Title: big block combo
Post by: dukeboy_318 on October 28, 2007, 08:16:31 AM
Help me out if you would be so kind by checking this combo and letting me know your opinions.  This will be in a 77 400 with 727 trans going into a 74 charger SE.  Motor for this example will be .030 over.  heres the combo(prices included just for giggles)
Part                     PN Number  Price through summit(just for estimate)
Wieland Action plus intake pn: 8008- $175.95
KB 240 pistons UEM KB2400308- 313.99
Comp cams timing chain CCA 2104 56.99
Holley Hydr. Lifters  71977PR        90.39
Voodoo Cam; duration in/ex 268/276, duration @ .050- 226/234, gross lift- .494/.513; pn number 60303- 132.39
2400 TCI stall covnerter- TCI 141200- $ 305.95
Hedman shorty hedders 1.75 inch primaries to 2.5 in collector- 78070- $159.99
Eddelbrock 750 cfm electric choke- 9913-$229.95
B&M flexplate- BMM 10237-$79.95

I will using the stock heads as well, might have them ported and polished if money in budget allows.  machine and rebuild cost will be as followed
Bored to .030 over (if needed) $120
Hot tanked - $60
New cam bearings- $80 installed
Clevite Main bearings installed 80 bucks(depending of undersize)
Melling High volume oil pump- MELM63HV- 61.95

Hopefully I can make 350 or high on the HP side and still have a streetable and durable engine.  Id rather sacarfise power for durability. If i need to clarify anything, let me know

thanks

A few suggestions.

Have the block checked for cracks

Recondition the rods and have them shot peened

ARP rod, main and head bolts

Stainless steel valves

for $200 more you can get a good forged piston
Most Hedman headers will NOT clear the mini starters
I would use a Holley or Proform carb

Really? Why is that? Is that a usual case with headers on these cars? I figured a smaller starter would mean more clearance?

Hedman has a different design for their headers putting one of the tubes right where the mini sits

:iagree: I have Headmens and had to do some heating and bending to make the mini started fit. It seams that I have allllllways had to do some extra fitment, but this time was BIG.......  :icon_smile_blackeye:

I have a set of the Hedman 78070 shorty hedders on my 74 Dodge 440 pick-up and I am pretty sure that you can't use the stock starter but I maybe wrong, I have no clearance issues with them around the mini-starter the only area I remember that was close was one of the collectors comes close to the pan rail but that worked out fine, I have run these hedders for about 6 years now and they have worked really well for me.

not bad, upgrade the trans and different gears you might hit high 12s.

The list looks good....few things i would change though ;

(1) Performer RPM intake manifold instead of the Wiend
(2) PTC 11in torque converter instead of the TCI

I would use the MP heavy duty stamped rocker arms and a set of chrome moly pushrods. Comp Cams # 911 valve springs will work fine with that VooDoo bumpstick....or go with the recommended lunati springs....your choice.

Not sure on the oilpan....but with an HV pump you will want something better than stock. A windage tray of course to keep the oil in the pan...where it belongs. The 6qt Hemi pan is very good but i'm not sure if it fits in a 74 Charger.  :scratchchin:

Headers sould be a 1 3/4in primary long tube design....no shorties. Again...not sure what fits well in the later chassis.  :shruggy:

Yeah im planning on an aftermarket oil pan, ive heard some bad things bout the edelbrock performer RPM intake.  Im also thinking of going a little bigger on the cam, maybe this one , similar to what hot rodder is running,

im also getting a milodin windage tray and going to get some new valves too.

Nothing wrong with the RPM intake manifold.  ;)

The 268* Voo Doo cam is the right choice for a 400ci engine.....the larger stick for hotrodder's motor would be too big....remember he is building a 500in stroker. Don't overcam or you will be sorry.  :icon_smile_blackeye:

Nope....those springs will work fine. Basicly a stock spec (dimension) high performance spring.  :2thumbs:

I'd use HP manifolds before I use shorty headers.  The shorties don't flow any better.  The length of a headers contributes greatly to their efficiency, not just their tube diameter.  You're exhaust valve and port are the real bottlenecks.

im going to end up stroking this motor and running flowtech headers, seem to be a decent choice based on flow and price
