hey guys
here's a link to the bodyshop hell thread. they had my car for 20 months.
http://www.dodgecharger.com/forum/index.php/topic,5376.msg63238.html#msg63238
backyard body shop is open again. got my car back, 68 charger r/t :boogie: :boogie: :boogie:
it came back in parts but at least my friends ex partner took the time to weld in the tank strap holders and he installed the new tank and sender for me . nice job undercoated the top of tank then put the trunk pad on. he felt bad how it ended. my so called friend walked away and never looked back. Karma will get him back one day.
man! its good to have one of my chargers back. all the plugs are fouled so its running like crap. i 'm changing the oil tomorrow. i think there's gas it it from starting up and pulling it in and out of his shop. looks like it's been in a war. i test fitted the fenders, hood, doors and trunk lid today she looks good. although all that stuff has to come off again. i just wanted to see it together again. looks pretty good, very straight. i put the new gas cap and ring on. since now it's outside in my yard. I've been keeping it inside my outdoor car capsule but to do the body work I'm just using a regular cover with plastic taped over the openings. i want to get it done in 6 weeks painted and all.
this is whats been done so far.
new quarters
trunk center and extensions
outer wheel wheels
new rear valance and corners, although the corners have to be cut out , cause they bondo'ed them in.
doors had a big hole in them for a sport mirror. welded shut
hood was a mess looks great now
fenders needed alot of help. there pretty good now. still alittle rough. nothing a big hammer won't fix.
all the metal work was done by his partner . excellent work.
here are some pics. i will share the rest of the restoration with you guy's as i go along . all work will be done by me and my friend Emilio. i want to take it to the whiskey Cafe in september. wish me luck with the weather it hasn't stopped raining since i got here back. can't do bodywork in the rain. Rene
some more
all the vent frame hardware is at the chromer, thats why i have plastic on the windows.
Looks like it's coming together. Can't wait to see it finished.
Keep plugging away you are getting there. Good to hear you have it back in your hands.

QuoteMAN THOSE SOME BIG ASSED PIPES STICKIN OUT THERE... i LIKE!
there going, i bought original looking one's .
the weather broke and we got some more work done. the under coating behind the front wheels looks great , like the day it came from the factory. I'm gonna power wash it today and apply a new coat on top. as you can tell I'm not building a show car just a killer driver. that i can be proud of and maybe win some local shows. I've owned show vehicles in the past and there to much work to maintain but I'm not cutting any corners on the work. using the least amount of bondo that we can.
the trunk was done correctly. he drilled out all the welds. then removed the panels. then installed the new ones as close to factory as he could. i also replace the tank brace or trunk support I'm not sure of the name. i still have to weld in the spare tire holder and the two jack holding piece's, no big deal. the trunk needs to be cleaned up. alot of the weld needs grinding down and it all has to be d-a'ed. so it looks right. it's coming along. Rene
Looks like trunk still needs work, 9 out of 10 they never cut the drain plug holes ? 9 out of 10 that big line that crosses both halves does not line up & a pain in the butt to get it to line up most of the time so it usually dont, Could'nt see yours though, was hidden under some stuff. If done right a continuous welded bead will run the entire lenght instead of a few spot welds. If new Trunk Extensions put in dont forget to make your own (or reuse the old ones if possible) Tailight wiring harness holders. Dont forget to slap in that messy seam sealer around edges as factory did? Do all this & then your Trunk is right. :yesnod: LEON.
Quote9 out of 10 they never cut the drain plug holes ? 9 out of 10 that big line that crosses both halves does not line up
howdy Leon
the center line is there and fully welded, nice and straight, they put seam sealer on it and on most of the seams. the trunk extensions are brand new and fully welded not spot welded. as i said before, the trunk does need more work . some of the spot welds need grinding down. (i think thats what your seeing) also needs da-ing to clean it all up. as for the drain plugs. i don't know if i am ever gonna put them in. I'll decide that later on.
should have another update later in the week with pictures. Rene
:popcrn:
howdy guys
a storm came through here on wensday, wiped out the canopy. the weight of the water ca lapsed it. knocked over some body parts and just f-ed everything up. today, Friday we got back to work. power washed the front of car. 38 yrs of crud on the front of the motor. i can see the original color of the motor. very cool. i checked the timing chain. real bad. this is the worst chain I've ever seen and the car ran good. ya gotta luv those 440's. tough motors. they take a beating and keep on ticking. also found two small quarter size holes in the inner wheel wheels. i welded them up myself. i was kinda proud of my welding. I'm getting better at it.
fenders are done. i used eastwoods rust encapsulater on the inside. just as a precaution. quarters are done. i hit the inner seams of the new quarters with rust bullet. with a brush. I'm gonna cover the inside of the quarters with undercoating. got all the jams done. they look real good. here's some pics. I'll hit ya with more in a couple of days. wheather permitting. Rene
Nice work, BigBlockSam. :2thumbs:
Any chance at a close up of your weld job?
you can't see the weld anymore. i grinded it down and did some bodywork on top of it. then sprayed it with black primer. Emillio did the finishing work on it. i have a little welding to do in the trunk. i'll take some pics of that one when i get there. Rene
good job, so you spraying it right there in back yard? What compressor are you using?
hey silver
i got this old compressor. it's made from parts of two other ones. it's got a good size tank. plus it's a stand up which is better for spraying but it has trouble keeping up with constant use of the d a.. Rene
Lookin good BBS, hang in there bud, "git er dun" :icon_smile_big:
can't wait to see it finished.

Mike
looks like you know what youre doing. Might save you money in long run doing paint/work yourself. I could've helped too if I were closer. I still gotta do all the bodywork on mine but at least Ive got garage now and its not gonna spend time under 2ft of snow another winter.
thats one of my biggest dreams , is to have a big garage with a lift. Rene
Looking good Rene, you are giving me inspiration since I will be doing my work outside as well.
i couldn't do it with out the help of my friends. thats something that is very important with this hobby. i'm good with motors but as a body guy, i'm still learning. Rene

It's gotten to the point where my "friends" don't even answer their phone anymore when I call. And I haven't even started working on my car yet! Bastards.
To be fair, I've only got one friend that still lives in town and compared to him I'm a world class body man, mechanic, etc... so he'd be useless anyway. The two friends that would actually be helpful and would be able to figure out what to do are both out of town.
Although another friend of mine that could help but just doesn't have the time did stop by today and hook up my air compressor for me (the electrical part). I'm doing a temp set up right now so I'm just gonna run the hose directly out of the compressor. After I move I'll do a permanant set up.
Speaking of air compressor, BigBlockSam, you sure your compressor is in a place where it can get good circulation? Looks kind of cramped in there to me. Then again, you gotta go with what you got, and mine is currently sitting under and outdoor shower. :D
Keep up the good work Rene :yesnod: , I have a large shop and gave up on doing body work myself years
ago. I did all the body work on my 69 Superbee in 1982, it was very hard work and the car was
in great shape, my hat is off to the people that can do good body work :yesnod: :yesnod:
Dan
Quoteyou sure your compressor is in a place where it can get good circulation?
that is the best place i have for it. the shed is packed. it's only 10x10
Quoteit was very hard work
thanks for your kind words guys .they really do help keeping me motivated . yea bodywork is very hard work. i thought that after we finish the charger we would jump on the roadrunner clone but I'm tired already . i will need a break in between.
i have several friends that help me but the main man Emilio is an old friend but i am paying him for the job. he is out of work and can use the money. since we are using all my tools and my place, he gave me a price i could not refuse.
it's over 90 degrees out today and I'm having a hard time getting motivated to go outside and do some work on the charger . seeeeeeeeee yaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa Rene
hey
car is close to paint. got the doors on, fenders on and quarter panels done. i finished painting the grill, it came out nice. i chose to black out the whole grill. i think it looks tougher that way. i posted a picture of the way it should look like on the car. i painted the engine in the engine bay. when i changed the timing chain. i will post before and after pics when I'm done assembly of the motor. moving rite a long. Rene
this is what the grill should look like. tough!
looks :scope: good

i don't see much interest in my little thread. about my restoration. so this might be my last post on this matter.
man! it's been alot tougther then i ever expected. the heat, the rain, running out of whiskey, and me trying to stay focused. yea i know life's a beach. i lost my first canopy to the rain. it calasped on me. i lost the second one to the wind it took off and messed up some cars in the parking lot next door. so f-it I'm working in the sun.
OK, i took the motor to the short block, rebuilt the heads, valve springs, guilds, lifters, timing chain, water pump and anything else i thought would help.
the grill is in and it works, opens and closes, the lights work.
please don't think anything was easy, it wasn't. every other bolt broke and i had to use fire to get them out. other bolts where stripped. this f-ing car fought me every inch of the way. I'm warn out.
now it runs better then ever, and were going to paint Monday nite. i talked to a guy who owns a body shop here by me. he said i can rent his spray booth for $150 for a nite. so I'm going there on Monday.

Thanks for the pix Rene. It's cool following the resto. That last progress pic is just that, your lastest progress,
Whiskey & work never mixed well for me, usually the beer lead to bench racing.
thanks for the kind worlds. i know you guys have the same luv for these chargers as i do and your words mean alot. today is sunday and i sat out side and just stared at the car for an hour as i ran the motor. i can't believe it's at the point were it's almost ready for paint. after all the crap i went through with the bodyshop, paint day is here. a couple of things still have to be tweaked and i have to remove the bumpers again. i got the re chromed vent and window frames in. they look good. the whole car will need a good detailing after paint. we also cut the valance ends that were bondo'ed in by the previous bodyshop they came out good. we're gonna go to paint by tomorrow nite, i hope.

Rene, keep posting. It's more than just replies that show interest in a post. As I type this, you've had 651 views of this thread, roughly double that of any post on the front page of Paint, Body & Trim! :icon_smile_cool: :icon_smile_cool: :yesnod: :icon_smile_wink:
I'm painting where the vinyl top used to be on a 69 Charger in the backyard. The bugs, dust, leaves etc. landing in the paint make for a challenge to keep the paint quality and look respectable.
Looking good man. I love seeing Chargers like yours right before paint, when the lines are so visible. Your car looks really nice and straight. I'm sure it will be an absolute beauty once it is painted. Congrats and good luck!

i never thought of it that way. thats very cool.
OK august 21, rented a spray booth for $150. for that price it's a no brainier.
I'm spraying the base and my bud is spraying the clear when he gets out of work. 3 coats of black and 3 coats of clear. i decided to assemble part of the car before painting so i would not scratch it up in assembly after paint. Rene

And I really like the all-black grille. I'm probably going to do the same with mine.
he still got silver grille surround. Paint came out good for first time. I would've put more clear coats so that way you got enough to cut/buff later on.
Looks great Rene :2thumbs:

You're a brave man painting the car black. Other than high metallic colors, black is one of the hardest to make look right. Looks like you guys pulled it off. Can't wait to see it finished. Now you get to start on the black daytona clone. :icon_smile_big:
hey guys
I've been pulling the car around the front of the house every day . so that the sun can bake the paint. the front of the house gets sun all day. now it's been raining alot so not much work can be done but i hear the rain is good for the paint also. i hope to have the paint sanded and polished by the weekend so i can reassemble.
QuoteNow you get to start on the black daytona clone.
yes :boogie: but that is a differant matter. the next car i do in the back yard will be my roadrunner clone and that will be in the spring. I'm gonna paint that one white, much easier color to paint. i just need help with the metal work, i will paint that one by myself. i enjoyed that part of the project the most.
i have been neglecting my business to get the r/t done. i can't continue that. so i have decided to have the bodywork on my daytona done by someone else.
i have a friend that in my last conversation with him on the phone said, I THINK WE'RE GONNA HAVE TO BUILD YOU A WING CAR.
I like that idea. i know he builds killer rides.
so hopefully my daytona is not very far away. i waited 48 yrs, for a wing car, i guess one more can't hurt. :yesnod: :boogie:

when i get a chance, and it stops rainning i can tell you the size of the tires. i don't know the size of the rims, they where on the car when i bought it
Quote In your backyard? how did you do that.
i found a good spot between the house and the fence that has slats in it to block any wind. then i wet all of the ground to hold any dust down. it was a perfect day. no wind. i sprayed it rite there 2 stage black. i tack raged it after the first stage. and crossed my fingers that the weather held. it did. when i did the hood of my roadrunner it rained and messed it all up. i just sanded it down, tacked it and sprayed it again. it came out nice. thanks for all the kind words guys it's been a long strange trip but we got r done. Rene
Too bad we don't live closer together. Would love to get the hemi challenger out and cruise around with that black charger. People around here don't like cruising around much, and we have such beautiful country to cruise around in.
The car looks great. What are you thinking about, wheel wise? I think Magnum 500's would look great. I love them on my 69 runner. You can buy the rims, caps, lugnuts and tires for around $1100 from Summit. My runner has 15x7's on the front with P235's and 15x8's on the rear with P255's.
You can do show car paint jobs in your back yard with proper skills
Saweeet job Rene, backyard and all. Lots of so called painters not doing that good in a booth.
What's wrong with the wheels. Buff them out and they'll come to life. I especially like the white letters NOT showing. Next to my torq D's, those are my favorite aftermarket wheels. If you go stock, Magnums would look beetchen with all that black, IMO.
Nice job man.
thanks for the kind words guys. it's been an act of love.
Quote People around here don't like cruising around much
people here love to cruise but there so much traffic during the day that you have to do it at nite. did some nice burn outs with her today. started to smell alot of gas. i have to fix the hole in the grommet of the tank.
you hit it on the head Larry. some nice Magnum 500's with redline tires.the fender tag says it came with redlines.
found these on ebay ,not a bad price,

yea , i like these wheels alot but this is an all #'s matching car and i've been faithful to the history of the car. i think magnums would look great. i'll save this rims for a future project . more of a racing type mopar. Rene
If you get new rims, wonder how much it would cost to ship those rims you have now to seattle? ::) $ I need cool rims for mine.
Nice job Rene! :o
i hope my black will come out that nice...
Very nice rene. Its hard to believe how nice it came out being painted outside and all. I do my paint work in my own garages, and even with washing down the walls and floor, as well as taking a leaf blower to the popcorn ceiling to blow off dust, and even shooting the base coat with the door closed (mistake if you ask me) I still had to deal with dust nibs that would settle on the surface. I can't do it outside because of all the pollen that is always floating around. I almost always have to go back and sand the final coat and later buff it out to make a nice smooth surface.
You said earlier it was a two stage paint, could you explain that a bit? like basecoat/clearcoat, or primer then colorcoat? After painting my own stealth with house of kolor pearl basecoat/clearcoat, I love painting the basecoat but absolutely hate doing clearcoats as I was always fighting sags or runs (the stealth has alot of curves on almost every panel, and spots where the roof met the fender was a run haven) I'm kind of looking forward to working on the flat sides and top flat surface of the charger body.
What temp was it outside when you painted? I seem to have the best results here when it is close to 70 degrees outside.
A question regarding your grill also, when i took my grill out, the eyebolts that go thru the front of the fender into the fenderwell snapped, does anyone sell these eyebolts or am i going to have to figure out how to make it work with aftermarket ones? I don't think the factory ones are long long enough now to hold in place properly. Did you use all the original bolts when putting everything back together? or use new bolts/nuts?
hi
i just noticed your last post.
Quotebasecoat/clearcoat
thats what i used . diamont paint. thats what my painter likes to use. i reused all the bolts i could and bought some new ones from ebay. here is the car today . still needs a good polishing and cleaning. i just found the rear wheel mouldings , so i will be installing them next . i changed the wheels with the ones i had on the daytona. the car is very dirty in these pictures . i was storing her away in her car capsule for the winter.

Rene, I got to say your car looks awesome. :2thumbs: You've really done an amazing job on it.
However, your pic resizing program sucks it big time. Use this one, the pics will turn out great: http://www.photosize.com/ Scroll down about 3/4 of the way and you'll see a box titled "Width: Selectable - Enter a pixel number in the width field." 700 works good for this site. No more sawtooth edges on your car. :icon_smile_cool:
BTW, your car should have been the first one out the door of your friend's new body shop. Instead of keeping a friend and creating a good base of word-of-mouth advertising he probably lost a friend, a good reference and a lot of integrity by blowing you off. I bet you're much better off without him though.
