Don't you mean Watermelon(')s ;D
It would be neat if they could try and replicate that picture from the proving grounds.
did they folks who did her,.. err,. it,.. see the pics of that rusty watermellon like '70charger on E-pray?..
DANG! You guys just reminded me that my subscription has run out....I wonder if I can get back issues? :rotz:
that watermelon paint job just looks wrong. Nothing against daytona...
A couple more from Carlisle.... and for the record, I happen to love the paint scheme. Guess it's a 1st-Gen type affliction... you either love it or hate it!
Hah! Is that a dealer sticker on the trunk lid?
I didn't notice that until I saw TeeWJay's big pics, that's awesome!! :METAL:
The dealership sticker is a fake. It says "Walter Melon" Dealership. Its a play on words for the Watermelon theme.

CF, that is a dealer sticker on the trunk lip. It says WalterMelon Dodge or something close to that. Very cool car. I'm glad they decided to build it.

I was just thinking the same thing. Cool car.
Yep! I would rather have a clone. I wouldn't be able to drive a real one for fear of something happening to it.
Well, if it's from the "Walter Melon" dealership...I'm glad I didn't bust on GeneralFan01's chops for spelling this thread that way. :icon_smile_big:
I'm glad they built it too, I think it's fantastic! Uhhh...like anything those Dayclona dudes do ISN'T fantastic. ;)
That car looks awesome! I like the paint too. :icon_smile_cool:

Hello Dave, seeing that your aireing your laundry, maybe I'll lend you some rope? Yes I listened to Tedrick praise the lord and sprout the gospel and confess his sins! give me a break! I have no "axe" to grind with Tedrick, a lot of his problems, he brought apon himself; I let him say his "peace", any "allegations" of bad business practices against Tedrick Janak are made by people ( truthfully there are many) who are/have dealt with him( need an ex. go to daytona clones around the world lets see pics topic on this site and look at reply #22 by Kudaken, wonder how many years he waited, before he sold his daytona project in disgust with tedricks hollow promises?)Dave I've seen and heard about your many defending crusades over the years to protray any "allegations" against Tedrick as just hersay or malice, and perhaps in your little world this is how you see it? but in the real world it's not all "rosey" so hopefully this will "put it to bed"; but if you isist apon a "debate" in a public forum? all I can say is " let the TeXas wingcar massacre" unfold........................... :-X

One of the reasons I will never go back to Moparts.com is because of this whole debate about Ted and his past problems. The guy has made his apologies and we all need to let it go. Frankly I AM SICK OF IT. I am not here to say anything pro or con and I could do both about Ted. Life will always go forward, you cannot change the past. What I appreciated about cudaken's comments is that he stated his problem and did not beat the freaking brains out of it. :horse: What I love about this BOARD is that there is not all this venom going back and forth. If someone wants to tout someone's praise, let it be. You tout the praises you want to. It is all cool to me. I do not like anybody mocking someone's faith, whether it is Ted's or anyone's. The thing that ties us all together on this board is that we love MOPARS. Let's focus on our commonalities and leave the past in the past. I have a past, and I would hate to have it thrown in my face all the time.

I don't understand, if I had so much dislike for...... why not continue to hash it out with PM's or emails instead of exposing everyone else to it. As I've said before, some of you people really have it rough.
That '70 Bee is too cool.
Troy, AllBlueRT.... :2thumbs: So...where were we....I'll have to scan that black and white pic of the melon from 1970 in the Dodge dealers display at the Michigan Career Institute. Check out the pic from this weekend. Guess what? They don't melt when they get wet! :icon_smile_big:
Great pic.
very cool picture. what do you use for parking lights?. Rene
On the Daytona, we use what we all use, 69 Valiant; on the Bird, they are the original lights that come in the factory lower valance for the 71 Satellite/RR/GTX.
i thought you used something differant. cause i've been searching for 69 Valiant lights for over a yr. the last pair that i found on ebay went for way to much money. Peace-Rene

Big Block Sam, I have one turn singel off a real Daytona. Not pretty and there is a reason Jim replaced it.
Number's as follow SAE-DP-69V CC 2930157-73.69.1
If you will use it, let me know. Seem's sad to have a real Daytona Part just sittting and only I know what it is. Most guy's that drop by have no clue to what it is and think I to lazy to throw the trash.
Will some one PM me and tell me what the hup bub is about Janka? I saw my name used I just wondering? I will defend Ted a little bite, at the time I was dealing with him he had to many Iron's in the fire. That and at that time he just did one part at a time. Like this month he made fender scoop's, then front spolier, then nose screen's etc. Part's I got where top notch just took to dam long. Charger sat 2 year's and could not drive it. Just to long.
I like the Watermelon paint, at first I thought it was the orginal 1 of 3 70's made.

Those 3rd gen wing cars just look so much more at home in that guise than the 2nd gens. I still think that in many ways the 71 represents the pinnacle of Charger development and had they introduced it in 69, it would be the car we all lust after. Dodge always arrived a little late to the party but better dressed.
QuoteThose 3rd gen wing cars just look so much more at home in that guise than the 2nd gens. I still think that in many ways the 71 represents the pinnacle of Charger development and had they introduced it in 69, it would be the car we all lust after
Yea rite :image_294343:
Really? If they had trumped GM for a change instead of following their lead and had the 71 out before the end of the musclecar era, do you think it might just be possible for it to have sold in greater numbers than it did? If it had, is not unreasonable to think the Dukes would have had one and everyone would be nutty about it? I don't think it's such a stretch myself.
not crazy about 3rd gens. i like them and respect the machine. but i dig the 2nd gen body shape, 1969 was a rebellious yr and the 71 charger always looked like my dads charger. i think 2nd gens look more bad ass. just my 2 cents. Rene
Well, don't read too much into my post. I'm bragging up 3rd gens and I'm driving a 1st gen but my heart lies with the 69 as well. It was my first automotive love a very long time ago and it will be my last. My opinion was formed many years before the Dukes drove one. I'm just currently between 69's.
My point was more a "what if" history theory.
I do think they look slicker as wing cars than the 69's though.
 :stirthepot: :icon_smile_big:
i dig 1st gen charger. i hang with my buddy Ernie he has a 66 charger, cool car. i use to have an amc marlin. i always thought they kinda look alike
I love that car!
i enjoyed my marlin. it was in rough shape and slow but it was my party mobile. i use to fill it full of my friends and go for long ride. Rene

Dave, my conjecture, and it's just that based on circumstantial evidence is that the Watermellon Charger started out as a FJ5 (Sublime) 1970 Charger R/T, white top/white interior, and being a 70, the front end was an easy conversion, I would think that being built in late 69 that perhaps the Daytona added parts were painted FJ5 to match the rest of the car.....now perhaps the car suffered an identity crisis with the newly released Superbirds in the same FJ5?....
The car did some time on the ISCA show circuit in late 69 early 70....I venture the F6 was added over the FJ5, so I would tend to think only the inside portion of the wing uprights and the horizontal would display F6?....just conjecture, we may never know?......but an interesting find your friend has there, perhaps he's best to wetsand the black off, if he's inclined to study what's underneath?
Mike
I wish I had taken the time and patience to carefully sand all the layers of paint off my wing, maybe we could have figured out which Nascar it came off of in 69

Joe,...the photo that was eventually made into a wall poster by the Chrysler photo studios was shot in Chrysler's Hamtramck rear holding yard, often where vehicles that were pulled off the line for "special" purposes were held, be it dealer specials, execs cars, promos, etc

Easy fellas...I just seen the wing and mentioned the paint, you could see it was white at one time too. I thought it was strange that it looked to have FJ5 as the base a the F6 on top of that. Obviously I was thinking of the Watermelon car.
I don't think we are going to solve all the mysteries overnight...stay tuned I will get some more info. It just may not be tonight or tomorrow.
Fire up the popcorn machine :popcrn: and have a beer

As mentioned my friend got the wing out of Michigan, he traded a repop wing and cash for it. Wing is going on his real Daytona...

Understood Dave, just saying it's worth investigating.
Let us know if you find out anything.
I just thought I would try and see what everyone thought on here as well.
For instance I was wondering what sense did it make with the wing painted FJ5 first, I could see the car painted over with the F6 but the wing would have been added after the fact.
If I find anything out I will post it up here. It would be awesome if the car was still around in some form. It really is a great looking machine.
Dave
What's the color of the over spray on the inside? Looks a little red...
I hope folks don't get too excited. I remember back in the mid to late 70s, wings would come off a car in the junk yard.
I bought a few back then for $75 -100. each, off cars that were rusted out and the fronts banged up beyond repair.
Being the nose on the 'watermelon car was leaded to the fenders, the rest may have all gone to the crusher without pulling the nose.

Dave, I don't know if you saw my earlier post regarding your pics?....I'll reiterate, I believe the car started off originally as a 70 Charger RT in FJ5 (Sublime) I'd like to believe that the base color was kept, the wing and nose added, and painted in FJ5, the F6 was then sprayed over the FJ5, either this was intentional?, an after thought? or to customize the car for the short tour of duty it did on the ISCA tour? who knows?....trust me, it's much easier to tape off the FJ5, and spray F6 over it,...I was almost tempted to go this route when I painted the Watermellon clone, as tapeing off the stripes and all the F6 exposed areas was twice the amount of work,....seeing how most cars were painted "back in the day", I was really tempted to paint/jamb the whole car in FJ5 (sublime), then tape off just the stripes, then paint the F6 like a "repaint" would have been done back in the day", but trying to explain an F6 car with Sublime/FJ5 painted engine compartment, trunk, and door jambs would have been daunting to all but the most intune to what it represented, besides the fact the car was already a rolling piece of fruit :icon_smile_big:
Mike
Thanks Mike, you would probably be the best person to ask as you must have done the research added to all your car building experience.
As I find any new info I will post it up on here.

Ok we talked to the owner of the car today...he still has it. We are going to have him send us the VIN. The fender tag is missing. He said the car has had a few owners, here's the kicker...it appears to have been originally FJ5 but its also a sunroof car :o He didn't think it was an R/T but a 500.
So it has some signs pointing towards the Watermelon car but others not so much. He thought it was a black interior car. The 1970 Charger has a similiar tail light panel as a 1969 car not like the pictured Watermelon car...anyway as I find out more I will post it up.

The purple Daytona was not a factory sunroof car to my knowledge. The window label Jerry had on display in the car in the mid 70s says so right on it. Add Daytona conversion package and add sunroof. I have a picture of it around here of it somewhere.

Dave
Most positive Dave, I took all available photos of the car, color, black and white, about 7 individual shots IIRC, blew each one up, and enhanced each one looking for any trace of a roof panel (I also sent photos out to a few guys that had the hardware/knowledge to "wash" distortion/shadows out of pics and re pix for definition), generally on the 69/70 B body sunroof panel the "fuzzy" 1/4" panel windlace would be black, which becomes pretty prominent on a white roof, I even assumed had it been omitted/removed making a panel harder to view, but any digital enhancements showed no trace of a factory type panel,....believe me, I've been studying those photos years before I built the car, I've studied every detail, reflection in the panels, ground, surrounding area, you name it.....sadly, i wish the car had, had a sunroof, I would have had no issue installing one!
mike
Sunroof lines are usually very prominent .....

So it has some signs pointing towards the Watermelon car but others not so much. He thought it was a black interior car. The 1970 Charger has a similiar tail light panel as a 1969 car not like the pictured Watermelon car...anyway as I find out more I will post it up.
I was using these pics as a guide:

Thanks for the response Dave,....while we know the Purple 70 Daytona was a sunroof car, the "Watermellon" 70 Daytona was not, unless someone added the sunroof after the fact?, you never know what has happened in the last 40+ years
The purple Daytona was not a factory sunroof car to my knowledge. The window label Jerry had on display in the car in the mid 70s says so right on it. Add Daytona conversion package and add sunroof. I have a picture of it around here of it somewhere.
Sean, agreed....the "docs" Jerry had indeed said add sunroof and Daytona package to the purple 70 R/T, IIRC he also had a dealer invoice stating.... "remove, clean spray glue from front seats"....from after the sunroof was installed
Mike
:smilielol: "remove, clean spray glue from front seats".... :smilielol: That's awesome.
One of the few really interesting, with something to be learned by those of us who don't know all the history, threads in years.

It's the Parsons Dodge dealer Invoice dated 3/3/70 for repairs, car showed 4000 miles at the time, and mentions the glue removal from the seats , most likely from the sunroof/vinyl roof install....along with the Daytona "package" added, this was after Jackson took the car to Speedweek at Daytona according to my notes, IIRC the initial repair was for carb tuning?

Are we sure the original Watermelon car didn't have a sunroof?
I looked over the original photos and concur - no sunroof.
The question is Dave, is the sunroof on the car in question a factory sunroof, or an aftermarket installation?

Joe all the "factory" sunroofs are "aftermarket", all were performed by ASC off line, a car could be also be retro fitted as a dealer done item later, plus ASC had authorized installation shops around the country, one could just drive to, and have an installation done, that would appear "factory"....but I know you may also mean an actual aftermarket unit that is not "factory" appearing,...I've gone to look at cars that people claim are "factory sunroof" cars, only to find an aftermarker pop up style glass panel :brickwall:
Mike
I just hope Dave sees it before the Black Suburbans get there! :icon_smile_big:
If it is a real 500 I would be interested in seeing it.
Thanks for all the help Mike. It seems like the car is worth a roadtrip anyway. There is no fender tag as mentioned. The car decodes as a 70 Charger R/T - U code so a 440 4bbl car.
I will keep you guys in the loop!
Dave

Understood Mike. I should have clarified what I meant by aftermarket. Unfortunately without a fender tag or build sheet, it would be tough to completely verify if it came with the car originally.
Of course if it's the "pop-up" type, it should be a no brainer... ;D
Love it ~ Looks awsome :drool5: :drool5: :drool5:

Mike was the original car pic snapped in Detroit , or somewhere in Michigan?
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Joe,...the photo that was eventually made into a wall poster by the Chrysler photo studios was shot in Chrysler's Hamtramck rear holding yard, often where vehicles that were pulled off the line for "special" purposes were held, be it dealer specials, execs cars, promos, etc
mike
And all the black & white photos were in a manilla file marked "McCurry's Car".
I know, I saw it.
They were the only thing in there...

I showed Bob McCurry copy's of those photos of the green 70 Daytona and told him that it said "McCurry's car" on the folder. He said he never saw the car or knew anything about it. Then he said that the Daytona was known as "My car" He went on about not building any Charger's at the Hamtramck Plant in 70 and the liabilities of building a 70 Daytona and why they didn't.. Pretty sharp for a guy that was uber high up at Dodge.
The first time I met Captain Crunch was at our local Lexus Dealership. I had the Daytona on the rack getting the tires balanced and McCurry walked out of Rin Rooney's office and he said. Hey, you got one of my cars. I asked him if he had a Daytona and he said. Yes, About 500 of them. :slap:
Another funny thing was Mr. McCurry wanted some Dodge Scat Pack stickers. I got him some and he put them on his 1/4 glass of his LS 400. He would get a new Lexus every 6 months and I would keep supplying him with the decals... I know....off subject but I thought it was funny.
Greg, I also got Bob to sign my air cleaner lid. He wrote, "The name of the game is win.....Bob McCurry" Sound familiar? :icon_smile_big: I gave him a copy of Frank Moriarty's book "SUPERCARS" Bob looked at the photo of him on your cars dash and said, "man, I've lost a lot of weight." Then I showed him the page with Baker and Glotzbach sitting on the wing and he pointed at Baker and said, "that guy drove me nuts, he would brake everything."
Ever see this story on Bob MC Curry

Good stuff! When I got the "Melontona" pics, the guy kept the folder they were in... Had I known 25 years later folks, including Bob himself, wouldn't believe it, well, I guess I messed up! Who would have known... Yeah - watch for that McCurry photo in the future in it's place of honor!! :2thumbs:

If you had seen the rough drafts of the McCurry interview that Randy and Wolfe had done for MCG on the 70 Tona mystery before his death...McCurry was flipping and flopping on what was what regarding his own facts and statements, one couldn't blame him, as he was up in age, poor health, and a LOT of things had transpired thru the decades for a man of his accomplishments to recollect a small period of time, esp a particular car, or cars
Mike
We're lucky he was at Dodge at the right time.

[/quote] :2thumbs: That is Awesome. When that is done. I have to show his very close personal friends Rin Rooney and Rueben Q here out west at the local Lexus Dealer. There is a picture on the wall there of McCurry leaning on my Daytona wing. IIRC Rin left Chrysler with Bob and the rest is Toyota history. Another McCurry note. About 5 months before he passed he said he had a few boxes of mementos and photos from his years at Chrysler. He said he had not opened them since he left. Bob said I could have them after he went through them and would bring them to CA when he came out for the winter. Never happened. :brickwall: His summer home was in Rehoboth Beach Delaware. I have a picture of him here somewhere wearing big rabbit ears at a party.
