Title: 71 Charger headlight Woes
Post by: Simonic on May 18, 2018, 04:00:17 AM
The low beam has never worked correctly on my car and now its not working at all.
Sidelights and High beam work correctly.
I've had problems in the past with the floor mounted dipswitch so i replaced this. No difference.
Whilst turning the lights on and off in the garage i heard a buzzing noise from the front of the car and the dipped headlights came on .
I then had a look in the gold colored box on the inner fender mounted just behind the drivers side headlight.
Is this some sort of relay box?
I opened it up and found two fuses(both good)and two weird looking electrical contacts that looked a bit like ignition pionts?
By touching the ends of these  'points'in turn i could get either dip or main beams to work,so i'm guessing the problem is in here somewhere?
Is this box servicable/adjustable in some way or do i just need to replace it Or is it just a symptom of a different problem?
Thank You Gentlemen

maybe a big metalic box relay with a cover able to be removed ? something like this, two conectors on one side, 3 conectors on the other:

thats an old fashion kind relay, back from 70s and 80s, non original. If still using original kind incandescent headlights there is not need for that ( as far wiring and terminals are good ).

If halogen or some other kind of headlights, the relay is a good upgrade to save the switch points from the added load halogen bulbs require, but replace it for a newer unit, bosch kind.

EDITING...

searching for the old kind relay image, just found this... pretty much interestin to the headlights.

Thank You Sir,
The one i have fitted is the black box you've shown me.
I did take the lid off and inside it all looked clean and pretty new. By touching one of the contacs inside i was able to get the low beam to work ok.
I use std headlights.
If the box is non std i have no problem getting rid of it and i will fit a relay as you suggest.
Then if i choose to upgrade to halogen in the future i should have no trouble.

There is no relay under the hood on my Nov. build '71 with hidden headlights. Sounds like someone rigged up a bypass.

Didn't mean it had anything to do with the hidden headlight option. My headlights don't operate on a relay under the hood. I installed all new wire harness. There isn't a relay involved unless someone custom installed it.

sure! thats what I told previously ;)

Our cars just got relays for Horns as standard, then power windows, concelead headlights and stuff like that if equipped. BUT the only STANDARD relay from factory on all cars was the horn relay and I THINK it was not due the load, really because to be able to be triggered by ground into the steering wheel and still send positive up to the horns... thats just an opinion.

( editing: then since 72, the seatbelt relay also as standard, but for same reason, to drive positive and negative signals at the same time, not due the load )
