Title: Trunk divider? (2nd gen.)
Post by: b5blue on April 28, 2016, 08:14:59 AM
What's it made out of ? (Lead?) Shipping costs more than the part, I guess it's so wide!  I'm thinking of just buying a sheet of "hardboard" and making my own as my 70 is a driver anyway.
Anyone done something similar/better? How thick is a "real" one? I'm getting ready to redo my interior and install A/C so want to block off trunk.  :scratchchin:

Making your own should work just fine. It's just a piece of cardboard that covers about 90% of the hole. Should be easy to fabricate as well. I'm assuming, of course, that it's the same on the 70 as it is on my 69.

I have my old one, it's all beat up, some tears and holes.  I plan to look around for some suitable material and use the old one as a pattern to make my own.  I wouldn't think it's hard at all.  Probably the hardest thing will finding a material that I like.

Any item like the seat divider, package tray, molded hood pad are all shipped via the oversize dimensions as dictated by the shippers whether it be Fed X or UPS.  That is why I always suggest to my customers if possible to pick these items up at the shows.  These items weigh next to nothing, but hood pads and package trays can be extremely fragile and must be packed to prevent possible damage.  If you have a large upholstry shop near by that does a good bit of automotive work, check with them.  They may possibly carry the backing board that some use for door panels.  The only problem is that the 68 to 70 B-Body seat divider is the largest seat divider that I carry and most door panel board is not large enough.  The cheapest route is to find a large refrigerator box and cut it out and then spray it a semi flat black.

When I bought my trunk divider from Legendary, it was only $16 at the time.  I bought all the other interior upholstery at the time (seat covers, carpet, headliner, vinyl top, bucket seat inserts, package tray, etc.)  The shipping was $125!!! It still hurts.

I wouldn't call it free at $20 more in price than you can buy it from Legendary for $28.

I made mine out of Masonite. Used the original as a pattern. One sheet was enough to do 2 cars.

Having never seen one much less installed one is thickness an issue? I work in logistics so have cardboard up the wazoo!  Weird about the size/shipping but I get it. Jack's has them for about 20 bucks but said shipping 35 and only UPS will ship them. I can make one.  :2thumbs:

I checked it out, shipping to me was $28.  It started out as $9 shipping but when you get to checkout the "oversize" charge gets added.  Item $28 , so total was $56.  Still high for a piece of fiber board.  Personally, I'd just make one.  All it really does it cut down on sound from the trunk area.

Agreed rt, I was already ordering a dash pad from Legendary so I figured with that length already in the mix I ordered a firewall insulation kit, package tray and trunk divider so they all share in the shipping costs, which they haven't got back to me with yet.

And just got a confirmation from Legendary and they discounted my order for the $154 that the shipping cost is !!  :2thumbs: A 12% discount. So I just got my trunk divider for 28 bucks.  :yesnod:

That's decent. I would do that.  And tell us how the dash pad looks, well bonded, studs in the right place, stitching, curious minds want to know.

Hopefully it has the same detail as my original, they assure me that their dash pad matches an original B Body that they have in their warehouse. Should know next week I guess. Can't be worse than the POS I got a month ago from others, and sent back, that wasn't even close! I'm talking just the long pad across the top, all my others are in good condition and my dash pad had one crack on the underside above the glove box door pretty much out of sight, but I figured I'm already this far in why stop.  :P

Hi Peter! There is a picture of one in the link. It goes side to side so big as the back seat.  :2thumbs:

Well scratch that "next week" idea, asked today if my ordered had shipped and they told me 8 weeks! I won't even be here in 8 weeks, I leave in about 2 to open our flyin camp and won't be back full time until October.  :brickwall: Now to find someone in town to take my shipment and pay the customs fees when it does ship.

Yah, sure glad I wasn't expecting to do any car shows this summer.
