Title: Anyone installed different seats in their charger?
Post by: Chargeraddict on February 05, 2007, 05:35:58 PM

Im just curious if someone has had luck installing seats from a newer car? I dont think I have the money to invest in redoing the buckets right now, seeing as how the covers are 300+ each. I could see newer seats being more comfortable anyways, Im not worried about the value of my car either, its never leaving my hands.

I had a 73 RR Clone once with a set of leather buckets out of some late 80s Ford car.  They were the same as T-Bird/Cougar seats only they were grey leather.  Maybe from a Lincoln or something.  Anyway, they were really comfy.  The guy I bought it from was really big and he needed more leg room.  SO he ditched the bench seat and put these in it.  He had mounted them back pretty far too.  I could slide them all the way back to the back seat.  There was no console in the car, but I bet one would have still fit.

I dont have any aftermarket seats in a Charger, but my 79 Blazer has seats from a newer Nissan mini-van.  They are perfect, I have power everything too... even lumbar.   :icon_smile_cool:  My only recommendation is dont let go of your original seats because one day you will want them back.

i've seen a bunch of different combos.... chevy camaro seats, newer dodge intrepid/stratus leathers, even durango seats in 68 charger.
look on ebay... mcmahon mopars seem to have descent priced covers?!?!? or A-1 canvas too

I've spent some amount of time deliberating that move and in my travels i have noticed that mid '90s Jeep Grand Cherokee's leather seat's stitching pattern closely resembles the 1969 Charger pattern... saw a pair on e-bay for 300.oo but they were too far away to ship..

Kabb reports the plymouth laser and doge daytonas have great seats too,.. Kabs a big lug like me,.. too...  :icon_smile_wink:
there are some custom cars like autodynamics that have trick seats too...

lettuce know what ya' find out pls..

Yep - Corbeau GTS II. They sit about 2" lower than stock and are EXTREMELY comfortable... LOVE EM'!

My 73 had a bench seat and I wanted bucket's so I modified it.
I had to weld on the inner seat perch on both sides to mount them.
I went with the corbeau seats and they are great.
I installed a five point restraint and it works great.

ya know i used a measuring tape to check the '71 road runner (third gen essentually) distance from the front buckets outside bolster to the absolute outside width of the car (at the wheel well lip) and it was an amazing 10 inches. so the thirds are quite a bit wider then seconds... approx 5 inches...
i can meaqser both tomarrow if you can wait..

this guy put newer sebring seats in.  If you have a 68, then the leather will match the vinyl ok enough. plus you solve the seatbelt problem too.

In my opinion, those Sebring seats look ugly. I'd really like an older highback seat, or something like 400/6/PAC put in his '73, but I don't have immediate access to a welder.
Title: Re: Anyone installed different seats in their charger?
Post by: dkn1997 on March 11, 2007, 11:07:57 AM
the problem with older high back seats is that they are, by definition, old seats.  If I was swapping seats, I would not even waste my time on swapping old seats for old seats.
If you are going for driveability, then an integrated seatbelt is nice or I'd go with corbeau's, some other aftermarket seat.
If you are not swapping out a seat for the purpose of driveability, then I would not bother, leave the stock ones.

dkn1997,

I understand where you are coming from, but I'm not swapping old seats for old seats. I'm starting with no seats at all.

I see, but chager addict, who started this thread, specifically asked about putting newer seats in his car, I was just addressing him .

In your case, you could use 70 highback seats.  my first '68 charger in high school had them and they were ok comfort wise.

Oh okay, I thought you were addressing me.

I would love some '70 highbacks but they are really expensive. Are there other same era highback seats that will bolt in?

I've always wondered how the 2000-up Monte Carlo seats would look in a Charger. With out measuring they look about the same size and plus you know old Charger low backs and Chevelle low backs looked similar , I seen a 71 Chevelle one time with the newer Monte Carlo buckets and I thought they looked great. Plus some were available with power seats, so you could wire that up. I just think if you wanted a newer seat that look somewhat similar to the old ones... you might want to check them out.

one thing you gotta watch out for on a 2nd gen is seat height.  high backs are cool, but too high and they don't look right.  Our cars are pretty low and the space from the top of the door to the roof is very small for the size car it is.  I'm 5'7" and in my stock 68 seats, my head is pretty close to the roof.

I saw a 2nd gen at carlisle a few years ago, had 97and up grand prix seats in it.  the ones that have square space in headrest.  I have a grand prix and always thought they would look cool in an older car.....NO NO NO, did not look right at all.  although 70 highbacks look ok because of the pointy shape of the top maybe....

try to keep them so that when you are looking from the side that the top of the headrest does not disappear into the roof..
check out this pics of mr angry, see the space, high back seat...but does not get swallowed up in the tiny window opening  that ma gave us.

I gave up and just went with this classic corbeau set of seats for 250 each.  Much cheaper for me than trying to make my old seats look new and they have a better bucket look I think.

And they are in the original mounting position of the '68 seats? No extra welded brackets on the floor or on the seats?

70 use same first half 71 Chargers and 70-first half 71 E bodies. At least they look the same from the distance, so probably will be enough changing the seat tracks from 2nd gen to those laters ones to install them on 68/69 to match with holes and floor shape

:yesnod: :yesnod:  And they are as comfy as all get out!  But.......  they do not recline forward past the upright position because they came out of a 4 door car.  And with the seat all the way forward there is not much room to get into the back seat.  So that just means that fat Charger Fans old girlfriends festively plump chicks cant squeeze in the back seat.  :icon_smile_big: :icon_smile_big:

what all did you have to do to get those seats to fit in car ,and do you have to run the belts all the way to the back like they are in the picture or could they be mounted to the front ,looks good ,you bought those from summit?

So Norway, do the Summit seats come with like tracks and studs or whatever? And when you say they "almost" fit, did you have to drill new holes or did you oval out the existing ones?

Noup, i used the ones that was on the Summit seats..
I made some brackets to raise the seat 1".
You make them or you can buy them http://store.summitracing.com/partdetail.asp?autofilter=1&part=SUM%2DG1151&N=700+4294922468+400304+115&autoview=sku like this one.
Then you can drill the holes in the raising bracket where you want them.
The width of the Summit seat is perfect for the Charger.

Thanks for the quick reply, and thank terrible one for asking all the questions i needed answered, the seats look bad ass very nice ,its goiing to be fun for me i put in a wole new floor in, so there no holes at all in my floor, but i think theres braceing under the floor where the holes go, did you have to drill alot into that braceing to get them to fit snd was that a pain to do?

I have a 68, do not know the meassure for the 73, anyway fitting the seats in a 68 was APOC.
As i see it you got to raise the seat aprox 1", i am not a litte guy..
So making some brackets is a thing you got to do, and then the bracing under the floorpan will fit ;)

Alright, I'm sorry, but I'm still confused.

Norway, so you bought the seats from Summit that had tracks on them. Have a link to that?

Then what did you do? Oval out the holes in the floor and mount them up or what? Sorry, I'm sure I'm missing something easy. I just can't do much by means of fabricating stuff. . .

Check out the instructions for the brackets on Summit's site. It makes things a bit clearer.

If you have conformation that the seats aren't too wide, you won't need to do any fabricating or modifications at all to the car, other than drilling a hole in the summit brackets.

Looks like the brackets mount to the seat, but the other side of the bracket (that goes on the floor) is basically untoched so you just need to drill some holes in the bracket, put a bolt through them, and that's it.

Seems like it should be really easy.

i have looked into this and mid '90s grand cherokee leather seats have exactly the same seat styleing as '69 chargers. back a few years ago now, there were some on e-bay for a few hundred bucks i forget the exact figure now...
i seriously thought of getting them then, but, not knowing the seat track dimensions and/or how to wire them into the electrical system, i passed I guess too that GCs being four doors they wouldn't fold forward either... :shruggy: all those things togeather spell out to me they'd be a problematic can of worms...  :-\
  carry on..

I don't know if this is the same where you guys live at, but you can pickup some plain factory import seats about 10 years or a little older out of a junk yard for about one hundred dollars for both seats and have them redone at a trim shop ranging about $300 to $500, I like the factory seats more than after market seats because they are made a little more durable than the after market seats and you can find used parts for them if you need them.

You can make some bases out of angle iron if you have the tools and weld them to the factory sliders, I just made some bases for some 93 Nissan 300ZX seats to fit a 69 b-body, the angle iron cost under $30 the bolts, nuts, washers and spacers where $20, I cut off the factory tabs to level the sliders off flat to weld to the angle iron.

The measurement for the spacing between the b-body factory seats holes was 13 7/8" left to right and 10 7/8" front to back, the inner seat holes near the drive shaft are level, the outer front holes need a 5/8" spacer and the rear needs a 7/8" spacer to lever the seat out with the tracks that where on the 300 seats.

If you get seats from a junk yard make sure the frames are not broke or rusted bad, put your knees on the seat area and grab the seat back and try to move them they should not move too much they should stay pretty ridged, if you hear any clicks or sounds the frames may be cracked or the adjusters maybe broken just make sure all of the parts work on the seat if not just find another set.

Hey Brock Sampson, did you have any trouble bolting those into your '68?  I have a '70 but I can't seem win the right seats on ebay so I'm thinking of trying 3rd gen seats if they will fit.
