I'm having a difficult time figuring out this stripe code on a '68 fender tag. Can someone offer some clarity?
UBS
B 7
383 auto XP car.
Thanks!
A 68 Charger XP probably shouldn't have that code so....
Misstamped?
Badly remade tag?
Tag doesn't go with this car?
Can you post a picture of the tag?
:scratchchin:
If this is a St. Louis built car (XP29H8G) it is definitely a bad remake.
If this is a Hamtramck built car (XP29H8B) it is probably a bad remake.
XP29H8B
So how does one go about verifying or simply speculating the accuracy of the options compared with the car? How does this impact value? No broadcast sheet, of course.
The tag decodes as a triple black car with a white transverse stripe.
Stripes were only available on XS VIN?
Correct. It was part of the RT package.
Do we start the fake tag argument or the quirky Mopar argument? :popcrn:
The Bengal Chargers had stripes, but not all were R/T's. Could it be a dealer with a little know how could have ordered this car with factory stripes? :popcrn:

Highly likely it is a bad remake.
Posting the SO number would help determine if this was a 'dealer special order'.
Putting a stripe on something that wasn't supposed to have one would proably trigger a purpose SO.

Seller was very upset when I questioned the stripe code. Does anyone have an example of a verified original striped '68 XP car?

The
ONLY non-R/T 1968 Chargers that I am aware of that had a stripe were the "Bengal" Chargers (even though some were R/Ts). I honestly can't remember if the stripe is called out on the tag - but the color code would be a clue.

Both of those things make me lean more toward 'bad tag'.
Me too, I know little about tags but I'm trying to learn and that one seems wrong.
So, kind of an unspoken consensus has been reached here :scratchchin:
a partial VIN would confirm that indeed the tag is "FAKE" - XP29H8B3??xxx - fill in the ?? or more
:popcrn:
I messaged the VIN to 69Coronet and he thinks the tag is not original.
