Already changed trunk deck and have a decent bumper...needs drivers side floor pan replaced and quarter panel work...also worried the rear frame has some serious rust.

Looking forward to the build, do you have the R/T doors? Looks like you have the '72 Rallye's on there.

welcome aboard

looks like a good starting point  , so the questions are what colour is it going to be  and what interior is going in it .

is it going back to the fender tag or are you building it the way you would have ordered it

Its going to be Burnt Yellow and Black....not sure about the interior yet but I like the doors and the engine color. I never liked the orange.

I would recommend that you strip the car down and send the shell to a dip and strip. It will give you a full indication of how much metal repair will be required and if at that point if its worth it :scratchchin: Which it looks like it is! When I rebuilt my car I didn't do that and I spent way too many hours stripping the car till I could even think about patching it. Then when you get it back you will get to be good friends with a AMD dealer :icon_smile_big:

Have fun and keep at it.

Hey friend go to Canadian Tire or what ever and get a decent 220V mig welder, if I can learn how ANY body can :yesnod: Plus after a couple of welding repairs the welder will pay for its self in money saved by not paying for a welder to do the work. I myself bought a 120V welder years ago trying to save some $$ but for just a bit more or even the same when they go on sale you should get the 220V its much easier to weld with. Lots of how too's on Youtube and endless great advice here too. Just start on places that are not structural or visible till ya get the run of it :Twocents:

Have fun!

sounds like this is going to be one large expensive build  :scratchchin:

7#1, yep you can learn to weld and do bodywork. Now, to be honest I cannot Mig weld as of now. I have all wises had body men that work for me that did, so why learn.  :shruggy: But, I have watched them for years so I know I could learn how. I have all so seen a few people post here at the site learn and do there own cars!  :2thumbs:

Far as the body work part, that is easy once you have a idea of what you are trying to do! Heck, even I can do it!  :D

Besides saving you a ton of $, there is the pride you will have when you tell people you did all the work!  :coolgleamA:

with all the rust in the frame and firewall etc...its just not my bag....but I did notice all the other 71's I saw this weekend had the same plague in the same spots mine
had...must have been a bad year for metal or something !

71 Hide a ways have smaller rectangular squares than the 72 Hide a ways.  it's not a huge difference, but you can't mix and match them. :Twocents:
But, like it was said. 72 Rallyes did have hide a way headlights.  You just had to order them/check the box when ordering it. Two of my 72 Rallyes came with them.  :Twocents:

71's were the only year where the ,(lets call them horizontal strips) were high lighted. There were no vertical strips. 72`s started with the vertical bars also.

It is Argon capable. I bought the gauge I needed for it but havent been able to afford the Tank yet...

MY OPINION..  (Not worth much but)...  I concur with the others... good buy on the 220v welder!   :2thumbs:  I tried the 'non argon' 120v and wasted a lot of time :brickwall:

Also, in my limited experience, welding with the Argon is much easier than without.  The weld 'pools' and 'gets into' the metal and 'binds' the pieces together.  Save yourself a lot of headaches with having to grind off 'splatter' and frustration with 'breaking welds' and 'burning holes' and such by waiting till you have the Argon tank before you weld the inner fender on your car.

GOD Bless!

Thanks!72Charger-SE i accept all opinions and help as new as I am to this....
I should have the argon soon and since I have never welded before I figured starting without it and just practice
I have learned already how to see the weld pools ...stay in front, keep the correct angle...figured once I got a little better at that I could waste some gas too  :2thumbs:
It will be awhile before I attempt the panels...I also have floor pans to replace which will be much harder...tried finding some local welding talent that could
help out but havent found any experienced takers just yet LOL

It's the opposite. '72 has more vertical lines therefore smaller "squares". '71 only has 3 vertical lines in the grill and they don't sit flush w/the horizontal lines. None in the doors. Horizontal lines are chromed as stated. Not sure if the '72 ones are. As stated OP has the '72 setup.
Compare to my '71.

AS all good projects go I have been side lined for a while but Im getting back to it. I did get the inner fender panels removed and the engine compartment primed...
but I am on hold for the sand blasting and body repair and welding required to move forward. So I am now thinking I might as well replace the old 72 Rallye suspension with some modern upgrades? I was going to put my 73 suspension on this but figure its tore down now is the time to do it......Any recommendations? As we all know the steering and front end on these could use some improvement.

What do what you want to achieve - Are looking to go with an improved stock style suspension or looking at aftermarket components mild to wild? If you are looking for something that is more than a heavy duty upgrade to the stock style suspension, others will be better able to provide experienced feedback. You might even want to pose the question in the Suspension section for a targeted response.

Thanks RallyeMike
Definitely want to improve on the Stock style but leaning towards med after market type components. Interested in what others have done.
I also posted in suspension section.

I still wish I could dip it but the only two places I have heard of in the Stl area never answer their phones and I have a media blast guy right in town. He also said he could spray with the raptor underbody coating when done. Ahhhh Progress feels good again!

He puts some kind of phosphate ?  :shruggy:

Stuff on it.

I had mine in my climate controlled garage with no primer on it for years...no problems unless somebody put their sweaty hands on it.

Do you have a garage ?

If you don't have a garage...

Give up now. :Twocents:

Thanks for the hookup Daytona R/T SE
Just got off the phone with Dale, Dipping scheduled for end of March!
and what a price 700 for body and 40 per door fender and hood....900.00 total with phosphate coating.
If I had found him a yr and half ago I would have already had this done!
Thanks again!

Just got it back but I am kind of overwhelmed as to where to start? My rotisserie isnt done yet. The car is on the trailer in my garage. Phosphate coating isnt quite covering everything as there is some minor surface rust starting. Should I immediately get some primer on it or should I start metal replacement? :scratchchin: It needs new floor pans and some work on the areas around the rear seat belts mounts. Looks like rear quarters will get replaced too but all in all its in reall ygood shape.

I've owned over 50 Mopars and several different years of Chargers from 68 -74. The 72 Rallye is still my ultimate favourite. The doors are, by far, the coolest doors to ever come out of Detroit, period. The ONLY thing Chrysler messed up on was not putting a hood insert on the 72 cars!

Keep going on it...

Finally found some time to get to the floor pans. And I know the Media Blast vs Acid Dip debit has been done many times but I had this acid dipped last yr and after removing the floor pans and seeing all the crap left behind from the Acid Dip I think its really a toss up. Still plenty of rust and work even after the acid dip but media blasting would have never got this either...One clean spot on the passenger side cross member.

Panel seam removal Came out pretty nice! Now I'm still a little taken back by the firewall to toe board seam.
I've posted in another thread but any suggestions are appreciated. I don't want to damage the firewall.

No but I had the car acid dipped 2yrs ago and then epo primed. There was rust along the seem between the firewall and the floor pan. Both drivers and passenger side. If you look closely you can see a patch I have cut out on the passenger side. And some of the spot welds are only accessible from the engine side.
