Title: speedometer issues
Post by: NHCharger on December 24, 2023, 07:39:13 PM
Several years ago the speedo cable came unclipped and laid over against a very hot header pipe. since then the odometer still works but the speedo needle bounces all over the place and will read 30-50 mph over the actual speed. Sometimes when I come to a complete stop it still reads 15-20. Assuming I broke/damaged the gear drive for the speedo needle. what is that part called and where can I source one? Every time I search for speedometer gear or pinion the speedo gear in the tranny comes up. Thanks.

The speedometer has no gears, but just the odometer. The speedo doesn't have a direct conection with the speedo cable. If the needle doesn't returns to zero, the problem is MOSTLY SURE the bushing for the needle shaft which came loose/cracked and the return spring is not making its job. The speedo looses the reading, but the odometer keeps working correctly. Time to send to rebuilt OR make it yourself.

I have covered this rebuilt job made by myself on several threads and boards, however, just two days ago it floated again on my notifications section at FBBO because eomebody replied.

I made a small diagram on paint long tame ago about how is that bushing and makes two jobs at the same time, centering the needle shaft and holdding the return spring. Will search and post.
