Title: About to start back after 3 1/2 years!
Post by: Bulldog69RT on August 22, 2009, 11:35:53 AM
When I was 15 I saved up about 1200 bucks to buy a 69 dodge charger. I found one on Yahoo in Fayetteville, TN (i lived in GA) for $2500. It was a '69 Dodge Charger R/T with a 400 and 727 out of a '71 charger. The floors were gone, the trunk was gone and the tail-light panel was like a sponge. The guy gave me all of the interior, chrome, rear glass, full quarters, bumpers, and a buncha other little parts to complete my dream. Me and my Grandpa started working on the car, he taught me how to do body work and I spent days on just one body panel. I started working at the feed store in town to pay for parts. I ordered full floor pans, trunk floors, and paint, bondo and fiberglass. I sandblasted the entire interior, replaced the floorpans with my grandpa and he replaced the trunk pans. The car was sanded and primed from the front fenders to the doors and the floors and interior painted black. We found the rear half of a '70 charger in a local junkyard and my grandpa cut the tail-light panel out of it. I joined the army when i was 18 and the car has pretty much sat on blocks since then. I get out of the army next month and im moving back to the south. I started ordering parts again this week and hopefully my grandpa's parkinsens will let us finish the car. Its been 4 years. Heres some pics... I ordered the RH trunk extension to finish the trunk on friday. Next to get ordered is a rear valance.

cool project. Nice that you're driven to restore car. Most kids these days want latest model car and then put some speakers and rims on them and that's their "project" I admire anyone who puts time/effort into restoring a classic.

I really appreciate yalls comments! Im pretty darn exited to get down there and get started! My grandpa has tons of step-by-step pictures on floppy discs in his computer desk at home. Once i get down there ill be able to post alot of awesome detailed pictures!
Im planning on pulling the 400 and the 727 out and selling it this winter sometime. Once I get the bodywork done and painted and put the glass in, Im gonna do the suspension. Dunno what im gonna go with, brands etc.., but its what im gonna do. Then I want to buy a 440 shortblock and fresh 727 and start building the 440. Aluminum heads, cam, etc.. I want the body to look as it did from the factory, that same green color w/o the R/T stripe, just the emblem. And the interior the same as stock, but I want a ratchet shifter!  :2thumbs: Ill definitely come on here and ask advice as I go, my grandpa is a mustang guy. Ive got a few more pics ill post in a few

Oh I get that all the time. My grandpa tells me "If you would have wanted a mustang, you wouldnt have had to buy any parts and we could have got it done in no time. But you had to fall for a Mopar." Haha. Ill probably restore a '65 mustang one of these days. I definitely have the resources.

Enjoy your build. You will find out you can build 3 65 Mustangs compared to one second gen Charger. Repo Mustang stuff is cheap.

Ouch! That camaro is pretty rough!

I'm out in Washington State now. I hauled the Charger out here with me when I moved. And I just bought a house, with my own garage finally! So Im now able to work on it. Im thinking of building a stroker out of the 400. not 100% though, Im still sleeping on it.

oh thats cool i have some adopted family out there. i lived out there IN late 80' and early 90's and visited every summer up until 1998. I lived in marysville , everett , and Mukilteo. There is a great little lake on the western side of the state with good lake trout and a type of lake salmon fishing.

It will look stock inside and out, just a little bit wider wheels and 15's. Beef up the motor/trans and suspension. Still debating on the color. I was wanting to go back with the ol F5 green but lately Ive been seeing some other colors catching my eye. I dont know, Im sure Ill change my mind a few more times before I paint it.

Ive posted this somewhere else awhile back but here is the cowl before and after I cut it. It was worse than I thought it was going to be. Someone in the past filled it with bondo. It was a mess.

Sorry they ain't the prettiest, but it just happened that I needed to cut out a lot of what was bad on yours to get to what was bad on mine.  I'd have been more careful had I known, but it looks like it will cover about 90% of the damage.  It just needs a little massaging to get to fit again.  Glad to help.  :2thumbs:  I know exactly what you're dealing with.

It covers more than I was expecting.  :2thumbs: It's looking like there will just be one small area I might have to fill.
It's a heck of alot better than a $400 dollar lower cowl.

I got a few left over Charger pieces layin' round Bulldog. You lemme know if can help this thing move ahead. I'll do you right on the prices.
Most of what I got is pretty much trim stuff. I got the three piece trunk set, two sets of taillights for '69, bumper cores, top of door trim, back window trim, sorry, no vinyl top trim, two front valances, etc.

It snowed all day here today but I still got a few hours of work done on the car.
A: I cut out the bad area to make room for my replacement section of the lower cowl.
B: I fit the new piece.
C: New piece welded in. (Sorry for the crappy pic) I still need to smooth it out a little. Next I just need to spot weld the chimney peice, finish the weird oval patch piece, and weld in the side piece. But the hard part's done. Hopefully it wont be so ugly come next week.

I sandblasted the rest of the firewall and most of the upper radiator support. Im ordering the lower radiator support piece, left inner fender and upper cowl on tuesday. I'm also buying a larger air compressor to speed things up.

Nice!  I bought one a couple months ago...  I had to go with the 110/220v as I don't have room on my panel at this time to run the full 220v.  It is affecting productivity but not as much as a lack of time to work on the car.  We have to add a new panel to our house and then I can 'trench' a separate panel to the garage.  It will make life much easier in the long run!  What is your CFM on that baby?  Around 12 or so at 90 psi?

To bad you couldn't have located a rust free cowl. Cheapest metal replaced on my 70. $200 for the cowl. Just the time to seperate the too and blast/prep.

Compressor is 19.1 scfm @ 125psi and somewhere around 17.5 scfm @90psi. Figured I'd spend the money and get one that would last me a lifetime. Plus, it has a great warranty that comes with it!

Ya, the lower cowl is a pain. I figured it won't be seen once the car is together, might as well just fix the holes the best I can and throw the upper cowl on top of it. Because I really dont feel like spending all of that money on a panel you're not going to see. I probably won't get any work done on the car this weekend. I gotta work saturday and Im going to spend Sunday setting up the compressor. Im ordering the upper cowl and left inner fender tonight. oh, and the fender to cowl brackets as well. 721.00 AMD

Inner left fender arrived today as well as upper brackets! Still no upper cowl. Atleast the inner fender will give me something to do for awhile. Once I get done with that there is always more sandblasting to do. I havent blasted with the new compressor yet, im looking forward to it though!

If I can stop getting the wife pregnant. Babies mean quiet in the garage and a thin wallet. But I wouldnt trade it for the world. Though I do wish I had a shop away from the house. One day.

Keep on moving forward.

Finally got my Harley finished and got back to the car! I got an Argon/CO2 tank for the welder and got the inner fender in. After installing it with sheet metal screws and putting the fenders and hood back on the car to make sure it would fit. I ordered new tips for my sandblaster this week so hopefully ill be able to finish sandblasting in the next week or two.

Nice man. Keep at her!
I added metal all the way to the leaded area and patched up my window pillar..
So... do I melt all of the lead out and make a panel? Or will metal filler work? Or do I lead it myself? I'm stuck.

Bought a new house with a nice size shop! Cutting spot welds! Ordering full quarters etc.. soon. I was very surprised of the condition of everything under this quarter. Almost every piece is solid! Hopefully the other side is the same.

I would be shocked if AMD doesn't make the lower corners for a charger since i bought AMD lower corners for my 68 Roadrunner.

I've searched and it seems AMD doesn't make the corners, rather it seems like the combination of a new dutchman panel and sail panels would be necessary to recreate the corner. I've got the same issue on my Charger.

Recreates the top outside portion. If the outer is gone usually the inner part of the channel is too. We had no choice but to remake it.
