Title: RM23U0A170221... The San Antonio Express works it's way to the Starting Line...
Post by: xs29j8Bullitt on September 22, 2011, 11:47:14 AM
I have started preparing the FY1 440 4Spd Superbird that I own to possibly be the next restoration project that depletes my life savings...  the "triple black" Charger being another prime candidate for the next money pit as well.  Either way, I need to re-assemble the 'Bird and other future project cars to verify that all parts are on hand prior to starting the restoration.

Three days ago I tracked down the original owner of the Superbird, and spoke briefly with him for the first time since about 1983.  Many years ago he had moved 1600+ miles from San Antonio, and having a name that he shared with 673 other Americans did not help matters!  He believes that he still has some small parts, purchase paperwork, photos, racing trophies, and other material related to the car.

Also, I have begun to find evidence about the car's early history that had been described to me by a former employee of OR Mitchell Chrysler Plymouth, the selling dealership.  So far only a hint about it's use in the First Annual San Antonio International Car Show... a lot more research will be required.  But it's long wait on the dealer lot has been confirmed by a more than week long advertising blitz starting on December 31, 1970... after a full year on OR Mitchell's lot.  It still took another three months to sell, finally selling on March 3rd based on the original title application.

I have tentatively named the Superbird the "San Antonio Express" based on the SA newspaper that it was first advertised in, plus the meaning of "Express" as sometimes used in race car names... and it's apparent racing history (Drag or SCCA or ???).  More pics & info as I uncover the material... grab a bag...  :popcrn:  :popcrn:  :popcrn:  BTW, I plan to create a sign for car shows showing the yellow 'Bird leading a "train" of wing cars around turn 4 at a super speedway.  :icon_smile_big:

To begin, the first four days of Ads... note the deep discount to $3600... the original buyer confirmed that was the asking price, but believes that the dealer accepted an even lower offer from him...   Also, some "as found" pics...

The Superbird spent about a year "down on the farm", before being moved back to San Antonio where it was stored in a boat storage unit to protect it from the elements...

Not at all likely... ORR appears to be their last name, while O.R. Mitchell used his initials.

I have a fair amount of documentation for the Superbird, most of it from the ownership history request that I made before the records were destroyed in the mid 80s.

Below:
1) Broadcast Sheet
2) Manufacturer's Statement of Origin
3) Original Title (Originally titled in his mother's name due to his age & financing needed)
4) Original License Plate Receipt

I like the name.

Thanks Doug... I had never been close to giving the car a name, but when I saw the "San Antonio Express" logo on the paper that I had copied one of the Ads out of, I had an epiphany... or maybe a senior moment  ;) , that the the name was an excellent fit and the image of it leading a "train" of wing cars single file around a sweeping racetrack turn came to mind.

I spoke briefly with the original owner again this evening.  He has been extremely busy at work this week because he apparently works in a job connected to the now turbulent stock market.  Hopefully the stock market will calm down next week, and we will be able to talk at greater length.

A few new revelations:

> The Superbird was frequently drag raced at Aloe Field/Victoria Dragstrip:  http://www.na-motorsports.com/Tracks/TX/AloeField.html
> The original 440 HP engine suffered a catastrophic failure, and is believed to be long gone (will ask for more details)
> Him and a car load of friends made an unplanned trip to Los Angeles, CA on the spur of the moment in the Superbird
> He believes that he still has some photos of the Superbird, but believes many more were lost during a divorce...
> He believes that some old friends may have additional photos of the Superbird... he will check with them.

That's all for now... updates as available... not sure if a lot of material will yet surface, but I am hopeful...

Absolutely YES!...  RS23U0E138126:  http://www.pantherpink.com/fm3019.htm (http://www.pantherpink.com/fm3019.htm)

440 HP, Column Automatic, 4:10 Dana, Air Grabber, rear go Wing spoiler, 15x7 Rallye wheels

Some interesting facts:

> I bought the car from Votaw's Wrecking Service at mile marker 61 on I10 near Flatonia, Texas for $125 IIRC
> The rear Go  Wing spoiler was stolen by an employee of Votaw's, and mounted backwards on a dark green 1969 Chevelle.  I tricked him into opening the trunk, and there were the FM3 mounting brackets.  I confronted him and the owner, but got stonewalled.  Also stolen were three of the 15x7 Rallye wheels, the fourth wheel being trapped under the GTX when the scissor jack being used toppled over.  Once again... stonewalled!
> The GTX was used by the Ed Dietz Studio in Houston to develop the model design for the Monogram 1970 GTX kit released at the same time as Kevin Kellerher's 1971 Hemi `Cuda kit
> Originally the FM3 GTX was bought as a parts car for a B5 Blue 1970 Hemi Road Runner that I owned:  http://www.sandysgarage.com/current.html (http://www.sandysgarage.com/current.html), and was not for sale separately.  I was sold as part of a three car package to a well practiced liar named Jerry Calder that never intended to get the other cars... paid me $400 IIRC as a "down payment" and went on to rip off a lot of folks before being "run out" of Dallas.  By the time that I sold the car, I wanted it saved... so that was the only good part to the deal.
> I did keep a few parts from the FM3 GTX... the front bucket seats are in the Superbird, the rear seat in another car, and the 4.10 Dana is under my triple black Charger.
> The car has been owned by six different people since I sold it, and is currently owned by Scott L. in Oklahoma...

Kinda interesting how seemingly separate cars and events tie together... and how I can ramble on about them!   :eek2:  :smilielol:

Tick, Tick, Tick...  time is running short  ;)  ...  The Daytona is now up on jackstands, being measured for a custom made roll-around cart.  The replacement firewall is in-stock, as well as most needed parts for the uni-body frame repair.  Also now in stock are the NOS nose cone and NOS valance, used driver's side fender, rough headlight buckets, nice used 1970 Charger fenders & hood, Etc.

If a Troy-Tradeā„¢ deal would occur, then of course the current Daytona would be redundant...  :whistling:

Yes, indeed.. It was great talking to the original owner of my Daytona and hearing his stories; how the purchase came to be, all the band members buying Daytonas and then, in a episode of rage, blew the original 440...

Not a lot of progress on the inventory so far, but the re-arranging is starting to rev-up... especially now with cooler weather finally starting.  A major milestone was reached last weekend, with the second workshop "annex" being powered up... it's wiring was completed two years ago, but the feeder run through the "Dodge Mahal" and an underground conduit was finally completed last week.  This clears the way for a new 16 camera color high-res video surveillance system to replace the old 4 camera B&W system, might happen in the next week or so.

There has been significant progress on clearing up floor space by utilizing the warehouse shelving that I acquired recently.  A friend who is an artist with metal is starting to build special racks for cylinder heads, transmssions, etc for future use.  Right now he is developing a roll-a-round engine cart design, and we just field tested a general-use cart he built with two Hemi blocks... no problem!  So much progress is being made, but there is a long way to go...  The sale of my Challenger convertible is pending... hate to see it go, but the money is needed to fund other projects.

As far as trades, I am certainly open to trades for a turn-key Daytona or Superbird, especially a Daytona with an Automatic.  As my cars start to get restoration work done on them, the chances of a trade being worked out are significantly lower... I am open to all levels of trading, so what is available for trade depends on what is being offered...  I am also open to trading for a Daytona clone, but cars like the Hemi `Cuda will not be part of that trade.  In addition to several cars, I have a life-long gathering of Mopar parts that can be part of a trade, so a deal like a car plus parts like a 69 RR Air Grabber hood, 18 spline Hemi 4 Speed, NOS 70 Cuda front valance, NOS 70 E-Body Pistol Grip shifter set-up, NOS 70 `Cuda grille & HL bezels, 1970 B-Body 4.10 Dana rear axle, Etc.

Twenty years ago most of these cars and parts would never have been offered for sale by me... advancing age and other life interests & priorities changes things!

I have not yet found the main set of Superbird pics, but here are a few showing the nose assembly when I bought the car some 30 years ago... :eek2:  The nose assy was in nice shape compared to many that I have seen...

Also, a thrown together artwork for the moment...

Thanks for posting the pic, and no problem with hi-jacking... I already hi-jacked this thread to ramble on about the FM3 GTX... ;)  As I recall your car came from Nowell in Arlington, Texas... I will see what I can find on the newspaper archive sites that I am using...

While we wait and see if the original owner supplies some back-in-the-day pics, I  will post some more before clean-up pictures.  Later I will post new pics to show how the 'Bird cleans up...

First the worst side of the car, the passenger side that you have already been seeing pics of.  It is still in work, but starting to look a bit better...

The Dana 60 is still in place... not sure if the ring & pinion were ever changed, but I will find out.  The only decal other than the inspection sticker that I left on the Superbird, was this RR "Beep-Beep" decal... not sure when or who changed it to an "EEP" decal... :eek2:

Jacking instruction decals...

Most of the lenses and trim parts just need a cleaning and polishing from what I have seen so far.  Maybe after the clean-up I'll just drop a 440 with a transmission in it and drive it...  :icon_smile_big:  ...for maybe a  $3000 investment for essentials!  :scratchchin:

Thanks... The 'Bird is looking better than I expected so far.  Rubbing out the oxidized paint by hand is taking too long, might need to buy a couple of pads for my 7 in. power buffer!  At least there's no worries about rubbing through the paint on the edges of the body panels...

Slowly working on my cars since the weather has cooled off.  Worked on the `Cuda 440-6, the Daytona, and the Superbird yesterday.  As the Daytona is coming apart as needed to begin the front frame repair, the Superbird is having it's parts returned.  For the most part, Aero Car unique parts were removed while the cars were in public storage... in theory making them harder to identify when the storage unit's doors were open.

The removed items have been kept in a well marked box, some having been wrapped up since 1995...  All were clearly labeled for easy identification.

Time for an update...  "Clean-Up needed on Aisle 1"... something has blocked it off!

A friend and I re-installed the nose cone onto the Superbird without the headlight assemblies.  It was a last minute decision, and the headlight assemblies were left off to save time.  A friend who teaches a 6th grade Science class had planned to use my `Cuda and Challenger for a video about scaling objects and their features, by making a video with various scale sizes of diecast/plastic models displayed with the "1:1" actual car.  Because the two cars were in a small garage, the video would had to have be taken outside to get the entire car into the framing of the shot.  Well, the weekend was too windy for that due to the narration needed for the video.

So the decision was made to shoot the video inside the "Dodge Mahal" workshop, with the triple black Charger and Superbird displayed with the model cars.  I expect to get a copy of the edited final video within the next 2-3 weeks...

The short video was "filmed" with an iPad!... amazing video quality for something that looks like a small clipboard!

Thanks Tim!... Stay tuned, the original owner and I continue to talk every week or two.  He remains confident that he has some old pictures, paperwork, and even parts of the Superbird... It may take a long time to find the material though, and his current work schedule limits his free time to search.

In the mean-time I will continue to clean and prep the car as my time permits.  Also, I will continue to post old pics and documents related to the Superbird.  The 'Bird is looking a lot different with the nose cone, fender scoops, and A-Pillar moldings reinstalled!  :2thumbs:

I have a fair amount of documentation for the Superbird, most of it from the ownership history request that I made before the records were destroyed in the mid 80s.

Below:
1) Broadcast Sheet
2) Manufacturer's Statement of Origin
3) Original Title (Originally titled in his mother's name due to his age & financing needed)
4) Original License Plate Receipt
Wow thats amazing. The crazy thing is I just noticed that my 70 charger came from the same dealership in San Antonio.  O.R mitchell Chrysler I also have the original invoice. I also live in San Antonio which makes it pretty cool.

Trying out a new camera... downsized & highly compressed pics taken without flash with a Nikon S6200 "point-and-shoot" camera.   Pretty amazing for a $130 (on sale) 16 Mpx camera IMO.  Previous pics this week were taken with an IPhone... excellent considering you can have it available all the time.
