Starting New Build 72 Charger Rallye
Looks pretty decent
:popcrn: :popcrn: :popcrn:
Already changed trunk deck and have a decent bumper...needs drivers side floor pan replaced and quarter panel work...also worried the rear frame has some serious rust.
She'll be an awesome ride when it's done... What are your plans for the car?
I have had this building for 30 yrs! First I totaled :( Second one was almost mint and an uninsured driver caved the frame...She will just be a sunny day driver!
My daughter thinks she gets it...LOL :smilielol:
Motor is 440 30 over...just finished cleaning it up
Looking forward to the build, do you have the R/T doors? Looks like you have the '72 Rallye's on there.
No the 72 Rallye Doors but I like them better and there in great shape....no work needed
heres the rust problem
1st and second are drivers side rear frame
3rd is passenger side rear frame
4th is splash pan on drivers side...not too bad...there also one under the rear seat I didn't notice
:coolgleamA: :2thumbs: :popcrn: love the slots :yesnod:
thanks I always like them TOO! but need to find some center caps!
Hello and welcome aboard
Very nice choice for a build
I may have what you need to help you get started.
PM sent.
welcome aboard
looks like a good starting point , so the questions are what colour is it going to be and what interior is going in it .
is it going back to the fender tag or are you building it the way you would have ordered it
I would find the correct doors. :Twocents:
Looks like an SE to me. Not that there's anything wrong with that.
How can you tell it was se ? I know the engine is the wrong color. :Twocents:
Ah see thats the beauty. There are absolutely no numubers matching its a hotch podge of three different 71-73's that I owed at one time...
Its going to be Burnt Yellow and Black....not sure about the interior yet but I like the doors and the engine color. I never liked the orange.
nice starting point. pm sent.
If you need parts Clay & sons in Catawissa is a good source and good guy(of course I cant find his # now that I need it)
Thanks found him on the Googles!
New Pics pulled seats and carpet and console....rear quarters and seat belt area is toasted much worse than I expected....driver side and passenger side kick panels need replacing...found a local guy at cost of 95.00/hr to do some welding...wish I knew how :rotz:
I would recommend that you strip the car down and send the shell to a dip and strip. It will give you a full indication of how much metal repair will be required and if at that point if its worth it :scratchchin: Which it looks like it is! When I rebuilt my car I didn't do that and I spent way too many hours stripping the car till I could even think about patching it. Then when you get it back you will get to be good friends with a AMD dealer :icon_smile_big:
Have fun and keep at it.
Scott
just found more frame rust and hood mount brackets rusted out ...fire wall rusted out ..I let it sit way too long!
pulled fenders and front bumper, splash pan tonight will post photos later
Firewall issues, is out of my comfort zone. Good luck.
yeah :brickwall: and I don't know how to do metal work...
I am sure you can find someone in your area to help you. :2thumbs:
Did a little asking on here didn't get any takers...I just bought the frame and shell of A 72 picking it up Wed...alleviates a lot of the rust problem and its tore almost all the way down

Hey friend go to Canadian Tire or what ever and get a decent 220V mig welder, if I can learn how ANY body can :yesnod: Plus after a couple of welding repairs the welder will pay for its self in money saved by not paying for a welder to do the work. I myself bought a 120V welder years ago trying to save some $$ but for just a bit more or even the same when they go on sale you should get the 220V its much easier to weld with. Lots of how too's on Youtube and endless great advice here too. Just start on places that are not structural or visible till ya get the run of it :Twocents:
Have fun!
Scott
Good Luck....... Hopefully you can enjoy it sooner than later......... :2thumbs:
if you've got firewall rust you can bet you have rust in the inside cowl and doorpost area's where the hinges bolt on :yesnod:
sounds like this is going to be one large expensive build :scratchchin:
7#1, yep you can learn to weld and do bodywork. Now, to be honest I cannot Mig weld as of now. I have all wises had body men that work for me that did, so why learn. :shruggy: But, I have watched them for years so I know I could learn how. I have all so seen a few people post here at the site learn and do there own cars! :2thumbs:
Far as the body work part, that is easy once you have a idea of what you are trying to do! Heck, even I can do it! :D
Besides saving you a ton of $, there is the pride you will have when you tell people you did all the work! :coolgleamA:
Cuda Ken
Well pulled a 180...went and found a shell and frame of a 72 over the weekend...800.00 picking it up Wed...will post new photos when I get it....
with all the rust in the frame and firewall etc...its just not my bag....but I did notice all the other 71's I saw this weekend had the same plague in the same spots mine
had...must have been a bad year for metal or something !
Well, there you go. ! Build a 72 Rallye clone.
Heres the new frame and body...I stripped down everything except suspension this weekend
So it's going to be a 72 "Rallye" ?
They had some 71's there but they are were chewed up to no end...I mean when the inside of the frame bubbles outside its not a good thing! :o

Yes but with the hide away front lights....I have the louvered taillights
and I saw someones on here that was lime green and black...Im either doing that or my original colors
burnt yellow and black...but that lime green I am liking!

This one doesn't
I didnt know 72's had the hideaways all the photos I see the didnt....good to know though! Thanks!
It was optional.
Also 71 hideaway head lights are different than the rest of the 3rd Gen. hideaways, if it matters to ya?
Scott
Hmm not sure which ones I have then I will post a pic
actually there is a pic at the top of the thread..which year are mine?
How do you tell the difference in them?
71 Hide a ways have smaller rectangular squares than the 72 Hide a ways. it's not a huge difference, but you can't mix and match them. :Twocents:
But, like it was said. 72 Rallyes did have hide a way headlights. You just had to order them/check the box when ordering it. Two of my 72 Rallyes came with them. :Twocents:
71's were the only year where the ,(lets call them horizontal strips) were high lighted. There were no vertical strips. 72`s started with the vertical bars also.
Scott
That's good looks likeI have the 72's anyway so Im building a 72 Ralleye now :coolgleamA:
So, it's time to re name this thread. :Twocents:

"All the rest" besides 71 is just 72. There is just 71 style or 72 style - Not available in 73 or 74 :'( . From the photos, it appears you have 72 style, so lucky you !
Yup, those are 72 hideaways. BTW, it's "Rallye" ;) I think that's part of what Acudanut is getting at.
Ah Rallye Got IT! 71 RT was easier :hah:
I noticed the missouri tags , i live in springfield didnt know if we are neighbors
Im in Wentzville...but have alot of 73 parts if your looking...control arms in brand new shape with ball joints..rear window lovers....a couple doors...SE hood ornament
7#1ChargerRT#, we are not far from each other, I live in Maryville IL.
Cuda Ken
steering column(shaft) seems to be from a 74
yeah that's a junker they put in so I could stear it off the trailer...I have to give it back...I have my column from my 71
Started inner fender replacement this weekend!.
Always great to have progress! It will be shiny and new shortly - rust all gone. Oh what a feeling! :2thumbs:
Yes! I had been looking at those panels for weeks with the news ones in my garage....finally feels like some forward progress getting the old ones off!

Thanks I already got one from Craigs list a few weeks back and have been you tubing and practicing on old scrap metal around the garage! Not bad welds are getting better...
It is Argon capable. I bought the gauge I needed for it but havent been able to afford the Tank yet...

MY OPINION.. (Not worth much but)... I concur with the others... good buy on the 220v welder! :2thumbs: I tried the 'non argon' 120v and wasted a lot of time :brickwall:
Also, in my limited experience, welding with the Argon is much easier than without. The weld 'pools' and 'gets into' the metal and 'binds' the pieces together. Save yourself a lot of headaches with having to grind off 'splatter' and frustration with 'breaking welds' and 'burning holes' and such by waiting till you have the Argon tank before you weld the inner fender on your car.
GOD Bless!
Thanks!72Charger-SE i accept all opinions and help as new as I am to this....
I should have the argon soon and since I have never welded before I figured starting without it and just practice
I have learned already how to see the weld pools ...stay in front, keep the correct angle...figured once I got a little better at that I could waste some gas too :2thumbs:
It will be awhile before I attempt the panels...I also have floor pans to replace which will be much harder...tried finding some local welding talent that could
help out but havent found any experienced takers just yet LOL

It's the opposite. '72 has more vertical lines therefore smaller "squares". '71 only has 3 vertical lines in the grill and they don't sit flush w/the horizontal lines. None in the doors. Horizontal lines are chromed as stated. Not sure if the '72 ones are. As stated OP has the '72 setup.
Compare to my '71.
Any Updates from the OP? It's been a LONG TIME! By now the car is probably done and 'Burning Rubber'....
Hope he is still working on it. FUN POST
AS all good projects go I have been side lined for a while but Im getting back to it. I did get the inner fender panels removed and the engine compartment primed...
but I am on hold for the sand blasting and body repair and welding required to move forward. So I am now thinking I might as well replace the old 72 Rallye suspension with some modern upgrades? I was going to put my 73 suspension on this but figure its tore down now is the time to do it......Any recommendations? As we all know the steering and front end on these could use some improvement.
The 73 suspension is very different from 72 and earlier.
Thanks RallyeMike I wasnt sure if the 73 would work but even so upgrading would be better. Any recommendations?
What do what you want to achieve - Are looking to go with an improved stock style suspension or looking at aftermarket components mild to wild? If you are looking for something that is more than a heavy duty upgrade to the stock style suspension, others will be better able to provide experienced feedback. You might even want to pose the question in the Suspension section for a targeted response.
Thanks RallyeMike
Definitely want to improve on the Stock style but leaning towards med after market type components. Interested in what others have done.
I also posted in suspension section.
After doing some reading up here http://www.cuda-challenger.com/cc/index.php?topic=95660.0
Im thinking a stock upgrade and new Borgeson stearing box might do the trick. Bermanautocraft.com has some pretty good prices. Anyone use there parts yets?
IMO, 71-72, Steering is just fine as is. Save your money for other upgrades,
After a year delay finally removed the front and rear windshields, side vent windows, and doors....ready for media blasting! I still wish I could dip it but the only two places I have heard of in the Stl area never answer their phones and I have a media blast guy right in town. He also said he could spray with the raptor underbody coating when done. Ahhhh Progress feels good again!

Just got off the phone with Dale, Dipping scheduled for end of March!
and what a price 700 for body and 40 per door fender and hood....900.00 total with phosphate coating.
If I had found him a yr and half ago I would have already had this done!
Thanks again!

Just got it back but I am kind of overwhelmed as to where to start? My rotisserie isnt done yet. The car is on the trailer in my garage. Phosphate coating isnt quite covering everything as there is some minor surface rust starting. Should I immediately get some primer on it or should I start metal replacement? :scratchchin: It needs new floor pans and some work on the areas around the rear seat belts mounts. Looks like rear quarters will get replaced too but all in all its in reall ygood shape.

Agreed Nakita7 this car was never a numbers matching so I am not a purest but Love the 72 doors!
Finally found some time to get to the floor pans. And I know the Media Blast vs Acid Dip debit has been done many times but I had this acid dipped last yr and after removing the floor pans and seeing all the crap left behind from the Acid Dip I think its really a toss up. Still plenty of rust and work even after the acid dip but media blasting would have never got this either...One clean spot on the passenger side cross member.

And it was a crazy overpriced 26,000 71 non number matching no where near completed and on a trailer. :smilielol:
What If I know where a 72 Rallye is with a 383 Auto, completely done in Hemi Orange (original Color) (Black Interior) for 30K..Any Interest ?
Ah I wish Acudanut! 30k is something I dont have....but at least its a complete vehicle compared to a roller for 26,000 lol
A Roller for 26k ?
Yeah wished I had taken a photo of it. Guy was delusional! :eek2:
Finally finished floor pan removal from firewall. Still needs some minor work but test fitted the new floor pan and its a very very nice fit!
This was a Golden Star full pan.
Nice, I'm about to do the same thing. Do you have rust at the bottom of the windshield?

No but I had the car acid dipped 2yrs ago and then epo primed. There was rust along the seem between the firewall and the floor pan. Both drivers and passenger side. If you look closely you can see a patch I have cut out on the passenger side. And some of the spot welds are only accessible from the engine side.
