see 1967-4 belts in your car if it was a January car.

Yea, the up and down ash tray as opposed to the one that pivots. I've been told that the sliding ash trays were a thing of the past by the end of '68. So it says on the '68 registry website: "Ash tray- The dash ashtray opens differently. The 1968 door slides down to expose a recessed ash tray and lighter. The style may have changed during the '68 production, but all later years used a unit that pivoted out of the dash."

And like you say, I probably got one of the last few Inland shifters.

That would probably work. What color are they?

All of my belts have the textured color including the shoulder belts. I will check my dad's '68 GTX for a build date also. The chrome buckles are like the one's in his '66 Coronet 500.

hey bull just checked my belts and I was wrong all front ones on my car have the textured color on the buckles even the shoulder belts and all the rear seatbelts are chrome including the center one in back :icon_smile_wink:

P.S. those pictures you posted of the belts look just like my rear belts but part number is different on mine they are #2862255 but the 1967-3 SAE-J4c are the same...........the fronts floor near door male adaptor reads #2945198     1967-4   and shoulder strap are #2945154    1967-4     numbers on floor from consul to shoulder buck to lap are missing, hope that wasn't to confusing cause i didn't understand a word i was saying ???

Bull, most pre 68 built chargers I have seen and all the ones I have owned had textured front buckles
and chrome rear buckles, and several only had two rear seat belts and chrome stock. The 68 and up
built chargers seem to have textured seat belts all the way around and 3 belts in the rear.

Here are a few pics of my May built 68 charger, it has shoulder belts if you look close you can see the
chrome male end sewn into the front belts about half way up the belt. The belt date codes are almost
always 4 or 5mo prier to the production date of the car.

Thanks, Dan. That's weird that it's half and half. So do you think mine could go either way then since it was shipped 8 days into 1968? I guess according to build dates I should have pre-68 belts with chrome in the back and textured in the front, correct?

I would say it could have come either way, you might or might not have chrome buckles and 2 or 3
of them as well, that was a crazy period to try and figure out. Now the shoulder belts started as you
know 1/1/68 does yours have them with a hole through the headliner for the large bolt?? you would
also have the buckle clips with the sun visor for the belts to hook to.

Nope. None of that stuff.

OK, then your car slipped through without getting the belts, so your front lap belt will not
have or need the male buckle sewn into it like the one in my picture.
