Title: Superbird Jacks
Post by: WINGIN IT on July 30, 2011, 03:34:44 PM
What are both Superbird jacks going for these days?
Are they the same as Daytonas?
Is one harder to find than the other?

Is someone reproducing these?

Thanks

So both jacks were the same ?  Meaning 2 of the same jack for each car.

The front scissors jacks were the same except for colors on the daytona its red and superbird jack is black. The rear bumper jacks were the standard bumper jack for 68-70 charger.&70 satellite road runner for the Superbird :Twocents:

OK, maybe this is an obvious newbie question that's been answered before, but if the actual original Daytona/Superbird jacks were actually original Custer Mfg. Co. Jack Model # J30, and were modified by Creative Industries somehow, why can't a supply of the Model # J30 jacks be found and modified just as was done by Creative Industries?

And just where would expect to find a supply of jack's manufactured 40 + years ago  ?  ???

The original jacks are a show correct detail  :Twocents:.I know of many original owners who wouldnt use that jack. They prefered a bottle jack instead .Or have long since sold the car.And still have the jack if they can dig it out

I don't have an original Daytona Jack, and I have never put a dozen Superbird jacks next to a dozen Daytona jacks. That said I have put a couple of Superbird jacks next eachother and both are the same. I also have 2 other jacks that I am pretty sure were manufactured by Custer, and 2 more jacks that are very similar and could be Custer jacks. The Superbird jacks are slightly different than all the others. Everyone talks about the pitch of the screw, the obvious difference. Also different are subtle differences like thickness of the top plate and width of the side bars and slight differences in the pins that go through. Custer seemed to have a press or something that could press the top plate in different thicknesses, maybe for different lifting ratings? The bottom plates I have all seem to be the same, with a little zig here and there on the pressed out metal, leading me to guess that Custer had a standard form that cut the base out of flat stock. The original base plates all have little imperfections in the metal cuts in the same place. Differences in side bar width could have to do with weight rating, or just an odd match going down the assembly line.

The handle seems to be one of a standard handle they used. I have found exact handles matching my Superbird handles, exact. My thought is that they were a standard item they had by the case, certainly way more than the 2500 they needed for the winged cars. They also had a similar handle about .010 thicker in bar width, that used the exact same center piece, but has slightly different lengths of metal rods. This similar handle also has almost a 90 bend where the Superbird jack has about a 45 degree bend, these handles must have been for a slightly different use.

The Superbird hold down plate is a 1 car use item. I've never put a reproduction next to my originals. I believe there are several reproductions of these done over the years. Pictures I've seen show some to be an obvious reproduction. Like anything, when you have an original, it makes it easy to put next to something someone has for sale for comparison.

I know others know a lot more about this than I do.

I think it would be interesting to put 25 Superbird and 25 Daytona jacks next eachother, to see if there were subtle changes along the way, especially given the months difference in car production.

There were definitely at least 2 different bearings used.

Jims car is a early daytona with omitted wing braces .Did it have a jack .Or was it different in the scissors jack development from the rest due to early production :Twocents:

A friend came across of this similar appearing jack and got it for me at a flea market. To see if I think it would be a candidate for a wingcar .
Would require some mods .

I bought a Blackhawk model 67201 scissor jack on ebay and converted it to use in the Daytona clone that I built. It's similar but I had to make a few mods. Its good enough for a clone in my opinion. Seems like I paid $45.00 for the jack and handle.

The green jack and red handle, if one just paints it red or black that is about the amount of effort it should get if it is like similar ones I've seen. Check the the handle. The ones I've seen similar to that have been 1/2" too long on the jack side and too short on the man side. Much better bottom plates can be found, it would be a lot of work to convert the base. Good for a clone. Much too easy to find a closer replacement though.

No insult intended. Just that these things always drag on longer than we think they should. And it is not even a total resto. AB is correct - slower is usually a good thing!

Oh, I understood that the whole time - no offense taken for sure.  That shoe [things always drag on longer than we think] not only fits, it goes with my outfit.   :icon_smile_blackeye:
