Title: In over my head
Post by: dreamcatcher on July 27, 2019, 06:16:56 PM
Hello fellow Mopar people,
I have a few questions I hope someone can answer. I am building a 68 charger. I have replaced both rear quarters and the trim that curves to the roof rail trim at the rear of the back window has a pretty good gap behind the trim. It seems to be the same on both sides. Has anyone had this issue? I used AMD quarters. Also the slots for the belt line weather strip clips do not match with the new belt line seals. Any help would be appreciated. I am really starting to question the quality of AMD parts. I have there front fenders also and the right side seems fine but the left side marker light does not match the body line when installed. I have done a lot of cars in my 63 years but this charger has been the one to test me to the max trying to get parts to fit right.
Thanx

No words of advice from me, but welcome to the world of Chinese repro parts which in reality are only about 80% correct.

I am no stranger to these parts. I have used AMD for the most part. I have spent 10000.00 + in the past 6 or so years on three different cars. Most after market sheet metal requires some work to fit right. I just wondered if there was a seal or something that goes behind the curved trim piece. The gap is about 1/4 inch and pretty uniform around the curve. It is the same on both sides. And not sure what to do about the belt line strip. But that front fender is not right. I don't know what I will do there. There are no good originals to be had.

Is there a chance that your car had a vinal top. if you take in the thickness of the vinal on both sides that may take care of the gap' Just an idea

I will get a picture tomorrow. As far as I know it was not a vinyl top car. I have the fender tag and build sheet. It was a plane jane 6 banger car. White with white interior.

If you are referring to the "Check" moldings at the base of the C pillars, they only came on cars with vinyl tops.
Yeah...Pictures really do make all the difference when trying to get help on a fitment issue.

If the problem is a unique name, rename the pictures.  If the problem is the picture size is too great, try using a screen capture or the snipping tool in windows (type in command box) and then save with a unique name and try posting that.

This is the fitment of the light on the AMD fender.

Can't really tell what we are looking at in the side light pic.  There are flat side lights and curved side lights, They are not all the same!  Make sure you have the correct side light for your application! WINGNUT

I have the curved lights. But the body line is not in the right place. It wont fit tight in the hole.

The gap in the corner molding looks the same as mine on both sides. I can see the back and it does look unfinished.
Not sure if they're all like that though.
My passenger rear quarter panel has been replaced but the driver's side is original.

Thanx that makes me feel a bit better. It just looks like water would run down the roof rail and get inside the car. Really other than that the quarters went on pretty easy. They were a bit wavy but most repop panels are like that and you just have to work them a bit. Thanx for the post.

Not saying mine is correct but is the same as yours.

There the curved ones that came from the car originally. The right side fits great but the left not so much. The body line that should match the center line in the light is about 1/2 inch higher that it should be.

I'll agree with DirtyTurbin. Except parts are more like 50% correct. :brickwall:

That gap on the window to drip rail trim is common.  Some have speculated that it is a way for the drip rail to drain inside the window cavity then out the bottom.  Who knows?  :shruggy:  Anyway, some fill that gap with something like butyl chalk or seam sealer or such.  Some leave it open, I filled mine thinking that any way I can keep water out of the car is a plus.

I totally agree we all now how the rust was on these cars. Less waterless possible rust. thanx for the post.

Well after a few aggravating phone calls I think AMD admits (maybe kinda sort of ) that their run of 68 left front fenders are not right. They of coarse wont openly admit it but told the place where I bought it from that sending a different fender wont be the answer as it would be the same issue. But they said to take it to a good metal shop and have it fixed and they will pay for it. Or fix it myself and they would pay me. So at least they will take care of it.  :popcrn:

After finding all the nasty rusting happening to the inside of the top edge I sealed up that gap with "Sugru" a clay like putty that drys to hard rubber. (I drove around with no interior for a year looking for leaks. )  :2thumbs:

The gap your showing between the 1/4 and the trim that wraps around the rear window corner is like that. I've seen some original cars that have the same gap. First time I looked at it on one of my rusted heaps I thought something was way wrong until I saw a couple others that I know have original sheet metal.

That's exactly how the gap looks on both sides of my 68.  Original vinyl top car, original quarters still on it, but vinyl top not on it right now.

Well back on track with the front fender. The place I bought them from had their body man tig weld the marker light hole shut and re-drilled it to match the body line. AMD paid for this so priming blocking and ready to paint possibly this weekend... So after a little arguing AMD did come through. My advise is to be sure to look and pre-fit  every part before installation or painting. It pays off!
