Title: Roadrunner market -pictures-
Post by: F8-4life on July 29, 2017, 01:55:57 PM
Anybody keep a close eye on the 68-70 Roadrunners & there market?

Found a Real RM 1969 roadrunner 383 4 speed, sure grip axle.
Pretty nice car, no visible rust or bad body work on exterior panels, under neath is solid. I believe the front pans have been patched and it may have had 1/4's done in the past.
Green car currently painted q5. Full interior (white), good condition, seats have been redone in correct covers.
No console, hurst shifter.
Missing fender tag, clean title...Car has been in a garage for 10 yrs, owner says it runs, drives just needs brakes gone through, maybe fluids & general freshening up for the road.
It could be had for 15k, maybe a little less. I was eyeing it for a resale at maybe 20k or so, any thoughts on the current market? Good idea, or bad?

Thanks!

if it does not need painting, runs & just needs brake work 15k is a great deal.

Its currently turquoise/white guts which is a pretty nice combo, although not original.
Paint looks to be good, could use buffing/polishing & missing the bird decals.

Friend just sold a restored 1968 383 4sp numbers matching car for 23k for reference.  Clean Nevada car.  Car was red with black/silver interior.  Crazy how much less money the Plymouth's go for compared to Dodge's right now.

'cuda is King in the e-body market

Charger is King in the b-body market

it has little or nothing to due with numbers/rarity/initial cost

This.

It's all about the bodystyle.  Best looking to modern eyes = highest value.

Prices seem to be ALL OVER the place on ebay, craigslist & even Carlisle. Same thing happened when I was looking for my '70 Road Runner several years back. I was seeing variations in price & condition of the same basic car that would lead you to believe one was a rusted Pinto & another a Hemi show car. I looked at about 15 cars, narrowed it down to 4 that I looked at in person.

1970 Sport Satellite for $14,500, 383-2V, automatic, A/C, console, dark green with green vinyl top, repainted & looked nice except for some bubbles under the top. After taking it for a ride I could tell that the motor, as well as the rest of the car, was tired, worn & that the repaint was simply to sell it. It was a decent car, but it was going to need a lot of work in the near future, including rust under the top.

1970 GTX for $23,000, non original 440-4V, 4-speed, pistol grip, buckets, burnt orange all around. This car was nice, but someone with no knowledge of old cars had flatbedded it & did some damage to all of the frame rails & left large tear marks in the holes from hooks. The interior was a little questionable with home made repairs to the arm rest pads & an old tattered headliner. It was a track pack car & should have had the Dana but had an 8-3/4 rear in it. It was raining when I saw it so the seller didn't want to take it out for a drive. He was firm on the price but I thought it should've been better for $23k & passed on it without thinking about coming back to drive it. He dragged it to Carlisle a month later where it had $33,000 written on it.  :eyes:

1970 Road Runner for $16,500 (forget the motor in it) that was set up to race & advertised that it could be street legal with minor work. It had a fuel cell, no heater, no wiper, a roll cage, gutted interior except for two bucket seats that came from something else. It ran nice but I didn't drive it & the body was questionable. It looked good in photos but the blue paint was faded & there were some small bubbles forming in the typical B-Body areas. It wasn't a horrible car but was missing a little too much & needed more work than I wanted to deal with.

1970 Road Runner Coupe for $17,500, non original & non stock 440-4V, 4-speed pistol grip, 8-3/4 rear, air grabber hood, fresh paint on a straight body, new interior & new everything else including the engine. The guy had a photo album of all the body & paint work done, too that included new quarters & outer wheel houses. There were several things that still needed to be done but they were mechanical or bolt on issues. He had the trans & the radiator but said they were cores that needed to be redone. It still needed a few things like the exhaust, fuel lines, some air grabber parts which I already had, headliner & a carpet. This was clearly the best one for the price that I had seen, but still needed to be finished so I passed on it. A week later the car was re-advertised for $16,000 & now a deal I could NOT pass on so I bought it.  :2thumbs:

Maybe it's me, but for $15,000 I would expect something in better shape based on the way you described it. Pictures would help, but I understand that if you're trying to get it, you don't want to lose out on it.

I'm surprised by the low values of road runners. They seem to be much more affordable than a Charger 68-70 or e body.
I'm not sure if the low values apply to the Hemi or 440 6bbl. road runners. I suspect not. Does anyone track prices for the Hemi or 6 bbl. cars?

I paid 14,500$ for my Coronet which the interior/paint was done. Older paint job but still looks nice. Needed a motor and suspension work/re wire and a bunch of misc stuff.

I'd ask 22-25k as it sits now with all the work I've done to it. Hard to find a Charger in the same shape for that kind of money. But I like being more unique than the Charger crowd, not many people even know what a Coronet is... haha

Id say most people know what a coronet is. If you count all Super Bees and and Coronets would the production number be about the same as the Chargers?

I believe if you ignore the convertibles and 4 doors they still made more Coronets than Chargers in 1968 - but not by much. Chargers were a premium priced car while the Coronet spanned everything from stripped base models to loaded R/T convertibles. There were a LOT of them! I like them and will hopefully own one some day.

I couldn't count the number of times I get asked if my car is a Charger. I'm talking about the younger generation.

I didnt even know what a Coronet was until I found my car! haha

I know I've had kids tell me they like my Challenger lol "70 Charger RT". The guy I bought my Charger off of had a 70 Coronet RT. He had it for almost 40 years and the Charger only about 10. He had to sell the Charger to post bale money for his daughter and son n law. I tried to buy the Coronet when she got in jail again but he somehow got the money again to post her bale.

Yea sounds like this car at 15k is not as hot of a deal as I thought.
Forget it.

Anyhow, I am getting my mopar fix another way, my pops is going to sell me his '78 dodge shorty van!
Way cheaper then the runner and defiantly not as mainstream.

No, it's a major project car & needs everything but I was told to take it away & I did. I have given it to my Son & we are going to work on it as a Father/Son project and pass the torch to save another one.

I think that most DODGE people know what a Coronet is, not most people in general.
Coronet production was far higher than Charger production, especially since the Coronet numbers include 4 doors and wagons.

Road Runners are certainly cheaper than Chargers, but because 99% of them lived a hard life, good original ones are hard to come by, and are priced accordingly.

I gotta say I'm pretty darn excited about this. I've always owned rough projects over the years and this would be my first actual "nice" classic.
Being a B body 4 speed is just that much more.

it doesn't look like Q5 to me in the pics.
It seems to be too light IMHO.
But it can be due to pics taken in bright sun.

Doesn't matter too much anyway as it hasn't a fender tag/Broadcastsheet. So it is nothing for the diehard collectors

I sold my 59 elcamino yesterday and today me and the owner pulled the plymouth out and I had a chance to look her over.
Was impressed with it overall. Looks like a great car for the $$.
Should have it bought within the week.
Compared to my 59 elco this car is a gem!
Owner is a cool guy and cutting me a break as he paid 15k for it a decade ago.

That is very true, but because they were cheaper, Road Runners were more common and more expendable. Every car guy in their 50's & 60's has stories about a Road Runner back in the early 70's because these people either had or knew someone who had a Road Runner. However, not as many have the same stories about Chargers.
