Title: The long process: Restoring my 68 *Video added*
Post by: Reezee on January 28, 2018, 05:15:31 PM
Hi All,

I figured, since you guys love pictures so much, I'd start sharing what we are currently doing to my 68. It's gonna be a long build, mainly because it takes a long time for money to roll in :icon_smile_big:. But we'll take it step by step.

Sorry for the size of the photos.

You might've seen these pictures earlier of how I got the car:

I thought long and hard about leaving at is and just get running and drive the wheels off of it, mainly due to budget. But I knew that wasnt the ultimate dream that I've always had. So, we decide to just tear it down and get it blasted.

But overall, I am very lucky with how solid it is:

So now metal and body work starts. It will need the rear valance replaced, take out all the dents around the car, replace the messed up part in the left quarter, convert the '69 fender to a'68 fender along with a looooot of little holes to weld up because of the landau top and the side trim all along the car.

What can is say? One step at the time  :icon_smile_big:

What are the holes down the rear quarters? Look like some sort of trim holes.

Reezee welcome to the brotherhood,

I dont know it's exact history. I bought it of someone in Montana. Which isnt the driest state for these cars. He bought it from a friend of his and planned on restoring it, unfortunately he had to sell and I got to buy it. No fender tag or build sheet. Was a plain jane 318 car. Now has a 440 that doesnt run and a 4 speed that the car would need to be converted for. So when I get to that point, it's probably going to be a 727 anyway.

They are. It had the sideline trim in it with alot of rivets.

Good luck with your project.  I hope you keep the U.S. Daisy mag wheels.  Those look great especially if you're going for a "back in the day" look.

Thanks Alot! You might hate me though, I just sold them with a bunch of other parts im not going to use to fund the restoration :-\. At the end of the build it is gonna be a black Charger on black steel wheels. As you can see, I will end up with a very original car  :icon_smile_big:

So we got some more work done. The trunk area still needed sandblasting and it had a pretty messed up rear valance. Unfortunately, the trunk was in worse shape than expected and will need replaced. However, this is the "worst" unexpected metal/rust setback we found. So I am still counting my blessings. Some ridiculous oversized pics below.

The Valance:

Everything in the right valance corner is a bit out of whack:
https://scontent-amt2-1.xx.fbcdn.net/v/t31.0-8/27629475_1805930532815723_2337744066604780776_o.jpg?oh=88e111483cf34c7dbbed9393df21ba89&oe=5ADEAF8F

Some damage behind the valance too, aswell as the taillight panel:

At least these guys are clean:

The center section however... Not so much:

Lower rear window corners need a bit of work too:

So, next step is fixing all of that!

If I look at these pictures, I seem to step back in time a few years on mine... ::)
Dont feel bad, all trunk floors of a Mopar B body seem to look that way after a couple of decades.

Hang in there and be patient. You'll get there eventually.

If someone is willing to educate me, please do. I upload them in their fullsizes through Facebook, since imgurl and such are all messed up.

Has the car been on a frame machine?   Just looking at the damage and the "crinkles" in the sheet metal, here and there, it might have been in a rear end collision in the past.  Do the rear frame rails look ok and the spring hangers?  Some of the damage looks funny, or maybe it's just shadows.

Im guessing it is the shadows. Frame seems to be straight as an arrow, aswell as the spring hangers. If I get around to it, Ill snap a few pictures of them.

It's been a while since I posted. Currently waiting on the shop to start metal work and for some replacement panels to come in.

It did give me time to finish this video: https://youtu.be/pz-tsDyFwTk. I hope you guys like it! Love to hear what you think.
