Title: FINALLY BACK TO WORK ON DAYTONA
Post by: daytonalo on December 28, 2007, 07:44:34 PM
My buddy Al James who is a First class body guy  is over for one week, we beat up on my car today !! Goal , next week in primer - surfacer ! After that we are going to paint car in single stage to show any flaws we may have missed in Surfacer , sand the single stage then paint Lamborghini Orange ! by the way I made a Custom Dolly to roll my H.O.S around , complete with adjustable casters !

This is NOT an insult but somehow Larry I pictured your shop to be operating room clean with stainless steel benches, lots of lighting and everything placed exactly where it is supposed to be.
Keep the pics coming it's nice to see it all coming together like that.  :2thumbs:

Thanks , are logic is single stage is extremely very shiny , that will show any flaw we may have missed in Surfacer and as thick as it is will fill any ultra fine sand scratch . What do you think ??

You've heard of "Internet Time"? Well, three hours is something like 40 days in "Bronzy Time". :P It was actually closer to 2 hours 20 minutes (and 10 posts - which seems rather slow for the boy).  :nana:

Larry, are you going to spray it with poly surfacer or just regular primer surfacer? :shruggy:
Title: Re: FINALLY BACK TO WORK ON DAYTONA
Post by: daytonalo on January 01, 2008, 12:38:03 PM
Epoxy then poly- surfacer , then guide-coat black , sand until I remove my fingerprints , paint single stage orange , sand that , then paint three stage . I hope I'm not driving a Rascal or Lark when car is complete !!

My body man was thinking about putting the Lamborghini orange on a truck we are going to start tearing apart next weekend. He changed his mind its a 3 stage paint first of all and its extremely hard to shoot consistently, even from panel to panel. If you are shooting everything at the same time.  If you get a rock chip driving to the show it will be almost impossible to "blend the paint from if you only shoot that panel. Its an extremely difficult product to deal with. However in saying this a Daytona would look awesome with this color paint. I am not trying to sway you in any direction. I am just trying to give you the facts about this paint and the issues with it. I am just dont want you to be dissapointed with the end result.  It is an awesome color and is just gorgeous. Just my  :Twocents:.

For that reason we decided not to use House of Kolor because of level of complexity with their system . We are going to use BASF Lamborghini orange .

I heard for years and Hot Rod [ Larry ] always told me that the window with their system is a nightmare , something about you have to have the the in between clear coats have to be stringy or it wont work
Title: Re: FINALLY BACK TO WORK ON DAYTONA
Post by: hotrod98 on January 01, 2008, 08:58:21 PM
HOK uses an acrylic lacquer basecoat, a urethane midcoat and a tempermental clearcoat that has to be recoated while it's still stringy. If you wait until their clear is hand slick like other urethane clearcoats, you're screwed. Don't get me wrong, thousands of guys shoot the stuff all of the time, but I'll bet they screwed up the first few times they shot it. To me it's just not worth the trouble, not to mention the high cost.

My friend a professional painter well known in South Jersey and surrounding area , Scott Eller cam over to finish up a Mustang and brought a sample of Lamborghini 3 stage [ Basf] sprayed out on a Volvo S-40 door skin . This color is bad ass !!!!!!!!!!

I hope you're right Larry, But the notes I have from when that car was for sale show:

4 15X7 Mag 500's
275/60/15 Rear
255/60/15 front

:shruggy:

Either way I like the way that white car sits and that's the stance I'm going for...

that was my buddy jim cordell's car and it rode with 275-60's all the way around,  He said when you turned it all the way to the left it hit one tiny spot on the fender and too a hammer and dinked it over 1/2 inch  no more problem .
Other wise after that they looked and performed great .

it wasnt that it was hitting the outer body to damage it was just an inner tab hitting.
