A dream come true.  :2thumbs:

I wish I had a Superbird sitting in my bodyshop.  ;D

Last night I had a dream that I found a clapped out Superbird shell in poor condition for a decent price. I then, in this dream, built the car using my 70 Satellite and all of the stuff that we've collected for the clone. Then I woke up.  :'(
Anyone else ever have a dream like this?

The body is super solid and super straight, not a wrinkle in it. Almost no bondo and VERY little cancer to address. The trunk is solid with some scaling. Only need to patch the drivers side footwell.

The car is sitting on body wheels from US Car Tool....Im real happy with them. the pic shows the car with just the rears installed.

Not much of a picture taker though......Some of the documented threads on this site are incredible.Ive already kicked myself for not taking enough pictures during the dis-assembly.

I needed to edit...............I mis typed rears for fronts. :icon_smile_blackeye:

NASCARXX29 Dave asked about my progress so I decided to keep it all together rather than hijacking that thread.

I had a friend (Matt M.)restore the inside of the nosecone. Im very happy with the results. Now if the guy holding my body hostage would kick it up a notch I could get the nose out of my way and into his shop.

before pics inside of the nose.

UPDATE:

I finally had enough of the bodyman's BS and pulled the car out of his shop. I fabricated a story about selling the car so I could get the car without too much drama. after 15 months of having the car under his care the J.O. performed about 6 hours worth of work......I connected with another local shop which specializes in restoration not just dabbles in it. The new shop does nothing else but restos and has laid out a plan in which I will see monthy progress....WHOOT!!!!!
they will be documenting the progress digitally and told me to stop in anytime and check on the progress or just to BS. I hooked up with this crew through a good friend while at the Carlisle weekend and feel very good other than wondering what if I went here first?

pulling out of the hell that was my supposed slvation.

I don't think there's enough space on the net for such a list.

I know your pain. My Charger sat in a guys place for 6 months with NO work done, and I gave him HALF the money up front to buy supplies. 3 months and a court room visit after I went and took my car back, I got about a third of that money back. What puzzled me is the fact the guy(literally half my size) was talking smack to me about getting MY car back! WTH?! I never threatened him with physical harm or said a cross word to him.  :shruggy:

Sorry for the hijack. I'm glad you've found someone to finish your car.

I dont have pics because the camera was dead but I was at the shop to see the Bird. I dropped off some parts and talked with the guys for a while.
Its nice seeing progress, way more in a few short months than the previous 15ish.
they are in the middle of doing the "HOKEY-POKEY" with the nose ( you guys know-how many times is it going to be on and off) and have the dash and windshield out for me.

I dropped in at the shop yesterday to see if theres been any progress.

I guess I was hoping for more but thrilled to see some.  :yesnod: since I last posted we found that the flash that occured during the long holding pattern would be better addressed with media rather that a DA. A contributing factor was that I spray bombed undercoating on because the blaster was unable to get all the original off and down to all metal.( I was hiding the poor job but was in a hurry to move things along. :slap: So we are going to blast the entire car again this time with media in place of the soda that was initially used.
The top will be coming off now too. the RR in the pic is getting a lot of metal work done to it. :eek2:

I was at the body shop this week but the camera was dead so no more pics to confuse you guys! The updated pics would have really got you guys since my Bird and the 70 Runner look very similiar now.

anyway I do have a little piece of candy for you guys to look at. I have painted the wheels and Im very happy with how they turned out. I posted this elsewhere too so forgive me if you seen them there too.

The last pic is the way the overspray was on the factory paint, I couldnt really achieve that with any level of comfort because I didnt want to run the paint on the face.

'69 used the red plug, although originals were more of a maroon or brick-red color rather than the brighter red available now - plus there is some lettering visible on the originals that is missing from the repop's.

'70 B-body usually had the green plug just like yours, so that's the one to re-use for certain.  The plugs get painted in place with the axle assembly, so a lot of times you can't tell what color they are until disassembly anyway.

Ive got an update with a few pics!!!! YAY!

I went to check out a few concerns of the shop guys and to give my approval or not of the reassembly to see if we're ready for blocking and final prime. We going to spend some time working on the nose to fender alignment. I know they didnt have nice panel alignment from the start but Im not going to live with the "why didnt I" question in my head.

Title: Re: There goes my baby!
Post by: JB400 on November 22, 2012, 02:24:35 AM
The black is that e coating.  It's the same thing as what is on reproduction body panels.  That would be my guess.
Title: Re: There goes my baby!
Post by: FJ5WING on November 22, 2012, 07:07:30 AM
The black is just some black that was handy at the time when they were working on some minor nose issues.

I'm very happy to say, I am offended that Moparmann thought the quarters were replaced! :nana: The quarters are factory original to this car with a LITTLE patch work to the wheel arch and the lowers behind the wheel arches. The wheel houses and trunk extensions are factory original. There was very little metal work needed on my car, just the forementioned and a portion of the drivers side floor pan under the pedals. I did have a LOT of metal pitting to the underside because of the prior owners attempt to protect the car and use spray bomb undercoating that was literally killing the car because it trapped moisture between the undercoating and floor pan. If not for that I would have just fixed the motor and had it on the road many-many years ago.

Ive got some paint updates since the shop FINALLY finished up the Road Runner and are able to focus on my car.

I spent a long time on color selection! not the color choice but the shade of color I was happy with. Thanks to Doug and Ron for more help than I could have imagined!

The main body is expected to be shot late next week and I'll definetly have pics to show off but for now just some teasers. Im not sure what else is painted because these were mailed to me. I'll be at the shop on Monday and on paint day next week.

Thanks guys!
Its PPG BC/CC and isn't exactly off the shelf, Thanks to Doug and Ron (Big Bird) I was able to get a color Im happy with. It was a 2 month ordeal Im not looking forward to ever repeating.

I took some pics but the car is still in the booth and the pics aren't much different than the one posted. Ill post them up tomorrow...Off to bed! (3RD Shifter)

Dave and his painter put a LOT of work and shot several different test panels to get a color adjustment that would be representative of what the factory paint looked like.  A lot of times when you see Limelight on cars, it really looks oversaturated.   Almost too vibrant.

PPG was my hunch too looking at the pics. Their colors are so much more vibrant, they have that "pop".
Looks really good!

The overspray looks a little heavier in the picture than it does in person. Im happy with it but we did go back and adjust the amount and location on the front frame rails.

Just a little note, not nitpicking.  I love the car and color, doing an excellent job.  I can't see the speedo cable clip on your car.  Maybe 70 Birds didn't have it or maybe it just doesn't show up in the pic :shruggy:

I have no idea if the clip is there or not? I took it apart almost 5 years ago. Are you saying it should've been there during the underside of the car being finished? If it should've been in place Ill have to dig it up and see what I can do about getting it installed and then blending it in. I had to do that with the driver side exhaust hanger bracket. :icon_smile_blackeye:

Im sure its not going to be the last forgotten item/part/process during the coming months. :P

Somebody the has the detailed knowledge of birds should confirm your car needs one.  68 and 69 chargers have them and the front floor section from AMD B-body cars come with them.  The go on with either with a tiny spot weld (probaboly easy to break and fall off) or a little screw.  I think it's there to keep the cable off of the exhaust.

Pic of the part attached.

Thanks for the pic of the speedo clip!

the shop sent me a pic of the first part installed on their end. Im having them do some of the reassembly but not too much since that's the pay-off for me for waiting so long.
everything is painted/cut + polished except the nose and wing. Once the doors-fenders-hood-deck lid are installed Im having them install everything on the inner side of the firewall then its just the vinyl top and glass for them.

Today Im dis-assembling the dash assembly because I didn't make certain there was good clean metal contact for the gauge cluster so thered be no ground issues. :P

yesterday was a GREAT day getting to see my car starting to look like a car again.

Troy, Im going with the same paint just getting done in stages as the booth isn't large enough to do everything. the painter is a good one and I fully trust him!  Yep, that's my nose in the foreground.

They'll also be installing the headliner and vinyl top including all the glass and stainless. I don't want any part of playing around with that rear window trim. the installer is more anal than me which I always thought was tough to beat until I found DodgeCharger.com!

just got an update from the boys at the shop. They had an issue with the vinyl top and had to rip it off and order another and will be using a different adhesive to install it sometime this week. The nose got Greened yesterday so I have a pic of that along with the roof prior to the first attempt. I also included a shot from my Pops send off from his recent passing. My mom wanted to use the Coronet along with my brothers 70 Corvette and Pops 87 Monte SS to lead him to his final resting place.

It's a "J" clip that's slid over the holes in the lower lip/holes on the C frames, 2 per side on the C frames that support the Z bars,....IIRC it's 1/4-20 thread, the threaded portion of the "J" clip faces upward on the lower rail of the C frame, so that you can bolt the pan corner and lower valance together from the bottom.

Looks like they are getting ready to paint the black out around the headlight door openings?....remember soft paint edges are needed (backtaping process) otherwise, if the edges are hard tape lines, they will show thru the decal when installed later,...then you'll either hate looking at that part of the car and live with it, or hate the fact that it's another one of those "do overs"

I just wanted to get this updated a little since it looks like the Bird is coming home next weekend.

Does anyone have any experience with the repop headlight vacuum cans? I was cleaning mine up today and found the source of the loss of vacuum. The non diaphragm end has several pin holes. Im on the look out for a good used piece if anyone knows.

Id get the originals rebuilt. The repops are the 68 style with the magnets inside. You need 69 style for a Daytona or a bird.

I've used the repro units on a few customers projects, very nice repros, spendy though!!!!originals are not that hard to find, they often are shot though, your choice repro, or original/repaired, which are often just injected with a flexible rubber agent until the diaphram stops leaking, this can result in a canister requiring more vacuum to operate,..as the diaphram is now thicker and more resistant to moving

Regarding the magnets, both the 68 and 69 canisters have them, just that the 68's are much larger, the 68 canister in wingcar use, may actually be of a benefit, as the magnet holds the door in the closed position, esp if your using the factory safety springs on the pivot shafts, the system will still bleed off vacuum (usually the dash switch) and then your Bird will exhibit the lazy eye look after sitting for some time after running, the larger magnets will hold them closed, only draw back to the larger mags is if you have low vacuum due to camshaft/engine build, then you'll have to run up the engine to produce some stored vacuum to pop the lights up,...I've got 68 canisters on my Daytona, 10" vac at idle and the lights come up fine, but I don't run the safety springs either.....

Disregard anything D. Patik has posted on the 68 canisters and not using them because of some swing arc radius nonsense, the 68 canisters are identical in all shape/function to the 69's with the exception of the casting numbers, and the magnet base size

If you do purchase the repro canisters, buy directly from Mike Ross at BEAParts.com as the intial run (some of which may still be out there with other vendors, Ebay, etc, leak) Mike had a new run made to solve any issues, and he assures you he has tested each and every one before they leave his shop

I picked up my Greenie on Friday and quickly discovered its VERY stressful to load a fresh car on a trailer with squirrely casters under the body. :silly:

FIRST, we found the car was too tall to fit in the box on the inflated body wheels. I had to deflate the tires most of the way to get her in. :P On the off load it was WAY more stressful with a less than level driveway. Everything went well and shes all tucked away and Ive spent hours plotting my course and transporting parts from home to the garage i'll use for re-assembly.

:brickwall: YEP! Not because it needed four years worth of work either! the first place kept it hostage for 15 months and my total bill was less than $400.00.
The final shop was balls deep in a turn key restoration when I was snuck into the shop. Its a small shop with two guys who take care of the cars like their own.

Ive got a mini update for anyone wanting to follow along. Sorry its not up to par with the heavy hitter resto threads but these pockets are short and the home shop is small. :nana:

Ive got the front spring hangers in place but heres the rest of the rear components getting ready to go in. I'll try to get some hands to help with the Dana next weekend but I'll have the springs in before than waiting.
I also got all four side markers in with all the lenses being NOS.

I got all four corners undercoated and Im pretty happy with the results. Ive seen some recent restos where the coating was very thin maybe too thin? I had to take a lot of liberties with the application because I had no reference with my car thanks to the previous owners brilliant idea to spray his own version on.

So, what'd you use for undercoating and how did you apply it??  Just the wheel wells?

I did just the wheel wells.

I used Resto Ricks and should have applied twice as much to a better thickness/appearance.

Im not going OE Gold level but Im trying the best I can to get a "GOOD" restoration.

I got my bumper back from two trips to the chromer.  :flame: :brickwall:
Sure looks pretty sitting next to boxes of NOS parts ready to be bolted up. I didn't locate an NOS license plate bracket but had mine restored by Jules  :engel016: and it looks pretty frickin good. Picked up both reverse light "Master Packs" as well as a license lamp assembly and of course the license plate hardware kit.  :woohoo:
I got a "semi" just looking at it. :drool5:

Funny it took two trips to the chromer on my back bumper also!
Nice collection of NOS for the bumper! Not many more sets of those parts to be assembled
on one car. We couldn't find an NOS license plate bracket either.
I had a pile of used ones and we found just one with real strong original galvanizing!
I bought an NOS spring and nylon fastners and had Troy restore the mounting bracket.
It all ads up to a very nice assembly. WELL DONE!
MJ

Ive got most of the interior in...pics to follow but some of you may remember I was searching for a antenna.
I was able to locate a super nice NOS take off antenna and had it shipped to me. Unfortunately this is what I found in the mail box.

Whenever I ship stuff like that, I use PVC or water pipe.  Those cardboard tubes are for calendars.   ;)

The water pipe I used to ship a Challenger SE rear finish panel cost a little more but for peace of mind was worth it.  When you're shipping priceless items "an ounce of prevention is worth....yada, yada...gold"

I got distracted with buying a new truck to one day begin hauling to distant events but managed to get the interior buttoned up other than the buckets and steering column which are on hold until I can get the brake booster back and reinstalled.

Hi gang

I put some hours in on the Greenie lately after a long time away mostly due to the hobby fund being empty. Still havent fully recovered but enough that I can play around.

After doing the Hokey-Pokey with the bumper I finally got it back and one and Im very happy. I did have an attrition during the bumper dance where I lost on of the NOS reverse lenses. I found a great NOS replacement for the NOS part.

Im sorry Im not the picture documenter that Troy and MoarJohn are so Ive missed a lot. I got the front suspension buttoned up and the Greenie sitting on on fours again. Its been such  a long time that I forgot it was close to ten years since it was like this.
I forgot to mention a couple of facebook friends reminded me to update this thread. Thanks!!!! :icon_smile_wink:

Yeah but your idea of "trying the best I can to get a "GOOD" restoration" is most likely R. Gibson, K. Alexander level.  Don't ever think the quality of your work is sub par, be proud man!

She's an absolute beauty.

But I'm super partial to '68 Coronets & that other ride of yours has to be the nicest one I've ever had the opportunity of not seeing in person.   :brickwall:

Thanks everyone! I really appreciate the support and especially the encouraging words from 472 R/T SE. I know Im biased but its turning out very nice. I have had to settle for some reproduction parts during the process. I dont have the funding or the time it takes to get my hands on correct parts that seldom surface these days. Ive probably spent too much restoring many parts to try and stay away from the repops. Im sure most of us understand my reasoning.

An update about the antenna, I was able to root out another one but had a lot of shelf wear(not to be confused with weather wear). Guess what! the polisher lost it.....YEP!

Have a GREAT day boys!
