Title: DAYTONA UPDATE , PILLARS , INSTALLED AND POLISHED
Post by: daytonalo on November 16, 2006, 12:38:20 AM
Sorry guy's if I'm boring you , I have completed the fitting and polishing of pillar trim and they look as good as origanal after installed [minus the inside tabs in whichcant be seen after installed anyway , those tabs are the reason they had to use all that funky sealer . I revised and fit very snug on gaskit . They are held in place with three trim screws on back side of drip rail just like orig .also been busting my ass to get all body  gaps as good as a HONDA , not easy , pulling, tweaking, welding , hammering .i think it will be worth it ! I just hope I'm not wearing a diaper by the time its done !

Just out of curiousity, but did you use an origional to go by, when making those? Or just the posted photo's on here? Just wondering.

Looks like the car is coming along very nicely though.

Those look great. When does mass production begin?  I too am spending a tremendous amount of time with the gaps on the current Daytona. It will pay off in spades!  Keep us informed with updates. It is not at all boring seeing pics of project progress (these are my favorite threads). Rick

Congrats on the 1,000 post as well.

$300 a pair doesn't sound like a bad deal.

What are you using to make them? As in what metal? And then your having it chrome plated right?

I Had a template I made off of Dave's car .Do this mean Im getting royalities anytime soon :icon_smile_big:Just kidding nice work

And asked a similar question as this one 500 asked What are you using to make them? As in what metal? And then your having it chrome plated right?

Similar to 69 500s ? They look good you hardwork is paying off.I had some of these moulding laying around from a parted conv.As they are already concave .Might be a place to start from and modify a existing piece.Got to hand it to for fabbing up those from scratch.Do {you start from with a piece off stainless.}Or alum which would be easier to shape .And could be highly polished out

I checked my friends car to see if it had the messy caulk and finger prints on the pillars. As found on my old original daytona. And this is how it looks this car was bought in 78-79 .After I passed on it .Not to build a daytona with AC

This is just meant to be a example how the factory stuff was .Like when you thought my windshield had been out on my original daytona .As it had putty with fingerprints.

your daytona was the only one that I have seen that had butyl sealent gobbed along the pillar stainless, Maybe the car had a ws installed and the glass co couldn't figure out how to get them off.I installed auto glass for 5 years and I know how it is when new models come , you just had to wing it !

M25 is the moulding bellow the doors.I have several set of those in stock .What needs to be done is to modify the 70 charger hoods by deleting the ribs .For daytona hoods.Get those 70 coronet flat hoods converted for superbird usage .Drill holes for scoops and make them wing car ready..And get rid of some stuff I got stored all over from being a car pack rat .I saved from a low mile superbird the original fact exhaust to copy. And saved a fiberglass lower valance for a daytona .

Hemi Geno had this to say on that subject on daytona hoods

I fully intend to use a '70 Charger hood on my car, but the ribs will be removed since I can't say that they were there in the first place.  The few pictures of the car I have with its original hood open don't show the front lip area.

Then it was a possibilty that early daytonas didnt have ribs .And later ones did .Daytonas Schedule Production Dates were from 4-27 April 27-6-12 June 12.My car had a 606 June 6 SPD.And had the original smooth underside hood on it

Ummm, that's a very broad generalization there Larry.  Did you even bother to check with your "sources" to find out what ratio of cars were found to have ribbed hoods?  What verification was done by you, Galen or Mike Goyette to confirm that such cars have NEVER had any bodywork done to them (even damage by the shipper, the dealership, or an automotive repair shop that wanted to conceal the fact that they damaged a car)?  Or compared those cars' position on the shipping list to see if there is any correlation between a very late conversion/ship date and ribbed hoods?  Any Day One "right off the transporter" pictures of Daytonas with ribbed hoods?  Did anyone check those ribbed hoods for a complete paint job in areas that Creative couldn't reach with a paint gun when they initially installed the hoods (and do you even know what procedures they used??)?

It cannot be argued that the vast majority of Daytona hoods have no ribs.  I can also say that I have not yet personally seen an original Daytona with a ribbed hood.  I cannot and will not say that there were never any Daytonas that had ribbed hoods installed, but I know what I expect to see when a Daytona's hood is raised.

Let's assume for the sake of discussion (or in your case, argument - since that is what you want to do) that there were a very small number of Daytonas with ribbed hoods for no explicable reason.  If you were really interested in doing a clone to the highest degree of accuracy, would you really want to put a ribbed hood on a car - claiming that it is patterned after such a small minority of cars and flying in the face of the rest of the cars' pattern?  Sounds like you're really not trying to be all that accurate after all...

It's your clone - build it how you want to, but don't tell me what is and is not correct for an original Daytona based on little (if any) evidence to back up your claim.

Get some facts together and then tell us what we have learned.   :eyes:

Two things sunshine , Dave has always made the statement that DAYTONA'S NEVER,NEVER,NEVER,NEVER, NEVER came with ribbed hoods . I could care less, my car for Christ sake has a Vega plug , I tear into the orig cars because they  always get the small details wrong when it would take one of JERRY'S kids 2 hours to make it right . Ribbed or no ribs I could care less , although I love correcting the so called experts when a guy like me just gets into the hobby !!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Actually, you love tearing into the replica's as well.  The most recent example would be the thread on the #22 69 Daytona spotted.  I'm sure you will remind me that car has what you feel are large details, not small ones, but you do point out that you will build a clone down to every detail.

Anyone can sit on the sidelines and try to pick a daytona apart , but until you or anyone else has built a daytona with a plug , nose that doesnt look like one of JERRY'S KID'S hug it and headlight doors that operate like the originals did just sit ion your couch in snoppy pajamas and watch !!!!!!!! Dane , Larry [hotrod] RENE , MIKE G will vouch that it is a great deal of work to get it right . My car is a clone and I am one anal son of a bitch that will not settle for anything less than perfection !!!!!!!!!!!!.  I would have included Dave but the clone he had did not have a plug , it was more of a hotrod , well sort of ,it had a 318 !      Thank you , rachmed

It was 1 of the only 2 cars Ted Built cars early on By his own hand and parts .He finished a yellow one first from a 69 RT .And I picked up the orange car 70 318 AC car that was pretty much there .And traded a superbird body for the orange one  .Just needing tweaking in some areas like trunk hinges headlight openings and trunk braces .And mechanicals. It had a white stripe no daytona letter cut out.Later got letters made.Applied and painted wing black. We thought the nose seals looked good with color on them .

Larry do you ever get tired of condemning everything and everyone? I seem to remember a time not to long ago you relied on Dave to answer all of your questions. You used his cars for measurements. We went with you in the middle of winter to cut a roof off of a car. May I add that Dave told you about this yard? Sit back and think for a few minutes. Dave found you the car, helped you find parts, allowed you to use his car for accurate information. And yet all you can do is put him down. He may not have his Daytona now, but he has had several real wingcars and a clone. You're too talented to be wasting your time and energy condemning the rest of the world. We all have our cars. We all love our cars. It isn't necessary for you to constantly look for arguments with everyone. Does it make you feel like more of man? Because all it really does is make you sound like a spoiled, jealous child. Grow up. Finish your car. Enjoy your car. And stop berating everyone else.

This topic is going and going, but doesn't stay on one subject.

Just curious, but why nit pick other people's work all the time? Do you think your the greatest or something? Don't get me wrong your progress so far does look good, but there is also a time and a place for pointing out imperfections on others cars. Some people know their parts aren't right, but are comfortable with that due to the amount they were willing to spend to do a clone.

Others have deep pockets, or they have talents to do their own work. Not everyone is blessed like that.

Since when can a person make a comment when a nose is the wrong shape or a wing is dimensionally wrong ,is this board run by Nazi's , no this is a place to discuss issues!!!!!!!!!!!! I have never pointed out a a particular part and said that individual has no talent . I am aware that some people are clueless , and if someone post a car why in the hell cant we as wing car lovers voice our opinion's ? Just because you think the world is a friendly place paved with daisy's and lilacs that mean we all agree , no , trust me there are no free rides for anything nice , its just hard work and determination ! Last but not least ,always CALL IT AS YOU SEE IT !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! That said do you need a hug , poopy ???????????????????  The only reason I share me knowledge is not to belittle anyone ! I do this to hopefully show people that they can do themselves and maybe see a method or technique they never thought of !!!!! Now get of the couch and start a daytona  clone and help a brother out !!!!!!!!!!

Get off the couch?  Geez man, Danny already owns a legit 500 and probably knows as much or more about those cars than anyone else I can think of.  Further to that, he freely helps people all the time.  Throw rocks at me if you want, I'm just a post whoring freeloader but give the guys who deserve it, credit.

I was not blessed withdeep pockets or a trust fund !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!1 THE ONE AND ONLY WAY I WILL OWN A HEMI DAYTONA IS TO BUILD A REPLICA !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!i I WILL GIVE NO CREDIT TO A GUY WHO HAS ADVICE OR COMMENTS ON WHERE , HOW OR WHEN THINGS SHOULD BE DONE WHEN MOST GUYS OUST STROKE A CHECK OR GET DADDY TO BUY THEM A CAR !!!!!!!!! WE NEED ANOTHER SECTION FOR GUYS WHO OWN ORIG DAYTONA,AND NEVER DID A FULL RESTO OF ANY TYPE , AND ANOTHER SECTION FOR THE LESS FORTUNATE LIKE MOST OF US WHO PUT IN THE LONG HOURS , AND  KNOW WHAT IT TAKES TO BUILD A CAR FROM THE GROUND UP , NOT SOME CAR COLLECTOR WHO KNOWS HOW TO TURN A KEY AND MAYBE CHANGE THE OIL !!!!!!!!!!!!!!This is directed at anyone in particular , I like all you guys even the guys who know what Vin# a daytona should be with a column shift ,and the guy who blessed with an orig car who bought it years ago and does nothing with it because they cant restsore because of lack of ability or money , I'm not one pf those , I'm a guy who has built many of cars , trucks and raceboats from scratch form a pile of poop !!!!!!!!!!!

Larry, you're gonna give yourself a stroke before you ever get to enjoy that car.  Relax more, be angry less.

Larry, I will give your car a FANTASTIC home.  But I'd much rather see see you finish it and drive it to some meet where we can each enjoy a beer and debate in person.

I find it hard to believe that daytonaloo has time to do anything but belittle members on this site let alone fabricate parts.  For no apparent reason he has mocked, name called etc no less than 3 members in this thread alone....stranger thing is after all that, out of the blue he asks a question about Superbird parts like a normal person and gets a normal answer :scratchchin:
Not enough meds?  Too many meds?
Your "holier than thou" attitude is getting real old..........
