Title: New Guy in San Antonio
Post by: Project68 on October 10, 2014, 04:34:47 PM
Hello Everyone,

My name is John and I inherited my uncles 1968 Charger.  Story goes....he bought it when he was a senior in high school in 1977.  He was racing some guy and the engine started to overheat, so he pulled into a gas station to add water but the engine died and it would not start.  So, he pulled the engine out (a 383) and got the motor rebuilt but never got around to putting the car back together.  It has been sitting at my grandfathers property in a barn for over 30 years.  He told me I could have it, so I flew to CA and rented a U-haul trailer and brought it to TX.  The car did not come with any keys, so I had to have a locksmith make me a set.  Got the trunk open and found some parts I will need later on.  Surprisingly, I found the build sheet in the back seat.

Cool story John, a free Charger?  Sweet deal, hah.  That car is even dirtier than mine!

Best wish of luck with it, and stick around these forums.  This is a very helpful community.  :)

P.S. More pics would be a joy!  Start a thread when you're ready to log your work on it.

What a score!!  A free Charger and it really is a "barn find".   Take lots of pics during the restoration you could literally write a book with this one.  Welcome to the site.

Thanks everyone.   I will start a progress thread when I start working on it.  As far as the options,  would posting the build sheet work?.  I am learning about this car as I go along,  so you all could help me more than I can help out by deciphering the build sheet or fender tag. I know it is automatic with a 383 and came with air conditioning.   It was originally white and had a black vinyl top.

Welcome here and congratulations on something that most people only dream about! Looks to have been painted blue sometime in the past. If you can post a larger picture of the build sheet, there are numerous people here that could tell you everything you need to know about the Charger!

Congrats on your great luck and stay here a while.  By the way, I live in a northern suburb of Houston and have a daughter and her family  that lives in NW San Antonio.

Thanks.  You are right, it was originally white and painted blue.  When my uncle bought it, it was already painted blue.  It would be great to meet you if you come down this way.  I will post the build sheet and let those with the knowledge tell me what I have.

Its a shame the front end is banged up on the passenger corner.  How's the grille?  As you can imagine that stuff will be expensive.  I see the bumper's removed so I'm thinking that's probably not a good sign...  :'(   On the positive side, it looks like a 4bbl dual snorkel air cleaner in the trunk.  :scope:  It would be nice to have a factory 383 4bbl car with a/c!

I am posting the build sheet I found behind the seat a few days ago along.  The transmission shifter is in a long console in the middle of bucket seats.  My Uncle said the car had a 383 engine, he thought it was a high performance 383 but I don't know how to validate the engine performance size.

The grille is banged up bad on the passenger corner. But, my uncle got an extra grille and front bumper from a 68 that was headed to the crusher years ago, so I have them to use.  Look at the attached picture, you will see the parts on the hood.

Thanks for the information.   There is a fender tag, it is pretty rusted over though.  I will have to take a wire brush or steel wool to clean it up to read what is on it.

Yes,  he was smart to buy them.  When he bought the car, the fender was already damaged. He knew someone who was sending his Charger to the crusher, so he asked to buy the parts.

I was hoping a lot of the engine parts would be in the trunk since they were not in the barn.  I had to wait until the locksmith got the trunk open to see what was in there.....if anything.  I was pleasantly surprised.

Here is the fender tag....needs to be cleaned up some more.  Any suggestions on how to clean the tag up without destroying it?  I was going to use a soft wire brush and maybe some steel wool.

The engine has been on this stand in my grandfather garage along with the car for over 30 years.   I took some pictures of the engine block.  Can someone help me out decoding the engine numbers.  My uncle says he thinks it is a matching numbers car because be does not believe the previous owner swapped out the motor or transmission.

Thanks

soak that fender tag in some Evapo-rust.  :yesnod:  Don't use a wire brush or anything other abrasive because it will wear the numbers down!

The scheduled production date of your car is 104....1 meaning January 1968, and 04 meaning the 4th.  Its extremely likely you have the original numbers matching engine with the stamping date of 12-11-1967.  You still need to verify the serial number of the block matches the VIN.  You'll need to look at the passenger side of the engine block, just above the oil pan lip. You should see the last 8 digits of the VIN.

started in '68, and yes the transmission should be the same way. Its also on the bottom edge pain rail (just above the pan) long number usually starts with PK for Kokomo Plant.  Not sure of which side its on I think left.

I thought '68 was stamped on the top/rear of the block next to the top of the bell housing ?

It's late, sorry about that mistake but you're right...!!!  The raised pad on the side of bell housing is where the vin stamping will be - on the passenger side.

The area above the pan rail on the drivers side has the transmission part number (PK), date code, build sequence number, etc.

I dug around and discovered the partial vin stamping may not always be found in the same spot on 1968 transmissions. If the raised boss is not found on the passenger side of your trans casting (on the bell itself), look around the edge of the bell where it mounts to the engine block.

Wow, sitting in one spot for what, 30+ years, and the dirt and dust that has accumulated in those years, lets you think it was somewhat forgotten. Bet you find the keys in the car somewhere or hanging on a nail in the barn. Your uncle may had not needed to carry them with him after the motor was out, but would want them close by the car. :Twocents:
My keys where still in the ignition switch for 27 years.
I'm real happy you were given the Charger. I do not think any of my Nephews would be interested in my Charger.
Dang, thirty years and the antenna is not even snapped off. :2thumbs:

Interesting, no oil pressure sending unit hole  :shruggy:  I sure don't see anything.

Congrats, what a perfect way to get a complete charger. I would bet by the
date on the block it is the original 383.

Your car is the first year and month for mandatory shoulder belts as well.

Get a picture of the ID engine pad, it is just in front of the passenger side head on the block. Its
a machined surface, and should say D 383 and a few other numbers.

This is where the numbers are pressed into the bell housing area on the back of the block and trany.
Not all 383's I have seen have these numbers.

I think they call that patina. Even cars that need a total restoration and lots of body work still go for a few thousand dollars. You'll really enjoy it when it is all done and people actually wave at you when you drive down the street or give you the thumbs up.

Welcome to the site. You will find everything you need on this site. What part of San Antonio do you live? I as well live in SA 281 and tpc area.

I live off of TPC and Evans...Fox Grove Community.
Crazy we are neighbors I live in bulverde village off bulverde rd.

Like Abe1968 said yes there is the Ancira mopar show this Saturday.  Unfortunately I have to work this weekend and won't be able to attend. I recommend going to get ideas flowing for your new project. Where do you have it stored? Are you going to be working on it from your house?

I am planning on going.  I won't be working on it at my house...no room in the 2 car garage.   I have some property I bought in Bulverde with plenty of workshop space.

This is where the numbers are pressed into the bell housing area on the back of the block and trany.
Not all 383's I have seen have these numbers.

Dan

Thanks guys for all the help locating the area...so after a little wire brushing I came up with the attached pictures.  The stamping on the engine block is not as clear compared to the softer metal on the transmission.  It is hard to make out the B on the engine, but I think it is safe to say that the numbers match my VIN.  I still need to clean the barn dust off engine.  Anyone know of a reputable engine/transmission re-builder in the San Antonio area?

You will find a lot of info at the Ancira Mopar show this weekend but, I had my some of my engine work done at kendricks performance not all cause me and a buddy put it together 210-337-0838. As far as the trany maybe someone else can make a recommendation. So....I was looking the car over trying to get an idea of how much body work I am going to have to do.  Obviously, the fender needs replacing along with the lower valance.  The right rear quarter panel need some work or replacement, I'm not sure.  The area around the back window has me concerned as there are multiple pin-holes. Any ideas on how to tackle the rear window would be appreciated.  I am sure Chargers with worse rust have been salvaged.

Thanks!

AMD has the panel you need to make a nice patch.

http://www.autometaldirect.com/amd-68-70-charger-deck-filler-panel-p-1041.html

....or get an experienced metal fabricator to hand form a section and weld it in.

They've got your front fender too. :icon_smile_wink:

You may want to remove the moldings as well as the window to get a better idea. For sure like TUFCAT said that with AMD you will be able to find what you need. On mine I had to replace the deck lid as well as the sail panels on each side of the window. Besides the rust my window channels were shot where the glass sat so it was a must.

Dan

Dan,
Attached is  picture of the ID engine pad.  What does it mean?

Thanks!

So....I definitely have some work to do in the interior.  It will look much better when I wipe it all down and get the dust and spiderwebs removed, but the seats definitely need to be upholstered and new headliner.  The center console is cracked at the end, I bet that's pricey to replace.  Found the steering wheel in the trunk.  It has some kind of fake wood grain on it.

Interesting how the top back of the console looks blue   :shruggy:  must be the picture. A new console is about $250.00 just for the new
plastic shell.

The factory came with simulated wood grain three spoke wheel.

It does have a bluish tint to it at the top rear.  Oxidation or wear I suppose.  Where can I get a new plastic shell from?

Just read your thread.  GREAT find ... or gift I guess!  Does look really nice to start with.  I would save every bit of original metal you can.  Tony's Parts has a nice console.  I have one in my car and it fit real nice and looks correct.  If you have your radio looked at (re-done) I'd suggest Retro Radio in PA.  They went thru mine and did a conversion to FM but it also has the connections on the back for an ipod/mp3.  Very nice people to deal with.

Anyway, great car!  I'd take it to some shows with all the dust and dirt on it that's left.  Seems like all the barn finds always attract more attention than the restored cars.

These are the '68 steering wheels available.  The one on the right sounds like what you've got, which is the best one to have.  I'm not finding the code 12X to link to that steering wheel, but in Mopar speak 'X' is the color code for black which would be the center.

p.s.  First 7 images link to the Charger ordering info, presumably the '573 Sports Type' / woodgrain steering wheel = 12x to the factory, whereas 'x' = color and 'X' (capitalized) = black.

Hey guys,
It has been a while since my last post and I have not been able to do any work on my Charger.  But, the time is near to start working on it.

I was wondering if anyone had any recommendations on engine, transmission and differential rebuild shops in San Antonio.

There is a lot of work that needs to be done that I do not have the equipment for.  Does anyone have any recommendation on reputable restoration/body shops in the San Antonio area?  My thought is to have the bodywork done and then put the car back together myself.  This is my first big project so any recommendations are appreciated.

Thanks

John

Dave in Houston does really good body work, but I'm not sure of his current status...last I knew I think he had a shop and might have gotten a Roadrunner if memory serves correct.  I'm sure others will remember and can possibly link you to his site, or contact info if he is still in the area and taking on jobs.

If you can't come up with anything closer to San Antonio, I know of a great Mopar based machine shop up here in the Amarillo area, D&L Automotive Machine & Race Engines.  Let me know if you need more info.

It has been almost 20 years since I moved  to the Fort Worth area from San Antonio, so I doubt my 20 year old recommendations would do you any good.  Instead, would recommend getting in contact with the Mopar Muscle Club of San Antonio, in particular Wes Pieper, or Paul Gaspard...

http://www.moparmuscleclub-sa.org/

Do your homework, and get multiple recommendations AND written clear estimates for any planned work... my last body shop nightmare cost me $19,043.18 for practically no usable work...  a practiced liar with an "Aw Shucks" gift of gab, and I fell for it!  :icon_smile_blackeye:
