I believe that board member Maxwell Wedge is the current caretaker of the car.

That was the 1st Canadian daytona it was Dr Cheesboroughs car .Before Jim got it

First Daytona Shipped from the Factory is Going up for Auction

Kingston ON. The very first Dodge Daytona ever shipped from Detroit back in 1969 is going up for auction on October 4th, 2008 in a small city in Ontario, Canada. The one-owner car was purchased new off the Kingston Dodge lot by Dr. John Chesbrough in 1970. Apparently, the car had been on display at the 1969 auto show and the Kingston Ontario car dealer convinced Dodge to give him the car for his lot.

Chesbrough has driven this car only 34,000 miles and it is in original condition except for a factory warranty repaint in 1971. One of the interesting features of the car is the dealer installed six-pack and finned valve covers. "That was how I purchased it." says Chesbrough, "I imagine they put those items on to make it more saleable - they tried almost everything to get it off the lot."

Online video interview of the owner with the car here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=J4Tx3JAFi8o

No car truly represents the beginning of this important age in the development of the American car than this very original specimen. 1st shipped from the factory, low miles, original, and in excellent shape, the car has remained in the care of its enthusiastic owner since purchased new in 1970.

Who will buy this well preserved and unique piece of American automotive history?

Call Barry Gordon, Gordon's Estate Services Ltd., 613-542-0963, Mon - Fri 830am - 5pm eastern time. Owner can be contacted for personal interviews through the estate agent.

Was it a oversight this car was a month early. They had to cut costs by leaving them out.Or just forgot them???

This car was shipped aprox one month before any of the others started shipping (according to the Creative Industries shipping list). The trunk mats look original with typical wear for the 39 years they have been in use and there are no mounting holes or marks of any kind in the trunk floor.

Watched the video and I think its very cool ~ however ~ some think it was a wrecked 500, which would explain no supports, repaint, and the SE option, and 1970 sale date...  Very cool car either way, just curious if its a real Daytona or a C500 with added nose & wing...  :popcrn:

It is a real Daytona.

Because of the way they were converted, the paint as delivered on Daytonas was often pretty bad.   This is not the only one that got repainted early on.

enough of the cars needed paint work that the factory rep for this zone did not even take time to look at ours. when informed that it was a daytona with paint issues, he ok'd the repaint, sight unseen.

I rebuilt the engine and trans, cleaned up the bottom (still looks great), cleaning up all the original components and re-painting the exterior only. Car should be painted in another month or two. Car has a lot of cool, unusual stuff compared to later cars.

But seeing how it was a wrecked 500 originally - should I bother doing this on a fake?

So for the record, your Daytona has no wing supports, never did, and you say this is becuase of early production?  I can understand the repaint, and the SE package being 1 of 10, the wing supports raise the most flags for me...

And I just want to know more about these cars, only reason I care to know an answer, not to call anyone a fake or cause any problems.  Keep that in mind when you reply...

The no wing support thing is still kind of a mystery .They had the engineering details down. The Dale Reeker Prototype daytona wasnt missing them ?
Title: Re: Original owner Daytona for sale in 2008
Post by: maxwellwedge on March 08, 2013, 01:24:14 PM
My Car is the very first car (other than the Reeker prototype) that was shipped out. It was shipped out way before any others as an announcement - show duty car. It was shipped 6-27. All the others didn't start shipping until 8-16. That is 50 days before any other. This is well documented on the Daytona Shipping List.

Either it was rushed out for it's show duty and the "production" wing brackets weren't ready yet  -  or, maybe they didn't want the supports showing in the trunk at the auto shows....or they just plain forgot. After 40+ years - It can only be an educated guess

Don't know about "flags being raised" or people that think it was a converted 500.......That makes me laugh. This car is on the list, been with the original owner until I aquired it, is known by all the wing car people in the hobby - all numbers authenticated. Has many prototype parts in the nose etc. etc.

I am proud to own it

Has many [[prototype parts]] in the nose etc
:Twocents: Im waiting to see it in a magazine to authenticate .What Ive seen on other cars and there nosecone internals to compare it with It also has the slanted A which was explained by Aero 426 mentioned by Dave Patik as a early decal issue and later corrected

Title: Re: Original owner Daytona for sale in 2008
Post by: nascarxx29 on March 08, 2013, 01:54:24 PM
The slanted A decal issue wasnt prototype related unique. But instead a early style of stripe

Aero426
master

The stripes on the orange car are masked off and believed to be original. Dave Patik said that the original stripes with the slant to the 'A' was one style of original stripe. He had made repro stripes like these early on in the mid 1970's, but straightened up the A's when people questioned that it looked wonky. Patik said that he made his first stripes by using tracings from originals.

The driver side of this same car has A's with some slant, but not as exaggerated as the passenger side.

This car is as pure as the driven snow.

You can bet that the guys who hand assembled these cars at Creative would LAUGH at us trying to figure out the minutia of each car 43 years later, and why something deviates from the norm.    You can expect the unexpected on an early car like this.

Also Chrysler had alternative vendors like Hackett brass for the wings .They could have had another sub vendor for nosecone parts make things more confusing

:Twocents: Maybe the R4 red 500 of Cotton Owens that got fitted for daytona parts at one point in time.Got people thinking a 500 transformation to a R4 daytona took place .Which is not the case .
There was also a rumored #2 daytona engineering car besides the Dale Reeker 69 RT changed to XX29 daytona was built

I saved this .
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kpnVbXa5Qr4

You see there is no wing braces or brackets or holes in trunk floor thru trunk matt. But there is the mounting stud poking up through the trunk matt for the daytona scissors jack.  :Twocents: The differences for the 500 would be no second jack instruction sticker on trunk lid backside no scissors jack mount point or wing braces or wing washer

Well, it's been over seven years...and guess what?
Still not painted! Ready for paint though. Since then, I have discovered a few other interesting differences, which I will report on soon.
I am only painting the exterior. The car had zero rust. The undercarriage and interior are very nice and keeping things like that as original as possible.

I remember being told of this Daytona's existence by some people in his general area. Then years later it appeared as Dr Cheeseborough decided to sell it. I watched with great interest when it was auctioned off.

It went for more than what i could afford at the time and i am glad Jim ended up with it.

Great car with a great story although I think the good Dr embellished a few details....which really there was no reason to do as clearly the car can stand on its own merits.

I met the doctor back in 1980 while on a car buying tour in his area. Spoke at length with him about the Daytona, but at the time he would not part with it. I tried once or twice a year for the next 5 years or so but he wouldn't budge. I eventually gave up. He had a few other "treasures" in his garage at the time as well. '57 or '58 Caddy, a couple of Healey 3000's. The included photo is of the Daytona in his dirt floor garage as I saw it in 1980. Sorry now I did not take more photos. When I saw the auction video it was long after the sale. A lot of the doctor's narrative in the video did not exactly match up with my recollection of our previous long ago discussions. Although nothing to question the authenticity of the car. Good luck to the current owner, I look forward to seeing the Daytona again in the future.

684: 1969 Dodge Special Edition Daytona
One owner, 34,027 original miles - VIN # XX29L9B414619 as reported by owner and as verified by Ontario Used Vehicle Information Package (UVIP). Bought new from a dealer in Kingston, Ontario. The dealer obtained the car from Dodge after seeing it at the Toronto Auto Show. Dealer installed six pack and dealer painted one time in 1970 after original paint started flaking. The dealer re-paint is an exact color match. This car is one of only 10 Special Editions in existence, and it is only one of two cars in Canada with leather interior. It has all of the Special Edition features and most parts have the original numbers. The vehicle hasn't been licensed since 2004 but has been started on occasion. It starts and runs perfectly. The original dark navy blue leather interior is in fantastic condition and includes a wood grain dash and electric windows among other special edition features. Original warranty card and other documentation is available. This vehicle was the first Special Edition on the shipping list from Dodge. This is your chance to own a piece of automotive history!

Yes, this is that car.

DC-93 tried the very early production bolt in wing "washer", late June, 1969.   It wasn't good enough and was removed, leaving the holes along the trunk flange. Photo below is from the Lockheed brochure. Pic taken at the Dan Gurney, Bobby Isaac test at Riverside, CA. December 1969.
I believe there is only one Daytona around that has the bolt in wing washers.  XX29L9B287970, #501 on the shipping list

DC-93 also had the early stripe with the slant "A" on them.  That stripe was applied when the car was updated to a Daytona, late June, before the first "production-like" wing car test at CPG July 13th., 1969.

This was a month and a half before the production Daytonas were mass produced by Creative in mid August, 1969.

Mine was around a month and a half before they started the mass conversions.
So many differences from the other Daytona's I have owned. Even the fender scoops are different.

So many differences from the other Daytona's I have owned. Even the fender scoops are different.

Different scoops??
Need pics, man!!!

And yes Dave, that is DC-93 testing at Daytona, August, 1969.

No problem - I'll post up pics of the scoops in a few days.

DC-93 has the correct, production part numbers on the scoops, but they are taller than later scoops.
This was measured off the car.

I know!  ;)
The scoops are at the resto shop and I have asked for pics of mine vs standard production.
I haven't had a chance to drive out there and see for myself.
I'll text him again right now!

I was just sent pics of my scoops.
The green ones are regular production off of another Daytona.
I will get better pics once I get over to the shop.

WOW!  Been a long time since I saw something this cool!
No traces of a part number or any other identifying marks?
Any difference in size compared to later production scoops?

Probably shipped to Creative in a box like this!

I second your WOW with that cool box!
I need to go out there and really compare and scrutinize mine vs later production scoops. I will try and do that during this week.
