Title: I ordered a new Challenger GT ( I got mine, with pictures )
Post by: 66FBCharger on February 06, 2017, 08:33:50 AM
I recently ordered a new Challenger GT AWD. I drove one that the dealer had. I really liked it. Any GTs that are out there on dealers lots are pretty heavily optioned and are priced from $37 k on up. Most of the options are electronic features which I don't need or want.
I ordered a Torred exterior with black and ruby leather interior. the only options I ordered are a sunroof and a spare tire. The car has a ton of features that are standard . I am excited to get the car.
To those who have ordered a Challenger, how long did it take for you to receive your car?

Wife has been waiting for months for it to come out... we have none on dealer lots up here. Maybe it's time to see if we can order one. Sad when they're made in Canada... 90 miles from our door.  :brickwall:

In January 12th 2015 we ordered our R/T. It arrived The first week of March. Just about 8 weeks even though they expected it to be between 11 and 12 weeks. SCORE !

Sorry no plum crazy for the GT.
I was able to go into the Dodge sight and go to Build and Price. On the left side you can select the model. Look close there is an option to pick Challenger GT.

I guess I am lucky. The dealer told me 6-8 weeks. I ordered the car one week ago ( 1/30/17). Today the dealer called and said he was notified today that they have a shipping date (2/15/17) for my car EVEN though it has not been built or scheduled to be built yet!

Just talked to a dealer up here. NOPE.. can't build one.. can't order one.. none on dealer lots and they're all at the mercy of Chrysler Canada despite how stupid a move this is. The car is built in Brampton, Ontario in CANADA FFSakes.  :brickwall: You'd think they'd do better on sales numbers introducing them to the snow belt first... dumb shits... Winter will be over here before they are released, up here WHERE THEY'RE BUILT!   :shruggy:

Not sure the wife's gonna wait much longer... might get stuck with a Fusion AWD or Mazda X9 in the garage...  :brickwall:

Keep all your documents, sounds like you may have a "one of one" car on your hands, and in 50 years folks will want the window sticker, order sheet, etc..., lol.

Title: Re: I ordered a new Challenger GT
Post by: birdsandbees on February 06, 2017, 11:46:37 PM
Yep.. with about as much HP as our old Magnum / HP V8's and more gears to use that power and keep things in the torque range... in a lighter car than our old B Bodies.

That and they couldn't keep transfer cases in the V8 Charger AWDs.. so they're both only available with V6's now for the AWD models.
Title: Re: I ordered a new Challenger GT
Post by: Kern Dog on February 07, 2017, 03:20:36 AM
Lighter? I REALLY doubt that.
The AWD system negates any weight advantage the V6 might have over the 5.7. Our 2015 R/T is 4180 and isn't even a loaded down model. The Hellcat weighs close to 4400.
The 68-70 Charger usually always came in under 3900. Mine weighed 3850 before frame connectors, torque boxes and sound deadening was added.

I agree that is really dumb! I would think if you are selling a car that you are advertising as great in snow. Why would you not introduce it in November (and in Canada) in order to sell as many as possible? Sometimes I wonder who makes these decisions.

It might be, but I bought it to drive. I will keep all the paperwork, but I doubt many of the current new cars will be sought after in the future.

V6 auto, I know. I wish it was available as a stick and a V8.
Anyway, I was impressed when I test drove it. It is 305 Horsepower with an 8 speed automatic. The performance numbers I read were 0-60 in 6.2 secs. and the 1/4 mile in 14.2secs. Not too bad.

I just looked up the weight of the 2017 Challenger GT. It is 4108#. It is probably 300# or so more than our Chargers.

Thanks for the weight correction KD.

The car will still have enough Pep for what the wife needs as a daily driver to get through the snow. It sure won't go like her slamming the gears in her 350LT1 powered x 4 gear x 4.56 rear end '64 Vette... and that's probably a good thing or I'll always have her new car and be leaving her my truck!

Just talked with our local Dodge guy again today... he thinks he can now order her one!!  :2thumbs: Still bummed out there's no Purple. We'll have to build the car she wants on the USA Dodge website and then bring him all the information as the Canadian site still won't let you build a car..  :brickwall:

DANG.. what I was told a few minutes ago by the dealer as well. That sucks.. Purple was our daughters favourite colour and why the wife wanted it, but she also likes slime green so that may be it. Now to "build" her a car on the USA Dodge site and then tell the dealer what she wants to get an order in! Hope they take Canadian Tire money..  :yesnod: as the 'Bee has done a good cleaning our our accounts..  :-\

SXT, SXT Plus, R/T, GT AWD, R/T Plus, R/T shaker, T/A, R/T Scat Pack, R/T Plus Shaker, T/A Plus, 392 Hemi Scat Pack Shaker, T/A 392, SRT 392, SRT Hellcat.

Have the wife down to two choices now.. she has until Wednesday AM to decide which!  :yesnod:

m favorite was when they had the Charger R/T "Road and Track" trim.

I dunno. I can see the practical and performance value of having an AWD car, but that stance and wheel fitment just look weird.

Living on the edge of Georgian Bay (Lake Huron), with a 1200 foot laneway, I'd be happy if it sat 4" higher!  :yesnod: She just doesn't want a truck or SUV anymore after 25+ years of driving same.

As for the wheels, need to see what we can work on for options there. Doesn't seem like any choice other than changing to gloss black..

What would move me to buy an AWD car is electric drive. --But it won't replace what I like about RWD muscle cars.
A small hemi engine ;) to refill/charge the batteries after spirited driving and keep up with a long haul seems like a way forward that could work fine. :shruggy:

Its more the weird offset in the front. No depth. It's always awkward when a manufacturer takes a platform originally designed to be RWD and adapts it to AWD, as opposed to a platform that was AWD from the beginning - like Jeeps, Subarus, and Audis.

What is the second color? Is that the redline tricoat? I considered the redline tricoat color but wanted to see it in person, but no one around had any to look at.
I like the wheels. They look like a dark gunmetal gray. In my opinion, they look good. I want to get a set of winter tires and wheels for the car for next winter. Also, I would like to see if there are  better performing summer tires in that size available, instead of the all season tires that the car comes with ( for when they wear out).

Thought I had her going Octane Red.. the dark one.. but nope, she wants to "find it in a parking lot". Ordering a Green Go with Hockey stripe and moon roof tomorrow morning!

As for tires... hoping like every other car sold in Ontario these days, that we'll get the free "winter package" which is a spare set of dedicated winters and wheels!  :yesnod: Generally up here you get identical wheels to what comes on the car (not cheap steels) and winter tires.

you do have the OPTION - it's called "cold hard cash" -  the dealer knows it is popular in CANADA and is pricing things accordingly

they aren't giving them away for FREE

Every car dealer in Ontario has the "free winter package deal" going.. and if they don't you just ask for winter tires and rims to be thrown in. Everything on the lot has it built into the price like 6bbl states, they don't give anything away for free! I was able to get them thrown in on my daughters Mazda CX-3.. and the daughter in laws Jeep even. BUT NO DEAL on a built to order car we found out today.. and nobody has any snow tires in stock anyhow. It will come with the all seasons noted on the build.. no option to change up here. Only option we have vs USA is we can pick all black or chrome and black inset wheels. Our salesman THINKS he ordered her ALL BLACK and if not (I think he had it backwards) we'll see how they look and if she doesn't like it he'll be buying her all black.

So we started at MSRP and built a car. Not many options to choose from anyhow.

Green Go..  Hockey Stripe.. X9 black/ black interior.. spare tire included up here for free !!  :hah:.. Power Sunroof.. Driver Convenience Group.. Tech Group and the Nav 8.4 so she doesn't get lost.  "5N6 "Easy Order".. 4EA "sold vehicle".

Kick in the nuts... $1795 delivery ! We're less than 80 miles from the Brampton car plant!  :brickwall:

$189 to put nitrogen in the tires!  "Can I just have air" NO !  :brickwall:

I've had a lot of stuff "disappear" when buying new vehicles over the past 30+ years Dirk.. but considering Dodge Canada hasn't even got a GT AWD on their website, you can't build one.. they are not in a Challenger brochure, etc.... we did good finding someone that found a way to even order one for us up here, so we'll take our licks!

Dealers only have a certain margin in a car that they can give away in the form of discount...if they could knock over a thousand dollar delivery charge off, all it means is that you did not negotiate yourself enough cash off the car in the first place. When I was selling cars for VW/Audi (worked for them for 15 years or so) I used to find it difficult not to laugh when people asked for thousands off the cars. Some seemed to thing we had 40 or 50% to play with. When I started there we had a 17.5% margin in new cars...by the time i left in about 2002 that had been slashed to just 5%. People still used to ask for 25% of though...lol! The smaller margins and less discounting did lead to higher residual values when they traded in though....so the buyers make their cash back at the end. Same as anything...items that are routinely heavily discounted (as Ford's were at the time) depreciate faster. I'm sure things will be a bit different for dealers in the States though.
Title: Re: I ordered a new Challenger GT
Post by: Dino on February 15, 2017, 06:24:15 PM
Yeah there's a lot of variability with these but it's well known here that delivery fees are usually a load of bs. "Usually"   ;)

I got close to $4K off of my Accord in 2010 which was more than I expected and more than the average discount for my area, but I bought it while the new models were rolling in so the timing was right.

I'm seriously considering a Tesla Model S in a few years. I wonder if I can get ANY discount on that beast!

I understand and feel what you feel.
When one orders a car getting it soon is not enough.
When I ordered a challenger srt in 09 I waited weeks while my -built- car sat in a lot with many others.
Knowing ones car is built but not moving in the system is a frustration.

Just happy she's going to have her new car by months end! Means we don't have to renew the insurance on her TrailBlazer that is due on April 3rd and she might get to test out the AWD in the snow before Spring comes!

Its has enough that lay people already confuse them w Camaros....now theyre gonna ask if it has the "5.0"?

I agree man.... :yesnod:
I agree but many people forget Dodge used GT on Darts starting in 1964 (I think).Actually I think there was a Lancer GT in '60 or '61?

Well they've certainly used up darn near every combination without using SS/ RS    14 different variations of badging!  :scratchchin:

SXT, SXT Plus, R/T, GT AWD, R/T Plus, R/T shaker, T/A, R/T Scat Pack, R/T Plus Shaker, T/A Plus, 392 Hemi Scat Pack Shaker, T/A 392, SRT 392, SRT Hellcat.

Have the wife down to two choices now.. she has until Wednesday AM to decide which!  :yesnod:

What is the second color? Is that the redline tricoat? I considered the redline tricoat color but wanted to see it in person, but no one around had any to look at.
I like the wheels. They look like a dark gunmetal gray. In my opinion, they look good. I want to get a set of winter tires and wheels for the car for next winter. Also, I would like to see if there are  better performing summer tires in that size available, instead of the all season tires that the car comes with ( for when they wear out).

I received my new Challenger GT Sat. (3/4/17). I ordered it Jan 31st 2017. It was built (2/13/17), released (2/15/17) and then shipped (2/16/17). It sat in a lot in Mechanicville NY after it got off the train, waiting for a truck to take it to the dealership in CT. Dodge gave me a window of 2/24/17 to 3/2/17 for the car to arrive at the dealership. It arrived at the dealer on Thursday 3/2/17. Originally I was told figure 6-8 weeks for delivery of my car. In the end it was just over 4 weeks! It was the longest 4 weeks ever.
We already named her Scarlet. She's a beauty! I love it. It is awesome!

We ordered our B5 2015 in mid January 2015. It was at the dealer here in Northern CA the first week of March. Train transport across country took time.

Congrats--I get that you had fun with the order and the waiting. :2thumbs:
I felt the same fun when I ordered my 09 srt challenger new.  I also had a great adventure getting a one way flight to get my 2015 hellcat and a 1500 mile drive home with it.

What comes to mind is how cool and fun it is to make up one's mind, find, and buy a car.  It need -not- be a new car but it is new to us.

The down contrast of that experience is when we have to-- or need to sell something.  That experience seems to not have a fun part aside the space it provides.
If one has something special to sell and seeks top dollar it's like being constipated. -- We have to do this--and it is not easy. :eek2:

Yesterday I went to a plumbing supply house. As I approached my car and popped the trunk, a guy approached me and asked me "what's the story with the GT emblems?". I explained to him it was AWD and was a new model that was introduced in Jan. I explained that it was the same driveline and AWD system as the Charger. He seemed to be familiar with AWD Chargers and was aware that the V6s really moved.
At the end, he told me he thought that someone had just stuck GT emblems from a Mustang on a Challenger! Pretty funny!

I did tell the guy that Dodge has used GT since the Lancer GT of the early 60's. Most people don't know about Dodge using GT, but know about Mustang GTs. I might have to remove the emblems so I don't have to deal with the clueless.

It is not an option here in California either but I never put ours on.Yeah, there is a small fine for not having a front plate but I haven't put a front plate on anything but my work truck.
I specifically requested to the dealer than when the car came in, I did NOT want holes drilled in the front to mount the bumper. A guy on ChallengerTalk put suction cups on his license plate bracket so he can mount it when he is in places where he might be seen by Police.

Not here either... :D

On the other hand, both of the states closest to me only have rear plates so, I imagine, the cops are fairly used to it. Unless I'm doing something totally dumb I doubt they want to spend the energy to see if my rear plate is from a state that requires a front plate.

There are companies that make hidden brackets that either fold or have a quick release to remove the plate at shows. They all move the plate down near the lower opening so they don't look terrible even if you never hide/remove the plate.

I was fortunate. My salesman knew I was a car guy, so he asked if I wanted the front plate bracket installed or not. I told him to leave it off and don't drill the holes. I am willing to take my chances of a ticket for not having a front plate.

Ive been rollin my challenger w out a front plate for a year or so, but my day of reckoning may come soon. I do have CA black plates that blend in nicely w the black car (as opposed to the regular white plates), so i should throw it on sooner rather than later (see my method below)

I used to have it on my last challenger w long toggle bolts going through the plates bottom holes through the lower grille. I put strips of double sided tape w the backing still on around the back of the plate to keep it from scratching the paint. Cheap and easy hack w out drilling.

I drove my new 2009 srt challenger without front plate until I sold it last year.  The plate mount was still in the trunk where the dealer put it.

So far the same goes for my 2015 hellcat that I bought new in Wisconsin. The dealer left it up to me to comply with laws where I live --or not.

I'm in Oregon and had a photo radar ticket come in the mail once.  Their were two photos--one coming- and one going.  zap  :slap:

In all the write ups I understood you could adjust how much front wheel drive kicked in... any idea on this or how to program? All I can find is Comfort / Regular / Sport settings on the steering and Regular and Sport on the ride - traction control.  :scratchchin: :shruggy:

I don't know about you, but I didn't get any owners manual or paperwork to explain anything about the AWD. I didn't see anything in print about being able to adjust the front wheel drive portion of the AWD.
My understanding is the split is set at 68% rear and 32% front when in AWD.  I would think the gear(s) in the transfer case would determine the split.
What I have learned (mostly by putting the screen up that says whether you are in RWD or AWD and trying different things).
If the temperature is 39*F or less, you will be in AWD, If you shutoff the ESC or turn the sport mode on, you'll be in AWD. If you go into the manual shift mode (either paddle shifters or with the console shifter) you'll go into AWD. If your wipers are on, after a short period of time you will go into AWD.
I'm not sure if any of that helps you.
How does your wife like the car so far?
John

WIFE?... haven't seen her for 24 hours now LOL... already put 300 Km on the car!

Hard to believe, considering the charger has had AWD for 5 years or so, that there is nothing in the quick manual that came in the glove box. Searching Challenger AWD brings up nothing, but Charger AWD last night brought up just what you talk about. Paddle or manual mode.. sport mode.. wipers etc. Driving reviews I saw stated stuff about being able to adjust the "dedication" or amount of front drive, but maybe they were blowing smoke.

Guess I'll just have to wait for her to come back again today and go try and do donuts on the runway with it!  :yesnod: ;D

You can get 2 each long toggle bolts from the hardware store. Run the bolt and expanding nut into the lower valance grille. I also grabbed some 3/8 inch fuel line and split it up the middle to put on the edge of the license plate holder, to avoid chaffing on the lower valance and painted bumper.

Too late when it's already drilled and mounted.

Also you can't do this on the wife's car, where you have your plate is exactly where the big "eye" is to sense for adaptive cruise control and collision avoidance putting on the brakes for you.

Lived in snow for 55 years Alfi.. I know about all the rules of physics!

Part of teaching my 3 kids (boy and 2 girls) to drive was letting them practice doing 540's in front of that hangar door IN 2 WHEEL DRIVE. They weren't allowed out on the roads until they could pin point a straight out departure perfectly to head back down the laneway!

Cool...I lived on a big farm as a kid (my parents still do) and as soon as us kids could reach the pedals (12 or 13 for most of us) we drove the ancient farm Series 1 Land Rovers. Not much snow here in the South but since it was thick clay mud most places I learnt to drift a car before I could change gear properly. Was quite a shock at seventeen to realise you don't have to drift everywhere on the roads....but you do need to signal changes of direction.....I had wondered what that little stick on the column was for!
