Not hanging out because they make such a mess picking out only their favourite sunflower seeds and discarding all the rest leaving seeds everywhere. (they become very selective when it's offered freely)
Also it's not necessary for most of the year as there's plenty of feed around and we don't want to encourage them to just hang around all day waiting for handouts.

Having said that though, we always pitch in when times are touch such as in drought and we do have a couple of regulars that have made our place our home and know how to beg real well and always get away with it.

No because we don't feed them so they don't hang around. They fly in every day to have a drink and or bath and then fly off again. If we're sitting out they may come in close to see what's on offer and sometimes they sticky beak through the windows and doors but that's it.

We have Corella's too and Galahs but those birds prefer open fields so they're across the road and although we sight them all the time, they don't fly into our garden often enough to take pics.

We also have a pair of wedge tail eagles with two chicks that nest in a friends back yard (it's scrub and natural bush beyond his one acre of garden) who lives about ten houses down from us and it's fabulous to watch them hover in the backyard. But once again it's too hard to get pics of them.

Surprisingly not too often. Just a dish brush and hot water does the trick. The bird baths are another matter entirely. They get filthy and need cleaning out at least every other day.

Thankyou.
I know, one minute they're taking a bath and the next they're having a drink. You'd think they could learn to do it the other way around.  I know I don't drink my bath water.

..........just a thought.........they've never crapped in it though so I guess they have some standards.

Not anymore Bruce. We did have when we first moved up here some 30 years ago as we weren't going to leave them behind but we decided we wouldn't own anymore after they passed on.

Our ground birds such as the yellow breasted robin is slowly disappearing as more and more people moving to the hills have cats. When we first moved up here, they were in abundance.  They'd actually sit close by when we were digging in the garden and weren't at all shy grabbing any worms or grubs that surfaced.
And even though we have a cat curfew in place, not to many people are abiding by it.

Interestingly enough though, Burmese are wonderful cats. Our two cats (pictured) both fetched. If you threw a small ball or other object, the cats would chase it down and bring it back and lay it at our feet ready for another throw.

Not only that, they would also go into the neighbours yards and steal small objects and bring them home. One time one of our cats pinched a cardigan off a chair left outside and dragged it home. I saw her coming up the driveway with it and every so often she'd stop and look about her to make sure she wasn't being chased down. I had to keep returning neighbours property and pretty soon, if anything went missing, the neighbours new where to come.

One time one of them pinched a hat form the new neighbour (she was outside gardening and took it off)  and after the woman had finished I saw her looking all around for it totally bemused. It was too funny. I didn't give it back till the next day.

Ha ha!! Sadly both cats have passed on now. Besides, I don't know of any cat that can cart home an elephant.
By the way, this is Mrs. Fred. I wrote that about the cats but forgot to sign my name. My schizophrenia sometimes leaves me confused.

Thankyou John, it is pretty special. And not only is it a haven for birds, all animals are welcome. During our last drought even the resident Echidna had a hard time finding water. He was just going round in circles so Fred said to me......he thinks the Echidna is looking for water so I went and put some out for him and this is the result..........
He spent a good 10 minutes just drinking.

Hi Tom,
I don't think so.
Echidna's are native to Australia and New Guinea.
Baby Echidna's are called puggles.........cute huh?

Here are some facts for you to peruse...........

Echidnas are small, solitary mammals[3] covered with coarse hair and spines. Superficially, they resemble the anteaters of South America and other spiny mammals such as hedgehogs and porcupines. They have elongated and slender snouts which function as both mouth and nose. Like the platypus, they are equipped with electrosensors, but while the platypus has 40,000 electroreceptors on its bill, the long-billed echidna has only 2,000, and the short-billed echidna, which lives in a drier environment, has no more than 400 located at the tip of its snout.[4] They have very short, strong limbs with large claws, and are powerful diggers. Echidnas have tiny mouths and toothless jaws. The echidna feeds by tearing open soft logs, anthills and the like, and using its long, sticky tongue, which protrudes from its snout, to collect prey. The short-beaked echidna's diet consists largely of ants and termites, while the Zaglossus species typically eats worms and insect larvae.[5]

Long-beaked echidnas have sharp, tiny spines on their tongues that help capture their prey.[5]

Echidnas and the platypus are the only egg-laying mammals, known as monotremes. The female lays a single soft-shelled, leathery egg 22 days after mating, and deposits it directly into her pouch. Hatching takes place after 10 days; the young echidna then sucks milk from the pores of the two milk patches (monotremes have no nipples) and remains in the pouch for 45 to 55 days,[6] at which time it starts to develop spines. The mother digs a nursery burrow and deposits the young, returning every five days to suckle it until it is weaned at seven months.

I nearly got a pic of a wombat this morning. Taking my daily walk this morning I went through the forest and up ahead I saw a big fat wombat crossing my path. Unfortunately as I crept closer to get the shot he heard me and scampered of into the undergrowth.

They're mostly nocturnal which is why you don't see them much during the day but here in the hills I see them out and about a lot on my walks. Mostly returning to their burrows after feeding through the night or even still grazing where they don't feel threatened. But even though they look cute and cuddly you wouldn't want to approach one with the intention of patting it.
They grow to one metre in length and can weigh up to 70 lbs and are very strong and a startled wombat can charge humans and bowl them over.

And although I scared mine off today, they do defend home territories centred on their burrows, and they react aggressively to intruders. Humans who accidentally find themselves in a fray with a wombat may find it best to scale a tree until the animal calms and leaves. Humans can receive puncture wounds from wombat claws, as well as bites.

So to sum it up, they're best enjoyed from a distance.

I don't either, but know enough people that do.  I prefer fishing, in which, you have to get a permit for that as well from the state.  What erks me though is the state makes you buy a tag to kill a deer, but they won't pay you if one of their deer jumps out and wrecks your vehicle.

Could you include some sound effects with some of these, too?  I have only been to Australia a few times, but what struck me was all the weird sounds those birds make.  The warding (raven?) sounds wreaked havoc with my jet lagged family.  We were half awake and had no idea what was making that sound.

If you think our bird calls a strange XH you need to get out in the bush (or just our back yard for that matter) at night and listen to a possum calling. When we first moved up here from the suburbs, I walked around the place in the dark when all of a sudden I heard this noise.....a sound I'd never heard before.......it sounded like a wild, BIG cat.......it scared the stuffing out of me. I had nothing to protect myself with so I hightailed it back inside and told the wife about it. Imagine how foolish I felt when we found out it was just possums calling out to one another. Here was me thinking I was going to be some wild animals dinner!

Yes, on the whole they're mainly here in Autumn and are pretty timid but we have a pair that are with us all year round. They seem to have made the bush beyond our backyard their home. And they've known us for some years now. They come for a feed when food is in short supply. Which seems to be every day at the moment ha ha!! and are not afraid of us.

Have you ever seen the movie Birds?
Title: Re: Fred's Birds
Post by: Fred on November 17, 2013, 02:21:20 AM
Yes, it's one of Erika's favourites.
When we first moved to this place there were a couple of currawongs hanging around so Erika got some bread and went to feed them. (we were only just getting to know some of these birds.........don't see them in the suburbs). Next minute there was another and another and then still more and more and more. In the end there must have been around 60 birds all at her feet. It was the time of year they come through and it got pretty intense because they were all flying at her to try to get a feed and she was a bit concerned that one of them might accidently hit her in the eye with it's beak.  That was definitely a bit of a "The Birds" moment except for the fact they weren't attacking to kill. But we did decide it would be safer to come inside until they cleared off. She did have to slide her feet along the ground for fear of treading on them.
Now we just have our resident pair and their young (we seem to have a pair of everything lol) that have made our place their home and we don't feed the ones that are just passing through.

If they're like the pigeons in my area, I bet they're a mess to have around.

Do they have a nice song to them?

Oddly enough there's no mess with the Kookaburras even when they sit around all day. The Magpies and Currawong on the other hand leave splotches everywhere. (one lot white the other purple) But now that we have Pippa patrolling the yard they tend to pass through rather than hang around so no more bird droppings.

Kookaburras don't sing, they laugh. It's a sound we never get sick of. If I had to define Australia I would sum it up in one word....kookaburra.
The Magpies have a lovely trill. The Currawong make a sort of haunting sound.

So, if I show up in Australia, and get laughed at when I get off the plane, that's a good thing? :icon_smile_big:

Spent the first several days wondering what that sound was - thought some sort of wounded cat - but not right - then I learned about currawongs.  The other sounds boggle my mind.  My favorite was a bunch of chiming wedgebills singing in the round.

I love the haunting sound of the Currawong as they come through every Autumn. Some hand around all year but the majority just pass through.

Have you ever heard possums screaming in the night? If you're not familiar with that sound it can scare the pants off you. (or worse  :icon_smile_big: )

We are looking forward to having king parrots around and the other Victorian species when we move there.

We will miss our family of Magpies though when we move. Been hand feeding them for about a year now and they are so tame, almost like pets really.
