Day 1 -...Started 'glassing up my fiberglass air grabber hood mold to graft onto my 'glass S Bird hood and to later serve as a template for a hand fabbed steel hood and nosecone and front fender 'glassing as plugs/bucks for steel panels...as I build the bird.

I heard there's an island somewhere where they still use shells as currancy. Maybe we should all move there.

if someone would produce a air grabber hood for a Superbird i think my original hood would be wrapped up in a blanket and put in the attic. :scratchchin:

ha ha!! that's funny. I'm serious though. Saw it on a doco about a year ago. Apparently it's the Pacific Islands. Value depends on the type of shell.

I don't think I agree with that really.  I'm one of the least patient people you will ever meet but if there is something I enjoy or something I want to learn I can channel the anxiousness into that.

That is TRULY a work of ART! You Sir are an Artist extraordinaire!  One might say a Don-atello or a Leonardo Don Vinci!          All kidding aside........ I would love to watch you work your artistry. The link to the youtube video says it's "private" Do you have any shared video of your art craft?

Thanx. This Bird build is all steel..so far. I set aside the 'glass hood work for now .Since I don't have a donor 70 coronet hood I opted to do the reverse of what most do and am using a steel 70 RR hood to convert to a superbird hood and a air grabber hood too. The slope of the hoods are the same up until the S bird bead addition however the coronet hood edges taper in approx 1" at the front more so than the RR hood so have to a pie slice sliver out of the edges to match the coronet fenders etc.

Now I'll be sloping down the front of the hood center like Stu did then adding a hand fabbed peaked center section then adding the hood extension

Why are people wanting to go away from glass on these? What's the draw to having them steel?

Steel scoops wont warp or crack. And you can lean on them

My concern is weight, the lighter the better, so whichever one weighs less is my choice!

I'll weigh my next completed steel wing...overall not that heavy at all and no where near as heavy as a OEM wing.

I rolled out a aluminum - almost 1/8" thick ' tona fender scoop....then sanded it with 600 grit...which looked very cool too...but then polished it-
(http://img12.imageshack.us/img12/7361/daytonafenderscoops006.jpg)
weight on this scoop is about the same as the ' glass scoop.

Don, the hood that Tom made for my Black Ice bird was built using an original 70 Roadrunner air grabber hood that he grafted the front of the bird hood onto. Remember, this was done many years ago when no one thought anything of cutting up original parts. He did an excellent job. Looks and operates like a factory part. I have a regular style Superbird hood but would never take this one off. I like it too much.

Larry,
using the RR hood is not as 'easy ' as it looks. The RR hood at cowl is approx. 52 and 3/4" wide and stays that width all the way while the Coronet hood is 52.5" at cowl and narrows down at the front before the insert to 51 and 3/8" so if Tom did indeed use a RR hood he would have had to have taken a narrow pie slice out along each edge of the RR hood to match the coronet/sbird fenders along with matching the hood drop insert edges etc....would be easier to convert a coronet hood but I don't have one...so the RR hood it is. Where is Tom these days?

He told me that it definitely wasn't easy altering the roadrunner hood. He added inner stiffeners on both sides but I can't tell they're there. The hood is definitely heavy. He put fiberglass hood springs inside the stock springs.

I never understood why Ma Mopar stamped offset speaker holes on the rear shelf- I finally got round to 'correcting' that, well at least my 6x9's will match.  :icon_smile_big:

Chrysler didn't offer two speakers for the rear - just a single speaker in the package tray, even if you ordered the R22 AM with stereo tape player.  Sales Code R31 just got you one rear speaker.  If I'm not mistaken, the second hole was for intake air to feed the rear defrost (which exited out the slot in the center).

I thought it was widely understood that they couldn't decide if they wanted tire clearance or air exhaustion so they went with both! :D
