Title: Original Superbird trunk lids
Post by: mopar4ya on June 30, 2020, 07:14:44 PM
I am on the hunt for a replacement trunk lid for my bird, #168755. My car was missing it's original lid back when i bought it in the early 80's. I am hoping some you guys with original lids could look and see if they their lids have the provision for the go wing brackets or not, and if you would post the vin of the car. Trying to see a pattern of when the lids changed over from a standard lid.

Thanks!

4 door sedans get the same lid with cutouts
or was it strictly a time thing??

Wondering how many guys will be running out to see
if they have cutouts on their Bird, or not!   :shruggy:

yes, it's a timing thing - one decklid needed on the assembly line for any Plymouth B-body

Yes, Greg, I did.  :yesnod: My trunk is the same as the previous pictures. I can't attach mine cuz my file is too large. I can't figure out how to compress my phone pictures.

They're for the optional go-wing on a Road Runner/GTX

This is what a i need to see. I always thought there were no cut outs on the lids. Anyone with a early car here ?. Based on what has been posted so far, I assume I need to find a lid with the cutouts.

   Thanks!

170184 - mine has the cut-outs. (I re-read your post and see you requested VINs.)

169441, recently posted on this site as "for sale", likewise, HAS the cut-outs. 165370 (eBay) does NOT appear to have the cut-outs, assuming these are original. ????

I just looked at three original Superbird lids - two had no cut outs, the one on my car does.  To the best of my knowledge none have been replaced.

Bought the car in 1986...at that time it had 73,000 miles and been repainted around 1977. I have no reason to believe the trunk lid was ever changed. But because of it being painted, the jack decals were gone. I talked to the original owner numerous times, and the only mention of repair was the driver's door, because someone backed into it at the dealership.

Interesting! Starting to think there is no right or wrong. Maybe I'm over thinking this and I just need to find a lid and go with it.

Thanks !

The Go Wing spoilers and associated deck lids hit in Dec. 1969 (1970 model year) but the earlier version would have still been in use as needed for cars that did not have the Go Wing at times.

Same deal with the E-bodies, some with no spoiler still had the earlier version deck lid in use for months.

Well, all this is really self inflicted, I think. It's funny how now we look at date codes and back in the day, we would pass on a car because it cost $200 too much. I don't have the vin number handy to my bird but it has the original deck lid and it's got the holes for the go wing.
