Title: Happy Super Bowl Sunday
Post by: 41husk on February 05, 2016, 09:22:42 AM
Super Bowl Sunday is going to be a great day and this has nothing to do with Football and everything to do with aero cars!  Got the call my body and paint guy is ready for me to deliver my C500.  I have been waiting patiently, well not so much, for over a year.  I hope to provide lots of pics as I go, but I may need Stu to help me post them!

Apparently AMD has them, but rather expensive............ Man, I hope the ones that were on it are OK....  :o

Yes, AMD makes the Daytona/500 rear window trim but I think its $900. Looks like your at the same progress as I am with my 500, Just cleaned up the Engine bay 2 weeks ago, I just installed the Transmission and getting ready for the motor. Good luck and hope to see some 500's this summer!

Not sure how your front suspension is but now would be a good time to rebuild it. Did mine when the drivetrain was out, did not cost as much as I thought it would.

I found them on ebay.  The good folks at Dixie restoration called AMD for me and found that the skins were on back order.  I found it on ebaqy (Tamaraz raked me over the coals)but will go back and order some stuff from Dixie just because they were so easy to deal with  Tamaraz could learn something from the Dixie folks! On another note, my paint and body guy had a heart attack Sunday night.  He thinks he is coming home today but will be ooc for a bit :brickwall: He is only 43 :shruggy:

Everything I have ever seen Allen was close to a semi-gloss... Something like a Chassis Black if I recall correctly...

Something like this.. I'm sure it isn't exactly to the level of Geno's Daytona or John's Bird..

Well got the front and back glass pulled.  The windshield cracked during removal, but the rear came out fine.  The bottom track of the rear window is a mess and will need new metal.  Im cleaning the trim up now and will clean the dash and repaint that area soon.  I sent some pics to Stuart and I am hopeful he can post on this thread.  It looks like I am going to need a new gear box :slap: :brickwall:

Is the case cracked? I have rebuilt a lot of power steering boxes here locally and they were like new when I got them back.. New gaskets, new bearings, etc...  There has to be someone in the St. Louis area that can do that... The job for me was about $125 and best part, I get to keep the original box ( not to say the one in the 500 is, but at least you sort of know the history )..

Depends on the application, but for Allen's car you're right on the money.  Most '69 B-body 440's did indeed get the 18.5" diameter 2863216, but 440 + manual trans + 3.54 gears got the 18.0" diameter 2863215 fan installed (those same cars also got the puny 2949055 2-core radiator too   :o )

well, my wheel houses and Drivers quarter skin came in yesterday.  I went to drop them off and found that the new passenger side door jam was welded in and the passenger side quarter skin was in place  before who ever put the quarter on did not fit it to the door so the door appeared to be a little open when it was fully shut, but no more.  unfortunately my my camera battery was dead.  so I will try to go over and get some pics tonight :2thumbs:

I always hated that fit..... Good to go Allen...........

Yes the blue Jam provided helped, but the quarter installation was the big fit problem.  It will have new trunk floor, wheel houses quarter skins, lower back window frame and back valance end caps.  Just creeping along but it is getting done

Trying to get the detailing on the 440 done.  Is the air cleaner a crinkle paint?  Is the throttle linkage bracket and return spring bracket, and coil bracket semi flat black or orange like the block? Thanks!

1. The throttle return spring bracket is orange, painted when the motor is.. But, make sure you have the negative battery cable install first, then paint.
2. Rear throttle bracket is to be installed first, then painted with the motor
3. The coil bracket is NOT painted.. it is left natural...

The second picture is more accurate with the Dual-Point Prestolite since it is a 4speed car and the wiper motor is a 68-earlier version, so don't use these pictures as reference for that...

If it was the right "wow" car for me.. Granted, my Daytona has a Hemi in it, but I would like to have an original "j" code '69 to compliment the Daytona. The Daytona was always a "dream car" of mine, something I thought would never be attainable as a young guy, so I set my realistic goals on a '69 Hemi Charger R/T 4speed..  Ironic as it is, of all the Charger pedigrees I've owned, a '69 Charger R/T is the one that has eluded me...  :nana:

Nice work Husk!

You made a great decision going B5 over Y2 hearing aid yukky yellow lol... :smilielol:

Good idea taking the grille frame top plate off.
I spent ages getting my frame out and broke a few bits and bobs.
Then I got carried away and took the whole front end off too... :slap:
I must learn to leave stuff alone lol.

I'm glad you took the B5 plunge and not me in the end.
I'm more than happy with my F8 C500.

Best wishes 5J

Hi Sublime,

The headlight brackets were standard 68 Coronet buckets that are welded into the fenders.
Creative were supplied with them to which they made their own bracketry to fit them to the Charger grille.

Did they leave all the Charger buckets in place and just mount these on top ?

Hi Troy.
Sorry to steal your lovely pictures!
They were very helpful when I restored my C500 grille and headlight pods.
If you look closely at the right hand pod outer edge, there are TWO small holes that mount to the inner fender flare.
I believe that Dayclona makes the EIGHT mounting brackets for the centre section.
If you down from above, the 68 coronet grille follows the shape of the top plate fairly closely too.
It sticks out approx ONE INCH to tuch in under the hood.

You need to knock-up some vertical bars too!

Thank's Stu!  I wanted to get much more done but kept running into problems :brickwall: Bagged and tagged all the bolts but I couldnt find the Motor mount bolts and had to run to the hardware store.  Then we learned The old engine had a 10 inch flex plate and my new torgue converter needed a 11 inch plate.  No parts stores had it but a Mopar friend about 40 miles from me had one he not only donated to the cause but drove and met me half way to deliver   We got the engine and trans installed, gas tank painted, rust inhibitor sprayed on all fresh welds and new sheet metal, cleaned and painted the fan shroud, and loaded and moved the old 440 back to my shop.  Still much to do.  Install radiator, starter, trans cooling lines, carb, and plug in all electric.  She is coming along and I should have her back on the road in the spring :2thumbs:

This is what I am confused about.. On page two of this thread you started, there's a picture of someone taking the motor out and the proper valve covers are clearly seen with the proper breather and hose connected to the air cleaner.... Hope no one "took" them.....

No, you have the later model versions..... 1970 and up.. If you look close at the pictures I posted, there are now wide spark plug wire brackets attached to the valve covers.. The valve covers you have on the car are for something like a '73 or '74 on up...  I think someone switch them out... The valve covers on that motor I have never owned... And I'm fairly confident the valve covers that were on the motor when I traded it to you were the proper ones....

You know me, Mr. Anal-in-detail..

I hope I'm wrong.....

Allen,
there are two holes in the floor pan right under the accelerator pivot attached to the firewall.... It is obvious. I am assuming that the holes were drilled in the new pans?

You can see the two holes in this image from my Superbird..  Usually you will need to cut a section out of the carpet foot pad in order for the pedal to fit properly. There is a Styrofoam gasket between the pedal and floor pan. You can see the picture I got off the internet, the position of the pedal base relative to the foot pad on the carpet.... The proper retaining nuts do have a captive star-lockwasher.

1. Get the carpet in..
2. find and stick an all or something through the carpet pad from underneath to mark your hole positions from inside ( you should see two holes in the footpad ). Then, sort of measure the dimensions of the pedal base.. It is the part of the pedal base that sticks down. The top of the pedal base covers the hole and overlaps the foot pad. It should and will be snug. Don't forget the pedal base gasket.
3. then attach the two nuts from underneath and voila, done.......

Thanks Geno,  Does anyone have a pic on how the gas pedal is installed.  The car did not have one, I bought a new one and don't see how it can be installed :brickwall:

Allen,
there are two holes in the floor pan right under the accelerator pivot attached to the firewall....

How does the pedal connect to the rod?

How does the pedal connect to the rod?

Allen.. The pedal just leans on it.. It is not physically connected.. It is just physically touching........ That is why the throttle mechanism attached to the firewall has a roller on the end of the rod. Another image "googled". Here, you can see the other white Styrofoam gasket that goes behind the throttle pedal assemble attached to the firewall.

Also, these are the types of nuts used underneath..  this image is of a complete kit. I'm just posting this to show you the type of nut with the captive star lock-washer

is this a country song , only thing missing is someone stole his pick up truck

Gene, Do you have these decals on your Daytona?

Hey Allen, sorry for the delay, as I did not see your question until now.

The Sure-Grip decals were not used in '69.

Daytonas usually used two tire pressure decals (Creative applied a second one directly over the "original" tire pressure decal from Hamtramck), but I'm not sure about C500s... they probably have the Hamtramck decal only.  T.P. decals would have been applied to the driver's side door jamb / B-pillar, not too far below the door striker.

The safety standards decal would be applied to the A-pillar (above the door switch, readable from inside the car IIRC).  You might try adding a light film of oil/grease to your door seal where it makes contact with this decal.  I've had a couple of these decals ruined by ill-fitting, very stiff seals -- especially the repop door seals.

I wouldn't bother with the red warning/regulator tag, which apparently went on at least some year/model Alternators.  I haven't seen them used on an OE '69 B-body resto myself.  We didn't use one on my car, I do know that.

Hope this helps.

Gene

churp churp churp yes I do.  Coming home I stopped got gas after a few gallons of gas it started leaking gas.  I put it on the lift and have a steel line coming fro the tank with the supply line that stops just below the fuel pump with the supply line.  I did not have that hooked to anything and it was running out pretty steady.  The supply line goes from the frame to a filter then to the fuel pump.  I believe I am supposed to have a vapor separator there?  any help is that correct?

Allen,
Not sure I understand.. But:
1. Main fuel line runs from sending unit, rubber hose out by the tank into steel line, then steel line runs to the front framerail on the passenger side. Then, should be a rubber line that runs to the fuel vapor separator that is attached to the fuel pump. Now, if you or I put a fuel filter, it is probably between the fuel line end on the framerail and separator. From the separator, you have a rubber hose which connects to the steel line running up the motor behind the alternator eventually going to the carb.

2. The fuel vapor line again runs the exact routing as the main fuel line. Then there is a rubber hose that runs to the small nipple on the bottom of the fuel vapor separator.

You mention it is leaking fuel? Look at both the fuel inlet tube seal and the sending unit if it is in the back. If I recall, I put a new tank in it. I know the original was hosed and replaced it......

I have no seperator on this.  Just a single inlet to a filter.  I have ordered a separator that should solve it.

Thanks.  Troy there are two lines running down the passenger frame rail.  Since there was no vapor seperator, and the car did not leak fuel until after I had it out on the road.  That being said I am assuming the second or vapor return line was plugged and that came loose on the drive?  I have a vapor seperator on the way and I am hoping that takes care of the issue.
