That 500 looks great... 4-speed too, mmmm.
Seen both and driven one. I can tell you that both are in very good care.
What did the C-500 sell for?
Nice car and options.
Sweet !!!! Makes me wanna convert my 500 to a Foe-Speed...........
As I recall 80k but I'd have to go back and look.
Good finds. I recognize one of them. The daytona wearing the Northfield trunk badge is a 426 car.The Hemi 500 appears to be from VA by the center placement of the inspection sticker on windshield

Wasn't that Hemi500 sold via a live internet/phone auction or something a little odd several years back?
Could have been, I was busy with some other things that particular day and didn't get to see it cross the block, car stayed in the US though.
Man... I'm digging this black with red stripe thing........ On my 500, what about a flat black paint job with a red stripe?
Just checked and it went for 104,500 in 2010. Thats with the commission and stuff.

Was RM involved with the car prior to that, maybe in the early 2000's? That photo
sans hubcaps or wheel covers just rings a bell with me.
I don't recall but I'll check.

Are we talking about a separate 500 here or are you thinking its the same as the one at the top of the thread?
I compared some underhood details Im thinking same car Reminiscent of 2 different daytonas with same engine compartment :Twocents:
The two 500s look like they are different colors on my monitor.
check how the underhood turn signal wiring looks on the 2 for starters. They both to seem to have body color on the heaterbox nuts.Doesnt appear to have right master cylinder.Looks like a disc brake booster. With non disc master cylinder
http://compare.ebay.com/like/360488290614?var=lv<yp=AllFixedPriceItemTypes&var=sbar
Not sure how we got to talking about the T5 cars but yes it is the same car.
Okay, I get it now. We are talking about a different car in two locations at the bottom of the thread and it has nothing to do with the one at the top?
Right. The one at the top is a completely different car.
I believe this is the top of page red 500

thats it , !! looking like he only run that decal for one race ,
The bottom photo is Dr. Tarr's car waiting in line to get in the back gate at Trenton NJ in mid-1970. It is probably the same car as the Daytona, just running as a C500 here. It didn't take too much time to swap a car back and forth. Trenton was a 1.5 mile paved track, but when NASCAR made that northern swing, they ran several short tracks. Hence the need to run it as a 500. Photo by Steve Mirabelli.

Both of those were Chrysler Engineering owned cars like the #88 Daytona. The Superbird was used in testing like the #88 and is the car seen in the Supercars book with the yarn tufts taped to it. There is no evidence that Richard or Pete ever raced it. The Superbird was given to USAC racer Norm Nelson by Chrysler in the summer of 1971 and was lettered as the Hub Chrysler Plymouth #2 car.
The 1971 Road Runner was the development car seen in various test photos. It has a Road Runner hood and full width front spoiler which were not used in competition.
1971 rules limited the front spoiler width to no wider than the frame rails, hence that odd looking spoiler on the Dick Brooks Daytona which appeared in the 1971 Daytona 500.

yeah thats true , think it might even be some charger sheet metal, or hand made stuff metal fitted to another car or something , don't look lile any B-Body under the hood or a bits of both :-\
Will have to take some time later on to help with some actual translations. Having grown up in Thailand should not be too hard to figure out where this car is from. Now when I last went over to Chiangmai Mai I did see a 1968 Charger there sitting in a field next to my parents office.

Great pics Doug,
What I find amazing is that in that pic of the 201 mph run is that the car does not look stressed at all! Not much body roll, tires do not appear to be begging for mercy, heck the wing does not look to be deflecting much at all!
I realize the physics of a car negotiating a turn on the high banks redirects some of the lateral forces downward but still wow!

If I didn't know better, it looks photo shopped! The radius appears extreme!

I recall when I was at Texas Motor Speedway during my MotorTrend Classic photoshoot, I attained speeds over 125mph and the car didn't seem to give a darn. I mean, I was stressing out physically more than my car. I got to the point after many passes at that speed I would let go of the steering wheel in turns 1 and 2. The car seem to know exactly where to go............ and that was on street production suspension........ I was truly amazed and astonished how the car handled at those speeds on that banking...

The corner radius is probably the depth of field of the camera shooting way down into turn one. I've seen that photo somewhere before, perhaps down at ISC. (flipped through a LOT of pics in 2 hours) If it is not the 201 run, it is still taken at Talladega. You can tell by the blackness of the still new asphalt.
It's hard to tell from the photo whether the car has the same fuel vent and rear window trim treatment that we believe the 201 mph car had.
I think the photo is made up. Look at the white stripes...
They look like the "corrrecton tape" used back then, and even today.
They don't look applied like they are real and following the track radius.
And they are different lengths!
If you look through the windshield, the track surface is different!
Car looks too big for the radius. If someone told me the high banks of Bristol, perhaps I'd buy that.
I agree - have seen it someplace in the past... In a race program maybe? :shruggy:
IMO - this is a touched up photo.
That is true. Pics in the past were touched up by hand for publication.

Re-painted vinyl top-bronze Daytona is XX29L9B383272.
It's originally a hemi orange car, all numbers matching.
I owned it from 1988 until I sold it in 1998 to buy DC-93.
Monroe Schellinger owned it, Ron Adair, Gary Dinsdale, me,
Harold Sullivan, ??? brokered to a guy in MN - I think...
383272 was a car that passed through a lot of owners and didn't want to get restored; although that has finally happened. Greg was definitely well on the way headed down that path with it. I was sure shocked when he up and sold the car. I don't think there was a guarantee that the car he was going to try and buy was going to pay off. So it was a bit of a leap of faith.

think espionage for the second gentleman
Hint: He liked big rig trucks and gained a nickname in the process.
I was thinking maybe Big Bill France, but the photo doesn't look quite like him (Bill had more hair). You'd think if it was a Ford guy on an espionage mission that ol' Harry would be pictured swinging a 1-7/8" wrench at him.
Somebody else's turn...

Apparently it's John Holman (from the Honker II reference), but you had to spoon-feed the hints/answers to me...
http://www.conceptcarz.com/vehicle/z11344/Ford-Holman-Moody-Honker-II.aspx (http://www.conceptcarz.com/vehicle/z11344/Ford-Holman-Moody-Honker-II.aspx)
QuoteThe team would get a preview of things to come when it arrived at Road America for its first race. Of course, the name of the car should have been the very first indication of the trouble ahead. John Holman had earned something of a reputation during his trucking days. He was known for being a little too fond of honking his horn. In a reference to Holman then the car would be called the Honker II. Unfortunately, in practice at Road America, it would be the other competitors that wished they had a horn as they would have used it to signal Andretti to give up the whole enterprise. Being more than 15 seconds slower than Bruce McLaren's pole-winning effort in the McLaren M6A, the Holman Moody team would decide not to start the race as a result of not being competitive enough.
Correct, it is John Holman.
Harry Lee Hyde had a story about his father and John Holman that he told under the tent at Monster Mopar. It was good, but I did not write it down and I cannot remember what he said. But it was pretty much in reference to that photo.

Sure is wild. Scenes like that and the problems (fires, slips, enviro issues) are probably what made normal people turn into the nuts.
Its amazing there weren't more accidents/injuries than there were during that era. :-\
Ain't that the truth. And now they all wear a full helmet and are in communication too.
Rick ,
my Dad's picture turned out a little bit better than mine by a fender and door ...

Seeing pictures of Richardson's orange Daytona brought back a lot of memories. My first job was at a "drive-through" dairy (Yes, it was California) and I would wait on him many a time. I remembered how cool the car looked and that I wanted to buy one, which I did eventually (well a Superbird anyway). At the time I drove a bright orange '69 RT/SE Charger with a half vinyl top. My friend and I would drive by Joe's house which was down the road in Cerritos at that time. There always seemed to be something of interest parked in his driveway or out on the street......good times. (Thank you Joe for putting up with us...)

Ramo Stott with John Marcum (founder of ARCA) in victory lane at Daytona. 300 miles down, 500 more to run next week.
Lem Blankenship (driver) with Ramo as crew chief at Milwaukee, July 1970. Ramo was running ARCA full time that season and Lem drove his cars in USAC.
Those are exhaust hoses taped to the tops of the doors to scoop some air into the cockpit.
Is Lem related to Charlie.

No, Lem is also from Keokuk Iowa, like Ramo, Ernie Derr, Don White. Lem's younger brother Gordy was also a Mopar stock car racer for many years. Gordy ran a Dodge Mirada in USAC, still with a Hemi up into 1984.
Was that considered the last Hemi to run in USAC?
Was there any others running a Hemi earlier that year of 84?

Pretty sure that is the last one in any pro level oval track series. Gordy's car started out as a 74 style Charger, wrecked and rebuilt as a Magnum, then shortened up to fit the Mirada body. I think he said he ran it close to 200 at Talladega.
I liked the Mirada. I think that's the only one I've seen live or in photo running in any form of circle track, I know there were more but it's the only one I've seen. Thanks Doug.
good pictures , thanks for sharing   :popcrn:
Another nice pic of Gordy Blankenship's Hemi Mirada. He commented on it.
"This car was brand new when this picture was taken at Springfield in 1980. This was either hot laps or time trials because we stripped a stud on the left rear while checking them before the race. Centerline Wheels was a sponsor for the series and had a thicker center, We put on a yellow wheel for the race. I ran 2nd to Rusty Wallace for 82 laps until a much overheated engine blew water all over the windshield and I had to pit. The race was one of the first ever covered by a new channel known as ESPN, so my sponsor (Jesus Saves) got some much needed exposure, The race was won by Ramo Stott."
Gordy's Mirada was later cut down further into this Dart for local racing. This pic is from 1999. Car still has this body, but a lot more dents.

Here's a bird that about 2 yrs ago I posted about trying to find the current owner to get him these pic's (& info of some it's previous owners & locations). Benny Hemi knew of a bird from Cleveland that matched the description pretty close, but iirc hadn't seen him/it in a while.
I would have liked to have found the owner 1st before putting these pic's on the net. But maybe this way they have a better chance of getting to the current owner through more people or he may search & find. This is the 1st time I think I've showed these to anyone.
This car was sold out of Owensboro, Ky. probably in the mid 90's as you see it in the EV2 paint. That pic is from ~1985-7ish time frame. Car was silver metal flake setting at that 1 man body shop in ~1984-5. I took these pic's at the time & I was the guy who put him onto the bird when he purchased it out off Muhlenburg, co. Ky. It's 1 of 2 local bird's that Zack wasn't able to work a deal on back in the day.

Our driveway at the family home, 1979.
The Daytona was sold to Ron Adair, later to odcis2.
The Petty Blue car was rusty but a great runner. 3.91 rear gears and a Tuff wheel. Fun to drive.
The green Bird I still have
The orange car had a dead engine and was sold to Jeff Bobst and his dad. The headlights were taped down for this photo.
The Imperial was a low miles car. It eventually was permanently parked with bad 4 piston brakes. Expensive to fix in those days. Shame.

The dust-trail 'Bird.....I remember it well. It was the first Superbird poster I owned. Won it at an auto show drag racing game that had real pistol-grip shifters.

And I proudly have it framed in my barn, above where she is parked.

Here's the pics I took of the "dust trail" 'Bird in 1987 (Englishtown, NJ).
On the second pic, the owner is standing behind the car.
And I took this one from the stands. The poster can be seen leaning against the front spoiler.
And this one....
You're very welcome. I remember kicking back and talking Winged Cars with the owner that weekend. Like I stated above, he was super nice.
I just found another one of the dust trail 'Bird.
And here's a couple more from that weekend. One is mine, and you can see the dust-trail 'Bird in the background. The other is on our way back to the hotel, following Randy Colegrove's 'Bird.
I remember the colegrove brothers from canjorie ny they were alway at etown
The 69 daytona across the way with mirrors under it my friend Joes.
http://www.dodgecharger.com/forum/index.php/topic,51069.0.html
If I remember it right, Randy had just finished the V-code, Tor-Red 'Bird restoration just prior to the 1987 Englishtown show. We were staying at the same hotel, and parked them next to each other every night. He was looking mine over, and said that it was missing the Pentastar on the driver's side front fender. I explained that Chrysler only put them on the right side. He said, "OH....that's why mine was missing the hole. I drilled it and put them on both sides." So whoever owns that car today, that's how it got there.
Somewhere around '89 - '90 Randy swapped it (and I believe cash) for a U-code, Petty Blue 'Bird. This was around the time that I moved onto drag racing, and no longer kept up with the Mopar community.
I called Randy a couple of years ago. He filled me in on the accident with his 'Bird during the Chryslers @ Carlisle event. And that he no longer had a winged car.
Back in the day, Randy and I would swap VHS tapes. I have since converted them all to digital format and have a stash of Mopar shows from mid-80's to the early 90's.

The "gas pump" Daytona picture is out of Hot Rod magazine in 1970. Brand new Daytona with the 15" hubcaps so it could very possibly been a hemi car or 440 4 speed at the least.
1970 fire cracker 400 , cant remember seeing this 3 part coverage / footage before :scratchchin:

Not sure the rules on posting a picture. I assume older stuff. This is around 1988 of a B5 bird painted Petty. Interesting it had chrome wheel well trim (obviously added after repaint). Was from Mississippi area states and had a few owners before I brought it up to Chicagoland.
(now let's see if I can post the pix - seeming to have a problem)

Sorry--Just saw this old post. ---I do believe that -is- the C500 I sold. One big clue (for me) is the cheesy spring antenna that I never got around to replacing. :shruggy:
It also sounds like mine cause of the hemi cam and louder than stock mufflers. :2thumbs:
I miss that car like I knew I would.
1996 or so. The is the B5 4-spd 440 I bought from Volo Auto Museum.
Probably 1988. Working on my first bird. B5 440-4 727 repainted to Petty blue. Horst Kwech's 1970's SCCA touring (tons of decals) refrigerator in background.
I met Horst Kwech at an Alfa club dinner in Milwaukee about ten years ago. He was the guest speaker.
I've worked with him since 1984. Drives a stick shift Miata still!
Was thinking of going solid blue nose, but ended up painting the black on the next week.

The block has a casting date of November 68, that is a bunch earlier than my Daytonas 5-69 date. Mine has a SPD of 6 05 69, and is the # block. And they show it is # matching. :shruggy: Wingman
I had history of the car dating back to the late-80s. The previous owner was a personal friend & he never touched the engine. I talked with owner before him in Washington state who did it over the first time. I've seen phony stamped numbers and the ones on that block looked pretty legit to me.

The Mertl Motors Superbird was local to me and the first one that I tried to buy in 1975.
The first owner was an older man who thought they only made 50 of them and was out of sight on his price!
Just last week I spoke with the third owner and informed him of this picture of the car.
Would anyone know how to track down the original picture?
Thanks! MJ

(the following is from a thread on MoParts in 2017)
Chuck, maybe you can clarify some things on this post. My Daytona was originally orange with a black spoiler. I made the mistake of painting it black but had it restored to the original color when I sold it. The man that bought it said his name was John D'Agostino. He's not the same one I've seen many pictures of. He lived in, I believe he said Warren. A guy called me several years later, I think about 1992 and asked when I was going to let John have it because he was buying it. I said your mistaken, he's had it since January 1987. He was being scammed. Then about 10 years ago some guy, I think he said he was in Connecticut called and wanted to know if I had the build sheet and window sticker, which I do have. He wanted it but I told him it wasn't for sale.
Also as far as Harlow Tire we never closed all though the front page article in the Observer was worded that way, we sold out to Monroe Tire and Muffler. We left on Saturday June 25th and they took over on Monday June 27th. They weren't going to change the name but many people didn't read the whole article. The article explained that we retired and sold out. To this day people ask our employees where they're working now.

i'm sure I remember seeing another Daytona or maybe it was a C500 used as a pace car , it had a checkered painted roof , think the car was black or red , the current owner discovered it when he removed the vinyl top , pretty sure that's how the story went , think I read it in a magazine / book , this was before wide spread internet 1990s, or at least before I had access to a computer .
There was checkered roof Daytona in a hemming story

Yes. The late Steven Juliano owned one of them.
So the story on this one is that my dad always wanted a Superbird or Daytona race car. He heard about a car that might have been a racing Superbird near Appleton Wis. So on a very cold winter day in early 1977, we piled into our '69 Olds and made the two hour trip to Appleton. When we got there, this was the "Superbird" that we had been told about. Needless to say, it was a pretty short visit. We got out of the car, took a quick look and decided it was a home built B-body short tracker with a wing added. Pretty disappointing. It would take another 40 years before we'd get the real thing in the garage. My dad would never believe it.

This was taken at a show at Wisconsin State Fair Park in late 1969. The Milwaukee Sentinel newspaper sponsored a show called Young America on Wheels. It was a car show, with exhibition racing on the famed Milwaukee Mile oval track. This car was provided by Dodge City, a performance oriented dealer which is still in business under the same family ownership today.

This one was taken at the Iola Wisconsin car show, probably 1977. The car had the bumper added by Harold Masche, who also owned the red white and blue Superbird that burned badly in a warehouse fire in the late 1990's. It's a real early Bird, V0A149xxx. Still around and has been restored.

This was one of the Les Bowman family Superbirds. The nose damage occurred at the Chrysler Proving Grounds at the National Meet in 1977. We got an unexpected invitation and driving tour of the PG. The Bowman car rear ended another Superbird. It didn't do much damage to the other car.

This was a mini-meet we held at my dad's business in New Berlin Wis in 1977. The F5 Daytona is Richard Tiffany's 11,000 mile car, now owned by his son Mark.

I believe the #84 car photo is Fred Matthiesen driving Woody Walcher's car. Woody had his #83 Charger 500 which I believe was a Nichels car. Woody told me that the #83 car was wrecked in a race. He had his #84 back-up car which I believe he told me was reskinned from an older model. Other pictures that I have seen of the #84 car show it with a tunnel back rear window. He could have had a Charger 500 front clip on it.
Woody told me that he raced his #83 Charger Daytona one year at Pikes Peak. I'd like to see a picture of that.

Sorry if this is the wrong thread to ask this, but is it safe to assume if the VIN is XX29L9B****** that the car is a real 5000 or Daytona?

Hello & welcome
yes if the vin Reads XX29 it is a 69 Charger 500 or a Daytona . the first two sequential numbers dictate if its a Charger 500 or a Daytona , all charger 500s were built in 1968 so will have late 68 SPD (scheduled production date) , where as a 69 Daytona will have a 1969 SPD,
just to confuse things a little the very first batch or first few R/T Chargers to be converted to 500s , had a XS29 vin tag or fender tag or both, in which case you need to be looking for an A11 option code on the fender tag . although i believe there is 2 but at least one early Charger 500 with a XS29 vin & no A11 code on the fender tag i think . the aero guys on this site will know all about these cars & will know where or what happened to most of them over the years.

Gotta be careful looking at pre-production press cars! I worked on pre-production press release cars that had certain options tried out, but never mass produced once real production started, for one reason or another.
Sometimes, it's as simple as feedback received from the Press!

yes i read / heard / thought :-\ just the red cars got red shakers ! but only the early assembled cars !
then not sure what date went with argent .... think all cudas were originally destined to have the shaker painted what ever the body color was / is at one stage ....... i'm no expert , just stuff i'm trying to remember reading or hearing i could easliy be getting mixed up with something else or the source of the info was not correct :shruggy: i await to be corrected on any of this

This car is most certainly a R4 car, however I have been told the current owner is having a fender tag made and is listing it as V2 on tag. Car was bought from original owner, and it was missing fender tag when I looked at the car last year.

Some of the early ones were loaded, 355104-355109 around there.

Hi Tan Top, 12 July 2022
Thanks for posting all the photos. Makes us wonder where all those Daytona's, C500's and Super Bird's ended up; please don't tell us the "Crusher."
Have a question: What gear ratio did the Daytona's and Super Bird's run on the high speed tracks? We're pretty sure they used the 8 3/4" third member, just need the gear ratio. We're sure it wasn't a 4.89, thinking along the lines of 2.73 or taller. We want to find the tallest gear set for our 68 Hemi Road Runner which will be running a 572" 800 hp FHO Hemi driving an 8 3/4 rear. We want to go Fast, get Great Mileage and Not burn rubber.
We appreciate your expertise. Thanks in advance.

 no trouble at all posting the pictures , glad you all like looking at them as much as i do ! we are all mopar nutts :yesnod:
the highest over the counter mopar gear ratio for the 8 -3/4 was 2:76 as far as i know , not sure back then if you could get a higher aftermarket gear back in the day or ... but dont quote me on this , i think taller was not available because of the ring gear or the pinion would not fit inside the center section, i might have this round the wrong way or getting confused with something else , i did have tons of tecnical information , pictures , diagrams, lits of vins , saved but lost the lot whan my computer blew up back in 2013.
i dont think any wing car used a 2:76 on the banked nascar track , think it was too tall given the tire height & at what RPM the Hemi could pull at what track with the amount of power back then , think they used a 2.94 , but went with a 3:08 ratio , i use to think they all used a 2:76 or 2.94 for the banked super speedways & was surprised with a 3:08 rear think even a 3:23 was used or tried. as mentioned i could be remembering what ive read wrong or getting confused with something else. the Aero Guys on here :coolgleamA: will probably know more & or the accurate details as to what they ran back then. i await to be corrected
as far as i know chrysler offered a 2:45 ration on a 70 charger not for a 8-3/4 but with a 8-1/4 axle i think. pretty sure there is a aftermarket 3.23 ratio for the Dana 60 now .
with your road runner is it a 4 speed i forget, the quickest easiest option would be try a 2:94 or 2:76 center section ,
might want to think a 5 speed manual trans or a Gear venders on a mopar 833 4 speed , or with a 727 & use a or 3.55 .
its or was a fairly common swap to use a 9 inch ford axle , because of the vast amount of gear ratios if you want to keep the stock type 833 four speed & 727 trans lots of things to consider, i await to be corrected on any of this :popcrn:

Hi Tan Top, 25 July 2022
Just saw your reply to our third member gear question.
Currently, the Six-Pack has the RR's 8 3/4 in it, which has a 4.89. Fine for the Drags but sorry for the street. The RR has the Six-Pack's 9 3/4 Dana with the stock 4.10. We are not going to touch that as we will swap it back where it belongs then figure out what gear we will put in the RR's 8 3/4. It originally had a 3.23, which we still have.
We'd really like to get a gear around 2.76. We have a Ford 2.73 R & P for our police cars. Both came with 3.08. We changed out the 3.08 on our first Stang for a 2.73 and got that beast cruising 85 mph in fifth gear just under 2K rpm. That car was a 5 speed with a new BW tran that had a higher 5th than stock. Took that car on a 3000 mile trip and averaged 27.1 mpg for the whole trip. About 600 of those miles were in town driving at the initial destination (Akron Ohio).
We're not interested in initial acceleration, top end and fuel mileage is what we're aiming for. I'd like to shoot for a top end of 200 + but have my doubts the RR can do it; the front end is too blunt and will be pushing too much air.
The only Mopar we had with a 4-spd was the Hemi Cuda which had a 4.10 9 3/4 Dana. The RR, SB and Daytona have 727 trans. The rear ends in the RR and Daytona were 8 3/4, 3.23 and 3.55 respectively. The SB's third member is a 4.10 9 3/4 Dana.
Plans are to return the SB to original with the few dings acquired in storage over the past 53 years repaired. The engine will be rebuilt with high end racing internals so it can survive on pump gas. All the original internals will go with the car when we sell it.
The RR is getting the new 572 Hemi and it's original 426 Hemi rebuilt. It'll have two complete engine, transmission and K frame assemblies for plug and play swaps. The original Hemi will be spec'd as stock but with high end racing components.
Thanks Tan Top for taking the time to gather the info and post it. Sorry it has taken us so long to acknowledge your help. Please Pardon My Faux Pas!

oh right you have a 727 trans, think the quickest simplist plan would be, use a 29" maybe 30" tire with a 2:94 rear or 2:76 , in a 472 center section or a 489 , the 489 is bit more messing about if your swapping ring & pinion your self because of the crush sleave IMO , although think there is a conversion parts kit for that now to replace the crush sleeve with shims, ive not kept up with the latest developments on what available mainly because i have a 472 ;). the 2:94 & 2:76 ring & pinion gear sets are not available from anywhere on the aftermarket ,(wonder if you could get that ratio custom made) you will have to search for a good used center section & go through it , or find NOS that ratio , there is prolly quite a few still out there , make sure its a ten spline pinion yoke, if you have a 29 spline already change it to a 10 spline , ( even though your not launching is with slicks of the dragstrip IMO why take a chance :Twocents:. same time make sure use new good quality 7290 universal joints , dont think there is any nead for the larger sealed 1350s , besides stock size have grease nipples :yesnod:, doubt you will find a good used 2:94 or :76 with a sure grip, dont think the guys on the high banked tracks used a sure grip , just had a open rear.. Again i await to be corrected :yesnod:). IMO would still have a sure grip with those gears, ( FWIW i have a 2:94 sure grip 472 center section in mine) i would get real good drive shaft made up or the original sent to a specialised shop & have it balanced right to the last .000000 :P. think i would use a tight real good quality torque converter ! stock stall or maybe get a custom made one tell the shop what your trying to/ want to do, let them know rear gear, hp & torque at what rpm, weight of car etc dont think your need to go crazy giving them spects of everything as you not going for 1/4 mile , again i await to be corrected on any of this i'm far from a expert of torque converters. would have the largest custom made radiator that will fit with out cutting anything , unless thats not a biggie, then biggest radiator possible , would still have the trans cooler in the radiator but use a large external cooler to maybe even with its own electric cooling fan , even though your not going to be using a loose converter which does heat up the fluid more. better it be prepared , be safe than sorry as the saying goes IMO

I guess we should be happy that some people care about 50 year old history. But it does not preclude some unsound ideas being floated on You Tube.
With expanded restrictor plate rules and both 426 and 366 Hemi's being in the mix for 1971, the 305 with no plate was a simple experiment to see "if it would work" There was no testing. The first time the engine was in the car was at Daytona. When NASCAR made the 305 rule, I am sure it was with the intention that neither Ford and Chrysler would try it. After the race, NASCAR just told Chrysler (Larry Rathgeb) and Rossi not to bring the car to Ontario. It was, "Hey, you guys didn't get the message the first time. So lets be crystal clear." The reality is that it only would have worked at Daytona and Talladega where you are wound up all the time.
The video alludes that the 305 was an independent effort. However, it was a program with Chrysler's involvement. Rossi of course, provided the car and was amenable to try it. I presume Rossi was willing to try because, A: he had a Daytona, and B: like Cotton Owens, he had been shuffled out of major funding from Chrysler for 1971. So the 305 was a path for the team to try and make Daytona with a little help.
The suggestion that Pete Hamilton got into Brooks intentionally goes against facts. He was the defending 500 winner in his first big race with a new team. He was in contention for the win having won his 125 mile qualifier. He was driving the the only 1971 car the team had. Why would he throw any of that away? There was never any talk from the Chrysler race group guys, the drivers, the car owners that the incident was anything other than a racin' deal. The idea that Cotton Owens would allow his driver to "throw a race" is just dumb. I am sure Cotton was pissed about his car being damaged beyond contention. These guys didn't have stables of ten cars where you can just go wreck someone.
The drafting thing? Wing cars were hard to draft in 1970. The You Tuber has been watching too much freight train modern NASCAR.

Hi Aero426, 27 August 2022
Last evening Dena and I were at our local Dairy Queen having a late night treat when we noticed a NASCAR race on TV. Your comment:
"...too much freight train modern NASCAR." nails it. It was the most boring race we have ever seen and there appeared to be only 10 people in the stands. Wouldn't have wanted to be the
"Ticket Sales Person" for that event.
What a sorry excuse for a NASCAR race. All the cars appeared to be
"Cookie Cutter" cars with a
"Decal" for whatever brand they were supporting. Video from inside the cars looked like they were driving fancy
"Offices" instead of Race cars. It's fine if one likes to watch a kids Choo Choo train go around a track.
Guess that was the last NASCAR race we'll ever watch. . . . unless
"Sanity/Reality" makes a comeback at NASCAR. Obviously, we haven't been watching in the last few years as NASCAR has
"Evolved/Dissolved" in this
"Modern Me-Too Era."Best Always

Hi Folks, 27 August 2022
Dena was looking on the net and found that the race mentioned above was the Wa Wa 250 at Daytona and that it had rained earlier. Maybe that's why the stands were empty and the race was running late in the evening.
Looks like there will be another race there today, the 400 . . . . IF it doesn't rain.
Doubt we will watch the Cho Cho train go around the track. We're going to do something exciting by going shopping at Wally World; is there any place else where one can find huge quantities of high quality items imported from China? Yeah . . . . everywhere else.
Time to saddle up and gallop over to the Walton's China Mart.

"Last evening Dena and I were at our local Dairy Queen having a late night treat when we noticed a NASCAR race on TV. Your comment: "...too much freight train modern NASCAR." nails it. It was the most boring race we have ever seen and there appeared to be only 10 people in the stands. Wouldn't have wanted to be the "Ticket Sales Person" for that event.
What a sorry excuse for a NASCAR race. All the cars appeared to be "Cookie Cutter" cars with a "Decal" for whatever brand they were supporting. Video from inside the cars looked like they were driving fancy "Offices" instead of Race cars. It's fine if one likes to watch a kids Choo Choo train go around a track.
Guess that was the last NASCAR race we'll ever watch. . . . unless "Sanity/Reality" makes a comeback at NASCAR. Obviously, we haven't been watching in the last few years as NASCAR has "Evolved/Dissolved" in this "Modern Me-Too Era."

BINGO, Hemi Chicks. You've nailed it. Boooooring
