Off Topic Discussion / Re: 2 post lift for low garage...
Last post by Kern Dog - January 17, 2025, 09:21:51 PM
That is a nice looking place, Tim. The three car garage is a nice touch too.
The majority of the use that my lift gets is suspension and brake, oil changes, tire rotation and axle bearing work. Having the ability to stand while working is so much better than leaning over or sitting. Because of that, maybe a lift that isn't so tall would still be useful.
If I had a place with a ceiling too low for a traditional 2 post lift, I'd look for a way to modify the ceiling. I used to be a Carpenter and roof framing was my specialty. When the wife and I were contemplating a move to Arizona, when I saw a garage with a low ceiling I wasn't immediately deterred.
I have some free time....If you pay for air-fare, I can fly out and offer some ideas.....

Kidding, of course.

Yeah....what if some numbers guy restored it to stock and erased all that cool "Day Two" vibe?
I love a car that is updated to run fast and handle well but that car is a snapshot of history the way that it looks here.

Thank you.
Yes, I have a build thread at FABO about the 360 project. I use this same screen name on all the forums that I am on.

Tim, you were destined to have a Mopar! Growing up around them must have made a strong impression.
My Dad was a car salesman and manager. He always drove something late model. Mom drove a 78 Camaro, a 79 Camaro and an '82 Trans Am so I had more of a GM influence but the General Lee from the TV show won out.

Woah! busy man, you are making the most out of your retirement for sure. I am beyond jealous, few more years for me to go and I plan on doing the same.

So good to see the young man showing interest, my sons are somewhat interested but are not car guys... yet.

Got to love them A bodies, such a great platform.  Will you be posting up the build on the 67 in FABO? Ill have to check that out.  Our family car in the 70's was a clapped out 4 door 67 Dart, followed by a 72 Swinger.  I helped my brother build a 71 Swinger (70 tribute) with a magnum 380HP crate and 4spd, that thing hauled ass. If I didnt have a Charger, I would be driving a Duster right now  :yesnod:

Nice work

Monday of this week, a local buddy and I tore down a 360 that was pulled from another friends Valiant. He thought it blew a head gasket....

04 360 1.jpg

Wow...look at how the fire rings are bulged out!

04 360 2.jpg

I posted about this at FABO and a few guys chimed in....this is common with an engine that has too high compression.

04 360 3.jpg

04 360 4.jpg

It blew both head gaskets out. The FABO guys stated that the bulges are almost always UP toward the intake. The LA/Magnum series engines only have 4 bolts around each cylinder (Big blocks have 5) so they are more likely to blow out. I didn't know of this weakness, but I've never had a high compression small block before.
I did the math and it looks like this engine was around 10.6 to one with iron heads, way too high!
I have the block and heads at the machine shop now. I'm going to put this engine in a 67 Dart. It is a roller cam 1990 block and it came with a Hughes hydraulic roller....That ought to alleviate the anxiety that often comes with flat tappet engines.

first week for the 69 charger started  first of August 1968 , although i'm sure i did have saved pictures of 2 preproduction  69 chargers with  late july SPD , think i heard or read  one was a show car & had leaded over seams in the driver door jam , dont quote me on this though could easily be getting mixed up  :-\  :scratchchin:

i had hundreds & hundreds  of fender / vin tags & broadcast sheet pictures saved for 69 chargers , but lost the lot when my hard drive blew up years ago , started over but gave up was crazy idea givng how many i had lost  :-\  :brickwall:  i still have a few documented in the new file i started as follows

Hamtramck SPD  801 i have one        St. louis SPD  802 i have one
                802 i have one
                803 i have four

FWIW  a  Few of the early build 69s with  with low sequential numbers starting 10**** & 11**** , had the previously mystery firewall plug , that was still  mystery till (HemiGeno) discovered what it was or a good chance it was for  :yesnod:

An article in Mopar Action showed how sway bar bushing slop can be eliminated by switching the end links to something like these:

04 Moog 1.jpg

The one on the left has a pattern similar to what the old cars used, In the 70-72 Mopars, they are too long and need to be cut, shortened and welded to get to the right length. The ones on the right can be used if you install a sway bar in a car with no tabs on the lower control arms. The horizontal bolt goes through a hole that you drill in the control arm.
Next picture you can see how they swivel. They have ball joints inside for articulation.

For those that want to go in another direction, you can take the next one (on the right) and cut and modify it how you want:

Part number for the link on the left in the first picture:

Here is the other link in the first picture:
