Title: In the search of a 1968 Dodge Charger
Post by: rollo1504 on September 10, 2018, 07:25:40 AM
Hello Folks!

I am looking for a 1968 Dodge Charger from the U.S. as these cars here in Europe not affordable and the guys here are asking ridiculous prices....

In the web after weeks of research I think it is almost impossible to find links or offers/contacts which are not scumbags....

So can someone recommend me a trustworthy ressource or maybe someone knows somebody how is thinking about selling a Charger....

70k ready at hand.....

Replies or PM's are highly welcomed.

Thank you!

Roland

Why not look up european companies that bring in cars for people?. Much easier than trying to do it yourself mate.
Look for ones near you or around europe that specialise in dealing and importing cars from overseas.

Importing a car is not the problem Sir!

The problem is to find a trustworthy seller private/dealer in the U.S.

The only way I know is ebay but that cannot be the only possibility.....

Or are there only fully restored cars available in the U.S.?

I could find many other cars in the web but 99% figured out to be scumbags/scammers....
And as 70k is a lot of money I don't want to put that much money on the line and transfer it to maybe nowhere....

Regards

He's right ....its not easy to get one in to the UK (still in Europe for another 200 days!!)...at least to get one with an honest description. I was going to use a guy in Holland that uses eBay.....but £10k got you a bare rusty northern USA shell!! No thanks. I just jumped on the classic car sites in both the UK and USA for months (many folks advertise on both sides of the pond) until I found a guy in California. He was helpful....sent loads of pics...even after I stopped asking for them. In the end we built up good rapport and trust and I sent him the money....he dropped it at the docks and I arranged everything else from this end. The car was far from perfect as I knew ....but it was exactly as described. I still talk to him now....he's not a member on here unfortunately ....and he's the only one with progress pics of my car. I sent him a bottle of his favourite Scotch at Christmas that he could no longer find in the US and he says he would like to holiday in the UK (never been) in the future and would like to time it to see my car all done.....I think he might actually do it too! It was also nearly complete (as in not many important parts missing) and cost a only a little more than the rusty hulks from Holland. Not using agents cuts out the middleman costs and hopefully increases the honesty! Persevere, keep looking, keep contacting sellers and hopefully it will all come together. Good luck!

PS. Where in Europe are you?

I've got a 1968 Charger that I've entertained the idea of selling only to fund another project.
I don't like the idea of selling it, but it would help to get my project a lot closer to being roadworthy.

Driving a Charger in Austira would be soooo sweet! love your country. Lived in Belgium most of my life and visited several times. Like they said, come over here, get a car and ship it back. Save yourself a ton of headaches.

I love the idea to come over but even if I would do it then I would not have enough time to search for it as I do not even know WHERE a should start....

And IF there would be really a possible candidate I would always be too late. Until I would be in the U.S. to check/see a buy candidate the owner would have already agreed to another deal and then I would sit over there, spent a lot of money for coming to the U.S. but NO CAR then.......

And YES, driving a 1968 Charger in Austria is a kind of rare... :-)

I hear you, but best bet still is to find a car here. Best way of course is to make a deal with a seller before you come out here, but yeah there's risks in that. Still, it's nothing like waiting months for your car to arrive only to find out it's 10 times worse than what you were told.

Where in Austria are you? I have very fond memories of Carinthia.

You probably know Doc Stinger in Voitsberg? If you haven't already asked him, do so! You just missed out on a black on black 68 Charger R/T that was restored by him...

Hey,

I was looking in the internet on the europe side and on the U.S. side....

On the U.S. side I went through craigslist and ebay and in Europe I was looking via www.mobile.de

One day an ad came up of a charger in SWEDEN.

I thought I would give it a try as it is already registered and all taxes paid for import etc and contacted the seller. After all the seller, his name is Christian, was a very very cool, honest and great enthusiast who was willing to sell his "former" dreamcar as he changed his focus to go flying and he needed some money.

I flew over to Sweden. He picked me up from the airport. We had a great day and he showed and explained me everything of the car. Story, how he found it, how he took it to Europe, what he did to the car etc. etc.
At the end of the day he brought me back to the airport.... Really nice from him.

The car itself was in perfect condition. And if I say perfect, I really mean PERFECT.

The car has been frame off restored, metal work, paintjob almost perfect done. The original wire harness which was in excellent shape was just upgraded with the hints from Nacho in the past.

- Matching numbers car
- Original buildsheet from 1968
- Original service manual book
- Motor rebuild and stroked to 505 cui
- Complete TTI exhaust
- MSD Atomic EFI
- Interior all renewed
- Whole lightsystem upgraded to LED but still in stockish look which I really love
- Front grill is completely straigt and in almost perfect condition
- Original steering wheel
- Etc. etc. etc.
- History of whole restoration as well as all billings and technical sheets

Will continue tomorrow with more details....

Ok and I know you guys want to know what I paid. I do not know why so many people always beating around the bush when it comes to this point:

70.000,-- EURO

Seller wanted 75.000,-- but he agreed to 70.000,--

The car is ready-to-drive and in real it looks even more fantastic than it is on pictures.
I could "feel" the passion and blood Christian invested in this car and I promised him that I am not another seller who does not care about the car's soul and it will be in very good hands.

Another GREAT thing was the shipment company which brought me the car from Sweden to my house. Nowadays it is really hard to find trustworthy guys but this Father&Son team were really really great.
The posted pictures and always provided status about the shipment/car, where the are actually on the road, posted pictures of the pick-up process and were very very comunicative to/with me.

They brought the care safely to my house yesterday in the evening and it was fantastic and a very adequate/moderate price too.

Will post some pictures soon.....

Now I am heading back home to unload all the stuff which came with the car and make a test drive with my 3-old son....

As promised I will post some pictures later....

Thanks to some U.S. guys for inventing such a great, unbelivable thing and more I am really glad to have had the possibility to own a small piece of great american car history!!!!

More questions to come for sure concerning my other 73 Charger SE project and the 68 beauty

Went out for a short testdrive before hibernation to due winter incoming here in Austria.

Damn the car has a lot of torque! Very responsive and acceleration and I have not even tried the kickdown yet.... :yesnod: :yesnod: :yesnod:
Asked the seller how many tq and hp as the motor had been rebuild but it has never been dyno'd.

Will post more technical details about the parts used... Maybe one of you cracks can estimate how much hp and tq it should have.

Please find some pictures enclosed as promised

Have a great time guys!

Do not know whats going on....

Can't post pictures....

System tells me either there is already a file uploaded with the same name but it is NOT or it tells me that this post has already been posted

Suggestions?

Each pic is < 200 kb and a valid file type jpeg and maximum size of 400 kb is also not exceeded....
