Here's a pic of the numbers stamped into my trunk lip.
It appears to read "A" and upside-down "U" 264661
The VIN: RM23UOA164661
Is this typical?
The upside down "U" is actually an "0"
Thank you, Wingnut426.
Do the "A" and "0" stand for something?
Is it typical to find the sequence number incorrect?

The "0" stands for 1970 & the "A" stands for the assembly plant, Hamtramck
Thank you hemi68charger.
Is the sequence number digit (2 in the place of a 1) a mistake?
I think "A" stands for Lynch Rd. or I have been thinking wrong a long time.. ;)
The A is Lynch Road, where all Superbirds were built.

Oppps... My bad...... That is correct... A is assembly plant, but Lynch Road as corrected......

Appears to be... What does the core support stamping reflect? The same thing as on the trunk? The fender tag and VIN sequence number matches, no?
It would be worth checking, although many Bird's never got the core support stamped, or had just the outer parts of the numbers stamped on. Approx. 60% are stamped there. I read once that there was an issue with the stamping on that area of these cars due to the prescence of the latch tray/etc.
Trunk lip '2' looks to be a mistake, perhaps a late Friday build!
My core support and trunk lip are both stamped with the same format:
What area is the number stamped into the radiator support?
It may be under the radiator coolant sticker. It should be in that area. Having a single digit incorrect or two digits transposed happened some times. It is not common but it is not unheard of either.
Thanks Brennan!
OK.....I'll post pics if I find the radiator support numbers.
Are those the only two places to look for stamped VIN numbers?
Factory mis-stamps are common. See http://www.hamtramck-historical.com/factoryErrors.shtml
& http://www.hamtramck-historical.com/numbersMatching.shtml for other known examples.

On my tranny you can see where they "bounced" it and smacked it twice. These were all hand stamped. I even saw a 70 roadrunner with no trunk stamp at all
Thanks for all the replies!
The VIN, or at least part of it, should show up on:
The dash VIN plate,
the fender tag,
the driver's door sticker,
the trunk lip,
the radiator support,
the engine,
the transmission,
the build/broadcast sheet,
and the title/registration of course.
If you have all these you are golden.

well Im good everywhere other than not having a stamped core support, Im not sure where that's a concern with so many not stamped?
Oh, I went with a repop door decal because I destroyed my original while trying to save it. :brickwall: I do have pictures before I got creative. :P
Does the VIN appear on one or both rear quarter panels.
I was told to look on the left side.....and that's where it was found. I didn't think to look on the right.

Thanks, just found mine this week on the left but I have not looked on the right. Did not want to disturb the weather stripping anymore than what I did. It would make sense for both to be marked to verify both quarters on original to the car.

Did the frame rail one get used then? I thought that didn't begin until mid 70's?

Arnie, as not all of those places were VIN locations every year, you may want to include the years for which those locations apply.

I've never seen a picture of a VIN on a frame rail from any year. Does anyone have a picture of that location?

True. I assumed that since the car in question is a Superbird that the discussion was limited to 1970 B-Bodies.
