Look at the perfect hood to fender alignment on the Challenger...stuff we obsess about nowadays wasn't perfect when these cars were new!

As weird as it will sound, I almost enjoy it when a small mechanical issue crops up on a road trip. I feel like a boss when I do some quickie fix and get back on the road like nothing happened.

Quote from: Mytur Binsdirti on Yesterday at 04:53:13 AM40 years ago, I drove my 68 hemi Charger all over the place.
I can't imagine making that trip today in the middle of the summer with no a/c, hot vinyl seats, wind blast (from all the windows open), crappy radio, etc.

For me, years of construction conditioned me to just dealing with the elements.
Wind, rain, noise and dust don't bother me.
I can be more comfortable in a late model car for trips, I'll admit that.
It doesn't stop me from enjoying the classics for distance drives. I'll jump into the cars and sweat, I'll deal with the road noise, the faint smell of gasoline, the vibrations and 10-15 mpg. So what...? This is how these cars were and to me, it is part of the experience. You can improve on them with A/C and sound deadening but I hesitate to adopt a fully modern approach to the old car. It sounds good to essentially put a classic skin over a late model drivetrain and chassis but then you'd lose the essence of the car. You'd have an appliance with a fancy wrapper.
Late model engines? Sure.
Aftermarket A/C ? Absolutely.
Some guys eliminate the vent windows or run quiet exhaust systems. No thanks! To me, the sounds are part of the experience of these classics!

Quote from: Kern Dog on May 01, 2024, 01:24:25 PMWhat happened that time?

They were harassed & threatened by the Amish, they're dangerous people.

Actually they were real nice. We were running down the interstate on our way home and needed gas. The 500ci engine likes lots of gasoline! Anyways, the station turned out to be a further off the interstate then I had thought and we were passing Amish buggy's and their farms. Made it to the station which only had 2 pumps and maybe 5 Amish horse & buggies and a couple of cars. I filled her up. Went to start the Charger up and the starter did nothing. No sounds, nothing. Gauges worked and lights worked. Thought the starter might have an issue and crawled under the car to check it out. That's when a nice Amish couple stopped by to see if everything as okay. During our conversation it dawned on me that maybe there was battery connection issue. I pulled both cables off, cleaned what I could and reinstalled. Starter worked as it should and we were off again.

Good topic Kern, been thinking about this as my car will be ready to drive in a few days. In my 20's I drove it as just a car (cool car) didn't hesitate to do long drives at all. I drove with a non-working fuel gauge, bald tires, front end issues, etc. Now the car is basically going to be all new and I am a little concerned. I'm now in my late 50's so lets see.

My uncle introduced me to one of his old friends that had a 68 Charger back in the 80's.  This was the only pic he had of it.  Check out those side pipes!!

The furthest I drove my car was about a 150 mile round trip from NE Mass down to Rhode Island for a Mopar only show. That was over 20 years ago before I rebuilt the car.

I was in my late 20s at the time and should have known better to drive all the way there with no spare tire and then decide it was a good idea to enter a burnout contest.. luckily I didnt win, that guy blew a tire off  :icon_smile_big:

I finished the resto on my Charger around 2018 and have put less than 2k miles on it since then. I drive it alot, just not very far.

My Charger acts as my therapist at times. I work from home and sometimes when the stress level is at 11, Ill go for a quick spin around town, do a couple of 1 -2 shifts, get sideways a bit and all is right in the world again.

It is not as valuable as a Superbird or other Chargers on this site but It still have no worries taking it on errands, getting my haircut, going to Home Depot or whatever. I built this car TO drive it, not to bring to shows and sit next to it in a chair.
