Title: Charger 500 @ R&R Auto Salvage from mid 90s
Post by: StoneCold on November 23, 2011, 07:25:22 PM
Came across an old fax from '94 that I got in reply to a list of project cars I was curious about. John said they had a Dark green on green 500, auto with cowl damage, $4500. Anyone know what became of this car? Pics?

About 1992 I got an 833 trans. from him and he had a 500 that was a burner that he wanted $10K for. Wonder if it was the same car...

The burnt 500 at R&R  was a Hemi 500-- think  it came from IL.

The Blue HEMI 500 that was at RR has been restored and still around. Very nice looking ride now too I might add.

The burnt Hemi 500 at R & R was said to be Kyle Drake's old car.   I recently posted a pic of it when it was in the storage lot with MoparJohn's Daytonas years before.   It was a bronze car.

The roasted hemi 500 is most likely the kyle drake car that came out of here in  KC  .  It sat in the junk yard down of 435 back in the 70's next to mopar johns two daytona's .
Kyle barn burnt to the ground and slobe bought what was left of the car .   I'm sure the title and numbers for that car are still out there somewhere .

that building was awesome. 6 pack cars hemi's, sox cars. i was down there 1 time looking for a charger windshield and they had one in that building against the wall. we went in to check it out to see if he needed to pull one.while in there of course he had to give me the tour. OMG...... i thought i was in heaven. i do remember a triple black charger with the 440 six pack setting first in the row on the left. it was hard to move past that one car. :drool5:

Here's the fax I sent that had the 500 listed. Nice sampling of the inventory list  :drool5:

Sounded like an amazing place to see back in the day. I saw a stack of pictures a friend of my brother took when he stopped in after coming back from Texas with a car and load of parts in '90. They were saying the Hemi cars had blue tarps on them and there were a quite number of blue tarps in the background of the pictures. There was a shot of a green 500 as well in the grass. Must have been the same one.

Doug,
Thanks for posting the picture of Kyle's old Hemi 500! It brings back memories of the salvage yard! I remember all the other old cars that were part of that storage area like the early 60's Lincoln next to the 500.
I wonder how much damage the 500 incurred during it's stay there? A quick look shows it's missing the rear end, the trunk is unlatched and the door glass is down! Does anyone know if the Hemi was in it when it was brought in?
Mopar John

There was a 500 20 plus years in a wrecking yard here, Bronze color 440 car. In 2005 or so I bought the roof/back window off of it but sold it before completeing my Daytona clone project, besides I used a Vega rear window rear filler anywho. Deck lid was gone before I got to it, car was hit by a train in front, so wasn't a lot left of the car which is why I cut off what was needed, not sure if what is left of it is still there or not.

:o  man that is disavow for sure seeing your photos, that is funny, that is where they sat in my head, just bought my first new car (318 extended cab Dakota scalded ape for the day), my photos are just about just like those, now I have to find them.  I reasonably sure I was there in 92-93, I think I offered 4500 as declined (priced at 6k-6500 sound right).     ;D

If you look real close, you can see the driver's side "A" pillar is smashed, and the windshield broken.

I asked where you could find a replacement molding ?

He said I've got one I'll throw in with the car...

The price he told me that day?....

$4500 :slap: :brickwall:

Wow, there are some old memories - I was at Ron Slobe's in 1989.  I bought a '70 SuperBee from him in 1988 after meeting him at the Nat's that year.

I was visiting U of M at Rolla, so we stopped in at his place and got the grand tour of the pole barn, the fields, his basement, etc.  He was a great man that is surely missed.

For what is worth looking through all my car show and salvage yard mass photos from the 90 was over due, I took nearly a roll of 35mm in there, cool cars for sure conv chall, AARs, etc.  The wife seems to think it was 1994-5.  Scanned some, need to find an easy way to copy 35 negs to good quality jpgs, is there anywhere to do that.  Anycase here is a couple I took and have a couple enlarged framed in my garage in B&W (necessary garage art)

If I am remembering correctly.. he had priced a nice green 500 or maybe it was a hemi RT in the shop behind the office with a stack of nice cars in the mid teens, the one along the one road here.  Also recall he had a blue 500/daytona at his house I think, never saw that one (out of my price range at the time).

Oh wow! That is amazing to see so many high end cars sitting around like they were nothing. I would have loved to have gone there back then. Granted, I was a teenager then and wouldn't have been able to afford anything  if I wanted it. Thanks for posting.

As for scanning the negatives, I have a negative scanner and it works well. I think you can take them to Walmart or somewhere similar that develops film and they can make a photo cd for you.

that yard wasnt really that bad priced. the last trip i made there i picked up a rear seat and a few interior pieces, a rear bumper, front bumper for my 70 and paid 125.00. the trip was made because my buddies car caught fire while his uncle was welding a quarter panel on with the interior in. the roof got damaged bad and all the interior. he got a roof cut off a 72 charger, back seat door panels front and rear, center console and windshield plus knobs and things that got damaged all for 375.00. of course i think the days were numbered at that point. we took lunch down there with us and parked between the rows of chargers and went through picking parts and enjoying the day. didnt know it would be my last visit. :rotz:

Amazing the car would be still kicking around there even in '99

I bought the cowl damaged C500 in around 94 not long after I had gotten married. There wasn`t much left up at R&R as it was all getting cleared out.  My mother told me I got taken to the bank when she found out how much I paid for the car. Little did she know.  When I bought the car the mo title said it was an XS car so I had to go the the state trooper to get that fixed. Wanted to build a daytona out of it but when we moved and built a shop the car had to go to help pay for it.  I have a charger that I am building into a Nascar version that I am using the A pillars on.

I got the video with the tour of R&R...definitely worth the purchase in my opinion if you've been there or just have an interest in a collection like this. Ron gives a rundown of many of the 440 six pack and hemi cars in the the collection. He mentioned several times about creating a museum when he had enough cars restored.  Did he ever get a chance to restore many? He did mention a few that were done. Was trying to collect a six pack and hemi of everything made and had several cars to trade. Sounded like he was trading hockey cards :)  His tour was about 40mins of the video. Could have been a little better if all they walked up to all the cars being talked about instead of just standing at the end of a small row and panning around. Often you could barely see the car when they were behind one another. At any rate, still worth the purchase I felt.

He also had a B5 blue Hemi Charger 500...don't know if that one has been discussed before...as well as a Superbird. They also showed the copper Daytona with the R/T emblem on the rear panel. Mentioned another Charger 500 but it was never in plain sight...could have been under a tarp.

Aside from the A pillar car that I bought they had another green C500 inside that was a running car less back glass and trim. The asking price for it then was 5500 which a friend of mine purchased and later sold and offered it to me.  I should have bought it. Would have been the best 5k I ever spent. At that time he still didnt have a glass for it. I think it went to oklahoma.

Hi!  My name is Julie Brown and I am the daughter of the late Ron Slobe from R&R Auto Salvage in Aurora, MO.  The Salvage yard had been sold and resold since he past away from cancer so they are unaware of the whereabouts of any of Ron's prior Mopar collection.  We currently are looking for any information of any of my father's old car collection.  We would love copies of pictures, videos or an opportunity to view some of his prior car collection whether restored or not. We have a 15 year old son who is very interested in Mopars so we thought it would be fun to show him how much he would have loved hanging out with his grandfather.

Thank You,
Julie Brown

What can I say-----Ron Slobe was a (( ICON }} of Mopar World,, knew more about  Mopars than anyone in the world at the time.
I knew Ron many years,, from before Mopars were hot, till the end. I live 30 miles from the old R&R so was there many times.
The barn was a as-um place, cars door handle to door handle,------But  --If you wanted to see the really good stuff,,,basement of the house,
Some of the cars mention above I vaguely recall but  its 7 to 8 years to late ask now,,, I do remember the c-500  with no back glass. Tried to buy it. Several parts on my black Daytona came from Ron.
   Julie,,,,Good luck on your  task.

Thank you for your comments!!!  As the saying goes... I wish I would have know then what I know now.  Took my 15 years old son to really get me to understand what my dad's dream was all about.  Back then I was a teenage girl who liked foreign cars (I know, so wrong in many ways!!!).  From taking me dirt bike riding, to cruising around town in his Muscle Cars, to airplane rides, to making sure I had everything I thought I needed - I absolutely had an amazing childhood thanks to him! No car can ever replace all the wonderful memories that I have with my dad over the summers! I miss him more and more every year!!!

I remember spending weeks and weeks signing him up for every Mopar/Muscles car magazine and typing up all the vin numbers on each car.  He even taught me how to decode what each number meant.  I found a few cars through Googling "Ron Slobe Mopar" online. I have some old pictures of some of his cars that I can share when I get back home.  I also found a video online through Five Star Productions that toured R&R with Ron. That was an amazing find!!!

Ultimately, it is fun to honor his memory! Would be super cool to pull a show together in his name and donate the proceeds to Colon Cancer Foundation. He fought a good fight for many years!!!  He only went to school through the 6th grade due to his medical condition. I will always be one of his #1 fans!!! Please keep the word out, appreciate any information about my dad, Ron Slobe, and his cars.

Thanks Again!

I got to meet Ron once as I bought an engine from him back in maybe 1984. I showed an interest in his collection and he took the time to show me around. I was quite impressed but Ron was collecting long before the muscle car craze. I remember the Charger 500 as it sat out by the road for quite a while with $5000 as the price.
As it turned out the engine I bought for my chevy pick-up did not run just right and he bent over backwards to make sure things were taken care of. He was a great guy to deal with. I still live about 60 miles away.

I bought my A12 SuperBee from Ron in '93 as I recall.  He had a orange coupe with the Dana and an F6 hardtop without.  Ended up with the hardtop.  Three things I remember.  Looking at one of the (two-three?) 1972 Six-Pack cars that were built, an E-body convertible in the basement with a VIN sequence number something like 000004, and the stacks of Hemi parts.  I almost wet myself.  So tragic that he passed on so young.

24 years ago, my Challenger T/A was hit twice. Once while I was in it (driver made a u-turn from the curb without looking) and the second time was a hit & run while it was parked. Luckily for me, the damage both times was in the same fender (I still have it) and there were witnesses to both events.

My body shop looked for months to find a correct 1970 fender without a radio antenna hole. They found a NOS one at R & R and your dad was even willing to ship it all the way to Alaska.

I always wanted to meet him in person just to say thanks.

Well I'm here in Newfoundland Canada, thats a long way from R&R salvage. In 1984 I phoned R&R looking for a set of 426 side markers for my 66 Coronet 500. Ron Slobe  came on the phone . I told him where i was from,  "never heard of it" he said , we must have chatted for about 1/2 hr . he was asking me about the place , what the fishin was like  etc etc . Couldn't get clear of him j/k lol . What a fine man to talk to and was a Mopar maniac as myself. I asked him about the side markers and he said he didn't have any new ones but , seeing i was from such a long ways away he would go out in the front yard and pull a perfect set off a Coronet he had out in front.
a week later I get them in the mail and and I still have them and the original box they came in .
I was planning on going to R&R when I visited my cuz in St Louis , unfortunatley I never got the chance to meet him or to see his stash of Mopars .  RIP

WoW xx29.
So the infamous R&R 'green on green' 500 is now in the UK.
A stunning car indeed, rebuilt by a Finnish guy living in LA.
He spent 400 hours on the bodywork alone.
Then sold it to three English guys visiting Tom Nelson race engines on Oso Avenue, Chatsworth.
The Swedish guy had a unit next door to Tom's place where he restored Chargers...
Its strange but the English guys knew more about C500's than most American car guys, he said!
I met a guy in Prescott Arizona, that knew more about English Jaguars than me?

Anyways, once he sold one C500 to the Limeys, he then sells them another!
Yep the green on black 4-speed dana car...mine... :pity:
This Limey guy says, he is forever in your debt xx29.

My 500 is the grey one, the one on the right, I believe is your Dad's.
Both shipped to California in 1995ish...
Under the gray primer is a red and black paint scheme, not dissimilar to the Don Garlits 'Crower car'.
Both C500's are Florida cars, so if neither were the DG 'Crower' car, where is it?
How many C500's went to Florida???

Hi Julie, I will get some up to date pics of your Dad's C500 for you.
Hopefully, it is the right car?
Limey Jon
