I bought my 500 last year from Phoenix and have started the bodywork on it. Some of you guys will remember it as the one with the call outs. There have been posts about it before.
The first shots are as it was when I got it. There was A LOT of bondo in the rear quarters, along with pieces of steel riveted in, and chicken mesh here and there. The floors are in pretty good shape, a few small holes by both front seat foot areas. Frame rails are great!
These are some shots immediately after sandblasting, before primer was applied..........
more bare steel...........
more work around the rear valence........
after the trunk was removed (new AMD one to go in)
Wow...I didn't see that coming! :o
I knew the lower rear quarters and trunk floor needed replacing before I bought the car. There were rust bubbles coming through. The work has turned out a bit more more than I expected, but still worth doing. The seller was awesome and paid for the quarters and trunk extension panels after I got the car. The trunk-floor I got before the car arrived here.
:o dang .... lookes like it was done some time ago , judging by the brazed patch work , floors look real good ! keep the pictures coming , love looking at stuff like this :popcrn:

It was done a loooooong time ago. The last owner didn't have it very long and genuinely didn't know about the repairs. She was originally from New Jersey and was parked up for some time, probably with water in the trunk where it festered away. It's surprising how remarkably good the rest of the car is.
Extent of floor pan problem.........and sills
I was figuring that you would just be driving the car and enjoying it in its "sold" in state for a while before doing anything like this. I figure this is probably the same situation my own 500 is in, which is why I'm afraid to actually tear into it.
I wish I could, but to get a set of plates and legally drive it, it has to pass a strict test which it would have failed on. I'll be ready in a couple of months to pass that test and enjoy cruising. :coolgleamA:
Ah I see. So exactly how strict of a test do they do down there on older cars before tagging them for street use?
Did you ever have any luck in finding a broadcast sheet in the car either? I know that they said they had looked under the rear seat, but not sure if they had looked elsewhere for it.
I think that car looks GREAT with the callouts and the police wheels. :yesnod: :yesnod: The green looks really good with the white stripe. :coolgleamA:
I would put it back the way it was! :drool5: :drool5: :2thumbs:

The test takes a whole day and is insanely strict. Some places strip the carpet and headliner to make sure there's no rust or bad repairs.
I looked everywhere for the buildsheet except behind the head liner. Didn't find one. The car has had the front seats recovered at some point and a new glove box liner installed. A previous owner may have found it. I wish I could track the owners down.

It will stay green with a white stripe, but the call outs will go. I like the cop wheels too. I have a set of 14 inch factory rims that will get powder coated green and used with the dog dish caps. I would love to have a set of repro 14 inch Goodyear F-70's.
Ah - Motor Wheel Spyder wheels in that PolyGlas shot. Those PolyGlas are for 1970 and up. Redlines would be correct if you are after correct.

Redlines with some dog dishes would look great with the green and white stripe. In my opinion that is.

I'm stunned to be seeing these pictures. You bought this car from my brother and we had absolutely no idea the car was that bad. It just seemed like it needed a little touich up behind the wheels and the trunk floor. I'm glad you got the sheet metal from Jack o.k. and you are proceeding with the body work. I'm sure it will look awesome when you are done. Keep up the good work. :2thumbs:

Hey Kiwi,
I love redlines as well, but the white lines/streaks(Not a whitewall) also look great on a green with white stripe car(See Picture). By the way what the heck is wrong with green, there are alot of people that like it and as rare as these cars are I don't think you can fault it. My :Twocents:
Good luck on the resto, I'm sure it will look sweet.

Hey Kiwi, that tire and wheel combo looks pretty sweet. It's too bad that Good Year doesn't make the Wingfoot's or Eagle ST's anymore. They do have the Eagle GT2's but I am not sure if they are as good as the others.

Nice work, my car needs the same and i'm about a year behind you getting started. i hope. :-\
Here are some shots of the rear crossmember tidied up, repairs on the bottom of the wheel housings and the rear valence coming back to life. My mate Steve has been working on the car with the panelbeater and the guys are doing some superb work. :yesnod:
nice work :yesnod: looks great :2thumbs: :popcrn:
Been getting the inner frame rails nice and tidying up some of the small stuff. Rails had surface rust and some very minor pitting. Lots of factory paint in there too, in pretty good nick after 40 years. A couple of before and after shots
Front getting naked.........
And I thought I had it rough when I brought the Daytona in!
I had to have the boot floor replaced, but prior to that the certifier asked who had done the welding; as it was done in CA. in the 70's when the CNG tanks were taken out I didn't really have an answer!!
Glad to see another aero car on the road over here.
John
Thanks John, it would be great to see them parked up together. I haven't put it through certification yet. The certifiers engineer is aware of what is happening and will be there when the new trunk floor is spot welded in. Sign-off should be a breeze.

Cheers Chris. I hope to have her back on the road by the start of summer (it's mid winter over here now).
We sat the quarters on her. They are the Goodmark ones as you know. The steel is so thin, I will get a set of AMD quarters instead and sell the other ones. I think the plug and windscreen will need to come out anyway. It will hold things up a bit, but will be well worth it. I have new AMD valence end caps to go on too.

rear window out, the rear plug is in pretty good condition.......and down to bare metal
someone's been practising their cake icing skills on this car. There was thick bondo around the plug, dutchman panel and joins. Not sure why it was even put there, the steel underneath was solid and straight. The plug will stay in. Top part of original quarters up the sail panel will remain, with new quarters welded in below window line. Plenty of good lead in the quarter/roof join
headlight pods and housings, front bumper irons and cross member, grill support have all been sandblasted and now painted.
sill patch in, drivers fender down to metal. Drivers floor piece and passengers patch welded in
I finished stripping the paint from my passengers fender last week. There was a couple of messy repairs in the top corner but in otherwise good shape.

I do believe starting in '69, the norm on leaf springs was they were painted black. Before that, they were left natural.

Hey Troy,
The passengers side fitted real well, the drivers was a bit tighter and needed a bit more massaging but nothing too drastic. I had a set of Goodmark ones I was going to put on the car. Sitting them side by side, there's just no comparison.

Was down at a mates wkshop havin a few cold ones last night as the wkshops owner had just become a Dad, the ol 68 was parked to a mates 59 Caddy, he also has a 58 Fury with dual quads.
And then we were discussing the styling cues on the 500 , oh yeah :coolgleamA:
Some new photos. A huge amount of work has gone in to get her to this stage. Lucky to have old school panelbeating done here, all welding, hammering ,filing, shrinking....no body filler here.
The quarters are finally on. We will do spot welds around the outsides next and do the roof join and around the plug with lead like it was done at Creative Industries. Pretty happy with how it's turning out.

Ok fellas, here's some progress..........
here's some fresh photos from last weekend. Engine bay stripped to bare steel. This was done over 2 days, one side at a time. Each half sealed with a rust neutraliser/epoxy at the end of the day, so the whole thing isn't shown stripped, just 1 side at a time. Also some pics of the quarters spot welded in, and the windscreen channel repair. All steel fabrication/welding. No body filler.
Frame rails haven't been cleaned up yet.

'68 they were natural, starting in '69, they painted the completely assembled unit black, FYI... Either way, it'll be nice.....
I'm really digging your pictures !!!!! Awesome work... Also, excuse me if I'm forward, but you know the seam of the corner cap and the rear valance wasn't sealed, only the corner cap and the quarter was.........
Starting in 69 from Jan 1 or the 69 model year? My build date is Nov 68, so I thought they were natural. No sign of any black on there either.
Thanks for the tip on the sealer... appreciate any comments on stuff like that :2thumbs:

Not sure about the start date of it.. I was under the impression it was just a model year thing... but, if there's no evidence of black paint, then maybe there wasn't any............

Make sure the rear valance-to-end cap seam isn't filled in with body sealer like the end cap-to-quarter seam is....
How much longer for paint? You going to do the primer with overspray on the bottom or paint body color the complete car?

We were going to hit the underside with green then clear, but were supplied the wrong hardener for the clear. By the time we noticed, it was saturday morn and the shop closed till Monday :icon_smile_blackeye:
I'm painting the body color to the whole car - not worrying about those details with primer overspray etc. The underside, interior, trunk, engine bay will all have green over the next few weeks then will get the underside all complete. after that will get it off the rotisserie and get it rolling before painting the outside.
I'm back living in N.Z. now, but still a 5 hour drive to get to the 500.
What is the reason to have the valence-to-endcap free of sealer?
Just went thru the whole thread.
X 100.... on the great job. :2thumbs:
A BIG THANKS.....for posting good pics and explanations. From this and other threads, I'm learning a lot of how a unibody went together. And that's the best way to understand how to repair them.

Well, if you want an OEM look and one in which there's no "indication" of bodywork, then they shouldn't be filled. It wasn't originally to begin with. It is free detailing to boot. If you want to chat about it, PM and I can call you... Attached is a picture of my former '68 Charger R/T in that area......
Great Job on the car C500!! I've seen the thread over the last couple years but I just re-read everything from the beginning. I was going to ask about the Valiant Charger in the background but then I noticed you are in NZ. Makes sense now. I can't wait to see some green on it. I know you're anxious too!

What is the reason to have the valence-to-endcap free of sealer?
Well, if you want an OEM look and one in which there's no "indication" of bodywork, then they shouldn't be filled. It wasn't originally to begin with. It is free detailing to boot. If you want to chat about it, PM and I can call you... Attached is a picture of my former '68 Charger R/T in that area......
Ahh, yes I'm with you now - thought you meant the inside of the cap/valence. The outside areas as you show in your pic will definitely show the seam with
no sealer there. The seams I have look real nice too, and shown on one of my earlier posts. Seeing the two seams each side of the end cap is a definite for me, and something I notice on other cars when filled :o
One step forward and two steps back.....
A while back I had the engine bay stripped to bare metal.... it came up nice nice. I used a top quality rust neutraliser/epoxy that can be used on rust or bare steel. Brunox is a German product and highly regarded. Unfortunately the steel was too clean and shiny and the Brunox did not hold too well on it. After priming over, a few weeks later working on an area of it, a piece flaked off. Not impressed.
Last week, I called in a professional sandblaster to get it all off. The guy has worked on classic cars, was very careful and meticulous and did a very nice job. The weather forecast was for rain, but we were lucky to strike excellent weather all day. I had the engine bay, both sides of the inner guards, radiator support and the inside of the hood and trunk lid done.
We put a layer of epoxy (not Brunox this time) on it after blasting, followed by high-build primer the following day. After a light guide-coat (red) my wife and I spent the whole day sanding the engine bay smooth and followed it up with a coat of primer. We'll leave it a few weeks to cure, and give it some more primer then some F8.

1. suggestion............ When you go to paint the engine bay, sort of close the engine wiring harness straps attached to the firewall to the point where you can slip the harness in. If not, when you go to close the strap around the harness, the paint will crack. If it is in it's final resting place, then the paint shouldn't crack..........

No major progress to report, except for having the engine back in the same garage as the body. A 6 hour haul across some mountainous passes :eek2:
Will freshen it up in the next couple of weeks. Tranny has already been fully rebuilt.

Not sure on the cost, just didn't want sand getting in places. A bit of moisture or humidity on sand, and you've got rust forming against the steel. :2thumbs: Not many of the blasting guys use sand as a media anymore
Wonderful work C500!
Shell must be made very close to mine C500.
December 19th 1968, probably a Friday LoL!!!
Enlarged spot-welds on L/H fendershock tower) near where the battery sits.
The Spot welding dude missed the support bracket and divoted the inner fenders.
F8 green too, what topcoat are you using?
No one can mix-it here in the UK for air dry DIY any more!
Was thinking of going Chrysler Moss green to be different???
You are doing exactly what I was gonna do, all-in resto.
Change of circumstances so just gonna drive her instead.
Good luck on the resto. :popcrn:

Hey mate, Howick Hire under Eastside Tattoo has a mobile engine lifter that I've used a few times, maybe pop up for a look to size it up if you are getting close to putting it in the hole, presume you are going in from the top?
Hmm, Sooo, any progress on Ol Greenie mate?
Maybe I should pop over sometime in the Big Black Dodge with some stogies, cold ones and tall tales from abroad so the young fella can hear what a 440 sounds like :icon_smile_big:

Now you're talking my lingo! Yes, engine progress indeed ;D ... body - nada :rotz: .
Just for you Bob... from my thread in the Engine section..........
Bores and pistons have now been measured up. Max gap between pistons and their respective bores was 7 thou. Factory manual allows for up to 13 thou.
Bore 'round' was less. Taper through bores was minimal (can't remember the measurement right now). All pistons were less than 1 thou for 'round' and also for taper along piston. Original pistons will be going back in the holes. Block will be going in for hot dipping next. Crank machining, and some new rings, bearings, springs, cam.... Looking at going with the comp cams 268 cam.

Hi C500.
My 68 R/T had 8 thou of wear in the bores and she ran real sweet!
Not sure how you could run with 15 thousanths of clearance though?
My drag-mate runs that on his ali-block hemi, but only for a few minutes lol...
Keep up the good work!

Not convinced hot dipping (acid) is good for a block though. Any alternative recommendations ?
Engine is nearly done. Short block is assembled, head work done, see here for pics http://www.dodgecharger.com/forum/index.php/topic,126299.0.html
Body is going in for paint prep mid November. :paintingpink:
Time for an update... the 500 was sent to the body shop a couple of weeks back, body has been stripped back to bare metal, all the edp coating taken off the quarters, and all steel acid washed. Tail panel and door jams sand blasted. Has been shot in epoxy primer since, pics of that on the way later
.
Looking good, love me them 500s
Great job!

Thanks guys, car is close to paint, went to see it today.
A couple of pictures from today. The doors and trunk lid have been acid dipped. Spot welds on the trunk lid were unpicked, and opened up before dipping, same with the bottom of the doors where a little rust was forming. My body guy has been doing some sharp work. Front guards are coming from AMD, along with a new hood.

As a fellow F8 C500 owner and oilpan officionado, I think from the pics thats a 70 pan... :shruggy:

Thanks for the advice.... yes, it is a new oil pan, a Hemi style 6 Quart from 440 source, and listed to fit an 440 RB engine. If it doesn't fit, I'll be pretty pissed. Had it a couple of years. The old 402 pan was pretty banged up. :2thumbs:
Listing here: http://store.440source.com/1970-71-Hemi-E-Body-6-Quart-Oil-Pan-Plain-Steel/productinfo/200-1123/
Hi C500,
Sorry to 'rain on your parade' Old Timer!
NOT my intention at ALL!!!
Oilpan clearances have been a 'bug-bear' of mine 'for years' with Mopars.
Even pans that are supposed to fit actually don't, sometimes.
I agree the 402 is a bit small for a 440ci Hipo engine, but the 69 hemi pan is probably worse lol.
I think the 70-71 pan is easily the best of the range and never thought it could be fitted to an earlier car 'without mods'...
But knowing Brandon at 440 source, if he says it will fit, then it will... :2thumbs:
He must have had it slightly re-designed before manufacture, so its a NO-brainer for all 440 hipo engines!!!
I assume its not an exact copy of the SIX-QUART factory pan, but something very similar?
Carry on the GOOD work Old Timer antipodean! :notworthy:
Wow, this is the 1st time seeing this one going on.
i LOVE F8 green , and would look killer with white interior, white stripe and whiteline tires. IMO the red lines would get lost in all that dark green
With all the paint work done and engine done, its all down hill from here . This is where the fun really starts,,,,for it is anyway .

He must have had it slightly re-designed before manufacture, so its a NO-brainer for all 440 hipo engines!!!
I assume its not an exact copy of the SIX-QUART factory pan, but something very similar?
Carry on the GOOD work Old Timer antipodean! :notworthy:
Not a problem - glad you mentioned something :2thumbs: I'm placing my trust in 440 source that it fits :coolgleamA:  Your 500 in F8 looks a beauty :scope:

Wow, this is the 1st time seeing this one going on.
i LOVE F8 green , and would look killer with white interior, white stripe and whiteline tires. IMO the red lines would get lost in all that dark green
With all the paint work done and engine done, its all down hill from here . This is where the fun really starts,,,,for it is anyway .
:2thumbs: Yip, white interior eventually, white stripe. I have some Magnums with whitelines, and some steel factory style wheels too, with a couple of hubcap options. Redlines will go on those eventually.

Hey guys... managed to get some paint onto the original block.
Looks good... You going to paint the spark plug wire brackets separately then install? what about your spark plug wire heat shields attached to the head bolts?
Hey Troy - how many heat shields should there be? One?
should be a bat wing style shield on passengers side , and a smaller cup shaped shield drivers side
Drivers side is held under on the nuts that holds the exhaust manifold on
Pass side is held under 2 head bolts

I reckon you should get some green suede shoes to go with a white suit - that would look sharp ;)

I was surprised to see the dash and column being painted green. So the interior is going to be green and white?

Dash and column are originally green from the factory, redone the same again, except for the seats, upper door panels and door cards changed over to white. I know a green car with white interior has black dash and console (factory combo) but keeping those green....changing to black seat belts...
Interesting.... is it that way so that you can change it back to green if so desired without redoing the dash? What are the plans for headliner and carpet color?

Headliner is a new green one, same with carpet, all new interior from Legendary. Yeah, easy change back to original Green all round. Much prefer the white, not fussed in the black dash/console/carpet.
Got the dash in today. Fully restored. Cluster done a while back with new decals, new Quartz clock, frame media blasted and painted the correct 'suede' finish, all new wiring...new dash speaker hooked up to the working AM thumb wheel radio, new Sony stereo hidden in glove compartment, connected to dash and parcel tray speakers. Short 'whip' aerial tucked in behind the dash, all looks original at first glance 😎
Outstanding.......... Well done......... I'm sure that was a sense of accomplishment........ :2thumbs:

A couple more for the day..., window trim and hood latches in place

I put the seat belts back in yesterday, cleaned the outside and went for a spin. Need to put the stripe back on, rear quarter glass, and a few small things. Some pics to enjoy...
Been chipping away at getting this one done. Fitted both quarter windows, door and panels gapped, new brake booster, window/door rubbers in, fitted new 500 trunk stripe, parcel tray

Good question, I didn't hang around it long enough to hear comments or talk with people. Generally people haven't any idea what a 500 is

There was a nice plum crazy 70 RT and a black 69 318 car.
New Legendary interior ready to go in. Seat covers and seat foams too.
That was not cheap :(

Hi Duncan, 07 December 2022
Your 500 is looking beautiful. You can be very proud of what you have accomplished. The Dodge Chargers of your era are the most beautiful cars ever to hit the world's highways.
Hope your Police car gets to its new home soon. Been a long time waiting in California.
As soon as my rehab is finished I'll make it a point to take some photos of our 00003.1 mile Mustang Police Car. It's sitting in Dena's Shop along with our 68 Hemi RR and 69 440-6 SB. Hope the rehab goes quickly as we want to get the cars back together. The Stang will be the easiest but will require more mobility and flexibility that should come back during and after rehab.
Wishing You, Your Family, Friends and Pets a Very Blessed Christmas and New Year.
Take Care Duncan

There's nothing cheap anymore.
Or was there ever a time it was?
It's all relative I suppose...
A really nice car!
Got the door panels and upper door pads on. Seats, carpet etc in the new year. Legendary stuff is top quality.

Thanks, its been a long road, but worth the wait, as it's a super solid car, with no gremlins lurking. Yes, the Monaco is taking it's time, has been literally months! Can't wait to see pics of your Mustang, sounds amazing. I hope the rehab goes well, and you're up and about before long.
Have a great Xmas and new year :2thumbs:

Hi Duncan, 08 February 2023
They are looking great. Will have to remember this for when we start on our RR, it's most likely going to need a new interior. Sitting around in storage 55 years didn't do it any good. I'm sure it is stiff and ready to crack the first time anyone sits in it. We know it is dirty.
Good to see you're close to finishing it.

Thanks, real happy with the quality and how well they came out. Needed to add more foam to the buckets though, even bought the new bucket foams from them. Have new white headrests and hinge covers to go on too.
Coming together nicely! Pulling them out again soon, have new seatbelts and new carpet to go in next.
Looks nice :2thumbs: Leon.

That is one beautiful Charger 500. You can be right Proud.

Thanks Hemi Chicks! Would love to bring it over, but the cost of international travel and shipping it over makes it rather costly! We'll just have to come and check everyone elses neat cars out...hope all is well over there! We've just dodged Cyclone Gabrielle here!
Looks great. F8 over white is the original color combo of my 500, which is currently black.
Inspiration for someday!

Mike - stunning factory combo. I'll get some better pics once I get the steel wheels done in green, redlines and dog dish caps on. Have some 69 Magnums with the trim rings, a set of Polara / Monaco wheel covers too... plenty of options for a different kind of look. The Wingfoot's and black black steelies on there get alot of comments too.

Yes, the new interior is from Legendary, except the head rests as Legendary don't make them. The inner cat whiskers are from them too, rear upper pads came with them already fitted. The outers ones I have are rubbish, need to buy them from Legendary also. It's a pity they didn't supply the whole set with the pads.
