Title: Sound Deadener Poll - OPINIONS???
Post by: bill440rt on June 07, 2009, 02:38:17 PM
OK, there's been several threads on sound deadener here. I'm going dizzy reading up on them. I'm at the point of installing some in the interior, insides of doors, etc.

What has everyone here used, their likes/dislikes, ease of use, results, etc?? Why is one better than the other? Where did you get it, or who has the best price for that particular product?

This should be the end-all thread for this topic that seemingly has no definitive answer.
Let the games begin!

Bill I used the eDead stuff from eBay.  It was easy to put down & was the cheapest which appealed most to me ;)

I only used it under the rear seat area & up the wheel wells..

I used Lizard Skin for many of the reasons listed in the other threads.

I can't say much about it as I never drove the car without it and I have yet to drive the car with it.

I posted some info and pics on the install in this thread:

Why use anything - We want these cars to be like they were back in the day no? If you want quiet drive your new car. To each his own - it's your car...... but I don't get it......I guess I'm a fossil  :-\

OK - Flame away!  :icon_smile_big:

Hey Chris, thanks! I thought that was the stuff you mentioned.

I don't want to sway the polls any, but so far I've been looking into the Fatmat products. They seem to be similar in quality to Dynamat, at a fraction of the cost. There are 3 levels of products they offer. They are cheaper still vs the eDead sound deadener, if I'm comparing a 100ft roll.

maxwellwedge, this is the first Charger I've built that I'm actually adding sound deadening to. I've never done it before. I fully understand your point! But, I want this car to be quiet inside, and I plan on installing a decent sound system.

It's okay, I'm a fossil too.  The sight, smells, and sounds of these cars are what set them apart from modern day cars that can actually outperform them.  It's the primitive part that makes it for me.
But I don't decry anyone else wanting to add soundproof.

I just bought dynamat extreme bulk package off amazon.  133 bucks vs 200+ that you find on most automotive sites. Haven't put it in yet, but it'll happen within the next two days.  I also let you know how much of the interior I can cover till I run out, and post some pics as well.

This is what I use.

http://www.secondskinaudio.com/

It was reviewed a few years ago and beat all the other products on the market.

Plus they sell more than just butane mat. They have different products for different areas and problems.

I used this stuff on my floor pan mainly because I use it at work and I know it lasts a long time.
I also didn't want anything that would be a pain to remove later (nothing with adhesive)
It made a big difference and its really cheap.

I used dynamat a long time ago, but more recently switched to edead.  Works better IMO, and more cost effective.  There are probably other good ones, but I can only offer my opinion on the two I've used.  Having said that, in the end the differences will be pretty minimal - use what you want, it'll all help a lot! :)

OK,
Well, after some more research, I've finally settled on eDead vs FatMat for several reasons. The primary reasons affecting my decision were: 1) Material, 2) Thickness, and 3) Cost.

I limited my choices to foil-backed adhesive sound deadeners, the car is too far along to consider spray on sound deadeners.
The adhesive sound deadeners are either asphalt or butyl based, butyl is more effective and the better choice over asphalt. I considered Dynamat, FatMat Mega Mat, and eDead 80. All of these are butyl based sound deadeners.

Mega Mat is 60-70mils, eDead80 is 80mils, & Dynamat is a lowly 67mils. I chose a 100ft roll. After researching prices, 100ft of Mega Mat was $240 shipped. eDead 80 is on special for a short time directly thru Elemental Designs, 100ft shipped to my door with a roller is $215. Dynamat Extreme is available in 36sq ft bulk packages at $134 each (cheapest I found), 3 packages would have been a whopping $402!!  :o

So, I got thicker, more effective sound deadener based on the same material at nearly 1/2 the cost! Research pays off.

If you're considering the eDead80, act fast because it's on special for a limited time. It's currently offered at the same price as their eDead45, which is a thinner, cheaper sound deadener (45 mils) vs eDead 80 (80mils). eDead 80 is currently $1.00/foot.

Photos will be on the way, Neal!  :2thumbs:
So far, I have the package tray, rear floor/seating area, insides of the FRONT halves of the 1/4's, and insides of the doors done. I've gone thru over a 1/3rd of the stuff already, nearly half. I still have the front floors to do. I'm not doing the roof or firewall behind the dash, as the headliner & dash already in and I used the factory sound deadener & insulation in these areas. The stuff is pretty heavy, I'd say the box of 100ft of the stuff weighed in at over 30lbs.

I should have enough, & I might put a strip or two under where the trunk mat would be, but not cover the whole trunk floor. It's probably not necessary to cover every square inch to get effective sound deadening out of the stuff. One thing I did notice, is that when you knocked on the doors before they sounded like metal. Now, they sound like there's 10 inches of body filler in them! I suppose that's good AND bad. At least the product is doing it's job.
I'm leaving the front floors alone for now until after the engine & trans is in. I may have to dimple the floor a little bit more to clear the trans, and it would be easier to do without the sound deadener on the other side.
Stay tuned for pics!

Here are some photos of the eDead installed in the rear of Project '69. I stopped on the inner wheelhouses where the rear seat divider goes, that way you don't see any when the trunk is opened. Same with the inner quarters. I just did the front half, where the rear interior is.
You can see inside the front door, etc. Really was simple to install, I still have enough left over to do the front floors.

wow, i must sya that whatever you use, install something!i just layed some cheap carpet i had here and i used an old roll of sound deadner i got from pepboys years ago. nothing special, just a 4x6 sheet of insulation. it made a HUGE difference inside the car. and i only had enough to do the from about half way up the firewall to the rear of the front seats. i cant imagine the difference if i get more and do the whole car.

Ok guys, what's better, 45 or 80 mils? I ask because I don't know if 80 is just "too much" and 45 is "just enough" or "too thin" and it's better to go with 80mil or what.

I just bought a 100' roll of Fatmat 80mil for my wife's vette and her 61 metropolitan to cut down the noise and keep some of the heat out.
Also got a set of 4 into one side pipes for the vette to keep out the heat from under the floor, this thing is like driving in an oven. If it works good im going to use it in my Daytona clone while its all apart.

Hey Neal, thanks!
Yes, it forms pretty well. You still have to make relief cuts here & there, and press it into the little crevices and stuff. If there are air pockets, the less sound deadening effect it will have.
This stuff is 80mils (eDead 80). I'd say it's more than 1/16", but less than 1/8", so I guess that's around 3/32"?  :smilielol:
For inside the doors & 1/4's, I just cut it into smaller strips to fit it inside the openings. Doors close with a "thunk" and feel like they have 2ft of bondo in them.

I got the eDead 80 because it was basically the same price as the 45. It provides more sound deadening effect. A lot of times people buy the thinner stuff because they don't want or can't spend the $$$ on the thicker stuff.
If you have a question as to which product should be used where in a vehicle, just call them. That's what I did. They were very helpful and informative on the phone.

Not sure how well this stuff will protect from heat from the sun. They sell other types of sound deadener, you might want to check with them on that.
I just used the REM repro roof insulation, kind of a lightweight jute padding. Then again, I'm in NJ!  :smilielol:

For my floor I will use something that looks like yours bill but have to check what type/brand. Ron recomended it.
