Title: Green car haters
Post by: BDF on February 09, 2017, 10:16:52 PM
Hello- First post here so be gentle...I have a green car for you to pick on if you want but I am techno-illiterate so you have to wait for pictures. Like I said it is green so what's the rush right? My car's birthday is March 19 and my goal is to get some pictures on here by then. I was going to join '69 registry but read the drama instead but in the meantime picked up some really good info here and wanted to be a part of it.
Future posts will be much shorter than this intro.
My Dad bought this car new. It is the first car I drove (in '72), he put 150k on it- I rolled it over to 200k in 2004ish. It is a numbers matching, never wrecked 2 owner car. My father & myself. He gave it to me as a wedding gift.
!!!!!THANKS DAD!!!!!
It has had 1 engine overhaul (MILD, future topic) and 1 repaint in '87. I went through car A few years ago and been driving it every chance I can since!
The poor thing is a 20 footer from road rash so I think the old girl deserves some fresh make-up this spring.
Here is what the fender tag looks like:
END
M31  R11  V1W   V88   26
G11   G33   H51   J25   L31   M21
A01   A04   B41   B51  C16  C55
    F6   C6G   F8   319   187768
E86   D32   XS29   L9B   326xxx
I look forward to many pleasant exchanges, Thanks!

Welcome!

The pics can be hosted here if they are under 200kb each and a unique name - of all the pics ever uploaded to this site, so mash the keyboard for a unique name.  Or host them on Photobucket or another free hosting site and post the link here.

I think for many of us it's the triple greens and green interiors that are a bit much.  But, hey, at least you have a white top!  I look forward to pics.   :2thumbs:

Hey...Me too, sorta.
Mine started out either F8 or F7. Back in 2001 I lost the fender tag. I didn't think it was that important at the time!   :brickwall:

Welcome BDF.....

I have grown to appreciate the green cars. One that is well preserved is a great time capsule as to how SO many of these cars were built back then. How often do you see ANY new cars with color coded interiors anymore? Most seem to be  variation of black, gray or tan. Some of our cars came with white interiors! Some looked like a homage to Halloween with an orange and black seat combination. WHuuuuuuTT ????

Thanks all-
F-6 IS my favorite!
I have read the help topics here pretty well & do NOT (don't call BS!) have a 'puter at home and am using iphone.
I can use a friends computer but is there anyway to do something like email pics to this site? My phone will downsize them small enough. I am using a company phone and can not download apps.
In the meantime I WILL review the help topics & experiment. Most likely to be booted off for screwing something up.
Later. I hope...
If I need more help I will ask for some in appropriate spot.

PS: I've gotten used to the F-8 interior over the last 40 some years!

For any of these cars to have survived for almost 50-years now is something of a minor miracle. Green, black, blue or other, the fact that they still roll down our roads is a testament to somebody's care and hard work along the way.  Ugly cars don't last anywhere near that long, certainly not in any numbers. These 2nd generation cars are as much art as they are wheels and that art has a lot to do with why many of them are still with us.

we green car (F3, F4, F5, F8) owners hate F6 - "bright green metallic" because we wish our cars were "that GREEN!"  :2thumbs:

Thank for posting that Johnnycharger, appreciate it!
Yes, that is one of my family's jewels...
I had no idea how great this site would be. Like some great big disfunctional family.
I've already had occasion to interact with Kern Dog.
I am aware that grammer & punctuation are highly regarded on this site.
However, mistakes will be mDe.
Johnnycharger and I are gonna cruise this summer because we DRIVE ours!

Welcome & very nice car  :drool5:, had a 69 that color I stripped out back in the day, still have the doors & other stuff. If I remember right just the shell what I got. Nothing wrong with green, got a 69, A4, green top & interior 4-spd S.E. talk about strange.

Post by: BDF on February 10, 2017, 09:32:31 AM
I am new to the site but not mopars or Chargers. My uncle had a '68 Hemi Charger. Don't know color code, no one cared back then. It was reddish-orange with white top/ interior. My best friend's brother way back then also bought a '69 and when my father came home one day & asked what kind of car he should get I yelled " Charger! A green one!"
Green has always been my favorite color...much to my continued delight he came home with this one a few days later.
My 1st car was a '69 Charger 500. I will ask about it at Aero place later. Then a white '66 Coronet with 440/auto whose combo now resides in my '63 Willys 4x4 wagon which is 'resting' now but put on quite a slippery/billowy 4 wheel smoke show.which is a topic for another thread. Have owned a M-37 & M-43.
I LIKE DODGE!
Thanks for the nice comments fellas!

That is a beauty 500Jon!
I didn't see it when I last looked at this. The weather is foul here and phone service is marginal now so it takes a LONG time for things to load.
I am going to have to be patient or be double posting because they do not show up right away.
Still dialing it in.

True....but it is a 500.....and most on here would swap body organs for one...but......I would like it more just about any other colour. But hey colour is a very personal thing and lots will probably not like my Charger colour choice....which is fine. Obviously if a had a 500 it would be being restored by the numbers...green or not. I find them far more desirable than even a wing car.....well out of my budget though.

Attempting quote 1st time.
I bought my C500 from my Dad's cousin. It was 440/727 red with black bench interior & column shift.
I paid $750 in 1977 & sold back to father about 1981. It went thru one of our "100 year floods" in Napa and he sold to collector in Cloverdale/Ukiah?
I think I'll be sick, then sad for a bit now...
Still have the green one though. Now I feel better.

The REAR-VIEW of a C500 is clean and uncluttered and particularly nice in GREEN!
The rear-view of a Daytona (in green) is somewhat overstated, maybe its the HUGE white STRIPE!!! :scratchchin:

To Mike and others with Green Turds.

I was very concerned about the term 'green turd' as most I've seen are primarily BROWN!

Then I found this and it clears it up for me, especially the BROWN one on my best 'BLUE suede shoe'... :brickwall:

Lol......if you are worried about being "somewhat overstated"....then probably driving a Daytona is not for you. Not many cars shout "LOOK AT ME!" quite like a huge winged Daytona. Which to be honest is part of the reason they have little appeal to me. C500 or 440RT for me everytime.

You are probably RIGHT! alfalfa.

Over twenty five years ago I had the chance to buy a Daytona or a Superbird.
Driving Big dodges and Plymouths around London Town never worried me and in fact, gave me a thrill!
Now I am an early retiree the thought of driving a Wingcar in the UK, is quite Alien!

But as and when my Goose-sh*t green C500 is done I will drive her with GLEE!!!

My Parents new 70 charger was EF8, My 70 r/t I bought in high school in 77 was EF8, the 70 r/t I bought in 08 was EF8, and when I repainted that car it was redone in a base/clear pearl resembling EF8. All these cars had green interiors.  Point is, although not my first choice of color in the 70s, it was a heritage thing for me. I spent 6 years, all my free time, and TONS of money nut and bolt resto/modding this car. It is irritating for people to off hand write it off because it is green. I mean, for crist sakes it isn't your car, you will never have to own or drive it, so who cares what color it is.
I would like to think REAL car guys would look at the extent and quality of work done and appreciate that.

Some guys like rarity and green cars are the most common, I think that's part of it that plays into the bigger picture.
f6 is pretty scarce (spring color) and its a great looking shade so lumpng that in with "green mopars" is gonna make all the guys with f8 cars pissed.... cause they get all the hate not you with your poor f6 car. LOL
There is "desirable" green and "less desirable" green, f6 and alot of the 1970 high impact greens are pretty desirable still.

Maybe us green car guys need our own sub-group like the aero-dudes.
We are 'special' too!

Green is my favorite color. My brother went to Michigan State University and for some reason I really like British Racing Green. However, colors I REALLY hate are: Puke Green, Crack-house Purple, Blue, and Yellow.
My '69 Dart, and my my '72 charger were both Dark Green Metallic (F-7).

I was very concerned about the term 'green turd' as most I've seen are primarily BROWN!

Then I found this and it clears it up for me, especially the BROWN one on my best 'BLUE suede shoe'... :brickwall:

F6 is probably my favorite of all the Greens. Owning an F3 car since 1982, I've heard all the stupid comments about how ugly F3 is. To be honest, when it's faded and dull, it isn't pretty. But, in fresh paint it's a nice color. The guy that bought my car new, chose F3 because he liked the color.

The photo below is not a fresh F3 paint job, but a 30+ year old Maaco job.

I personally like green paint, but a triple green car goes up my butt like a hot poker. I've owned three '68s in Racing Green Metallic & my current one has a white interior with green dash & carpets. Not being a fan of green interior, the contrast was better than I expected it would be once I saw it in person.

My green '69 Super Bee came from the factory with two tone green interior. That green interior was the first thing to go. Looks much better with white interior, especially with it's white butt stripe.

With that said, I don't hate on other peoples cars that have green interior. I can appreciate them for what they are.

Literally every other house was a boarded up crackhouse and it was then I dubbed those colors that the houses were painted "Crackhouse" colors. I don't remember the wheels spacing (I'll need to measure them), but the tire sizes were LR50-15 and GR50-14.  This is what the car currently has and will have when done rebuilding the car.  Wheels are shot, so I will be replacing them.

I think hate is a very strong word. I do not like green much myself and would not buy a car (new or classic) in green..........but i would not use the word "hate" just for a colour! However If I was lucky enough to own an original hemi....it would stay original colour no matter what!! LOL!

If you grew up back in the day (US) when cars, clothing, home appliances, furniture, etc were either green, brown or gold...then you started to truly HATE those turd colours, by the late 60's (really late) wild colours started to appear on the scene, by 1970 everything was getting "groovey", wild colours, mod prints on clothing, furniture, even the automobile, there was a colour explosion, it probably lasted no later than the late 70's, then it returned back to the drabness, but among motorheads anything that was green, esp dark green was considered vile, brown or gold could be tolerated, but a paint change was always on the list of things to do after driveline mods, green cars always seemed to get a black or grey primer spraybomb job right out of the gate

True, I knew many owners of green cars that got spray bombed rather quickly once they were acquired. Also, many green cars were parted out. I called it "parts car green". :icon_smile_big: This is one I parted out in 1994. Kind of a bummer looking back, because it would have been a fairly easy restoration today.

Well I passed on a B5 70 R/T in 1986 for $1500 because the trans was blown...if that gives you any idea.

I also passed on a white superbird around the same time at @ $7500, of course that was a lot of money for a teenager at the time...plus it has 413 in it and I thought that was weird.   :P
Title: Re: Green car haters

I was there, painting cars, and if a car was green, gold, yellow, tan, or brown it was in line for a color change. part of that was those colors faded to ugly. If it red, blue or black it got left alone. Then we painted everything red, black or blue until the mid 80s and it seemed everything got painted maroon, brandywine, or bright blues or some shade of turquoise after that. I had a dark green 70 charger, never changed color, it is true I would have preferred another color, but it was good shape and that money supported performance parts. Where I was from, the fast guys didn't worry about color, but the monte carlo, grand prix, and other non performance 70s car owners did. Now, I traded a blue 73 318 charger straight across for my green 70 r/t in 76. To us, after 71-72 everything was a grandma car. Now some of you maybe wouldn't have traded the blue 318 73 for the green 70 r/t, because you hate green so much. But the green 70 was at least a muscle car. Now, I never got much grief about the color of my car from the other hot rod/muscle car guys, and didn't care much what the grandma car guys thought.

IIRC, I paid $400 for that car just as you see it. It was a 383 500, the previous owner pulled the engine & trans to put into a truck. I wish I would have kept more of the black interior, but I was running out of storage space.

Back in the day, late 70's early 80's most 68-70 Charger parts cars were either "just get it out of my yard" free, or anything under $300-$400 bucks for a running car, yes even R/T's, I remember missing out on a F8 69 HEMI Charger with a blown motor, nice car in 1977 for $800, but again that was a lot of money in 77

I picked up a few freebies, usually it was the Dad or the Wife getting rid of the kids/husbands "junk", other than a few free ones the cheapest Charger was a 70 500 B5/B5 383 auto for $40, guy just wanted what he paid for the 4 "new" tires (which were all flat from YEARS of sitting) had a nice NOS passenger fender on it, most I ever paid was $500 for a 70 440 4speed R/T, I was mostly into E bodies, of which I parted approx 300-350 Cuda/Challengers from the late 70's thru the late 90's, a couple of dozen Chargers, RR's, SATs, etc, etc, mostly B and E's, A bodies if they were sunroof or 340 cars,...the days of finding them in the back/front yard of every other house are long gone, but GOD! a lot of them were Green!  :icon_smile_big:

Here's one you may enjoy. It's a 69 Charger in its original F5 paint. Here's a picture the day I dropped it off at my detailer's place.

$150 later, this is what it looked like. The old enamels can really be woken up.

My first car in 1979 was 69 Charger. I towed it home, put a new timing chain in it, and drove the wheels off it. Thanks goodness it was a $150 green car. If it were any other color I could not have afforded it. Green can be good  :icon_smile_tongue:

Agree--Our cars were sold in the colors that moved them to the public at the time.

It's just weekend fun-I have a full time job during the week. The trick is to invest in some quality time saving tools and then just do the same cars over and over! I am notoriously cheap on tools but I bit the bullet and bought 2 new Milwaukee Fuel impacts (1/2" and 3/8" drive) and they have revolutionized the way I work on cars. Between the impacts and doing only SRT8's I can completely strip and disassemble an SRT in about 12-15 hours (about 3 partial Saturdays). As I strip parts, I take pics and list on eBay. I usually only work on the cars on Saturday and I box sold parts in the evenings after the kids are in bed. I am slowing down though. I used to get a full Saturday to work and now I'm down to about 3-4 hours per Saturday.

To be fair to him, whether he had a Daytona or not does not drop him having an opinion on a pretty horrible paint scheme. That's the joys of an open forum. I don't like it either...if it's a real Daytona then it's just wrong if it's a clone then who wants a clone of a melon...lol.

I've been called worse. I like pretty much anything with wheels and internal combustion engines. I happen to like 70 chargers, and have a connection to ef8 green ones. I spent a bunch of time and money and built one, and am pretty damn proud of it.

Now, if you have a green car, and want to paint it some other color, of course have at it. Your deal. And if you did an exceptional job, or something different & cool, I will appreciate it. And, if not, I probably will walk by it.

I actually have no opinion one way or another about that watermelon car. I don't think he has any business calling green cars VILE, though, no matter what the history is with that car.

Do you actually expect to be able to bad mouth someone elses car ON COLOR ALONE, and then present something like that and be beyond reproach. That is respectful? Do you think that the guys with green cars are sitting reading what you write, and hanging our heads and saying "Ya, he's right, my car is VILE, I really should part it out. Do you think that with the amount of money we spend on these cars, they are green by freakin accident? I say, if you want to criticize other peoples stuff, show us what you got that gives you the credentials.

If you grew up in the 60 and 70's as a motorhead, this is how it was when it came to customizing your ride, no "crackheads', just 'potheads' back in the day customizing and painting cars

Seriously though, the car was created just as you see it in late 1969, photographed in the Hamtramck factory holding yard, seen occasionally parked in the Executive Dodge Main parking lot, even turned into to a poster by Chrysler Photo Studios, made a few rounds with the "New for 70 Dodge" road shows at various ISCA events around the country, and rumored to be have been owned by Robert McCurry, Chrysler Exectutive, and the "Father" to many programs, including the Aero car program...the car remains somewhat of a mystery as to how, why, when, who, etc...and may perhaps always be?

The Factory built a lot of showcars, plus had their dealer network program of the Rapid Transit System (RTS) touring the country's dealerships, so cars like this were the "norm", if you don't know what I'm referencing, then you won't get it?, or perhaps your a few generations younger than me?

The car is a clone of the original, it's basically my "calling/business card", if your going to make repro Tona/Bird parts, why not have a business "model" that people will remember, whether they dig it, or not, they always remember it, beats driving just your average Daytona or Superbird, I just wish it didn't have to be green on green  :nana:

either way here's a few vintage back in the day pics...

I don't think he has any business calling green cars VILE, though,

If you had read my earlier post regarding "vile", I said that most motorheads back in the day regarded any green car, esp dark green cars "vile", and were often the victim of a quick spraybomb black or grey primer job...I know the truth hurts, but that's the way it was, now while I have no love for GREEN coloured cars, I can appreciate the time and money someone puts into their vehicle, I don't have to like what I see, they have to live with it...but there's no need to get all upset Francis  :icon_smile_big:

Jeeze, I restored a car back to stock looking, and you recreated that. Whoever made the first one, the welded on nose is cheese no matter how you slice it. Some stuff should be left for dead. And that's the truth you have to live with.

If you grew up in the 60 and 70's as a motorhead, this is how it was when it came to customizing your ride, no "crackheads', just 'potheads' back in the day customizing and painting cars

I actually like the car, but the last post only makes me think back to college in the 1980's where we could by national bohemian in returnable bottle for $5 a case (I think) and then get back most from the returns.  Don't worry, I'll get to the point.  The only problem was it turned your turds green.  Now that was something that made me think about buying another case.... but then again it was a really good deal. :nana:

Don't feel alone, red is not one of my favorite colors, although I don't mind it.  Personally I look more at the quality of a car than it's color.
I like most colors except some of these newer cars running around with paint that appears to be the color of cement. I just don't get that.

I am struggling with changing the color of my car and since it's in a million pieces, now is the time to decide, but I am considering white over the factory f3 green.  It's a 69 Coronet r/t hemi car.......I'm ditching the column shift and going with a 4 seed/Dana 60, non numbers, so it cant hurt to go with a color change...?  I have not seen an f3 in person and there aren't a whole lot of pics out there for a 69 Coronet f3, with green vinyl top, black butt stripe, black int. to gauge the combo.  White just seems to look good on a b-body to me....although f6, and f8 are really nice.

You got to ask yourself what is it, your doing in this refurbishing endeavor?, do you have intentions of selling the car after completion?, building it as an investment?, and/or concerned with future returns on your investment, if yes to any of these questions, then your stuck with putting the green poo back on...

If your of the mind that your enjoyment of the vehicle is the only paramount concern or desire, then build the car as you want it finished because you have to live with it, IMHO it's just a machine, meant to be repaired, altered, modified to one's liking, it's a factory hot rod, they modified it from it's stock offerings, no reason not to continue in that venue, it's not some archaeological ruin that has to be restored to original, preserved and worshiped for generations to come, it's just a conveyance of mechanical means

Dayclona hit the nail on the head. :2thumbs: Keep in mind though this is an original Hemi car. Consider that this is a high dollar car restored and a color change will affect it's value more than it would say a 318 car. I have an original 69 Hemi Charger. Its is original F3 green. Not my favorite color and I would not have picked it if I could have ordered the car new. But the key here is I could not / did not order the car new. I was seriously looking for a original Hemi Charger when I found it. I'm glad I have it whatever color it is. There are a lot of red, blue, black & white Chargers. But only a handful of Hemi Chargers exist today. Color isn't everything. Back in the day I don't think color ever won a race.  :Twocents:

Iv'e gotta say when the unpopular F3, F5 and F8 colors are done well in a base/clear combo they look much, much better than the original paint jobs.

Lots of great answers above. Personally, I think F3, when it's fresh, is a great color, but to each his own. F6 is a striking color, especially when paired with white top and stripe. With a real Hemi car, switching much on it at all will impact resell value much harder than other cars. As long as you're aware of that going in, and you don't mind, then go for it.

My gut tells me to keep it f3....Its still a long way off but I was leaning green 60/40.  I'm still going 4 speed/Dana....now if it were only a Charger!   I regret not keeping one of the Chargers I have had, but they all led me to the Coronet pretty much free , so I can't complain too much.  In the last three years I have had a 70 RT 4 speed fy1 6 pack Charger, 69 RT/SE r4 sunroof Charger, and a 69 f8 Charger 500 440 auto all sitting in the garage...... Life changed a lot over the last three years between making babies and opening(and selling) an auto repair shop.

Thanks for the replies!

Nice find!....is the mud up to the rockers, like it looks, or is it just a build up of leaves? Would be nice if the belly was not on the floor.
Title: Re: Green car haters
Post by: ElDoradoCuda on April 28, 2017, 12:16:26 PM
The mud touches the rockers in some places and not others.  There are several other cars there - some of which survived ok.  Others did not.  A 65 Mustang Fastback I pulled out was completely gone where it touched the mud.  The car also has severe rust at the rear section of the roof and tail end of the car.  It may be a parts car, but is so original I'd like to save it if possible.

Here's hoping. Certainly looks better than a parts car from the one picture. Motor and tranny present? Or am I just being too hopeful. Impossible to find things like that here as Chargers were never officially imported to the UK back in the day and still aren't...pity.

Thanks, original engine and transmission are still in the car.  It is 100% complete and, like the Mustang, was just parked when the family bought something new.  Even the battery with the red vent caps is still on it, correct air cleaner, etc.  Mechanically it is very basic for an R/T - 440 4bbl, automatic, 3.23 open rear.  Some interesting options include a/c, power brakes, hood pins, luggage rack, console, am/fm radio, leather buckets (surprisingly good condition all things considered), and I believe the hood blackout treatment.  Other cars next to it aside from the Mustang, and mostly not salvageable with a few exceptions, include 1938 Buick 2 door, 55 Chevy 210 2 door (6 cyl car with 327 swapped in during the 70's.  327 seized and car was parked there), 55 Chevy 210 4 door, 65 Mercury Comet Caliente Convertible, 55 Ford Crown Victoria, 4 VW bugs (only interesting one is a 63 that survived ok), and a few other old Fords and Buicks.  All were viable cars and most of them running when parked.  Then left to rot.

Then left to rot.

i wouldnt say thats a basic r/t, i have a green 70 r/t thats alot more basic than that. with no a/c, am radio, no luggage rack, no tach, 2.94 open rear, no hood pins, manual drum brakes and just vinyl seats. ide be interested in that green 70 you found if it ends up being too much work to fix for ya

Thanks CB, I'll post a bunch more pictures of the car when I have it home and can take good pics from all angles.  As it is now I need to cut down three trees to get it out that actually grew after it was parked, and it is sitting only 8 inches from the Buick next to it.  At a minimum it will need a hood, A pillars, everything under the rear window, trunk pan, tail panel, sections of the quarters, etc,,,,

I've been a fan of dark green metallic cars since I was a kid and even had a dark green metallic Stingray bike with a white banana seat.  That's why I'm really hoping this RT/SE holds together when I try to pull it out of the mud in two weeks.

Oh Man, your are in for a rust surprise.  I hope to see it rescued asap.

I had the surprise already pulling out the 65 Fastback - what a mess!  I'm just hoping this one is a little better.
