Title: Pete Hamilton has Passed Away
Post by: Aero426 on March 21, 2017, 07:44:39 PM
Former IMSA and Trans-Am driver Dorsey Schroeder has reported that Pete Hamilton passed away today.   Dorsey has a place on Big Pine Key in Florida, and Pete was a former neighbor.   Sad news. More to come, I am sure.

His 1970 Daytona 500 win was cool. The car was set up with a little downforce - wing tilted and the front had the "super spoiler" set up.

Sit back and enjoy...  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4TlXmZJtEB0

times 2.

For the younger folks, Pete had a short career, from 1968 to 1973.  Retired at age 30 due to neck injuries, but he had a fine racing "career" and it ended too soon.

Awarded Rookie of the Year in 1968, he had a 5 and 1/2 year run in NASCAR, with 4 wins and 26 top 5 finishes out of 64 races.  26 out of 64.  Wow.

RIP.

In the early 1990's I called Pete's business near Atlanta, seeking an autograph. I hoped to have him sign a Stock Car Racing magazine for me. I left a message on the answering machine, and the next day Pete himself called me back. He was kind enough to agree to sign the magazine if it was sent to him. In addition, he spent several minutes speaking with me. Getting a call from the Daytona 500 winning Superbird driver has always been a particularly special winged car memory for me. I still have the magazine of course; it's one of my most valued mementos and even more so now.

Pete was also gracious enough to speak with me at the Talladega meet in 1994.

RIP, Peter Goodwill Hamilton.

Sad news indeed.  Pete was a very humble, sincere man.  I had breakfast with him at 'dega in 94. A memory I'll never forget.
RIP  :'(
